As always, our Contenders events bring you the lowdown on hot picks for awards, with a wealth of talent and teasers for what you need to watch. And this time we are bringing you two full days of must-see shows, each overflowing with enormous talent. With the incredible amount of prestige TV on offer, now is the time to get your list of favorites up and running—and we’re here to help you do that. With Angelenos still reeling from the devastating fires and with industry-wide upheaval and much change on the horizon, it’s heartening to see the continuing incredible quality and breadth of these shows—from returning favorites like Severance, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Last of Us, 1923, Yellowjackets and The Boys, to all the brand new and exciting TV we’ll be showcasing for you this weekend. ● Pete, widely considered to be one of the pre-eminent awards analysts for both film and television, has for the past 14 years been Deadline’s Awards Columnist covering the yearround Oscar and Emmy seasons. He is also Deadline’s Chief Film Critic, having previously reviewed films for MovieLine, Boxoffice magazine, Backstage, Hollywood.com and Maxim, as well as Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide for which he was a contributing editor. In addition to writing, Pete is also host of the PBS SoCal Cinema Series and the weekly PBS television series “Must See Movies”. He previously held producing positions at “Entertainment Tonight”, “Extra”, “Access Hollywood”, “The Arsenio Hall Show”, “The Martin Short Show” and AMC Networks and is the recipient of five Emmy nominations for writing. Pete is only the second journalist to have received the Publicists Guild of America’s Press Award twice, in 1996 and 2013.

High Potential, created by Drew Goddard and based on the French series HPI, is a farcical procedural starring Kaitlin Olson. In the show, Olson plays Morgan, a single mother with an IQ of 160 who works as a cleaning lady at the Los Angeles Police Department before she becomes a consultant for the LAPD’s Major Crimes division. The cast also includes Daniel Sunjata, Javicia Leslie, Deniz Akdeniz, Amirah J, Matthew Lamb and Judy Reyes.

● Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire

This modern adaptation of Anne Rice’s gothic novel follows

Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson), Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) and Claudia (Delainey Hayles)’s story of love and immortality, as told to journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian). In Season 3, Lestat decides to start a band and go on tour. The series also stars Assad Zaman and Ben Daniels.

● Dope

Thief

Dope Thief, based on Dennis Tafoya’s book of the same name, follows two long-time friends Ray (Brian Tyree Henry) and Manny (Wagner Moura) who pose as DEA agents to steal drugs from prominent dealers. Their righteous scores soon turn dangerous when the pair ends up robbing the wrong house, the headquarters of one of the biggest and most secretive narcotics operations on the East Coast. Other cast members include Marin Ireland, Kate Mulgrew, Amir Arison and Ving Rhames.

● Severance

Stiller, this sci-fi psychological thriller follows employees at Lumon Industries, a sinister biotech corporation. Mark (Adam Scott) is an employee that went through a controversial ‘severance’ procedure separating his work and non-work memories. But then he begins to unravel conspiracies around Lumon.

● The Studio

In The Studio, Seth Rogen stars as Matt Remick, the newly appointed head of embattled Continental Studios. As movies struggle to stay alive and relevant, Matt and his core team of infighting executives battle their own insecurities as they wrangle narcissistic artists and craven corporate overlords in the ever-elusive pursuit of making great films. In addition to Rogen, Catherine O’Hara, Kathryn Hahn, Ike Barinholtz and Chase Sui Wonders also star, with Bryan Cranston guest starring.

● Matlock

The reboot of the revered series stars Kathy Bates as Madeline ‘Matty’ Matlock, a smart older woman who has achieved success in her

younger years, and decides to rejoin the workforce at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and cunning tactics to win cases, while investigating a deeply personal secret of her own. Matlock also stars Skye P. Marshall, Jason Ritter, Leah Lewis and David Del Rio.

● Out of My Mind

Based on the novel of the same name by Sharon M. Draper, the book follows preteen Melody Brooks (Phoebe-Rae Taylor), a girl with cerebral palsy. Melody has a sharp mind, but due to her being non-verbal and using a wheelchair, she is not given the same academic opportunities as her classmates. However, when an educator notices Melody’s untapped potential, she encourages her to participate in mainstream education, of which she has much to experience. Jennifer Aniston, Rosemarie DeWitt, Luke Kirby and Judith Light also star.

● Going Dutch

Denis Leary returns to comedy as Army Col. Patrick Quinn who, after an offensive rant,

is punished by being sent to a base in the Netherlands. Garrison Stroopsdorf is the “least important Army base in the world”. It has no strategic purpose or weapons, but instead boasts luxury resort-type amenities such as a Michelin Star-level commissary and the Army’s only fromagerie. Quinn tries to restore discipline and professionalism, but has to work with the base’s former leader, his estranged daughter Maggie (Taylor Misiak).

● The Last of Us

The second season of the postapocalyptic drama, set five years after the end of Season 1, sees Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) at odds as they settle into the fortified city of Jackson, Wyoming. Gabriel Luna and Rutina Wesley return for Season 2. Also joining the cast this time is Kaitlyn Dever, a soldier on a mission of vengeance for a loved one, but subsequently, her view of the world is changed. ● Good American Family

This drama series is inspired by the true story of Natalia Grace, a little girl with dwarfism, and the Midwestern couple who adopted her. Gradually they begin to suspect she may not be who she says she is. The Katie Robbins-created series focuses on multiple points of view as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias and trauma. As the couple (played by Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass) raise their adopted child (Imogen Faith Reid) alongside their three biological children, they start to worry she may be a threat when mystery emerges around her age and background. Dulé Hill, Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue and Jenny O’Hara also star.

