Magento Developers Make Batch Import / Export of Data Super Easy The import/export feature in Magento development is a very useful tool. This feature is one of the most important in the ecommerce space.
Magento 1.5 comes with a new core module called ImportExport that is fast. Using the import/export tool one can imports products en masse. It is easier when adding, say, fifty products all at once – create a csv or xml file with the required fields from the database and import the products. Conversely, you can retrieve a csv or xml file through export.
Export also lets you export all the products. Say, when moving a website or to reinstall/ upgrade a website.
Apart from using import to update existing products, magento developers can create new ones
The flexibility offered in the interface means it can be used to communicate with the outside world, including legacy systems, third party applications, price aggregators, external order sources, fulfillment systems, accounting, etc.
The new import/export module is faster
Import or export is a for all purposes, just a transfer between one medium and another, loading data from one resource, applying alterations / reformatting, and saving to another resource – database and local file, ftp server and database, parsed html page and Excel spreadsheet, Google Spreadsheet and catalog, and so on.
External resources can generally be one of the following:
•
Local files
•
ftp, sftp servers
•
Database tables
•
Soap services
•

Developers came together in Kiev, Ukraine, buzzing about the latest development opportunities in the world of Magento development.
MageConf 2011 was a developer event sponsored and led by Magento. Developers from throughout Ukraine – as well as from Russia, Belarus, Germany and Poland – gathered in Kiev on December 3 for the third annual MageConf. The event was well attended by Magento developers. Much of the audience consisted of PHP developers interested in learning more about Magento developments.
The attendees were treated to a variety of insightful presentations, including a standing-room-only keynote speech on Magento 2. As always, Magento swag was in huge demand (the line for Magento T-shirts seemed endless). And a recruiter for Magento developers received hundreds of applications from aspiring magento developers interested in joining the industry-leading technology team.
Testing and reviewing the new Magento ImportExport, Roman Zenner writes in his blog (http://romanzenner.com/blog/magento-1-5-import/): ‘I have only tested (it) with simple products and a standard set of attributes …, but I was able to import 1,000
products in under 4 seconds on my Macbook Pro. The question now is: How on earth can this thing be (so) fast? The answer: Magento uses less Magento to get the job
done.
Rather
than
using
the
model-structure
(in
this
case,
mainly
product_catalog), the new ImportExport module uses direct database access via Varien_Db_Adapter_Pdo_Mysql. This class is an extension of the respective class of the Zend Framework, ie. the “magic” happens deeper in the overall system.’
Magento developers can import and export essentially anything, not necessarily products alone. Order state and status can be modified from Magento backend. You can edit an address without having to create another order. This will not recalculate order amount or shipping fees, though.
Apart from using import to update existing products, a magento developer can also create new ones by specifying more details:
•
type (eg., simple)
•
attribute_set (Default or another field set name)
•
tax_class_id (None or another tax class name)
•
status (Enabled)
•
weight (required. 1 if not using the field)
•
sku (unique product identification)
•
name
•
price
