DCM developed the Partners In Play (PIP) program to help empower caregivers to support their child’s development through open-ended play. DCM believes in the importance of the child-adult learning partnership, and the foundation of PIP was focused on building supportive relationships. Two months into the program as families were just beginning to connect, COVID hit and in-person programs ceased.

To keep the families engaged, DCM program specialists began texting participants as a group twice weekly. Communications included an activity and a message intended to stimulate a conversation as well as direct phone calls to individuals to connect and offer support. The PIP families have shared that the continued engagement by DCM staff has given them something to look forward to and focus on beyond their daily struggles during COVID. 11
