Serving God... by Serving Others Submitted by St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic School St. Jane de Chantal Parochial School welcomes students from all religious backgrounds. The common thread weaving academic curriculum into our traditional Catholic faith is "students serving God by serving others." In helping teachers, fellow students, outside organizations and community, children develop into confident individuals accepting personal responsibility and excelling as Christians in today's society. Since 1953, the school has provided a secure and nurturing environment where positive reinforcement and the Gospel message are spread through participation in various activities and social justice projects. A special ceremony where all students renew their commitment to social justice through their many school-wide giving projects is a tradition that marks the beginning of each school year. With all grades in attendance in church at the Commissioning Service, Principal Elizabeth Hamilton reminds students of their call to reach out and help others. “Each of us is called to be an advocate for social justice because this is when we truly become Christ’s disciples in service.” Representatives from some of the school’s giving projects come forward to talk about them. Some of the projects discussed this year were “Pennies from Heaven,” which collects pennies and loose change for surgery for needy children with facial deformities through "Operation Smile;" the Fall and Spring Walkathons benefiting the homeless and diabetes research; the Thanksgiving Day Food Drive for the Assumption Parish Outreach program; "Project Shoebox," where students pack and decorate shoeboxes filled with personal items for the homeless; "Adopt a Family" gifts, which are wrapped and presented to selected families at Christmas time; “Hoops for Heart,” which raises money around Valentine’s Day for the American Heart Association; Easter Baskets, which are given to the elderly and handicapped shut-ins at the Missionaries of Charity; and “Locks for Love,” in which students grew out their hair during the summer and donated up to 10 inches to an organization that makes wigs for children undergoing chemotherapy. During the ceremony, representatives from each grade place an electric candle in a box at the foot of Mary’s statue to represent themselves as being the “Light of Christ to others.” Mrs. Hamilton and Msgr. Donald Essex also place candles in the box. Each student and all the teachers and staff also sign and date their program to signify being commissioned as “a Disciple in Service and a Channel of Peace” at de Chantal School. The simple tradition serves as a reminder of the many things the students do to help others and the responsibility they carry for making a difference in God’s world. Students at St. Jane de Chantal took on special Lenten projects during the holy season to Page 2

reach out to others in need. On the suggestion of one of the parishioners, Mrs. Rita Burke’s firstgrade class made Lenten sacrifices to raise money for the children of the poverty-stricken Chulucanas Archdiocese in northern Peru. The first-graders cut out and decorated paper hearts and performed jobs at home to raise money to buy school supplies for the children. The class raised $70 and sent their hearts and money to the Augustinian Mission’s “Heart to Heart” program for the Chulucanas. Through the program, the Chulucanas children trade the paper hearts in for new school supplies. The de Chantal firstgraders’ $70 gave 35 children new supplies, and in return the students received a very satisfying lesson on the power of small acts of kindness. Ms. Cathy Ervin’s sixth-grade class also created a Lenten giving project called “Operation Pottery Bowl,” modeled after the Catholic Relief Services’ “Operation Rice Bowl.” In this case, money and supplies were collected to donate to a Navajo Indian Reservation in Thoreau, New Mexico and the St. Bonaventure Indian and Mission School. Students collected money as well as used clothing, toys, blankets and personal supplies. The supplies were shipped directly to the school and Ms. Ervin hand-delivered the money, which went toward buying food and water. Ms. Ervin taught math and science at this mission and has kept a close connection with its residents, returning to visit every year. In addition to service work, students and teachers enjoy class activities. The Kindergarten kicked off Spring by performing "The Tale of Peter Rabbit: An Operetta." The sixth-graders, along with lower school "munchkins," produced "The Wizard of Oz" to standing ovations. The fourth-graders dressed the part and sang "Songs Across America." Each grade and class studied a foreign country, while learning about its history and culture. Students displayed their talents at the annual Art and Science Fairs. The school band performed in competitions and the choir went to Italy last summer and sang at the Vatican for the Pope. Fun activities like Field Day, Secret Santa, Field Trips, Spring Fling and Spirit Week offer students unique chances to express themselves. And language, computers, library, PE, resource/enrichment programs, SMART technology learning boards, hot lunches, and the extended day program all combine to round out a complete day at St. Jane de Chantal. Our school is an extension of our parish and is a true community. Religion is the centerpiece of the school. Each day starts and ends with prayers, recited together as a school. Classes join the parish in celebrating Mass each day, while the entire school attends special Masses in "family" groups where older students are paired with younger students. Uniforms, respect, academic achievement, responsibility, leadership, service and faith are virtues lived by the de Chantal community. St. Jane de Chantal becomes a part of who you are for the rest of your life.

Clinton Christian School was founded in 1966 by the Bible Baptist Church (now Life Church) located in Upper Marlboro, MD. The school started with nine kindergarten students in a 20 x 49, white shingled building located on Dangerfield Road. The Lord, in His grace, immensely blessed the Ministry of Life Church and Clinton Christian School from its early humble beginning. By 1972, the vacated Prince Georges Democratic Club building and the surrounding property was purchased by the ministry. A new facility was constructed and a sanctuary seating 630 was added. Today, the Lord continues to bless this ministry. The group of 9 kindergarten students has grown into a K4-12th grade distinctively Christian school.

