Hardy Annuals Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t. In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds. Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. They are also easy-to-grow, so are brilliant for beginner gardeners. For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet. Good flowers for the annual-novice include poppy, calendula, larkspur, fried- egg plants (limnanthes), love-in-

the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers. If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottage-garden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded. The king of the hardy annuals though has to be the sunflower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly, plant two seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties. A favourite of mine is Prado Red, which as the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out, they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant. If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals, then sweet peas are surely the fragrant queens. Old-fashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly

smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms, so he obviously knew a thing or two about it.

Next time you’re at the garden centre... walk right on by the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot ...and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year. Happy gardening! What Are Ectopic Heartbeats Ectopic heartbeats are extra heartbeats that occur just before a regular beat. Ectopic beats are normal ad usually they are not a cause for concern. About 70% of medically normal adults without any symptoms at all have ectopic beats if monitored over 24 hours. They are far less common in children and are more likely to be a result of an underlying heart abnormality in those cases. There are two types of ectopic beat: PAC - Premature atrial contractions, which begin in the upper chambers of the heart. PVC - Premature ventricular contractions, which begin in the lower chambers of the heart. An ectopic beat might be felt as an extra awareness of the heart beating; a feeling of faintness; a sensation of the heart stopping for a second, or a fluttering sensation in the chest. The fact that some people become aware of their ectopic beats doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t automatically mean there is a problem.

Most commonly people who become aware of their ectopic beats are also susceptible to anxiety. What tends to happen is that during an episode of anxiety their system is flooded with adrenalin and their heart begins to race. They become aware of their heart racing, and then suddenly they experience a (perfectly normal) ectopic beat, only it feels anything but normal to them because their heart is already racing.

Tasty March Recipe Spinach and Ricotta Lasagne

For the creamy spinach and ricotta sauce

A creamy vegetarian version of this supper classic

375g Spinach Knob of butter

This dish is always a hit with everyone that tries it. Even works for people who say they don’t like spinach!

500g Ricotta 250g Mascarpone 4 medium free-range egg yolks Grated zest 1 lemon

Serves 6-8

Pinch freshly grated nutmeg

Preparation time 45minutes

40g Parmesan, grated

Cooking time 30 minutes Method Ingredients Pack lasagne sheets 125g Mozzarella, sliced 30g Parmesan For the tomato sauce Olive oil 1 Onion, finely chopped 2 Garlic cloves, crushed 150ml Red wine 2 x 400g Tins chopped tomatoes 1 tsp Sugar 2 tbsp Worcester sauce 2 tbsp Tomato purée Bunch fresh basil, chopped

Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/ gas 6. Heat the oil in a medium pan, then fry the onion for 6-8 minutes until soft. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute. Pour in the red wine; turn up the heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes to reduce the liquid by half. Add the tomatoes, sugar, Worcester sauce and tomato purée. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until thickened. Add the basil, and season well. Place the spinach in a large pan with a knob of butter. Cover and cook over

When Sarah’s 10-year-old daughter complained of headaches after school, she did what any sensible parent would do and booked an eye test. After a 15-minute exam she was told that Maisie did not need any glasses and that there was nothing wrong with her. After a few months, Maisie’s symptoms hadn’t disappeared, and her grades were suffering. “She didn’t want to read and was falling behind in class.” Sarah took her back to the optician, who this time gave Maisie some glasses. “She wore them for a couple of weeks but gave up after that as they weren’t helping, in fact she said that they made things worse for seeing the whiteboard. Sarah’s friend advised her to take Maisie to see the optometrist who had helped her son when he had struggled with similar issues. “Immediately I could see that this was a different kind of eye exam.” We

If eyes can’t work as a team, children might try for a while but often develop unhelpful coping mechanisms like turning their head, screwing their eyes up, and excessive blinking. Eventually they give up and may become disenfranchised from learning. company in Britain, specialising in sturdy work boots, and they bought the patent. They made a few tweaks to the design, including reshaping the heel, and they also anglicised the name. The classic yellow-stitched Dr. Martens AirWair boot was launched on April 1st, 1960. The date gave rise to the name 1460. This footwear was no April Fool joke though. The boots quickly became popular with factory workers, postmen and police officers. But these were not the kind of people known for inspiring fashion choices so how did Dr. Martens become so cool?

So, he designed his own shoe, which replaced the leather soul with one which had air-cushioning. Originally the boots were sold as orthopaedic devices and bizarrely the majority of its customers for the first fifteen years were housewives, mainly over forty years old.

It started with youth sub-cultures, like Mods and Skinheads, who adopted the boots as symbols of working-class pride. There was some irony in the fact that when these groups clashed with police BOTH sides were wearing Dr. Martens!

