Pay By Mile Car Insurance

A Good Read

Drive less than 7,000 miles a year? New pay-by-mile car insurance could be right up your street.

The Prisoner by Penny McKinlay Nearly two decades into the 21st century the days of the Second World War seem as remote as ancient history. For the younger generation today, with their phones, TV on demand, and Netflix, even the experiences of their own parents as children seem distant from today. This is why books like The Prisoner are so welcome. One of a series of ‘Historical Adventures’ this exciting story gives an insight into what life was really like during World War Two.

If you don’t drive much, is it fair to pay the same for your car insurance as those who spend their lives at the wheel? By Miles, the UK motor insurance company, doesn’t think it is. They’ve come up with a different way of doing things: car insurance that works on a pay-by-mile basis – like a pay-as-yougo mobile phone bill. So the less you drive, the less you pay.

miles you’ve driven at the end of each month. Cover is fully comprehensive, your No Claims Discount is guaranteed as standard, and there’s an app that provides useful extras, like reminding you where you parked the car.

So, if you drive under 7,000 miles a year – and many of us actually drive much less – there’s a good chance that this type of car insurance could net you substantial savings. INFORMATION “Because every extra mile you drive adds to the risk of a claim, we think it’s Get a quick idea of your price in less about time lower mileage drivers were than a minute at www.bymiles.co.uk rewarded for driving less.” Readers can use the promo code With By Miles, you pay a lower annual ‘AD20’ to get a £20 credit (offer ends 31 July 2019). cost upfront to cover your car while it’s parked, then you just pay for the James Blackham, co-founder and chief executive of By Miles, said “Car insurance is something that has barely changed in 30 years. We’ve made a policy that’s fairer for people that don’t drive much.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng A perfect family, living in a perfect house, in a perfect little American town called Shaker Heights. The Richardsons, led by matriarch Elena are pillars of their community. A community where everything is carefully planned, from the road layout to the colour of the houses, and everyone knows their role in life. Elena has one simple guiding principle: you play by the rules. As this intriguing novel begins there is a fire at the Richardson’s house. The three older children, all in high school, are discussing the cause. Their conclusion is unanimous; their younger sister Izzy is responsible. We then flashback to a year before and we are introduced to Mia Warren and her teenage daughter Pearl. Mia is a photographer from San Francisco; she and Pearl live an almost nomadic lifestyle. But when they rent a home from the Richardsons their plan is to settle down.

Ten-year-old Bob and his friend Jack have had enough of the war. It has been going on for five years. Five years of rationing (Bob doesn’t know how much more cabbage he can face) and more importantly five years of no sweets. His Dad has been gone for a long time – a prisoner of war on the continent. Blackout blinds and ‘digging for victory’ are such a part of life that Bob cannot remember a time without them. But one day Bob and Jack meet an Italian prisoner of war working in a nearby field. Naturally Bob is scared – this is the enemy. But as he gets to know him his feelings change. Bob starts to feel sorry for him and wants him to stay with them rather than in the prison camp. But ultimately the prisoner is an enemy. Can he really be trusted, or does he have another reason for seeming so nice? Designed to complement the Key Stage 2 History curriculum, this short novel combines facts and suspense in a story to keep every young reader on the edge of their seats.

But plans can change. As the stories unfold these two families are drawn together by the teenagers, and tensions arise when friends of the Richardsons try to adopt a ChineseAmerican baby. Elena and Mia find themselves on opposite sides of a divided community in a conflict that will have far-reaching effects for both families. This is an engrossing novel which will have you questioning the secrets you hold in your own lives, wondering if there are indeed times when it would be so much better if we just burn everything down and start again.

Milk Alternatives Milk is a highly nutritious food and for hundreds of years was only available from animals, but nowadays there are many non-dairy alternatives, each with a different nutritional profile, flavour, colour and texture. Extracted from plants, they are a great milk substitute for those suffering from allergies, lactose intolerance or who may be following a vegan diet. Soya milk is possibly the most well known milk alternative. Made from soya beans, it is most nutritionally similar to cow’s milk, being high in protein and fibre. It also contains cancer-fighting isoflavones, can help prevent heart disease and can be beneficial to menopausal women by reducing hot flushes. It is safe for the lactose intolerant and those with milk allergies but can be high in sugar. With much less protein, but with a pleasant flavour and creamy texture, is almond milk. With a third fewer calories than semi-skimmed milk, it

is high in Vitamin E, but lacks other vitamins, minerals and fatty acids present in dairy milk. Made from ground almonds, water and sweetener, it provides a good source of magnesium, necessary for healthy bones, and is also beneficial for the immune system. Rice milk is the most hypoallergenic of all milk alternatives, often being found free of soya, gluten and nuts. It is high in carbohydrates but low in protein and its watery texture makes it unsuitable for baking and cooking. It is, however, very nutritious and can help lower blood cholesterol and control blood pressure, but could cause a sugar overload in diabetics. You should choose fortified versions. Similar in texture to, but not as nutritious as whole milk, coconut milk is low in carbohydrates but relatively high in fat. It works well in baking due to its nutty flavour and is a good choice for those suffering from multiple food allergies,

