Hardy Annuals Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t. In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds. Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. They are also easy-to-grow, so are brilliant for beginner gardeners. For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet. Good flowers for the annual-novice include poppy, calendula, larkspur, fried- egg plants (limnanthes), love-in-

the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers. If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottage-garden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded. The king of the hardy annuals though has to be the sunflower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly, plant two seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties. A favourite of mine is Prado Red, which as the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out, they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant. If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals, then sweet peas are surely the fragrant queens. Old-fashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly

smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms, so he obviously knew a thing or two about it.

Next time you’re at the garden centre... walk right on by the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot ...and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year. Happy gardening! What Are Ectopic Heartbeats Ectopic heartbeats are extra heartbeats that occur just before a regular beat. Ectopic beats are normal ad usually they are not a cause for concern. About 70% of medically normal adults without any symptoms at all have ectopic beats if monitored over 24 hours. They are far less common in children and are more likely to be a result of an underlying heart abnormality in those cases. There are two types of ectopic beat: PAC - Premature atrial contractions, which begin in the upper chambers of the heart. PVC - Premature ventricular contractions, which begin in the lower chambers of the heart. An ectopic beat might be felt as an extra awareness of the heart beating; a feeling of faintness; a sensation of the heart stopping for a second, or a fluttering sensation in the chest. The fact that some people become aware of their ectopic beats doesn’t automatically mean there is a problem.

Most commonly people who become aware of their ectopic beats are also susceptible to anxiety. What tends to happen is that during an episode of anxiety their system is flooded with adrenalin and their heart begins to race. They become aware of their heart racing, and then suddenly they experience a (perfectly normal) ectopic beat, only it feels anything but normal to them because their heart is already racing.

Tasty March Recipe Spinach and Ricotta Lasagne

For the creamy spinach and ricotta sauce

A creamy vegetarian version of this supper classic

375g Spinach

This dish is always a hit with everyone that tries it. Even works for people who say they don’t like spinach!

Knob of butter 500g Ricotta 250g Mascarpone 4 medium free-range egg yolks Grated zest 1 lemon

Serves 6-8

Pinch freshly grated nutmeg

Preparation time 45minutes

40g Parmesan, grated

Cooking time 30 minutes Method

Drain the cooked spinach in a colander and press to squeeze out any excess water. Roughly chop, then mix with the rest of the creamy sauce ingredients. Taste and season well.

For the tomato sauce

Add the garlic and fry for a further minute. Pour in the red wine; turn up the heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes to reduce the liquid by half. Add the tomatoes, sugar, Worcester sauce and tomato purée.

Cover with another layer of lasagne sheets, top with half the remaining white sauce, then all the remaining tomato sauce.

When Sarah’s 10-year-old daughter complained of headaches after school, she did what any sensible parent would do and booked an eye test. After a 15-minute exam she was told that Maisie did not need any glasses and that there was nothing wrong with her. After a few months, Maisie’s symptoms hadn’t disappeared, and her grades were suffering. “She didn’t want to read and was falling behind in class.” Sarah took her back to the optician, who this time gave Maisie some glasses. “She wore them for a couple of weeks but gave up after that as they weren’t helping, in fact she said that they made things worse for seeing the whiteboard. Sarah’s friend advised her to take Maisie to see the optometrist who had helped her son when he had struggled with similar issues. “Immediately I could see that this was a different kind of eye exam.” We

didn’t feel rushed. The optometrist was really interested the type of difficulties Maisie was experiencing, when they happened, and how she coped with them. She performed a whole battery of tests and explained everything as she was going along. She told us that Maisie was having difficulty co-ordinating her eyes so was having to put in more effort to ‘see’, and as she became more tired with the effort of school and study, it became harder and harder for her to keep up the co-ordination, so she just gave up. It all made sense. She’d come home grouchy, rubbing her eyes and with a headache. It was all too much for her.” Optometrists who specialise in what is known as Behavioural Optometry, or who run specialist binocular vision clinics understand that an eye examination should be about more than whether a child can read the bottom line of a chart some distance away. In a classroom eyes need work as a team at all distances. They should be able to point accurately at the same