But then an advert for the boots with the air-cushioned sole caught the eye of the Griggs family, who ran a shoe

he chose to wear them on stage at concerts. From about 1966 they began to gain fashion status, generally by groups who associated themselves with ant-establishment values. Punks, Goths, New Wave and Grunge groups all embraced the Dr. Marten, and they gradually became more mainstream with Britpop. But by the new Millennium sales were dropping. The Dr. Marten 1460 was seen as old. Eventually the company moved production to China.

In 2004 a new line of footwear was introduced, deliberately designed to appeal to younger buyers. They were softer, easier to break in and had a translucent heel. This paid off and sales began to climb again. In 2012 Dr. Martens had its best year for sales ever. Shortly after they were sold to the investment firm Permira, and have continued to rise in popularity ever since, becoming a mainstream wardrobe staple. I wonder what the original Dr. Maertens would make of all that!

Well Zip is a great choice if you just want to check whether you’re walking those recommended 10,000 steps a day. If you cycle, run, or enjoy another sport, you’ll want to opt for a more advanced model. Now, a warning… It is possible to get ever so slightly obsessed with the FitBit. You can easily find yourself checking it hundreds of times a day,

How To Choose An Estate Agent The housing market is on the move, albeit slowly, which may prompt you to make a move yourself! It might be a while since you were last in the business of buying or selling a home, so how do you choose the right estate agent for you? One of the best methods is personal recommendation, but you can also take a look around your local area to see which estate agents are the most active. What marketing materials will be produced? Photographs, floor plans and virtual online tours are some you could expect. Will a sale board be provided?

Finally, agree on a fee. Sole agents charge 1%-2% of the selling price, and multiple agents 1.5%-2.5%, but you might be able to negotiate a better rate. However, a low fee could result in reduced enthusiasm. A better alternative might be to negotiate paying the full fee if the full asking price is achieved, and a sliding scale for any offers below it. It is possible to sell your home online. Currently responsible for 5% of property sales, online agents such as Emoov, House Network and Tepilo offer a basic pre-agreed package of services for a typical flat fee of £3001,000, with extras available at an additional cost. Beware The Ides Of March! “Beware the Ides of March!” I’ve heard this saying often throughout my life but only recently thought to find out about it.

So, the Ides of March is actually the anniversary of Julius Caesar’s murder and Shakespeare played on this with his oft-quoted soothsayer.

It’s actually a quote from William Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar. Early in the play a soothsayer declares it, forewarning of the eventual assassination of Caesar (apologies if that spoils the ending for anyone!)

People adopted the expression and it is still used as a warning that something bad could befall a person on this date.

But what are the Ides of March? In the ancient Roman calendar the Ides was one of three markers used each month, which related to the position of the moon. Ides comes from the Latin verb ‘to divide’ The Ides in March fell on the 15th and marked the full moon. It happens that Julius Caesar was murdered on March 15th, 44BC. He was stabbed to death by a group of Senators shortly after being declared ‘Dictator Perpetuus’, which means, ‘dictator for life.’ His death lead to the Liberators’ civil war and the new Principate period of the Roman Empire.

Hypnosis: Fact & Fiction We’ve all seen them. Old horror movies where someone is put into a hypnotic trance, adopts a zombie like state and performs all kinds of terrible acts they would never dream of in normal life.

March 31st is Mothers’ Day and I wonder if I’m the only mum who finds it irritating? I mean, I love flowers and chocolates as much as anyone, but I value them more when they come ‘just because’, rather than because Clinton Cards emailed a prompt.

This image of hypnosis might put some of us off, but in reality hypnotherapy (hypnosis used to promote healing or positive development) works very differently.

And don’t get me started on Primary schools and their ‘Mothers’ Day mornings. Rearranging my working day so my child won’t be disappointed by my absence is stress I don’t need…I thought Mothers’ Day was supposed to be about me! No, Mothers’ Day feels phoney.

Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis is not a state of deep sleep and patients cannot be made to do anything they would not ordinarily do. Totally safe, patients stay in control and can terminate the hypnotic state at any time. In fact, most people can’t tell the difference between a hypnotised and ‘waking’ state. Different for everybody, a hypnotic trance may feel like daydreaming for some, whilst others may simply experience feelings of relaxation or lethargy. Weightlessness and a tingling sensation in fingers are other possibilities. During hypnosis, the analytical left-hand side of the brain is turned off, whilst the non-analytical righthand side is made more alert. The conscious mind becomes suppressed, and the sub-conscious mind more aware. In this altered state, positive suggestions for change are accepted readily. As the subconscious mind is deeper-seated and more instinctive than the conscious mind, this is the part which has to change for a person’s behaviour and physical state to alter. During a hypnotherapy session, the patient remains alert, but experiences a sense of deep relaxation as they focus on the hypnotist’s voice suggesting ideas, concepts and lifestyle changes.