When stored in a fridge it can solidify and separate, but once stirred and brought back to room temperature will restore to its original texture. Oat milk is lactose and cholesterol free and is naturally high in the antioxidant Vitamin E. It also contains folic acid which is essential for repairing DNA and producing healthy red blood cells. It can be tolerated by people with

High in sugar but low in calcium and protein, it has a distinctive, oaty flavour which not everyone likes. Good luck as you try these milk alternatives, but remember that if you don’t consume dairy you will need to make up for the loss of nutrients, especially calcium and Vitamin D, from other sources, unless choosing a fortified product.

Bank Holiday Bonanza It’s that time of year when there seems to be a bank holiday bonanza. We’ve just had Easter Monday, and now we have two bank holidays in May. Us Brits certainly like to celebrate the arrival of spring. But as a nation we’re a funny old bunch (and that’s without mentioning Brexit!) and we tend to panic at all this extra time off. What on earth will we do with it? So here is my Brits guide to Bank Holidays... We ask everyone else what they’re doing, kind of like Christmas! As a nation we get excited about the prospect of a longer than usual weekend. We make vague plans about weekends away. According to my immediate circle of friends The Cotswolds / Paris / Ironbridge / The Lake District (delete as applicable) are all ‘lovely at this time of year...’ But we will always leave it too late, or won’t agree on a destination, or discover every hotel has suddenly doubled its prices, so we never actually go.

At least one friend will remind you in bitter tones that they are a nurse / barperson / taxi driver (delete as applicable) and they will be working while you are relaxing. Sympathise with them, and maybe buy them a bottle of wine. Without these people the country would grind to a halt. Every teacher friend you possess will make a huge deal about them not actually having a holiday weekend, because they will be marking...again! Teachers do this every holiday though, because they suspect we secretly think they are all part-timers. We check the weather forecast repeatedly and rejoice equally in headlines which read IT’S GOING TO BE A SCORCHER or IT’S GOING TO BE A WASHOUT...because Brits love weather…all weather! We buy paint in anticipation of giving a room a facelift. Bank holidays were absolutely designed for repainting the sitting room! We buy bedding out plants, compost and ‘garden features’, because Bank

holidays were absolutely designed for prettying our little plot of land. We tentatively suggest a barbecue to family and friends because as well as being obsessed by weather we are also eternal optimists about it. And if it rains, we still barbecue because that’s what you do on a bank holiday in May, and well...it gives the guests something to talk about while they sip their beer, ‘Looks like it might brighten up later...’ as the hail slams into the awning. We plan a film night. When we finally face the reality that there isn’t going

to be a heatwave, and the weather is more barmy than balmy we hit Netflix or Sky Movies and dial a pizza with extra pepperoni and a large garlic bread. Because Bank holidays and carbs were made for each other. Finally, we have the Sunday blues on a Monday night. Bank holidays are gone in the blink of an eye and all too soon it’s back to work. But cheer up, it’s only four days until the weekend. Unless you’re a teacher...they’ll be marking all weekend...again!

Fit at Fifty And Beyond! Attention over-fifties! When was the last time you visited a gym? You kind of know you should be making an effort, right? But do excuses such as ‘too expensive’; ‘lack of time’, and ‘no motivation’, sound familiar? Or maybe like me you have a pathological fear of lycra? But assuming you have no major health problems we can tackle this issue in bite-size chunks. As an over-fifty myself (quite a lot over if I’m honest) I overcame my own gymphobia and have been reaping the rewards since. Motivation This is the key. You need a specific goal. I wanted to achieve a healthier lifestyle with improved cardiovascular fitness. Time Look in your diary and you will find a spare hour at least once, or better still, two or three times a week.

Cost Can be as expensive or affordable as you want. A ladies-only gym with a personal trainer can be expensive, but a mixed gym membership in off-peak hours brings the cost down considerably and you can still get instruction and advice from an on-site trainer. Most gyms now take membership fees on a monthly direct debit basis. Clothing Lycra isn’t compulsory, but clothes must be comfortable, and this includes your undergarments. Remember, it’s not a fashion parade and chafed tender bits will put you off exercise forever! If you’re feeling hesitant repeat to yourself, “I can do this; I want a healthier and fitter me; I have the time to do this”. This is your Mantra. Say it often enough and you will start to believe it. Don’t be put off by glum folk who say it’s all a waste of time. Mix with positive people who will encourage you and improve your self-esteem.