point on a page, then be able to refocus quickly and accurately on the whiteboard and back again, hundreds of times per day. They need to be able scan across lines of text without drifting off to another line. If eyes can’t work as a team, children might try for a while but often develop unhelpful coping mechanisms like turning their head, screwing their eyes up, and excessive blinking. Eventually they give up and may become disenfranchised from learning. Some groups of children, like those with dyslexia, or those with underlying health conditions are more susceptible to the binocular vision system malfunctioning. Binocular vision examinations measure the ability of the child’s eyes to work together, and then the optometrist can make helpful suggestions, such as glasses, or exercises (sometimes called vision therapy), or a mixture of both. Occasionally coloured overlays might prove useful too.

Unfortunately, these types of examination are not available on the NHS, but Sarah says that her money was well spent. “Maisie had some new glasses and a short course of exercises. Within weeks her grades had picked up and she was coming home more cheerful and with no headaches. What The Doctor Ordered The rise and fall and rise of the Dr. Marten boot When you read the words Dr Martens, what do you think of? Skinheads? Clowns? Workmen? Or high fashion? Because in spite of being associated with all the groups above, Dr Martens have remained one of the most consistently cool items of clothing in the past 50 years. They really were invented by a doctor too, Dr. Klaus Maertens, a German army doctor. He injured his foot while skiing and found standard issue WWll army boots very uncomfortable and not at all conducive to recovery.

The classic yellow-stitched Dr. Martens AirWair boot was launched on April 1st, 1960. The date gave rise to the name 1460. This footwear was no April Fool joke though. The boots quickly became popular with factory workers, postmen and police officers. But these were not the kind of people known for inspiring fashion choices so how did Dr. Martens become so cool?

So, he designed his own shoe, which replaced the leather soul with one which had air-cushioning. Originally the boots were sold as orthopaedic devices and bizarrely the majority of its customers for the first fifteen years were housewives, mainly over forty years old.

It started with youth sub-cultures, like Mods and Skinheads, who adopted the boots as symbols of working-class pride. There was some irony in the fact that when these groups clashed with police BOTH sides were wearing Dr. Martens!

But then an advert for the boots with the air-cushioned sole caught the eye of the Griggs family, who ran a shoe

he chose to wear them on stage at concerts. From about 1966 they began to gain fashion status, generally by groups who associated themselves with ant-establishment values. Punks, Goths, New Wave and Grunge groups all embraced the Dr. Marten, and they gradually became more mainstream with Britpop. But by the new Millennium sales were dropping. The Dr. Marten 1460 was seen as old. Eventually the company moved production to China.

In 2004 a new line of footwear was introduced, deliberately designed to appeal to younger buyers. They were softer, easier to break in and had a translucent heel. This paid off and sales began to climb again. In 2012 Dr. Martens had its best year for sales ever. Shortly after they were sold to the investment firm Permira, and have continued to rise in popularity ever since, becoming a mainstream wardrobe staple. I wonder what the original Dr. Maertens would make of all that!

The FitBit is probably the best known brand on the market, with several models to choose from: The entry level Zip, at around £50, tracks your steps, distance walked and calories burned. “So it’s a fancy pedometer then?” I hear you ask. Well, yes, basically, but it’s more responsive and you can sync it to your computer or smartphone to see your activity presented as a graph. This makes it much easier to monitor your activity levels over time and track you progress. The Zip also acts as a watch, and there are various other extras, such as the ability to log your food intake. Feel like you’re getting your full eight hours of sleep, but still feel tired? You might want to opt for One or Flex, which track your sleep as well as your activity. They also have silent alarms, to wake you up, but not your partner. One clips onto your clothing, while Flex is worn like a watch. There are some differences in what they offer – Flex doesn’t have a clock, for example. Charge is similar to Flex, in that you wear it like a watch, but it comes with some added extras, such as a clock.

