WELCOME TO DEADLINE SOUND & SCREEN

Deadline’s Composer Showcase of Original Music for Some of Television’s Most Acclaimed Shows

We’re back with another tuneful iteration of Deadline’s Sound & Screen event. This showcase is one of our most soulful jams that we put together, where audiences get to hear a fantastic orchestra beautifully play the music from their favorite television shows of the year.

Sound & Screen grows every year and puts a smile on attendees’ faces in a way that no other awards season event does. Tonight will be no different and we hope there’s as much sonic charm as always.

We’re confident that there will be, given the music from the 11 shows featured. From epic dramas, comic book capers, video game adaptations, classic remakes and some of the most original titles of the year, we promise that the music from this season’s crop of projects will bring you closer to these stories than ever before.

Tonight, you’ll hear from an assortment of composers and song writers, kicking off with Bear McCreary heading to Middle Earth’s Second Age with the score from Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The Amazon-owned streamer is also bringing us the superhero sounds of The Boys with composers Christopher Lennertz and Matt Bowen.

Sound & Screen grows every year and puts a smile on attendees’ faces in a way no other awards season event does.

Volker Bertelmann, recent Oscar winner for his work on Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front, will discuss his latest small-screen project, The Day of the Jackal, the acclaimed Peacock series fronted by Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch.

There’s also Siddhartha Khosla, the founder of indie rock band Goldspot, who won the Emmy last year for his work on Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building. He’ll be hoping to replicate that with his work on a different Hulu show, the dystopian drama Paradise starring Sterling K. Brown.

Speaking of dystopian, we also have music from Apple’s Severance, HBO’s The Last of Us and Netflix’s Squid Game

Theodore Shapiro, fresh from appearing at Deadline’s Contenders TV event last month, will discuss working with Ben Stiller, with music from the Adam Scott-fronted workplace series Severance.

Gustavo Santaolalla and David Fleming—the latter appeared last year with Mr. & Mrs. Smith— will be bringing music from The Last of Us, while Jung Jaeil will

be exposing us to the haunting sounds from inside the island of Squid Game

Apple is also bringing us some therapy in the form of Shrinking Tom Howe, who has worked on projects as diverse as The Great British Bake Off and Ted Lasso, will be here to share sounds of the Jason Segel-fronted dramedy series.

Mick Giacchino has worked his magical sounds into some major IP series from The Muppets Mayhem to Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. Tonight, he is sharing sounds from HBO’s The Penguin. Dimitri Smith and James Poyser will be performing the dark sounds of Peacock’s Sony Pictures Television-produced Philadelphia-set cop drama miniseries Long Bright River, which stars Amanda Seyfried.

Finally, one of two video game adaptations that will be platformed tonight is Netflix’s Arcane, with composer and executive music producer Alex Seaver sharing the sounds of the steampunk action series that is set in the world of Riot Games’ League of Legends. We hope you enjoy the music.

PANELISTS Your

Volker Bertelmann

The Day of the Jackal

Volker Bertelmann is an internationally acclaimed pianist, composer and experimental musician. In 2023, he won a BAFTA and Oscar in the Best Original Score category for All Quiet on the Western Front. His score for Lion, which he composed in collaboration with Dustin O’Halloran, was nominated for multiple awards, including an Oscar for Best Original Score, Golden Globe for Best Original Score, and Best Film Music at the BAFTAs. He has provided music for several films and television series, including the score for Patrick Melrose, The Old Guard, Stowaway, the episode “Red Book” from Black Mirror, and

the 2020 film Ammonite, cocomposed with O’Halloran. In 2022, he scored War Sailor, an official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival, and returned to TIFF in 2023 with One Life

Bertelmann’s latest projects include Conclave, for which he collaborated again with director Edward Berger, and which garnered critical acclaim at Telluride and TIFF. The film also secured Bertelmann an Academy Award nomination for the Best Music (Original Score), a Golden Globe nomination in the Best Original Score–Motion Picture, a Critics Choice Awards nomination for Best Score and a BAFTA nomination for Original Score. In addition, he scored the prequel series Dune: Prophecy

Volker Bertelmann

(HBO Max), the Peacock series

The Day of the Jackal, and the documentary Hollywoodgate. His most recent score can be heard on the The Amateur (20th Century Studios).

Bertelmann is an active member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,

and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Matt Bowen

The Boys

Matt Bowen fuses his background as a classicallytrained violinist with his decades-long experience

recording rock bands to write and produce rich, eclectic, and handmade scores for film and television.

As an LA-based composer, Bowen most recently coscored Season 4 of Amazon’s dark superhero franchise The Boys, as well as its spinoff Gen V, with composer Christopher Lennertz. Contrasting the twisted world of the Vought Cinematic Universe are Bowen’s eccentric, energetic and earnest scores for Hulu’s R-rated feature film comedies The Binge, its sequeI It’s a Wonderful Binge, and the upcoming Summer of 69

Some of Bowen’s other credits include the Emmy Award-winning documentary Blood Road, the Netflix TV series Best. Worst. Weekend. Ever., and episodes of the animated anthology series

The Boys Present: Diabolical Bowen grew up with a bow in hand, having played the violin since age 3, so his scores are often adorned with bowing instruments not intended to be bowed, creating unique and provocative textures. His violin work led to joining his hometown San Diego Youth Symphony, which toured the world, and gave him his first sense of music collaboration on a larger scale.

Bowen’s high school and

college years brought experimentation within a variety of bands outside of the classical setting, from electronica, to punk, to acoustic rock. After recording multiple albums with these bands, he discovered his true love of working behind-thescenes in a studio setting and moved on to work directly with recording artists, linking up with record producer Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Faith No More), and engineering RIAA-certified platinum singles by Michael Franti & Spearhead (“Say Hey”) and O.A.R. (“Shattered”).

David Fleming

The Last of Us

Composer David Fleming is an American composer who has written music for film and television, including most recently, Amazon’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Ron Howard’s Jim Henson: Idea Man, both of which resulted in Primetime Emmy nominations for Fleming, and a win for his Jim Henson score.

Christopher Lennertz The Boys

While Star Wars, Van Halen, and Bye Bye Birdie may be responsible for his love of movies, music and theater, it was a chance meeting with Henry Mancini in college that changed Christopher Lennertz’s life forever.

In awe of Mancini’s ability to compose for any genre, Lennertz has modeled his career to be just as diverse. He has written music for some of the world’s greatest storytellers, from biting action and satire for Amazon’s hit The Boys, to the lush orchestral melodies of Steven Spielberg’s Medal of Honor series, a stark, gospel piano for Mark Ruffalo’s battle with addiction in Thanks for Sharing, and soaring heroics for Seth Rogen as a hot dog saving the world in Sausage Party. This classic eclectic ability has

now become his signature.