Hypnotherapy aims to re-programme patterns of behaviour within the mind, thus enabling irrational fears, phobias, negative thoughts and suppressed emotions to be overcome.

Mothers’ Day Musings

Amongst other things, it can be used to help people lose weight, overcome addictions, conquer stammers, improve sleep, deal with pain, and release repressed events from the past.

My husband is a hands-on dad, who knows how to cook and wield a vacuum cleaner; but if I didn’t remind him about Mothers’ Day he’d forget, and so would the kids, because he wouldn’t remind them. Last year I didn’t remind, they forgot, then they all felt bad, which wasn’t my aim, because I didn’t care.

The readiness and ability of patients to be hypnotised varies considerably, and hypnotherapy generally requires several sessions in order to achieve meaningful results.

In fact, it is common for patients to be given a recording of their hypnotherapy session to listen to at home. It is generally accepted that all hypnosis is ultimately self-hypnosis and that a hypnotist merely helps to facilitate the experience.

I don’t think I expected much to happen, other than to free them (and me) from social pressure, but a few weeks later my 12-year-old left a dark chocolate Bounty Bar on my desk one evening (food of the Gods and difficult to find!), with a little post-it that read ‘For Mothers’ Day because I know it’s your favourite’; and a few weeks after that my nine-year-old drew me the most beautiful picture of a dragon because he knows I like dragons.

The Power Of Play

Recently, on a cold February day, we met up with some friends and their children on a beach. We ran amok, played tag, whooped, built a huge communal sandcastle and returned home cold, damp, sandy and happier than we’d been for quite a while. We’d given in to play and we felt much better for it. Our society tends to dismiss play for adults. At worst it’s seen as an unproductive, guilty pleasure. Adults are supposed to be serious and let’s face it, between work and ferrying children around to various activities there’s little time for play. When we do play, it often tends to be competitive (tennis, squash, golf), and this is particularly true for men. But research suggests that playing is just as important for adults as for children. It makes us happy, helps with problem-solving, improves our creativity and strengthens our relationships. The author and psychiatrist Stuart Brown, has spent decades studying the power of play in prisoners, business people, artists and Nobel Prize winners among others. He’s reviewed over 6,000 “play histories,” case studies that explore the role of play in each person’s childhood and adulthood. He found that lack of play was as important as other factors in predicting criminal behaviour among murderers in Texas prisons. He also found that playing together helped couples connect on an emotional level, and that play could even help strangers to bond and also act as a healing tool.

But what is play? How do we define it? Brown calls play a “state of being,” “purposeless, fun and pleasurable.” For the most part, the focus is on the actual experience, not on accomplishing a goal. And play means different things to different people. My friend Rita knits and crochets for pleasure, I write, walk my dog and take photographs, my husband water-skis, and our neighbour restores old mopeds. You can benefit from play even if you don’t have much spare time. The research suggests we only need a little bit of daily play to boost our productivity and happiness. If you don’t think you know how to play, write your own ‘play history’ down on paper. What did you do as a child that excited you? Did you engage in those activities alone or with others? Did you play with trains? Did you draw? Did you build dens? How might you recreate that today? Surround yourself with playful people. We wouldn’t have had such fun on the beach that day if our friends had been po-faced and serious. The fact that we were all up for running around and playing was important. The best playful people are children. Spend time with them and experience the magic of play through their eyes. Make Your Mother’s Day From the day you have a baby or adopt a child, your life changes forever. People tell you this when you’re pregnant, but it’s only when it happens that you really understand what they mean. Suddenly there’s someone who depends on you entirely. Every decision you make from now on will be based on their needs or desires. Being a mother can be the best of jobs and the worst of jobs. For every heartwarming moment of pride and loveliness, there’s a blazing row or slammed door (but hopefully with a hug and a sorry afterwards). Mums have to take on every role in the family – carer, teacher, agony aunt, sergeant major, personal assistant, taxi driver… And it doesn’t stop when the children leave home. Now approaching 40, I still rely on my mum for advice, friendship, help with childcare, emergency loans and the occasional kick up the backside to get things done. It’s only as you get older, especially if you have children of your own, that you realise how your parents felt as you grew up – why they made you do your homework, go to bed, stop fighting with your brother, eat properly, save money and above all, be careful! Mother’s Day gives us the perfect opportunity to say thank you to our mums for everything they have done and still do for us.