Charge HR is designed for people who work out regularly, as it can recognise different exercises, and has an automatic heart-rate monitor to help maximise your training. Top of the range is Surge, at around £200. It’s been designed for people who are really serious about their sports performance, and want to monitor every aspect of their training. For instance, you can track the route you’re running using GPS. You can also control music and read texts that come through to your smartphone. So which one to go for? Well Zip is a great choice if you just want to check whether you’re walking those recommended 10,000 steps a day. If you cycle, run, or enjoy another sport, you’ll want to opt for a more advanced model. Now, a warning… It is possible to get ever so slightly obsessed with the FitBit. You can easily find yourself checking it hundreds of times a day,

which can distract you from real life, and you can find yourself pushing ever harder, unnecessarily. On the positive side, it does encourage you to increase your activity levels and build up your fitness. Like so much in life, the key is moderation. Tempted? Head to: www.fitbit.com

How To Choose An Estate Agent The housing market is on the move, albeit slowly, which may prompt you to make a move yourself! It might be a while since you were last in the business of buying or selling a home, so how do you choose the right estate agent for you? One of the best methods is personal recommendation, but you can also take a look around your local area to see which estate agents are the most active. Don’t be fooled by the number of ‘For Sale’ signs on display though. It’s the ones that say ‘Sold’ which count! Look for estate agents experienced in selling properties similar to yours; chances are they will have a good pool of prospective buyers. Once you have identified potential companies, visit their offices and pretend to be a buyer. You will soon discover how helpful the staff members are, and how keen they are to make a sale! From your potentials, make a shortlist of three and invite them to value your property, but don’t go automatically for the highest evaluation - this may simply be a ploy to attract your business. Do a bit of research yourself to give an idea of what similar properties are selling for, and check the agents’ experience and knowledge of your area. Ask what their service includes: Where will your property be advertised? Newspapers and online property websites such as Zoopla and Rightmove are fairly standard. Who will conduct the viewings? What marketing materials will be produced? Photographs, floor plans and virtual online tours are some you could expect. Will a sale board be provided?

Finally, agree on a fee. Sole agents charge 1%-2% of the selling price, and multiple agents 1.5%-2.5%, but you might be able to negotiate a better rate. However, a low fee could result in reduced enthusiasm. A better alternative might be to negotiate paying the full fee if the full asking price is achieved, and a sliding scale for any offers below it. It is possible to sell your home online. Currently responsible for 5% of property sales, online agents such as Emoov, House Network and Tepilo offer a basic pre-agreed package of services for a typical flat fee of £3001,000, with extras available at an additional cost. Online agents are cheaper and more convenient, with call centres open during evenings and weekends, but they are short of local knowledge, don’t conduct viewings and may lack the incentive to negotiate the best selling price due to their fixed fee policy. Chances are you will need to become more personally involved in the sales process. Beware The Ides Of March! “Beware the Ides of March!” I’ve heard this saying often throughout my life but only recently thought to find out about it.

So, the Ides of March is actually the anniversary of Julius Caesar’s murder and Shakespeare played on this with his oft-quoted soothsayer.

It’s actually a quote from William Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar. Early in the play a soothsayer declares it, forewarning of the eventual assassination of Caesar (apologies if that spoils the ending for anyone!)

People adopted the expression and it is still used as a warning that something bad could befall a person on this date.

But what are the Ides of March? In the ancient Roman calendar the Ides was one of three markers used each month, which related to the position of the moon. Ides comes from the Latin verb ‘to divide’

In the next six seconds, someone in the world will have a stroke. Are you among those at highest risk? A stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures or is blocked by a clot.

The Ides in March fell on the 15th and marked the full moon.

A stroke caused by a blockage is called an ischemic stroke. A hemorrhagic stroke is the result of a ruptured vessel that bleeds into or around the brain.