Metabolism slows down as you get older and this can lead to weight gain, but exercise helps keep weight on an even keel because you build lean muscle. You also improve your immune system and cardiovascular system; reduce bad cholesterol and boost brain-power. Research shows that only 32% of men and 21% of women aged over 50 in England undertake some form of regular exercise. In the over-65’s this drops to 17% of men and 12% of women, and in Scotland the figures are even less! The trainers at your Gym will discuss the best way to get you back into shape. If you haven’t exercised before or for a long while they will advise that you start slowly and build up gradually. Good instructors are enthusiastic and well-trained and will arrange a set of

exercises to suit to you. Before you know it, you’ll have a routine e.g. 5 minutes bike, 5 minutes treadmill, 5 minutes weights. It will only take a few sessions before you improve and begin to compete with yourself. You’ll notice the benefits of improved posture; glowing skin; improved breathing, zest and vitality almost immediately. We are all living longer but perhaps we should also be aiming to live more healthily too. By Sharon Clement

National Vegetarian Week Although you can take supplements, it’s better to obtain calcium from your diet because food also supplies other nutrients such as phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin D, that are necessary for the body to be able to absorb and make use of calcium. Even if you have to avoid dairy, calcium-rich foods include beans, tofu, plant-based milks like soy, oat, rice or almond, and dark green vegetables such as broccoli, and kale.

May 13th – 19th This month plays host to National Vegetarian Week. More of us are turning to vegetarianism thanks to an abundance of scientific research that demonstrates both the health and environmental benefits of a plant-based diet. An estimated 70 percent of all diseases, including one-third of all cancers, are related to diet. A vegetarian diet reduces the risk for

chronic degenerative diseases such as obesity, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain types of cancer including colon, breast, prostate, stomach, lung and oesophageal cancer.

For those of us going through the menopause many vegetables and fruits are rich in phytoestrogens, the plant-based chemical compounds that mimic the behaviour of oestrogen.

A vegetarian diet tends to increase bone strength. When there isn’t enough calcium in the bloodstream, our bodies leach it from existing bone.

Maintaining a balance of these in your diet helps ensure a more comfortable passage through menopause. Soy is by far the most abundant natural source of phytoestrogens, but they are also found in apples, beets, cherries, dates, garlic, olives, plums, raspberries, squash and sweet potatoes.

This results in our skeletons gradually becoming porous and losing strength.

Vegetarians tend to have more energy. Whole grains, legumes, fruits

and vegetables are high in complex carbohydrates, so they supply the body with plenty of energizing fuel. Vegetarians also suffer less with constipation, haemorrhoids and diverticulitis! Eating a lot of vegetables necessarily means consuming more fibre, which absorbs water and bulks up, helping your stools stay soft, so waste can be easily pushed out of the body. A vegetarian diet is more environmentally friendly. Much of the grain we grow is fed to animals raised for slaughter. As a rough guide it takes 2,500 gallons of water, 5.5Kg / 12lbs of grain, nearly 16Kg /35lbs of topsoil and the energy equivalent of 4.5L /1 gallon of petrol, to produce one pound of beef! A vegetarian diet can sustain many more people, so is a more efficient use of resources. Finally, a vegetarian diet is cheaper. Eating vegetables, grains and fruits in place of beef, chicken and fish would cut individual food bills by an average of £500 per year. If you are thinking about becoming vegetarian, or even just incorporating more vegetarian meals into your normal diet, there is lots of information and some great recipes on the website www.nationalvegetarianweek.org

Garden View Scaling the Wall - Clematis What do you think of if I say ‘clematis’? I think most of us would think of the large, purple-flowered, “Jackmanii” or the rampant, bronze-leafed, pinkflowered montana rubens. They are both terrific plants, but I think they are a little over-used. My husband teases me that I tend to give my ‘clematis lecture’ when visiting friends’ houses and see one scrambling over a trellis. For your benefit I’ve written it down here. Clematis is known as the ‘Queen of Climbers’. It can be utterly spectacular and should definitely not be relegated to trellis. It can used for covering fences and arbours, old tree stumps, sheds and even in beds and borders. Choose wisely and you can have flowers from early spring until late autumn. For beds and borders you don’t want anything as vigorous as montana, which will smother everything it touches. Instead choose a daintier one such as a variety of texensis or viticella.

