Well the Olympics are almost over. Go Rebecca! To be honest I will be glad to see the end of it. Watching all that exercise and endeavour has quite worn me out. I think I will get back to watching the cricket. Our area has lots of events and places to visit, so let’s all make the most of the good weather and get out and about this summer. Choose your personal care assistant with confidence

P

eople in Nottinghamshire who need social care and support are being urged to use a directory of reliable paid workers.

Support With Confidence, which has been set up by Nottinghamshire County Council, is a web-based directory of potential employees who can help older and disabled people with things like: getting them out of bed, washed and dressed, taking them out for trips e.g. the pub or theatre, walking people’s dogs, helping out with shopping, housework or the garden.

Councillor Kevin Rostance, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “More and more people are now receiving personal budgets, which means they can manage their own social care. This is fantastic and it gives people real choice and control over which services they have and who helps them. “Support With Confidence gives people the reassurance that these carers are reliable, so we would urge anyone who is thinking of hiring a personal assistant to use this scheme.”

Everyone on the directory has received training and has been checked by the County Council.

To find out more about Support With Confidence and to use the directory phone 08449 80 80 80 or visit: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ supportwithconfidence

People who receive a personal budget* for their social care can then select who they want from the directory to provide a particular service. They will then interview that person and, if they are happy, offer them the job.

*Personal budgets are given to people who are eligible for long term social care support by the County Council. They have an assessment with a social care worker, where they decide how they wish to spend their money to best meet their needs.

Health

Why Water Works Experts tell us that we need to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, but have you ever stopped to wonder why? What happens if we don’t drink enough water? If we don’t maintain the correct water levels, our bodies will start to dehydrate. Like a car’s need for oil, if the oil level gets too low, the engine will start to run rough. If the oil runs out all together, the engine will stop running. It is the same with our body. Therefore it is easy to see why it is very important to drink eight glasses of water a day. Symptoms of mild dehydration include the following:

T

he human body is made up primarily of water. Around 85% of the brain, 80% of blood and 70% of muscle is water. Given these facts, it is easy to understand why maintaining our body’s water levels is so important. During a single day an average person loses around 2 - 4 litres of water in the following ways: urine 50%; sweating 34%; breathing 14%; and faeces 2%. In order to keep our body working at its optimum levels, this lost water needs replacing. Most of the lost water (47%) is replaced through drinks, a further 39% through food and the remaining 14% comes as a by product of metabolic activity. What does water do? Water helps remove the dangerous toxins that our body takes in from the air we breathe, the food we eat and the chemicals used in the various products we use on our skin and hair. It cushions and lubricates our joints and carries oxygen and nutrients into our cells. Water also helps regulate our body temperature and assists in digestion.

18

• Reduced alertness • Reduced concentration • Slower reaction times • Tiredness • Headaches • Feelings of nausea • Low blood pressure • Constipation • Dry skin Drinking water can help us lose weight Believe it or not, it’s true! If we are dehydrated the performance of the blood, liver and kidneys is affected, with the end result that the body can’t metabolise the fat stored in cells as effectively, so the fat remains in the body. In addition, water is a natural appetite suppressant so drinking plenty of natural water (not in tea, coffee or fizzy drinks!) will help us to feel full and not so likely to eat. So, let’s do what the experts tell us and look after our wonderful bodies by drinking plenty of water! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Lions in the Spotlight The Edwinstowe and Dukeries Lions Club were very pleased to to present Edwinstowes well renowned dance group The SPOTLIGHT STARS £ 400.00 which will help them with funding for the many events that they regularly participate in. In actual fact, it was payback for the wonderful support that the girls and their parents gave the LIONS in December, with the annual SANTA SLEIGH run, The lions really couldn’t have fulfilled our busy December schedule without them.

If you want to make a little band even more Lively or in fact help Tony control us ,why not check us out on our website www. edwinstowethedukeries.lions.org.uk FINALLY just a reminder that our annual RACE NIGHT is coming up on the 14 th of September so keep it in your diary.

So really its a big thank you and a little bribe to ensure that maybe they will help us again this year, Sorry girls no pressure ! In the picture with the Dancers is our NEW Lion President Tony Pink, who started his new Term in July. I am sure all the Lions will wish Tony the very best of luck for the next twelve months, and I think he will surely need it trying to control our lively little band.