It happens that Julius Caesar was murdered on March 15th, 44BC. He was stabbed to death by a group of Senators shortly after being declared ‘Dictator Perpetuus’, which means, ‘dictator for life.’ His death lead to the Liberators’ civil war and the new Principate period of the Roman Empire. 01623 759161

The blockage or bleeding deprives brain cells of adequate oxygencarrying blood and the cells start to die, which can lead to ongoing mental and physical impairment (difficulty thinking, speaking and moving) or even death. To reduce the risk of a stroke, particularly in ageing loved ones, follow these recommendations: • Eat a healthier diet. • Manage blood pressure. • Maintain physical activity. • Lose extra weight. • Lower cholesterol levels.

I Gotta Wear Shades The Future’s So Bright… I gotta wear shades! Summer is just around the corner, and with it – hopefully – the sun. It’s a time to start thinking about eye protection. I have a theory that sunspecs are the coolest accessories ever invented. They add instant glamour to any outfit; disguise tired eyes, and offer handy hangover relief when required. In addition, you don’t have to worry about whether they make your bum look big, and even a designer pair won’t break the bank. Yet as useful as these qualities are they pale into insignificance beside sunspecs’ real function, which is to protect our eyes. The sun’s UV rays can damage the delicate structures of the eye, such as the lens and the retina. This damage can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration in later life. UV FACTS UV penetrates clouds so even when you can’t see the sun your eyes may still be damaged unless you protect them UV is most intense between 10am and 2pm. Make sure that your eyes are protected during this time. UV is more powerful at high altitude The effects of UV are amplified in reflective environments: snow, sand, water and concrete.

A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap offers excellent eye protection screening around 50% of all UV. Any UV light you’re exposed to now can cause eye problems years down the line, such as macula degeneration (AMD) and cataract, Decisions, decisions! Handy hints to help you choose. All sunspecs must carry the CE mark to prove they filter 99-100% of all UV rays. Wraparound styles offer the most protection but the large sunspecs favoured by WAGs and celebrities are also good. Grey tints reduce brightness without distorting colour. Brown and amber offer best protection from visible blue light and reduce haziness. Green is good for contrast and a great all-rounder Rose is good for water-sports and offers good contrast for objects viewed against blue or green backgrounds.

Hypnosis: Fact & Fiction We’ve all seen them. Old horror movies where someone is put into a hypnotic trance, adopts a zombie like state and performs all kinds of terrible acts they would never dream of in normal life.

March 31st is Mothers’ Day and I wonder if I’m the only mum who finds it irritating? I mean, I love flowers and chocolates as much as anyone, but I value them more when they come ‘just because’, rather than because Clinton Cards emailed a prompt.

This image of hypnosis might put some of us off, but in reality hypnotherapy (hypnosis used to promote healing or positive development) works very differently.

And don’t get me started on Primary schools and their ‘Mothers’ Day mornings. Rearranging my working day so my child won’t be disappointed by my absence is stress I don’t need…I thought Mothers’ Day was supposed to be about me! No, Mothers’ Day feels phoney.

Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a state of deep sleep and patients cannot be made to do anything they would not ordinarily do. Totally safe, patients stay in control and can terminate the hypnotic state at any time. In fact, most people can’t tell the difference between a hypnotised and ‘waking’ state. Different for everybody, a hypnotic trance may feel like daydreaming for some, whilst others may simply experience feelings of relaxation or lethargy. Weightlessness and a tingling sensation in fingers are other possibilities. During hypnosis, the analytical left-hand side of the brain is turned off, whilst the non-analytical righthand side is made more alert. The conscious mind becomes suppressed, and the sub-conscious mind more aware. In this altered state, positive suggestions for change are accepted readily. As the subconscious mind is deeper-seated and more instinctive than the conscious mind, this is the part which has to change for a person’s behaviour and physical state to alter. During a hypnotherapy session, the patient remains alert, but experiences a sense of deep relaxation as they focus on the hypnotist’s voice suggesting ideas, concepts and lifestyle changes.