The flowers of the texensis hybrids look like finely cut bells. “Etoile Rose” is a beautiful dark pink edged with paler pink and “Princess of Wales” is a beautiful rosy red. Both of these will scramble through shrubs and flower all summer. They die back in winter so can be tidied up then. Viticella hybrids produce flowers which look like little pixie hats as they open. “Minuet” has purple and white flowers suspended on fine stems while “Purpurea Plena Elegans” produces double blooms which open into little purple rosettes.

old cracked upside-down terracotta pot with the bottom knocked out. When clematis is happy it will flower prolifically.

against a wall try cirrhosa balearica. This is a beautiful, winter-flowering variety with ferny foliage and palegreen flowers spotted with crimson.

Large-flowered clematis tend to produce a second flush in the autumn, but others like tangutica and orientalis wait to flower until then. Both of these are very vigorous and are great for covering unsightly sheds or old trees.

So, there it is…my clematis lecture. Hopefully you took notes and are ready to branch out into a whole new world of climbers.

Finally, if you have a sheltered spot

Happy gardening,

One of the most difficult sites to find climbers for is an east or north facing site. My absolute favourite clematis thrives in this situation and flowers in early spring. Clematis alpina “Pink Flamingo” produces nodding, semidouble, creamy flowers veined with deep pink. It has the added bonus of producing beautiful fluffy seed heads after the flowers fade. Clematis prefers its feet in the shade and its head in the sun. Make sure the plant’s roots are shaded: pieces of broken flagstone are ideal, or an

Depilation Depilation is the term used to describe hair removal. It is a procedure which has been popular since ancient times, and encompassed some amazing fashions. In Egyptian times for instance it was popular to remove all bodily hair, even that on your head with tweezers, pumice stone, beeswax or sugar based waxes. Hair removal was seen as a sign of class in Roman Times and hair removal and was popular with high society men and women. In the Middle Ages, Queen Elizabeth set a trend for removing eyebrows so that the forehead looked bigger. Now, we tend to follow the fashions of Hollywood when it comes to hair removal, and new techniques often emerge from the States.

running wax. For women all areas can be covered, including face, arms, legs and intimate areas. In recent years there has been a considerable increase in male waxing, with more men opting to have their chest, abdominal area or shoulders waxed. Plucking using traditional tweezers is generally less common now, but is still used for the removal of facial hair, particularly eyebrows. Threading is one of the safest, quickest and easiest ways to remove unwanted facial hair. It is an ancient art which removes the whole hair, including the follicle, and can last up to six weeks. A cotton thread is pulled along unwanted hair in a twisting motion, to trap it in a mini lasso before pulling it out.

In the UK, many salons now offer the following:

Bleaching and treatments using washes or sugar bases are also available.

Waxing, either using strips or free

More sophisticated treatments

which aim to reduce hair growth include electrolysis and laser hair removal. They are offered at specialist salons and private clinics, and suitability can depend on skin tone and hair colour. In recent years there has also been an increase in barbers offering hot towel shaves to their customers. Outside the salon there are many ways we can remove hair at home. Kits for waxing and bleaching and many depilatory creams can be found at most pharmacies and supermarkets. Manufacturers continue to develop their products adding new fragrances and additional benefits such as moisturising. We can also buy electrical products to help. In addition to wet razors a vast range of electric razors can also be purchased along with epilators for personal use.

There is a growing industry in male grooming products too which includes post shaving balms and moisturisers for men. Despite the fact that all depilation methods seem to have some pain attached we seem as keen as ever to be fuzz-free. By Susan Brookes-Morris

Exam Stress How to come out on top It used to be thought that being a child meant living through the happiest days of your life. How times change. Now, with league tables, SATS, and GCSEs, many children are falling victim to stress. So, if you (or your children, if you’re a parent reading this) are feeling pressured, with no-where to turn, we have some great tips to help you get through exam season relatively unscathed. First a few words about stress. Stress is caused by the way our body responds to outside events, not necessarily by the events themselves. Some stress is good: adaptive stress releases adrenaline and helps us to rise to a challenge. It’s a temporary state and the body returns to normal very quickly. Problem stress occurs when the body stays in a heightened state for a prolonged period of time. It’s this type of stress which is causing problems for today’s children. Unlike when we were young and exams were end-of-term or even end-of year events, today’s child has seemingly relentless pressure to perform all year round with the result that they get very little down-time in which their body can recover from all that adrenaline.

parents who themselves deal well with potentially stressful situations. Finally, it’s useful to understand that while exams are important, they are not worth making yourself ill over. You can always sit them again. Exam Busting Tips! Get plenty of rest - sleep is important Take regular breaks - you’ll stay fresher Leave time for some fun - when you’ve reached your revision goal reward yourself with an activity you enjoy Be realistic - Don’t overdo it