The founder of Mother’s Day in the US, Anna Jarvis, eventually regretted campaigning to get the day recognised because it became so commercialised. She hated the fact that people would buy a card with a printed message rather than writing a letter. It’s lovely to buy or make a card and give flowers and chocolates. You can also do something special to show you care – maybe take on a job that she hates or treat her to a day of pampering. But this year, why not go beyond the message in the card and write a few personal lines of your own to tell your mother how much you love her. Make sure she knows that she really is the best mum in the world (like mine). Mother’s Day is celebrated all around the world, usually in March or in May. In the UK, it is a mixture of a Christian tradition, and the celebration of motherhood that began in the USA in the early 20th century. During the 16th century, people in service would return to their home or ‘mother’ church on the fourth Sunday in Lent – Mothering Sunday. Mother’s Day as we know it became a regular event in the 1950s, largely thanks to businesses keen to exploit its commercial potential.

Health Texting Service New health texting service for parents and carers A new text messaging service offering Nottinghamshire parents and carers access to confidential health advice has been launched by Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s Healthy Family Teams. With more and more people using hand held mobile devices, the new Parentline text messaging service is an easy way for parents and carers to confidentially ask for help about a range of issues, such as feeding and nutrition, emotional health and wellbeing, child development, behaviour difficulties and family health.

Dr Seuss Day You’re never too old, too wacky or wild, to pick up a book and read to a child… This is taken from the US website for ‘Read Across America’ Day, which takes place on March 2nd - the anniversary of Dr. Seuss’s death. The slogan caught my eye when I was looking for something else entirely because it was so unmistakeably Seuss-ish, and in our family Dr. Seuss is worshipped across the generations.

Fascinating Fact One of Seuss’s most popular books, Green Eggs and Ham, was written as the result of a bet that he could not write a book using only 50 words. The words are, in order of appearance: I am Sam; that; do not like; you green eggs and ham; them; would here or there; anywhere; in a house with mouse; eat box fox; car they; could; may will see tree; let me be; train on; say the dark; rain; goat; boat; so try may; if; good; thank.

In spite of being born in Kent, I was brought up on the works of Dr, Seuss.

It’s no understatement to say that he revolutionized children’s literature. Prior to Seuss, US children had been taught to read using the rather sterile Dick and Jane books.

My mother was a trainee English teacher who wrote her dissertation on him. She adored the way he played with language. My own children could recite The Cat in the Hat word-forword before they could ever read it for themselves.

I can remember in the UK, aged five, being taught using the English equivalent, Peter and Jane. I remember my mother rolling her eyes and saying, ‘I’m sure we can find something more fun than this darling,’ before presenting me with The Cat in the Hat. I was hooked.

Like all the best young-children’s authors, Seuss never talked down to them. His work is playful, silly, and anarchic, something which appeals to children the world over, yet he never had any children of his own.

Seuss published more than 40 books during his lifetime and they’ve sold over half a billion copies, more even than JK Rowling.

He was born Theodore Seuss Geisel. He started using Seuss while at university and added the ‘Dr.’ as a joke; because his father always said he wanted him to be a professor! He loved to write and draw cartoons, yet his first book, And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street, was rejected by 27 publishers - a lesson to aspiring authors everywhere.

We don’t celebrate Dr. Seuss in this country as they do in the US, but perhaps we should. Without him we might not have the marvellous works of Julia Donaldson, Lynley Dodd or Lauren Child. So Happy Seuss Day! By Sarah Davey

Mansfield & Pinxton Railway Exhibition An exhibition celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Mansfield & Pinxton Railway is on show from Saturday 2nd February to Saturday 2nd March at the Mansfield Museum, Leeming Street, Mansfield during normal opening times. This exhibition shows 200 years of progress and evolution on what is England’s oldest continuously running commercial railway and includes a scale model of the Kings Mill Viaduct, an original rail and a specially produced 200th anniversary rail. Just over 200 years ago discussions took place to see how Mansfield could be connected to the rapidly increasing

network of canals, to boost the town’s economy. Due to the terrain, it was decided not to extend the canal but to connect the two together with a railway. Therefore, on the 13th April 1819 the 7.5-mile Mansfield & Pinxton Railway was officially opened amidst pomp and ceremony. Coal was more easily brought into the town to fire the industrial boilers and furnaces and exports of stone, malt and sand, amongst other items, rapidly increased. Mansfield had joined the transport revolution!

Have you stopped to think! This predates steam locomotion! Those first wagons were pulled along by horses. It wasn’t until 1849 that Mansfield saw its first steam locomotive. Initially only freight was transported but from 1832 passenger travel was introduced. However, the story doesn’t stop there, because this line, although undergoing a few upgrades and adjustments, has been running continuously ever since; making it the oldest continuously running commercial railway in England!

and today, the story is almost reversed. Half of the original line has now been incorporated into the Robin Hood line, while the other half branches off toward Pinxton, still carrying a few freight trains each week. Choose A Wedding Photographer After you’ve set the date and booked your venue, your choice of photographer is probably one of the most important decisions to make about your wedding.
