SHE COUNTS

SHE COUNTS is an installation on the topic of femicides in Italy. The project shows the number of victims of femicide over the past fifteen years through a physical bar chart made of rope and wrapped around the Panchina Rossa in Bolzano’s Piazza Municipio.

2 Poems Of Transition Poem n. 04

The idea of dedicating an installation to this theme came from a research on the number of victims. Observing the data available on femicides in Italy over the past years, makes clear that the phenomen is not properly covered. SHE COUNTS aims to make people aware in the most immediate and visually impactful way of the high number of victims who are registered in Italy every year.

The choice of the location is complementary to the installation itself, since the “Panchina Rossa” in Bolzano’s Piazza Municipio was installed in 2008 as a symbol against violence towards women and femicides. SHE COUNTS makes more explicit the message already embodied in the bench. The infographic wrapped around the metal structure of the bench, shows the annual number of victims of feminicide in Italy from 2007 to 2022.

The graphic is accompanied by the inscription “VOGLIAMO CONTARCI DA VIVE” (“We want to count ourselves alive”) to address passers-by to the main theme of femicides.

We wrapped the 4 mm thick nylon thread around the bars of the bench to create uniform beams.

Each beam constituted one bar of the graph and reached the desired lenght to represent the number of victims.

4 Poems Of Transition Poem n. 04

On each bar of the graph we have applied a label indicating the year and the corresponding number of victims.

We included an inscription and a label to make the theme of the installation more understandable.

POEMS OF TRANSITION is a special project of the visual communication workshop “Exhibition Graphic Design: processes of cultural practice” at the Facul of Design and Art of Bozen-Bolzano. POEMS OF TRANSITION has been developed in parallel with the exhibition L’Offesa at ar/ge kunst, curated by Fran cesca Verga and Zasha Colah, and to the exhibition Poesie e no at Museion, curated by Frida Carazzato. On the occasion of the two exhibitions, seven communication projects were developed during the workshop to interpret themes present in the work of Lucia Marcucci and the ’70s Group through a contemporary perspective. Seven groups of stu dents each elaborated a POEM that expresses their most urgent reflections. The POEMS have been translated into site-specific installations in Bolzano and documented through seven booklets together with the website poemsoftransition.eu