● The Handmaid’s Tale

This acclaimed, dystopian drama adapts Margaret Atwood’s portentous 1985 novel of the same name. Created by Bruce Miller, it centers on Elisabeth Moss’s June, a woman living in a dark

age who sees her family and her former life stripped away. She strikes back and becomes a fierce leader of a rebellion, but her quest for justice endangers herself and those around her. The Season 6 cast also includes Sam Jaeger, Ever Carradine and Josh Charles.

● Mid-Century Modern

Mid-Century Modern is a multi-camera comedy from Will & Grace creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick along with Ryan Murphy. The series follows three best friends (played by Matt Bomer, Nathan Lee Graham and Nathan Lane) who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs, where the wealthiest of them lives with his mother (Linda Lavin). As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, at least they have each other. Guest stars include Pamela Adlon, Vanessa Bayer, Billie Lourd, Richard Kind and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

● Paradise

This Hulu Original political drama series, created by Dan Fogelman, stars Sterling K. Brown as Secret Service

Agent Xavier Collins. Set in a peaceful utopian community only inhabited by the world’s most prominent individuals, Xavier and the citizens of this ‘new world’ are suddenly put into a crisis when someone mysteriously assassinates the President (James Marsden). The series also stars Julianne Nicholson, Sarah Shahi, Nicole Brydon Bloom, Aliyah Mastin and Percy Daggs IV.

In Deli Boys, when their convenience store magnate father suddenly dies, a pair of pampered Pakistani American brothers (Asif Ali and Saagar Shaikh) lose everything and are forced to reckon with their father’s secret life of crime as they attempt to take over the family business. The brothers have to juggle managing the illegal drug enterprise and the public-facing company, DarCo, while they conceal their activities from their loved ones. ● Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light Set in 1535, the six-part series follows Tudor era chancellor Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance), in the wake of the execution of King Henry VIII’s second wife, Anne Boleyn (Claire Foy), as he climbs to power and wealth, while his King settles into short-lived happiness with his third queen, Jane Seymour (Kate Phillips). Torn between his desire to do right and the desire to survive, he knows no one is safe in the wake of Boleyn’s death. With England in disarray between religious and social reforms, Cromwell’s enemies are secretly waiting in the shadows to unseat him. Damian Lewis, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Harriet Walter, Timothy Spall and Harry Melling also star.

With harsh winter conditions and adversaries threatening the Dutton’s Yellowstone ranch, Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara (Helen Mirren)’s son Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) embarks on a perilous journey back from Africa with his new bride Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) as

he races against time to save his family. In Season 2 of the prequel to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, the family faces a new set of challenges in the early 20th Century, including the rise of Western expansion, Prohibition and the Great Depression. The show also stars Aminah Nieves, Timothy Dalton, Isabel May and Darren Mann.

A remake of the French series Le Bureau des Légendes, The Agency follows Brandon ‘Martian’ Colby (Michael Fassbender), a covert CIA agent ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to the London bureau. When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites. His career, his real identity and his mission are left in the balance, when he’s caught up in a dangerous world of espionage. The show also stars Richard Gere, Jeffrey Wright, George Clooney and Grant Heslov.

● Landman

Set in the oil-fueled boomtowns of West Texas, Landman centers around Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton), a petroleum landman and operations VP

at an oil company. Based on an 11-part podcast called Boomtown the series focuses on the many moving parts, from ordinary roughnecks to wildcat billionaires, that feed an oil empire as it reshapes our climate, economy and geopolitics. The series also stars Ali Larter, Michelle Randolph, Jon Hamm and Demi Moore.

● Yellowjackets

This Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson-created drama follows four women who survived a 1996 plane crash while in their teens. The series switches between the crash era and 25 years later, as they try to move past the things they were forced to do to survive. The series stars Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Tawny Cypress, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Sophie Thatcher.

● Another Simple Favor

A sequel to A Simple Favor (2018), Another Simple Favor follows Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) and Emily Nelson

(Blake Lively) as they travel to the beautiful island of Capri for Emily’s extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman (Michele Morrone). Packed with glamorous guests, the epic festivities are rocked by murder and betrayal. The film is directed by Paul Feig and written by Jessica Sharzer and Laeta Kalogridis, with a returning cast including Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin and Joshua Satine, who are also joined by Elizabeth Perkins and Allison Janney.

● The Better Sister

The Better Sister focuses on the complicated things that drive sisters apart and bring them back together. Jessica Biel stars as Chloe, a woman who moves through the world with her successful lawyer husband Adam (Corey Stoll) and teenage son Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan) by her side. Meanwhile, her estranged sister Nicky (Elizabeth Banks) struggles to stay clean and hustles to make ends meet. When Adam is shockingly murdered, the alleged suspect sends shockwaves through the family, unveiling long-kept secrets.

● The Boys

Based on The New York Times best-selling comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys follows a group of vigilantes who aim to keep corrupt superheroes in check. In Season 4, the world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the thumb of Homelander (Antony Starr), who is consolidating his power. The dying Butcher (Karl Urban) is still reeling from losing his job as The Boys’ leader and the trust of his fellow teammates. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.