Hypnotherapy aims to re-programme patterns of behaviour within the mind, thus enabling irrational fears, phobias, negative thoughts and suppressed emotions to be overcome.

Mothers’ Day Musings

Amongst other things, it can be used to help people lose weight, overcome addictions, conquer stammers, improve sleep, deal with pain, and release repressed events from the past. Hypnotherapy is not about being made to do things, in fact it is the opposite - it is about empowerment. In order for hypnosis to work, the patient must want to change some behaviour or habit and be highly motivated to do so. The readiness and ability of patients to be hypnotised varies considerably, and hypnotherapy generally requires several sessions in order to achieve meaningful results. However, the patient can learn the technique of self-hypnosis which can be practised at home, to reinforce the usefulness of formal sessions with the therapist. In fact, it is common for patients to be given a recording of their hypnotherapy session to listen to at home. It is generally accepted that all hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis and that a hypnotist merely helps to facilitate the experience. So, forget all those myths and remember that hypnosis could be your single most effective tool for change! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

My husband is a hands-on dad, who knows how to cook and wield a vacuum cleaner; but if I didn’t remind him about Mothers’ Day he’d forget, and so would the kids, because he wouldn’t remind them. Last year I didn’t remind, they forgot, then they all felt bad, which wasn’t my aim, because I didn’t care.

So, we had a chat. I told them I knew they loved me, and Mothers’ Day wasn’t important to me, but perhaps each of them could pick a time when they did something little and nice for me, when I least expected it, and tell me it was for Mothers’ Day. I don’t think I expected much to happen, other than to free them (and me) from social pressure, but a few weeks later my 12-year-old left a dark chocolate Bounty Bar on my desk one evening (food of the Gods and difficult to find!), with a little post-it that read ‘For Mothers’ Day because I know it’s your favourite’; and a few weeks after that my nine-year-old drew me the most beautiful picture of a dragon because he knows I like dragons. Somehow those gifts felt more real than any I’d received before. I’ve not mentioned it again this year. Maybe they’ll remember, maybe they won’t. Take Care Of Your Best Friend Our pets are special to us, so the decision to allow someone else to look after them can be a difficult one. Sometimes we just have to however, because of work, a holiday, or perhaps a stay in hospital. Our worries about giving this responsibility to someone else can be eased however, if we take careful steps when choosing a pet sitter, dog walker or crèche type service. Try to seek out professionals who have been recommended by others. Ask others for their suggestions when you take your dog to the park or to the vet. If you don’t have anyone who can make a recommendation, take a look at the register held by the National Association of Pet Sitters and Dog Walkers. If leaving your pet in someone’s care you’ll want to know what level of competency and knowledge they have. If your animal is staying at a kennel, cattery or someone’s house then that person must hold a licence with their local authority. The number of dogs and cats that may

be accommodated will be specified on the licence along with other specific conditions. An officer is sent out to the potential premises to ascertain whether they are fit to hold such accreditation and should a license be granted, it is then renewed on a yearly basis. The Association is dedicated to promoting professionalism and ethical standards within the pet sitting industry. They have a Code of Practice for their members and you can also read reviews on their website. It is advisable to observe your pet with the sitter or walker. How do they interact, are you sure the person can cope if you have a particularly boisterous dog or a pet that needs medication? Seeing the person handle your pet can be very comforting. If your dog is to stay at the pet sitter’s property, you will want to visit to ensure the environment is suitable. These meetings will also give you a chance to question the carer and check on their knowledge and experience.

Your pet sitter or dog walker should create a written record of your contact details and your pet’s needs and note down your vets. If they are to take your dog for walks, you will need to discuss frequency, locations, and whether they can let your dog off its leash. Do tell them if your dog pulls or has a habit of barking at bicycles for example. The pet carer should ask you to sign a contract confirming the arrangements

and the terms and conditions. You will want to check that they have relevant insurance to cover them against liability for incidents involving your pet. If they will be coming to your home to look after your pet or to take them for a walk when you are not in, you may also want to see a Criminal Records check. If both parties are fully advised, there should be no surprises and the service will be better because it is tailored to your pets needs. This will give you more peace of mind.

