Serving God... by Serving Others Submitted by St. Jane Frances de Chantal Catholic School St. Jane de Chantal Parochial School welcomes students from all religious backgrounds. The common thread weaving academic curriculum into our traditional Catholic faith is "students serving God by serving others." In helping teachers, fellow students, outside organizations and community, children develop into confident individuals accepting personal responsibility and excelling as Christians in today's society. Since 1953, the school has provided a secure and nurturing environment where positive reinforcement and the Gospel message are spread through participation in various activities and social justice projects. A special ceremony where all students renew their commitment to social justice through their many school-wide giving projects is a tradition that marks the beginning of each school year. With all grades in attendance in church at the Commissioning Service, Principal Elizabeth Hamilton reminds students of their call to reach out and help others. “Each of us is called to be an advocate for social justice because this is when we truly become Christ’s disciples in service.” Representatives from some of the school’s giving projects come forward to talk about them. Some of the projects discussed this year were “Pennies from Heaven,” which collects pennies and loose change for surgery for needy children with facial deformities through "Operation Smile;" the Fall and Spring Walkathons benefiting the homeless and diabetes research; the Thanksgiving Day Food Drive for the Assumption Parish Outreach program; "Project Shoebox," where students pack and decorate shoeboxes filled with personal items for the homeless; "Adopt a Family" gifts, which are wrapped and presented to selected families at Christmas time; “Hoops for Heart,” which raises money around Valentine’s Day for the American Heart Association; Easter Baskets, which are given to the elderly and handicapped shut-ins at the Missionaries of Charity; and “Locks for Love,” in which students grew out their hair during the summer and donated up to 10 inches to an organization that makes wigs for children undergoing chemotherapy. During the ceremony, representatives from each grade place an electric candle in a box at the foot of Mary’s statue to represent themselves as being the “Light of Christ to others.” Mrs. Hamilton and Msgr. Donald Essex also place candles in the box. Each student and all the teachers and staff also sign and date their program to signify being commissioned as “a Disciple in Service and a Channel of Peace” at de Chantal School. The simple tradition serves as a reminder of the many things the students do to help others and the responsibility they carry for making a difference in God’s world. Students at St. Jane de Chantal took on special Lenten projects during the holy season to Page 2
reach out to others in need. On the suggestion of one of the parishioners, Mrs. Rita Burke’s firstgrade class made Lenten sacrifices to raise money for the children of the poverty-stricken Chulucanas Archdiocese in northern Peru. The first-graders cut out and decorated paper hearts and performed jobs at home to raise money to buy school supplies for the children. The class raised $70 and sent their hearts and money to the Augustinian Mission’s “Heart to Heart” program for the Chulucanas. Through the program, the Chulucanas children trade the paper hearts in for new school supplies. The de Chantal firstgraders’ $70 gave 35 children new supplies, and in return the students received a very satisfying lesson on the power of small acts of kindness. Ms. Cathy Ervin’s sixth-grade class also created a Lenten giving project called “Operation Pottery Bowl,” modeled after the Catholic Relief Services’ “Operation Rice Bowl.” In this case, money and supplies were collected to donate to a Navajo Indian Reservation in Thoreau, New Mexico and the St. Bonaventure Indian and Mission School. Students collected money as well as used clothing, toys, blankets and personal supplies. The supplies were shipped directly to the school and Ms. Ervin hand-delivered the money, which went toward buying food and water. Ms. Ervin taught math and science at this mission and has kept a close connection with its residents, returning to visit every year. In addition to service work, students and teachers enjoy class activities. The Kindergarten kicked off Spring by performing "The Tale of Peter Rabbit: An Operetta." The sixth-graders, along with lower school "munchkins," produced "The Wizard of Oz" to standing ovations. The fourth-graders dressed the part and sang "Songs Across America." Each grade and class studied a foreign country, while learning about its history and culture. Students displayed their talents at the annual Art and Science Fairs. The school band performed in competitions and the choir went to Italy last summer and sang at the Vatican for the Pope. Fun activities like Field Day, Secret Santa, Field Trips, Spring Fling and Spirit Week offer students unique chances to express themselves. And language, computers, library, PE, resource/enrichment programs, SMART technology learning boards, hot lunches, and the extended day program all combine to round out a complete day at St. Jane de Chantal. Our school is an extension of our parish and is a true community. Religion is the centerpiece of the school. Each day starts and ends with prayers, recited together as a school. Classes join the parish in celebrating Mass each day, while the entire school attends special Masses in "family" groups where older students are paired with younger students. Uniforms, respect, academic achievement, responsibility, leadership, service and faith are virtues lived by the de Chantal community. St. Jane de Chantal becomes a part of who you are for the rest of your life.

Clinton Christian School was founded in 1966 by the Bible Baptist Church (now Life Church) located in Upper Marlboro, MD. The school started with nine kindergarten students in a 20 x 49, white shingled building located on Dangerfield Road. The Lord, in His grace, immensely blessed the Ministry of Life Church and Clinton Christian School from its early humble beginning.
