WE ARE DCUSU

Where to find us?

Welcome to DCU

DCU Students’ Union is here to ensure you make the most of your time here in DCU. We are run by the students FOR the students. Every single one of you is a member of the union. We aim to make sure you have the best experience during your time at DCU. Make sure to get involved in everything we have to offer from events to clubs and societies. You won’t regret it. We have a team of five full-time officers, elected by students for 2017/2018. We raise student concerns and represent you on a local and national level. They are also available to you for various needs you may have. The president Niall and the four Vice Presidents Siobhán, Matt, Brendan and Podge have their doors always open. You should never feel alone in DCU and always reach when you need help. We also have a team of Part Time officers who are there to represent different faculties, clubs & societies, An Ghaeilge and Postgraduate students. DCU SU is located on the Glasnevin & St. Patrick’s campuses, and you can find our locations ---> We are currently undergoing MASSIVE changes to enhance your student experience, and in Semester 2 you will the the FIRST year to witness the opening of the state of the art DCU Students’ Centre. Due to these renovations, it can be tough to find us on the Glasnevin campus. We are located above the NuBar via the fire exit on the Gym side of the bar - Come up and say Hello !

Looking forward to working for you!

- Niall, Podge, Siobhán, Matt & Brendan

St. Patrick’s Campus: The SU space on St Patrick’s campus is located off D block. If you’re leaving Java Café we are directly across from you the other side of the quad (green area).

REPRESENTATION There are 9 Part Time Officers in DCU listed below each elected by students. Each faculty is represented by elected CONVENORS. They work closely with their faculty class reps and the SU ensuring the voices of the students in their faculty are heard. Anyone can run for these positions, so get in touch if you would like to run for election and represent students next year.

Each class is represented by elected CLASS REPS. You can run for class rep and it’s a great experience to engage and shape DCU. Class Reps attend Class Rep Council and Programme Board meetings and feedback their findings to all students.

BUSINESS FACULTY BRYAN MULRY

Anyone can run for these positions, so get in touch if you would like to run for election and represent students next year.

EDUCATION FACULTY REP OLIVIA FORDE

ENGINEERING &COMPUTING EMILIO DORAN

SOCIETIES OFFICER EMILY HARDY

HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES CRAIG MCHUGH

Class Reps questions could range from academic to personal issues. Leading from these, Class Reps may need to contact lecturers or refer students to support services that you’ll find in this guide. Class Reps should ask their class if they have any issues that need to be brought to the Union and may remind students of upcoming submission deadlines. As well as academic support, there’s also the social side of things. Some classes may want to order class hoodies which reps may organise.

SCIENCE & HEALTH CALLAGHAN COMMONS

CLUBS OFFICER THOMAS DORIAN

OIFIGEACH NA GAEILGE CAOIMHE NI CHONGAILE

POST GRAD OFFICER ALLAN STEVENSON

Organising social events or nights out might be something class reps usually want to do too. If you need tips for nights out, ask us! Class reps are sometimes asked to speak to lecturers regarding various module issues such as timetables, assignment deadlines and distribution of lecture notes. Reporting back from Class Rep Council is always welcome so that the classes are aware of what is being discussed and voted upon. As well of these class reps always have their own ideas of what a class rep should do which is always welcome! If this sounds like you, make sure you run for Class Rep! Our engagement and Development Officer Siobhán will be in touch with students with details on how to run!

GET INVOLVED: Talk to your housemates, talk to your classmates, join a club or soc. There are SO many opportunities in DCU so take advantage of them. If you are shy, don’t worry, this is your chance to start fresh. Even within the SU you can get involved as a Class rep, in the Media crew or in the Ents crew to gain great experience and meet new people GO TO ORIENTATION: You’ll be surprised just how beneficial all of the talks and activities are. The next week is crucial as it won’t be until time goes by you’ll find out how important the information is, as well as meeting new friends for your time in DCU. GO TO YOUR LECTURES: Honestly, you will thank us later. When week 7 comes a long and you don’t understand what’s going on it’ll come in handy, or when you don’t have to cut your summer short for repeats. Just do it ! APPROACH YOUR LECTURERS: They aren’t as scary as you look. They are there to help you during your time in DCU, and are always available via email or after class for a quick chat. If that isn’t an option contact your class rep or faculty rep for clarification and representation. MIND THE ALCOHOL: All students don’t drink, there are lots of things to do in the wonderful city of Dublin. If you do take the odd beverage, you don’t always have to go out. The first few weeks of college can be extremely hectic so take it easy and remember to enjoy it! BUDGET: It can be a shock to the system starting college, especially if you’re away from home for the first time. The last thing you want is to be struggling to put a dinner on the table so budget and stick to it. If you need help with budgeting you can contact the SU. JOBS: A lot of students work alongside their studies. We recommend not working more than 15 hours a week and prioritise college over your part-time work. If you burn out your grades will suffer and will leave you with no spare time. WHEN TIMES GET TOUGH: You are never alone, there’s always someone to talk to in DCU whether they are your friends, your classmates or us here in the SU - Podge (vppodge@ dcusu.ie) or Student Support & Development. The Student advice centre located in the Henry Grattan Building in Glasnevin, and opposite the Auditorium on the St. Pats campus are always there if you need them.

We have the very exciting ‘Bleeper Bike’ scheme. Similar to the Dublin Bike scheme you can pick up a bike and drop it off again only you don’t have to leave it at a particular station. The bikes are instead tracked by GPS and you just need the ‘Bleeper Bike’ app on your phone. Perfect for getting from campus to campus.

Three Campuses

We have three campuses here in DCU. Glasnevin, St. Patrick’s and All Hallows’. Glasnevin hosts the faculties of Business, Engineering and Computing, Science and Health and some of Humanities and Social Science. The St. Patrick’s Campus is the DCU Institute of Education and All Hallows’ homes Fionntar and Scoil na Gaeilge, The School of English and the International Office. All three are within a 1km radius. You can walk, cycle and take frequent bus routes such as the 13 and 11.

Safety on Campus

Make sure to stay safe on campus. If you’re walking home late at night try to stay part of a group of friends. You can also use the new cashless taxi app called ‘Dash’ which means you don’t need money to get home! Never be stuck and stay with a friend if you need to!

COMMUNITY

Making sure each student feels part of our thriving multiapus community is very important to us. We want you to feel at home in DCU, so come along to our events and come hang out with us in the SU spaces on GLA and SPC. We also make sure that DCU is represented in the wider community and throughout the year we raise money for our chosen charities as well as working with various community and volunteer groups both locally and nationally. If you have any ideas on how you’d like to engage with DCU’s wider community or something within the college, contact Podge our Welfare Officer or email welfare@dcusu.ie.

EVENTS Studying can be hard and we all need to let off steam and socialize. We organise events for you all year around on all campuses. From big events like the Freshers’ Ball and the Summer Ball, to weekly fun in the Nubar, fundraising

events and shows. We get the best of Irish and International live music and comedy acts so be sure to keep track of what’s on at www.dcusu.ie and on our Facebook page. Can’t wait to see you there!

AWARENESS There are many issues that affect us all as students such as mental and sexual health, accommodation, exams and relationships to name a few. We will have many campaigns running during the year to keep you

informed on how to cope and how to get the best from university life. You can check our website for our latest campaigns or email welfare@dcusu.ie if you have any ideas on what students should be made aware of.

We work very hard to keep our neighbours informed on what is going on and we encourage all students to respect the community surrounding DCU with our SSHHH! Campaign.

SSHHH!! Please respect our neighbours and keep the noise down on your way to and from this event
