DUBLIN CITY CHINESE NEW YEAR 2010

12–21 FEBRUARY 2010 THE YEAR OF THE TIGER

WELCOME DUBLIN

CHINESE NEW YEAR FESTIVAL

Building on the success of Dublin Chinese New Year Festival (DCNYF) in the past two years we are delighted to launch our 2010 Festival celebrating the year of the Tiger, in the 4708th year of the Chinese calendar. DCNYF are committed to celebrating Sino-Irish relations showcasing Chinese culture and heritage to a new and wider audience while promoting integration. We are extending the festival into new areas this year, embracing links with our Irish past, new expressions of culture with national institutions and engaging with fresh exciting mediums to explore the intricate connection between our nations. In the year that will see Shanghai host the largest ever World Expo with the theme “Better City, Better Life”, we wish the very best to the Irish Pavilion and all the participants at this wonderful venue on the banks of the Huang Pu river. During these challenging times we hope the powerful and vigorous energy of the Tiger brings fresh innovation, passion and strength to our cities and countries. This is your Festival. This is your city. Welcome to the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival 2010. May the year bring you blessings of great fortune! From all the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival Committee...

2010 YEAR OF THE METAL WHITE TIGER

Third in the Twelve Year Cycle, the Tiger character is fearless, noble and bursting with vigour. They are affectionate, generous and have a great empathy for fellow human beings. Optimistic, tigers have powerful energy and would rather die trying than give up on their ideals. But beware: tigers are loners who don’t care much for company in their quests. They are essentially big babies who need their egos stroked often, and boy do they have huge ones! This courageous and fiery fighter is admired by the ancient Chinese as the sign that keeps away the three main tragedies of a household: fire, thieves and ghosts. Famous people born in the Year of the Tiger: Marco Polo, Ludwig von Beethoven, Oscar Wilde, Agatha Christie, Charles De Gaulle, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Dylan Thomas, Queen Elizabeth II, Marilyn Monroe, Oliver Reed, Tom Cruise, Jodie Foster, George Lee, Penelope Cruz, Leonardo DiCaprio and Katie Taylor. The Tiger gets on best with the Horse, Dragon and Dog but does not work so well with the Rabbit, Monkey, Snake and Ox. The years of the Tiger are 1902, 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998 and 2010.

It is better to have lived one day as a Tiger

than a thousand years as a sheep

Lord Mayor Emer Costello As Lord Mayor and First Citizen of Dublin, I am delighted to extend my best wishes for a Happy New Year to the Chinese community in Ireland. 2010 is the year of the Tiger characterised by vigour, bravery, loyalty and sometimes unpredictability. The participation in the festival of so many of our key cultural institutions, such as the Hugh Lane Gallery, National Museum, National Library, Dublin City Libraries, Dublin Zoo, NCAD and Chester Beatty Library, is particularly welcome. I want to congratulate the organisers for the rich and varied programme of events which will have widespread appeal. The Chinese New Year Festival is now firmly etched into the cultural calendar of the City and showcases not only the intricate culture of China but also shines a light on the long history of established relationships between Ireland and China. The contribution by Dubliners, such as Alfred Chester Beatty, Albert Bender and Augustine Henry, to promoting awareness and knowledge of Chinese culture is very much celebrated during this Festival. I want to acknowledge the positive contribution made to our city over many years by our Chinese community. The Chinese New Year Festival activities will offer us all a chance to celebrate and to learn about the wonderful traditions of a very ancient culture. This festival makes a significant contribution to the diversity of Dublin City and is key to promoting integration amongst all our communities. I hope that 2010 brings good health, good fortune and renewed vigour and strength to all!

Ambassador Liu Biwei On the occasion of the Spring Festival of the Chinese Lunar Year of the Tiger, I, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy, would like to extend my new year greetings to the whole Chinese community in Ireland, wishing you good health, success in your careers and happiness to your families. I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival and to Dublin City Council for your efforts enhancing exchanges and friendship between the Chinese and Irish people. I wish the celebrations every success! Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Ireland

Ambassador Declan Kelleher The Chinese New Year Festival in Dublin has become one of the most dynamic and enjoyable social events in Dublin. It is a window into Chinese culture, both modern and ancient. It is clear that the Chinese community in Dublin has, in a relatively short period of time, become a thriving and integral part of the fabric and culture of the city. I congratulate Dublin City Council and all those involved in the organisation of the festival. I wish them every success with their preparations for the festival in 2010, the Year of the Tiger. I also wish all those Chinese people living in Ireland a happy, prosperous and successful year. Declan Kelleher, Ambassador of Ireland to the People’s Republic of China

TELLING IMAGES OF CHINA

NARRATIVE AND FIGURE PAINTINGS 15TH-20TH CENTURY FROM THE SHANGHAI MUSEUM CHESTER BEATTY LIBRARY DUBLIN CASTLE, DUBLIN 2

DCNYF are delighted that the Chester Beatty Library will present this major exhibition of Chinese paintings to coincide with our 2010 Festival. On loan from one of the world’s finest collections of Chinese art, the Shanghai Museum, the exhibition includes thirty-eight scrolls and albums by artists active in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties and the early Republican period after 1912. Each of these ‘story paintings’ retells or illustrates a tale from folk and religious lore, oral and official history, poetry or literature. Collectively, these artworks give a taste of China’s rich mythology and lyric tradition. Telling Images of China will run from 12th February to 2nd May 2010 and is generously supported by the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel Dublin City and the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation. Lunchtime Lecture Series: Entering a Chinese World Drs Jerusha McCormack and John G. Blair will present a series of lectures based on their comparative culture studies which have been taught in the USA and China over the past thirty years. Beginning with “Re-orientating ourselves to enter a Chinese world” on Thursday 11th February, the lectures will run every Thursday for six weeks and are open to the public. Video Installation: Yang Fudong’s “Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest” Screenings: February 17th, 24th, 28th and March 3rd. First screened to great acclaim at the 2007 Venice Biennale, this is the Irish premiere of the complete five part, black-and-white cinematic masterpiece by Shanghai-based artist Yang Fudong. The artist imbues this mesmerising film with an avant-garde, film noir aesthetic while referencing the legendary Seven Sages, a popular subject in traditional East Asian art. Courtesy of ShanghART Gallery. The Chester Beatty Library will also run workshops and demonstrations on Chinese culture from 19th February until 17th April 2010.
