MARKETING ARE WE MISSING THE POINT?

Dr. Brian Baliwas recently gave an extremely informative webinar on how he built a following on Instagram and how it helped him build a successful dental practice in just 3 years after he graduated from dental school. With almost 30 thousand followers, he was able to quickly gain traction and substantial growth in one of the most competitive areas in the country, San Francisco, California. Now, for the sake of transparency, I have to admit that I am a Social Media phobic. Although Facebook was started in February of 2004, I only became vaguely aware of it in August 2005 when my kids used it to communicate with their high school classmates, who had all evacuated hither and yon to various schools in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. I probably should have paid more attention to how it was possible for my kids to know where their friends had gone, since the absence of phone lines was a monumental problem. But I was pre-occupied with more pressing things at the time…(like my practice that was under water). In addition, my kids convinced me that it was not something for “adults”, most probably because they didn’t want us to “eavesdrop” on their conversations. Since then, the explosion of Social Media platforms has been mindboggling. After I read the book “Crushing It” by Gary Vaynerchuck, I felt like I had been asleep for the last 15 years. He stresses that entrepreneurs no longer have the luxury of ignoring the power of online marketing, if they want to grow their businesses. So, when I met Brian about 6 months prior to his webinar presentation I decided that it might be time to take my head out of the sand and face the fact that perhaps, I could no longer ignore my need for a

much greater online presence. He helped me set up an Instagram Account. In the 6 months that followed, I diligently went trolling for followers. I added content every day, with pictures and hash tags, and some videos and stories. I commented on other peoples pages, liked everything and everyone, LOL-ed, ROFL-ed, and DM-ed. The end result of this was that I now have a whopping 215 followers which to my dismay is completely volatile and will rise and fall by 5-10 on a regular basis. Bruised ego aside, I dug in deeper. Here is what I have discovered. Early adopters had a much easier time gaining followers “organically” (without paying for them). The rules of the game are in constant flux so you could be using old data to formulate your plan, and no one is seeing your posts. Even though you could have the best content in the world, if the platform does not recognize you as an “influencer”, you might go home empty handed. But, I have faced much bigger challenges and unperturbed by this rhetoric, I have decided to change my strategy and actually go back to the basics of what helped me grow my business pre “tech” and utilize these characteristics to up my social media game.

BE AUTHENTIC

Oscar Wilde once said, “ Be yourself because everyone else is already taken”. Write with passion, share your stories, and express your unique voice. Get personal. Don’t be afraid to discuss your failures and what you learned from them. If people relate to you, they will want to get to know you.

BUILD RELATIONSHIPS

Invite your audience to engage with you. Ask them what they think about things. Make them feel like their opinions matter. Create polls to stimulate discussions within your group. Be enthusiastic when you interact.

BE NICE

While this seems obvious, it should be no surprise that a simple slip of the tongue could cause negative unwanted attention by a person who feels that they have been dismissed or slighted. There is no room for snarky retorts online. Even if you are kidding, your intentions can easily be misinterpreted. Always err on the side of courteous, kind and respectful responses. Apologize when necessary. Integrity is paramount. Don’t annoy or badmouth people.

BE GENEROUS

Respond to your followers’ needs when they ask you to like their page, or comment on a post. If someone sends you a direct message, you should respond to it readily. Keeping the lines of communication open is essential because you probably have never met many of the people you will be communicating with and it is their only link to you. If you are helpful and responsive they will want to help you as well.

BE CONSISTENT

If you are posting once a week, keep posting once a week. If you are posting once a day, keep on keeping on. If your followers expect to hear from you don’t disappoint them or they will go somewhere else. Be dependable.

USE REAL LIFE EXAMPLES

In order to be considered a true authority, case studies, before and after photos, video clips and testimonials are invaluable. Demonstrate your abilities and show case your work. Show them why they can trust you and provide them with high quality content.

BE VISIBLE

Take that stupid egg off the place where your photo should go. Dull and faceless falls flat on social media platforms. Let people associate your face with your name. Tell your story in a captivating way, with sincerity and panache. Make your profile memorable. Once you establish a presence on one platform, increase your visibility by trying another one.

Your followers want something that you have. If you have an area of expertise, do not be hesitant to give them your best stuff. They will appreciate it and you will get rewarded in the long run. Give them your time and attention.

CREATE RECIPROCITY

BE RELEVANT

The worst thing you can do is answer a question that is not being asked. Find out what your audience is looking for, what problems they are having, and create content with solutions that will have them thinking that you can read their mind. Imagine who your ideal customer might be and figure out what they want which truthfully is more important than what they need.

10 BE PATIENT Celebrate the small wins. Results like these take time and effort. You need to put the work in, and fight hard for your space. And most of all, you can never give up.

So, you might be scratching your head now saying, so “what else is new”? This is the same old common sense stuff that we learned in Kindergarten. Napoleon Hill wrote about it in his book, “Think and Grow Rich.” Dale Carnegie said it best in his book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. But, human nature has not changed and while my millennial children might think that this baby boomer is out of touch with what is current, they can think again. While today it is referred to as developing your “know, like and trust“ factor, it ‘s still rock and roll (and business as usual) to me.