A Westminster Education — It’s worth it! Submitted by Westminster School

You’re a hardworking, caring parent who lives in one of the country’s most respected school districts … Why should you pay for your child’s elementary education when you can get it for free? • The years from 5 to 14 are the most formative. Integrity, attitude, work ethic, confidence and a sense of life’s possibilities are all shaped during this crucial span from infancy to young adulthood. So too are keenness of intellect, range and depth of knowledge, academic and life skills, and interest in continued self-development. The right school can make a profound difference in a child’s development and future. Since 1962, Westminster School has helped hundreds of parents raise confident, well-educated, high-achieving, kind young adults on their way toward fully realized lives. • A good education is not guaranteed by the latest educational trend, the flashiest textbooks or the most computers in each classroom. The best education is one which teaches the child to respect himself and others, to direct his own energies to good purpose, to think clearly, to make good choices, to be poised and articulate, and to act in ways that benefit himself and others. This can only be achieved with a well-honed philosophy and a

carefully designed program, consistently and effectively implemented. Westminster School’s well-defined philosophy and consistent approach to child rearing and the acquisition of a superior education have produced graduates who stand out from their peers. • A school that vacillates in its goals and methods or tries to please everyone has a difficult time upholding high standards of academic rigor, integrity, comportment, courtesy and presentation. Westminster School is known for its high standards and the consistency and fairness with which they are upheld. • A school that must accommodate everyone cannot best serve anyone. Large populations with vastly differing needs, shifting educational theories, the pressure for political correctness, and the one-size-fits-all approach of government regulations hinder the development of a strong and effective educational program. Westminster is an independent school which has developed an outstanding educational program and a commitment to high ideals, within a warm and uplifting environment. At Westminster, excellence is not a bumper sticker; it is a way of life. • At most elementary schools, 20 to 25 students share the attention of one teacher whose energies are spread across several subjects. Scarce resources may limit access to PE, art,

music, and other important and enriching experiences. In Westminster’s small classes, students are taught each subject by a specialist. They are steeped in classic literature; study in depth the great civilizations of the Western world; learn French and Latin; relish science labs, advanced math classes and applying what they learn in technology class; and enjoy daily PE and the opportunity for athletic competition. They go on an average of eight field trips each year, take art and music classes, and thrill to outdoor challenges. Every student is in a play every year, gaining poise, confidence and the courage to share his talents. • In many schools, well-intended teachers struggle to help their students progress, but they do not always have administrative backing or parental support. At Westminster School, parents, teachers and administrators work together to lovingly and firmly guide children toward good character, kindness and courtesy, a strong work ethic, a superior education, and optimism about their own potential. Westminster School offers a truly exceptional learning experience to a diverse community for one of the lowest independent school tuitions in the greater Washington area. and social awareness, and creativity. Our integrated and theme-based curriculum engages children to learn through exploring and using all of their senses. Education is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child, and a Glenelg Country School education will help you discover your child’s greatest gifts. Founded in 1954, Glenelg Country School is an independent, coeducational, nonsectarian, college preparatory day school for students in Pre-K3 through Grade 12. With an enrollment of approximately 800, the student to faculty ratio is 7:1 and the average class size is 16. The school occupies 87 acres of rolling fields and woodlands in Howard County, with four academic buildings, a performing arts center, and two gymnasiums. The school offers a rigorous academic curriculum, interscholastic athletics in Middle and Upper School, outstanding visual and performing arts programs, and summer programs.

Westminster School

3819 Gallows Road, Annandale 22003 703-256-3620; www.westminsterschool.com Grades K-8 Westminster School is dedicated to providing a superior elementary and middle-school education whose fundamental goals for each child are a disciplined and well-informed mind, strength of character, dedication to learning, generosity of spirit and joy in the possibilities of life. The Westminster program is founded on a traditional curriculum, rigorous academic standards, and an atmosphere that promotes respect, kindness, integrity, and a sense of excellence. Westminster’s academic program provides exceptionally thorough training in basic subjects within a broad humanities curriculum. The academic program is designed not only to instill factual knowledge and academic skills, but to develop intelligence and strength of character in each student according to his/her abilities. To accomplish these goals, instruction is presented in a structured classroom environment which stresses good study habits, organizational skills and personal responsibility. The curriculum consistently emphasizes depth of learning, critical thinking skills, development of oral and written expression, and high expectations for student accountability. This rigorous approach is taken in the belief that most children, when imaginatively motivated and well taught, will benefit enormously from the challenge and stimulation of intellectual discipline. Westminster believes in the importance of developing body and spirit, as well as mind, and of striving for balance among these energies. To those ends, students attend daily P.E. classes in all grades and are offered a variety of team sports in grades 4-8. Creativity and the confidence to explore and share talents are nurtured through regular art, music and dance classes, as well as the school’s outstanding drama program. Page 7

The educational experience of a K-8 school has been shown to be one of the healthiest and most productive for all children, and the ACDS community exemplifies all the elements of the best K-8 schools: a well-rounded education, small classes, engaged and experienced teachers, an academically-challenging curriculum, a competitive inclusive athletics program, and a supportive parent community. With the confidence and self-esteem a K-8 school provides, it is no surprise that children who graduate from ACDS are accepted into the high schools of their choice and excel in the most competitive high schools in the area including Gonzaga, T.C Williams, the Potomac School, Madeira, St. Stephens & St. Agnes, the Field School, Episcopal High School, and Sidwell Friends just to name a few. Alexandria Country Day School has grown each year since it was founded in 1983. In September of 2010 we celebrated the addition of 14,000 square feet of space, including a new regulation-sized gymnasium, a dining hall, and a dedicated performing arts center. These facilities complete the campus and enhance the academic and athletic programs.

If you are the parent of a young child searching for a nurturing kindergarten environment or the parent of an older child seeking a rigorous and supportive program during the challenging middle school years, we invite you to explore our website, become acquainted with our programs and teachers, and most importantly, visit the school to see our mission statement come alive in the spirit and the special atmosphere that characterizes ACDS. We look forward to meeting you soon.