The Offside Rule Will Somebody Please Explain… …the Offside Rule Saturday 18th May is FA cup final day. Footie fans up and down the land will be involved in animated discussions along the lines of... “It should definitely be banned. It’d open up the field and create more goal-scoring opportunities. Defenders would have to be more alert.” “Are you mad? You’d get players hanging around the goal line waiting for a touch. It’d be easier to score but so boring it wouldn’t be worth watching…”

Deemed by the referee to have participated in the area of active play. And this is the bit of the offside rule which causes all the arguments because it’s open to debate what ‘participated in the area of active play’ actually means. FIFA tried to clarify the definition back in 2005 with the following

Eat properly - avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee or coke.

“Like Bayern Munich versus Arsenal?”

Exercise - It’s a great stress buster and improves your mood

“Yeah, exactly. Fancy another pint?”

Interfering with play by touching the ball

They are of course referring to the notoriously difficult to understand offside rule.

Obstructing an opponent trying to get to the ball

Be nice to yourself - Don’t beat yourself up about the things you haven’t done, be positive about all you’ve achieved Relax - When it all gets too much just chill for a while. You’ll feel much better. Useful Web Addresses www.studentminds.org.uk/examstress. html www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxietydepression/coping-with-exam-stress

Not everyone suffers in the same way from stress. Some children seem to cope with it well. Research has shown that these children are generally more positive, have a good sense of humour and have

The offside rule has attained mythical status over the years. It states: A player is offside when the ball is kicked by a team-mate (that bit is important) if the referee thinks he satisfies all four of the following: He is in his opponents’ half of the field He is nearer the opponents’ goal line than the ball, i.e. in front of the ball

Gaining an advantage from being in an offside position - including playing a ball which has rebounded from the post or crossbar. Judging by the debates which still rage up and down the land I’m not entirely sure that FIFA has laid that one to rest. The Offside Trap

He is nearer the opponents’ goal line than the second last opponent, i.e. in front of him (The last opponent is generally the goalkeeper)

This involves the defending team collectively moving away from their goal to catch an opposition striker in an offside position.

At this point I need to make clear that being offside in itself is not an offence. He is only classed as offside if, as well as satisfying the previous three points, he is:

Clearly, this carries the danger of the match officials not spotting the infraction and the striker being left facing only the goal keeper, and a great opportunity to score.

Walking For Fitness Most of us have grown up and lived much of our lives exposed to the standard conception of “exercise for fitness.” We are accustomed to seeing joggers, tennis players, and healthylooking people working out in gyms and thinking of their activities as the only way to get fit by exercising. And of course, they are doing just that. But there is more to exercising for fitness than the stereotypical view of the sweating, head-banded runner or the muscled weightlifter. The simple act of walking is an exercise that has numerous health benefits, and in comparison with more vigorous exercise it even comes out ahead in several areas. There are many benefits of walking for fitness. First, there are quite a few people out there who would prefer to be in the outdoors or in a large space like a mall rather than in a gym or on a tennis court, so they are naturally attracted to walking for fitness. Not everyone likes competitive sports or being in loud, sometimes unenjoyable environments like fitness clubs and gyms. For these folks, walking is great because you can walk solo and listen to music or just enjoy nature, you can walk with a spouse or friend and enjoy a conversation, and you can walk just about anywhere. Second, walking regularly will keep you physically healthy. Fitness experts and physicians agree that even a short walk can do wonders for the human body. It can strengthen the cardiovascular system by exercising the heart, and it reduces blood pressure and increases circulation. It is reasonably aerobic (increases your oxygen intake and lung capacity)

May Day

and of course low impact - it’s easy on the feet, ankles and knees. Regular walking strengthens your muscular and skeletal systems and reduces the likelihood of arthritis and other bone and muscle disorders that come with aging. It helps to lower the bad cholesterol and increase the good, and it decrease the risk of developing type II diabetes. While it’s doing all that, walking for fitness can help you lose weight. If you’re careful to use good footwear and not to over-exert yourself, there is simply nothing about walking that is not good for your body. Third, walking is good for your mental health. It is known to improve your mood and decrease stress levels. That effect alone is priceless in today’s world, and those benefits multiply because lower stress and better mood make your body healthier as well.

My mum is proud to recall the year she was Maid of Honour to the May Queen. We have a photo of her and several other young girls, surrounding the May Queen who is wearing a flowing white gown and coronet of flowers.

If you suffer from depression it is a healthy alternative to mood-altering medicines that can have negative side effects. The simple act of walking also increases your energy and slows the aging process, which is more good news for your mental health.