Make Your Mother’s Day From the day you have a baby or adopt a child, your life changes forever. People tell you this when you’re pregnant, but it’s only when it happens that you really understand what they mean. Suddenly there’s someone who depends on you entirely. Every decision you make from now on will be based on their needs or desires. Being a mother can be the best of jobs and the worst of jobs. For every heartwarming moment of pride and loveliness, there’s a blazing row or slammed door (but hopefully with a hug and a sorry afterwards). Mums have to take on every role in the family – carer, teacher, agony aunt, sergeant major, personal assistant, taxi driver… And it doesn’t stop when the children leave home. Now approaching 40, I still rely on my mum for advice, friendship, help with childcare, emergency loans and the occasional kick up the backside to get things done. It’s only as you get older, especially if you have children of your own, that you realise how your parents felt as you grew up – why they made you do your homework, go to bed, stop fighting with your brother, eat properly, save money and above all, be careful! Mother’s Day gives us the perfect opportunity to say thank you to our mums for everything they have done and still do for us.

The founder of Mother’s Day in the US, Anna Jarvis, eventually regretted campaigning to get the day recognised because it became so commercialised. She hated the fact that people would buy a card with a printed message rather than writing a letter. It’s lovely to buy or make a card and give flowers and chocolates. You can also do something special to show you care – maybe take on a job that she hates or treat her to a day of pampering. But this year, why not go beyond the message in the card and write a few personal lines of your own to tell your mother how much you love her. Make sure she knows that she really is the best mum in the world (like mine).

It’s no understatement to say that he revolutionized children’s literature. Prior to Seuss, US children had been taught to read using the rather sterile Dick and Jane books.

Dr Seuss Day You’re never too old, too wacky or wild, to pick up a book and read to a child… This is taken from the US website for ‘Read Across America’ Day, which takes place on March 2nd - the anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s death. The slogan caught my eye when I was looking for something else entirely because it was so unmistakeably Seuss-ish, and in our family Dr. Seuss is worshipped across the generations.

Fascinating Fact One of Seuss’s most popular books, Green Eggs and Ham, was written as the result of a bet that he could not write a book using only 50 words. The words are, in order of appearance: I am Sam; that; do not like; you green eggs and ham; them; would here or there; anywhere; in a house with mouse; eat box fox; car they; could; may will see tree; let me be; train on; say the dark; rain; goat; boat; so try may; if; good; thank.

In spite of being born in Kent, I was brought up on the works of Dr, Seuss. My mother was a trainee English teacher who wrote her dissertation on him. She adored the way he played with language. My own children could recite The Cat in the Hat word-forword before they could ever read it for themselves.

I can remember in the UK, aged five, being taught using the English equivalent, Peter and Jane. I remember my mother rolling her eyes and saying, ‘I’m sure we can find something more fun than this darling,’ before presenting me with The Cat in the Hat. I was hooked.

Like all the best young-children’s authors, Seuss never talked down to them. His work is playful, silly, and anarchic, something which appeals to children the world over, yet he never had any children of his own.

Seuss published more than 40 books during his lifetime and they’ve sold over half a billion copies, more even than JK Rowling. We don’t celebrate Dr. Seuss in this country as they do in the US, but perhaps we should. Without him we might not have the marvellous works of Julia Donaldson, Lynley Dodd or Lauren Child. So Happy Seuss Day!

He was born Theodore Seuss Geisel. He started using Seuss while at university and added the ‘Dr.’ as a joke; because his father always said he wanted him to be a professor! He loved to write and Thedraw AD PAGE cartoons, yet his first book, And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street, was rejected by 27 publishers - a lesson to aspiring authors everywhere.

Choose A Wedding Photographer After you’ve set the date and booked your venue, your choice of photographer is probably one of the most important decisions to make about your wedding.