DUKERIES U3A THE AWFUL WEATHER has not put a dampener on the activities of the U3A during July! Our numerous activities have kept everyone in good spirits – and I’m not just talking about our new group interest – wine appreciationJ. The new group has already attracted around 10 members and has an appropriate sub-title ‘Bottoms Up’, to indicate that instruction is starting from basics. Many of our activities take place indoors so we are not unduly affected by the inclement weather. Our interest groups include Scrabble, Bridge, Reading, History, Art Appreciation, Woodworking, Bell Ringing, Paper-Craft, Stitch Craft, Investments, Ten-Pin Bowling, Lunch

Outings and Theatre Visits, all of which enable us to keep a roof over our heads. For the hardier souls amongst us who prefer the outdoors, rain or no rain, we have two walking groups – the Amblers, 3 to 4 miles at a steady pace – and the Ramblers, 8 or 9 miles over more testing terrain. Other outdoor activities include our Outings and Day trips section, Gardening, Architecture, etc. August finds us celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Dukeries U3A. If you are retired or semi-retired, why not join us? We are a friendly group! We meet every third Monday of the month at the Jubilee Hall, Ollerton at 1pm. (new earlier time). News from your MP

I

Mark Spencer MP

know the summer has been a bit of a wash out so far but it seems the market for stolen lawnmowers, garden equipment and bicycles continues to thrive. I spoke recently with local police who are keen to remind everyone with a garage or garden shed to remember to undertake some basic security precautions. You may not be spending time in the garden at the moment, but all too often burglars are, so make sure to keep doors locked, valuables out of sight (particularly if you have windows in your shed) and take the time to look out for your neighbours, especially if they’re elderly. Now that we’re starting to see some sunny spells, be sure not to leave anything on the lawn or in the garden, especially overnight.

While of course, if there is criminal damage, excessive drinking, swearing or aggressive behaviour the Police have committed to act, I support the rights of our young people to socialise outdoors and would ask residents to do the same, remembering that we were all young once and that young needn’t mean badly behaved. If we are to work effectively with the Police, then local involvement is crucial and it is really important that local people give their feedback on local problems. It will also be very important that local communities vote in the upcoming elections for a Police and Crime Commissioner so I would urge you to make sure you’re registered.

This is of course holiday season, so we can also help each other by taking one another’s bins out regularly and keeping circular catalogues off of each other’s doorsteps while neighbours are on holiday. These kinds of little steps take very little time and will give the impression that houses are occupied. I have been meeting regularly with local Police to discuss the issues you’ve been raising from the community, and it is clear from local feedback and with the nights now stretching out, that anti-social behaviour is something which should, and will, be actively addressed over the coming quarter as a priority. I do however want to be careful to draw a distinction between anti social behaviour, which our young people often take the blame for, and groups of local youths socialising outdoors. It seems clear to me that there is a real need for mutual respect here, with older residents often automatically assuming that groups of young people are up to no good and seeking to have them moved on. If no damage is being done and no residents are being made to feel intimidated or threatened, then that simply isn’t fair.

Method

Preparation time: 5 minutes Cooking time: 10-15 minutes

When the sauce comes to a boil, turn the heat down and simmer: 5 minutes depending on the size of the skillet. Add capers.

Home & Garden

O

Summer Savings

h the long glorious days of August. If you’re like me, all you really want to do is stretch out on a rug in the garden with a good book, host the odd barbecue and enjoy any sunshine summer deigns to throw our way. So you might think it odd that I’m now going to ask you to turn your thoughts to winter for a few minutes. I do have your best financial interests at heart though, and in these difficult economic times, that’s got to be worth a few minutes of anyone’s time…right? The long days of summer are not just lazy for us; they are also a quiet time for lots of tradesmen. Think about it; as soon as the temperature drops in mid October, people will begin to think about cold snaps and central heating. They’ll probably arrange for their boiler to be serviced...along with everyone else. Wouldn’t it make more sense to get ahead of the game and have your boiler serviced whilst there isn’t a queue? If your boiler is more than fifteen years old it probably needs to be replaced and you may well be able to negotiate a nice discount at this time of year. While you’re at it, if you have an open fire or a solid fuel range, order fuel now, in bulk, while you can take advantage of lower summer prices. Summer is also a good time to organise a chimney sweep. There aren’t too many about and they tend to be swamped in the autumn as people think about using their fireplace again.

to improve your cavity wall and loft insulation. Most energy providers offer a free home survey and advise where you could save money. Think about it now and you’ll have plenty of time to organise improvements before the first frosts. Kerching! By Sarah Davey

Other businesses with a quiet period during the summer Summer is traditionally a quiet time for financial advisers and companies specialising in investments. Perhaps you could benefit from a financial makeover. It might sound odd, but this time of year is also quiet for train and coach travel, so you might be able to pick up a bargain ticket or two. Summer has always been a quiet time for politics, so now is a great time to tackle your MP about any local issues which are bothering you. And finally, if any of your electrical goods have seen better days, now is the best time to check out your local high street for a great deal on an upgrade.

Energy costs continue to rise week on week, so why not use this summer