My own memories of May Day celebrations are less regal. I remember clutching a coloured ribbon attached to a maypole and weaving in and out of other children to make pretty patterns for our parents to watch and enjoy.

Just knowing that there are so many benefits to walking for fitness provides a built-in incentive to do it regularly. And knowing that it can make you healthier and more fit are good reasons to keep walking for fitness it’s a smart move.

This traditional image of May Day, which in Pagan times celebrated the completion of seeding and springtime fertility with village fetes and community gathering, has little to do with why May 1st is celebrated in Britain today, and why it is recognised internationally as a public holiday.

Committing to an exercise program comes down to one thing and that is motivation. If you want to lose fat or simply want to increase your general fitness level than a regular walking schedule could be for you.

May Day is International Workers Day, and its history is a little more colourful than the ribbons of the maypole or the handkerchiefs waved around by Morris Dancers! The late nineteenth century saw employees working 10-18 hour days in unsafe and difficult conditions. Capitalist factory owners, keen to maximise their output, kept them running as many hours as possible with a “sun up to sun down” working day. Death and injury were common. An early British Socialist reformer,

Robert Owen, campaigned for the work day to be divided into thirds, coining in 1817 the phrase; “Eight hours labour, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest.” By the late 1800s, Socialist movements in both Britain and the USA were working towards the same end: an eight hour working day. In 1884, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions in the US proclaimed that “eight hours shall constitute a legal day’s labor from and after May 1st 1886.” Without the backing of the government or businesses, this ideal was not realised, so when the day arrived 300,000 workers walked off their jobs in protest. Strikes, picket lines, beatings, shootings, rock throwing and bombings followed, and finally major progress was made in 1914 when the Ford Motor Company cut its standard work day to eight hours, whilst also doubling their workers’ pay. Amazingly, productivity increased significantly and profit margins doubled within two years. This encouraged other companies to follow suit. In the UK the Labour government declared May 1st a bank holiday in 1978 and it has been used regularly by protest groups to fight for their cause, especially for workers and their rights. In 2011 the Tories made attempts to scrap May Day and move the bank holiday to October, but for now it remains in place and an opportunity to remember the sacrifices of all those who fought to secure better working hours and conditions for us all!

Winning Wines: Australia

National Smile Month National Smile Month is the largest and longest-running campaign to promote good oral health.

Each wine producing area of Australia grows an array of grape varieties, to create excellent wines, many of which are award-winning productions. Institutions constantly research new techniques. Australia produces and makes available, splendid wines, worldwide. With crisp, fresh, fine and elegant, rich, sweet, sparkling and more, there is something for everyone and every occasion. Voyager Estate planted their first vineyards, on the family-owned property, during 1978. The Margaret River region enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with excellent soils and biodiversity and is very suited to growing Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties, as well as being renowned for their blend of Sauvignon Semillon. Voyager Estate farms sustainably and now, increasingly, uses organic practices. Utilising the best of modern technology, the highest quality old and new oak barrels for fermenting, Voyager Estate creates outstanding wines with character and elegance. From their range of wines I selected Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon for my white choices. Both productions have enticing bouquets of citrus and tropical fruits, which follow through to the mouthfeel and palate sensation perfectly. Having excellent textures and an easy-drinking style, I found these great to accompany fish dishes and a lot of cuisine.

the mouth’s pleasures continue the enjoyment, which is well-structured, balanced and elegant. Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz are two further excellent red productions. Again, the impressive deep red colour is ‘inviting’. The bouquets both have an abundance of juicy, dark berry fruits and a superbly smooth palate follows through, with fine structure and balance, showcasing regional varietal characteristics. Powerful red productions, fantastic with beef dishes, steaks, venison and much more. These reds are very good for cellaring, too. Sparkling Chenin Blanc is ‘clean, fresh and crisp’. Delicate citrus fruit flavours are evident from nose to palate. Produced with the best Chenin Blanc grapes, this elegant sparkler is a definite ‘pleaser’.

Between 13th May and 13th June 2019, National Smile Month will promote positive messages and to engage people with maintaining a healthy mouth. For the best oral hygiene: Brush your teeth - At least two minutes twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Make sure you clean your teeth before bed, as your mouth doesn’t have the same salivary protection during the night as it does during the day. Floss - Each tooth has five sides; a toothbrush only cleans three sides. The other two sides are where most decay and foul odours originate.

Use a mouthwash - This freshens breath and coats the teeth with a protective layer, helping to prevent plaque build-up. Avoid those which contain alcohol though. Cut out sugary foods and drinks - Sugary snacks feeds the bacteria in your mouth which ultimately break down your enamel and cause decay.

