COMAG Matamata Swifts v Te Awamutu

Loaded WaiBOP Premiership - 2.45pm

A Few Kind Words

Patron Jack Poole President Dwayne Barlow Vice-President Rob Cox Treasurer Michael Candy Secretary Kerrie Cox Club Captain Chris Bedford Committee Matt Aberhart Alistair Basalaj Pete Challis Junior Convenor Ronan Costello

Hello everyone and welcome to the Domain for our penultimate home game of 2018. For someone who played a lot of games for both today’s teams this is a pretty decent way to (nearly) end the season. Te Awamutu, like ourselves, are on a decent run so I expect today’s match will be a good watch. Both teams will be confident and, hopefully, in more of a risk taking mood than maybe they would have been a month or so ago. There’s really not much more to play for today than the joy of football and, of course, another three points. So welcome to Joe and your team, but also best of luck to Scott and his. The Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies head to Cambridge tomorrow to play Northern United in the Waikato Plate final, with kick-off at 11am. If you can make it across then I’d encourage you to do so as the team deserves all the support they can get. There’s nothing like the incentive of playing for silverware near the end of a long season to put in a performance so I’m sure they’ll do well. Our final Loaded WaiBOP Premiership game is against Otumoetai in a fortnight. We’ll be hosting a double header that day as Papamoa have asked to use the Domain for their home game against Wanderers. That should be a fun way to end our campaign. With the end of the season looming we’re heading towards Prizegiving and Summer 5-a-side. Dates and details for these are on page 5 but, in short, Junior Prizegiving is on Sunday September 16, Senior Prizegiving is on Saturday September 22 and 5-a-side starts on Thursday October 4 (with registration opening on September 1). As for today, please have fun, enjoy the match, and I’ll see you on the sideline. Dwayne Barlow, Club Mouthpiece

Advantage Taupo as Papamoa stumble The Loaded WaiBOP Premiership’s title race took an unexpected twist on Saturday as Taupo capitalised on a Papamoa slip up to move clear at the top of the table. Taupo had what looked like a relatively straight forward task, a match at secondbottom Mercury Tokoroa, and they duly dispatched their nearest league rivals 3-1 at Strathmore Park to keep their good run going. Anything other than a comfortable Taupo victory would have been a major shock and, while the margin was probably a bit closer than expected, serial goal scorer Fin Smith’s hat trick ensured there would be no misstep from the Lakesiders. Jevan Eady scored a consolation goal for the strugglers but that was as good as it was probably ever going to get for Tokoroa. At this stage of the season it’s all about results rather than victory margins for the title contenders. That was never more obvious than Saturday on evening as both Papamoa and Tauranga Boys’ College lost, which allowed Taupo to move two points clear at the top of the table. Papamoa was level at half time in their match at fifth placed Melville United, but a second half red card to Dave Molloy assisted the Hamiltonians in lifting three vital points out of their visitor’s pockets. Sok Ven, Hamish Utteridge and Josh Nooijen did the goal scoring damage for Melville who, even though they’re well out of title contention, were obviously keen to have a say in the Premiership trophy’s ultimate summer destination.

Fellow Hamiltonians, Waikato Unicol, all but finished Tauranga Boys’ season, and kept their own top three hopes alive, with a 2-1 win at Southey Field. Tom Wright and Reuben Henderson goals helped secure the narrow win for an enterprising Unicol side that may well end up cursing several inexplicable stumbles during the season for their second consecutive failure to mount a sustained title challenge. Mid-table sides Comag Matamata Swifts, Te Awamutu and Otumoetai all picked up wins to remove any faint, lingering worries of relegation. Goals from Jamie Baxter, Brayden Lissington, Chris Walker and Mike Smith gave the Swifts a closer than expected 4-2 win over pointless Hamilton Wanderers, while a Steffan Foulkes second half goal was the difference for Te Awamutu as they snuck past West Hamilton 1-0 at home. Otumoetai scored all their goals in the first half as they beat local rivals Tauranga Blue Rovers 4-1 at Pemberton Park. Nicholas Barnes struck twice for Otumoetai, and was joined on the score sheet by Benjamin Jackson and Sam Flatt. Thomas Crane scored the game’s only second half goal, a consolation one for Rovers. The WaiBOP Championship’s last match of the season ended in anti-climax as Cambridge defaulted their final home game against champions Ngaruawahia to ensure they narrowly avoided the wooden spoon.