To clean between the teeth requires dental floss or tiny inter-dental brushes. Clean your tongue - This is an important part of oral hygiene and works wonders with stale, smelly breath. You can use a tongue scraper or a toothbrush

The Magnificent Spiegeltent! The Magnificent Spiegeltent.in Nottingham Market Square.

show, The Nottingham Guild of Magicians and Bamalamasingsong, plus comedian Milton Jones, groundbreaking band Stone Foundation, The Greatest Nottingham circus cabaret show, and much more.

Roll up! Roll up! Join Nottingham for 15 days of wonder in The Magnificent Spiegeltent... A beautiful, century-old travelling dance hall, made of wood and complete with ornate decoration and mirrors, will host a packed schedule of great events this May, including music, circus, cabaret, theatre, comedy and burlesque, with something for the entire family, plus food and drink. Live band karaoke, burlesque and a Mock the Week comedian will be amongst the entertainment on offer at the Magnificent Spiegeltent, which makes its return to Nottingham this spring following a year off. Taking over Old Market Square from Saturday, May 4-Saturday, May 18, the 100-year-old pop-up venue will be hosting a packed schedule of music, circus, cabaret, theatre and comedy as well as food and drink Show highlights include The Gilded Merkin Burlesque and Cabaret – Nottingham’s biggest Burlesque

Plus a varied programme of events for children and families. Known for their wild and decadent ambiance, Spiegeltents are exquisite pop-up venues that suit an eclectic performance programme. Literally translated as ‘mirror tent’, Spiegeltents were originally built in Belgium in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The magnificent round tent is made of dark wood with intricately carved panels, stained glass windows, bevelled mirrors and an impressive draped ceiling. The boothed seating that lines the edges makes way for a grand dance floor with an in-built stage where performers such as Marlene Dietrech famously sung ‘Falling in Love Again’ in a Spiegeltent in Paris in the 1930’s.

Nottingham’s traditional Goose Fair would see folk travel from far and wide to celebrate the end of harvest and pick up a Goose (or two) which were driven annually across the fens from Norfolk. Whilst as far as we know Spiegeltents were never hosted at the Goose Fair of old, entertainment was a significant feature of the event, both in the ale houses around Old Market Square. You could also find them in the surrounding streets and in freak shows across the fair, where you could have expected to see literally anything

from The smallest child in the world to The Yorkshire Giant Brothers, despite usually being an elaborate illusion from enterprising showmen. The Salon Perdu is one of a handful of the unique and legendary tents left in the world today; it has spent its life travelling the world from New York to Sydney, and since 2015 annually to Nottingham, as a small part of the Goose Fair returns to its spiritual home of Old Market Square. The Perfect Sunglasses

Choose the Perfect Sunglasses It’s that time of year when we traditionally invest in a new pair of sunglasses for the summer. There’s so much choice though! How do you whittle it down to the perfect pair? First choose the right colour frame. Warm browns and tortoiseshell suits warmer colouring. Cool greys, blues and blacks suit cool skin colouring or grey hair. Next pick a pair that flatters your features. There are no hard and fast rules. Look at what your face lacks and use the sunglasses to even out your proportions. Rounder faces often lack definition and benefit from a sunspec with strong lines. Long thin faces might need a softer, rounder style with an upswept edge. Try on as many as you can. Take selfies and compare. Add length to a short nose with a high bridge or shorten an overly long nose with a low (butterfly shape) bridge. A strong jaw can be balanced with a heavier top bar.

Sunspecs are all about protecting your eyes from UV so make sure that any pair you buy has a CE kite mark, and that sunglasses are marked UV400. Cheap sunspecs not bearing these marks will probably not provide adequate protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Choose larger frames for protection but bear in mind that deeper the frame the shorter your face will look, so if you have a long face shape, go ahead and choose a deep frame.

Email: sargdec@live.co.uk

A shorter face needs a frame that’s less deep, while still providing enough coverage for UV protection. Take your eyebrows into account! If your brows stick out of the top of the frame at an odd angle, you’ll look permanently surprised, or angry! Choose your sunnies wisely and you’ll be able to add instant glamour to any outfit. Is Your Car Ready For Summer? Every year as we approach winter there are articles popping up advisineg us to prepare our cars for the cold weather, however, your care needs to be ready for hot weather too. Here are a few tips to make your summer driving a breeze. If you are planning a road trip this summer, it’s important to remember that you shouldn’t just put petrol in your car and go. A pre-trip vehicle check can determine how road-ready your vehicle is so you can take steps to have any problems fixed before heading out on holiday, and to avoid the potential safety hazards of breaking down miles from home. Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions. Check the brake system and make sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free. Check filters and fluids, including engine oil, antifreeze/coolant,

windshield washer and power steering, brake and transmission fluids. Dirty air filters can waste gas and cause the engine to lose power. Check the hoses and belts and replace if they become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Underinflated tires reduce a vehicle’s fuel economy and uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. Check that the gas cap is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating. Treat your car to a good car wash. Winter takes a toll on every part of your car — everything from your brake lines to your engine gets blasted by a constant barrage of salt, ice, water, sand, and general filth. Interiors become filled with dirt and tracked-in

grime. Do yourself a favor and clean your car top to bottom, inside and out. Use good, high-quality cleansers and high-pressure water on the outside to get rid of salt and trapped sand, and be sure to hit the wheel wells and underbody. Try out the air conditioning to ensure it’s working properly. If the vents do not blow cold air, you will likely need a system recharge. Mechanics can also check for leaks.

Many local garages will perfom an air conditioning check up for free. If you have ever been caught in a traffic jam on a hot summers day with irritable kids you will know how important good air conditioning can be. Your local garage will usually also have a check up available for summer motoring, so why not drop in and let them give your car a professional once over.

Hire A Handyman

Do you have lots of household DIY tasks mounting up? Are you starting to feel a little overwhelmed?

Dining Out

Hire a handyman! A good handyman will have right tools, and know-how to get the job done efficiently. Hiring someone who knows what they are doing will eliminate a lot of stress. Also, they will almost certainly save you money, especially if you would have to buy the right tools before you start or make a mistake which has to be put right! When hiring: Be Specific - Give an idea of the scale and scope of the job or jobs. For example, ‘Rehang garden gate, repaint gate and 17 metres of 2m high garden fence.’ Measurement are important as it gives idea of the scope of the task. Send photos if you can - In the example above send photos of the gate and the fence. A picture will save a lot of words and help the handyman provide an accurate quotation.

Remember cheapest isn’t necessarily the best. Check an online price guide. There is lots of guidance available, but you should definitely bear in mind the total hours required. The handyman should be insured and have his own tools. Check all insurance documents carefully. Take your time, be pleasant and ask questions. Get a quote in writing to make sure you know exactly what you’re getting. Then sit back and relax while someone else takes care of your household jobs! By Tom Hancock

Founded during 2009, Gandhi Indian Restaurant has provided very impressive dining experiences for locals and visitors alike since opening and a genuine warm welcome awaits all. Gandhi is known for being one of the finest, fully licensed and air conditioned restaurants in Castle Donington, located approx 3 miles from Donington Park Race and Events Venue and also East Midlands Airport. Appetisers have a grand array and can include Samosa (Meat or Veg), Tandoori Chicken, Spicy Fish Pakora and Tikka Kebab Platter (chicken tikka, lamb tikka, sheek kebab, tandoori chicken), for 2 persons. A very good selection of Tandoori Delicacies, marinated in yoghurt based sauce, baked on skewers in a clay oven and served with salad and mint sauce are very popular, with Tandoori Salmon Fish and Tandoori Mixed Grill being regularly chosen.

Desserts offer tempting creations and with a range of teas/coffees, bring an exceptional dining experience to a close. The wines/drinks have high-quality productions, with great pairings, to accompany the cuisine, if desired. Gift vouchers are available – perhaps surprise someone special? All dietary requirements can be catered for, plus parties and events easily arranged. The function room is regularly booked well in advance and provides a very attractive area for occasions and gatherings. Takeaways and free home delivery (orders over £12 and within 5 miles radius) are offered, also. At popular times booking is (most) advisable.

Masala and Jalfrezi dishes offer further, very flavoursome, options. Traditional, Biryani, Balti and other groups of cuisine have something for everyone. Sizzling platter dishes are chef’s recommendation (and speciality), with Lamb, Tandoori Mix and Tandoori Jhinga being amongst a most impressive list of mains. Coconut Tandoori Mixed (chicken tikka, lamb tikka, tandoori chicken, prawns and shish kebab, cooked with onions, aromatic coconut, pineapple chunks, fresh green chillies and topped with coriander), proved an excellent choice. Perfectly cooked and with superb, complementing flavours, plus excellent presentation, this definitely merits ‘Compliments to Chef’. Indian Nan Breads and Parathas are a speciality, too. The brigade of very talented chefs, plus kitchen personnel, ensure all cuisine is cooked and presented with excellence.

Gandhi is a recommended restaurant – very much so. Gandhi Indian Restaurant 3-5 Borough Street, Castle Donington DE74 2LA Tel: 01332 855121 / 01332 855044 www.gandhicastle.co.uk
