A MESSAGE FROM FROM

MILVERTON REYNOLDS MANAGING DIRECTOR

In 2016, the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) launched the Innovation Grant from New Ideas to Entrepreneurship (IGNITE) programme with the aim of providing support to micro, small enterprises (MSEs) to achieve the following objectives: • Grow MSEs along the business lifecycle; • Enhance economic returns in terms of level of investment, revenue, employment and export. • Improve MSEs business capacity, business processes and sophistication; and • Increase in the number of start-ups surviving past two years of creation. This was to be achieved through supporting Jamaican micro and small businesses with innovative business projects to access grant funding to develop a prototype or facilitate commercialisation. Under the IGNITE Pilot Programme, startup businesses were provided with grant funding ranging from J$1 million and $4 million. To date, having conducted two cohorts of the programme, we have positively impacted fifty (50) MSEs through investments by the DBJ totaling J$152 million, the resulting factors of the programme are as follows:

DESCRIPTION

COHORT I

COHORT II

No. of participants

27 MSEs

23 MSEs

Revenue earned by beneficiaries (local & export)

J$118.3 million

J$788.92 million

Loans accessed through DBJ & AFIs

J$171.9 million

J$36.64 million

Investments facilitated

J$344.8 million

J$199.78 million

These figures are a clear signal that the programme is a success and that the Bank’s original objectives continue to be achieved. Although a DBJ initiative, we cannot take all the credit. This phenomenal success could not have been achieved without the commitment and dedication of a group of Business Service Intermediaries (BSIs) who continue to partner with us to deliver this programme. And so, we at the DBJ would like to record our sincere thanks to: BCOEC BRANSON CENTRE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP - CARIBBEAN

The process of selecting IGNITE beneficiaries was intense, applicants had to go through an evaluation process that included a pitch session explaining why they should be selected, presentation of their business model detailing their sales and marketing strategies, financial projections, the investment being asked. The selected beneficiaries were supported by their BSI from application through to project implementation over a period of 18 months. They were obligated to meet all the milestones set and agreed on at the start of the programme. Now, at the culmination of Cohort II’s successful implementation of some 23 projects, and we are pleased that they have achieved this growth in their business lifecycle. As we look to the launch of IGNITE III, we are pleased to announce that based on the positive impact of the programme over these past two Cohorts, we have been able to attract additional funding from our international partners – the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB),

T H E D E V E LO P M E N T B A N K O F J A M A I C A

through the Boosting Innovation and Entrepreneurship (BIGEE) Programme. Through this additional funding from the IDB, we are now able to increase the value of the grants for the Seed Stage from $2.5M to $3M and early stage from $4M to $7M as well as to increase the number of beneficiaries expected to benefit in Cohort III. The project implementation period will also be reduced from 18 to 12 months. We congratulate today’s batch of IGNITE beneficiaries, simultaneously urging all Jamaican MSEs to take advantage of the IGNITE grant to grow and scale their businesses by contacting any one of our BSI partners and applying online via our website at www.thinkbigee.com. We at the DBJ continue to live by our mission of facilitating economic growth and development for all Jamaicans. MILVERTON REYNOLDS

BRANSON CENTRE FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP CARIBBEAN Branson Centre is pleased to work alongside our partners, the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) on the IGNITE programme. COVID-19 has presented new dilemmas to Caribbean businesses. Many have had to scale back operations, and entrepreneurs still face difficult decisions regarding layoffs and reduction in salaries. With the struggles entrepreneurs face given the pandemic, an injection of funds was just what our entrepreneurs needed to survive during this unprecedented period.

started her hair care line under Gwen-Estelle Naturals and later applied for the IGNITE grant to sustain her product; her passion, perseverance, and marketing strategies enabled her to have all her products on display at Fontana Pharmacies island-wide. Joelle Smith, a graduate of our 2019 cohort, was also able to launch the Kingston Creative Hub - resource centre and co-working space located in the heart of Downtown Kingston that helps creative entrepreneurs grow their business.

This year we supported 7 entrepreneurs, which since the launch of the IGNITE, is the most in our portfolio. Some success stories include Its Pixel Perfect (IPP) who used its funds and launched its virtual Chat Box called The COVID Chat Box on Facebook. Jodi-Ann Whittingham is another entrepreneur who has done well in this programme. She

The success the fund has achieved is a testament to the effectiveness of monitored and tranched grant funding. Working with DBJ perfectly aligns with our shift to recovery management so that they could be better equipped to withstand rapid operational change.

JAMAICA MANUFACTURERS AND EXPORTERS ASSOCIATION The Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) is delighted to be a capacity development partner of the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ) as they continue to facilitate funding and growth of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sectors within Jamaica. MSME’s remain a vital part in the socio-economic framework of Jamaica, contributing significantly to wealth creation and nation-building. We have a duty to ensure that all the right alliances are made, and programmes put in place to enable the continued growth of the sector. The 2019 Global Competitiveness Report ranks Jamaica at number 83 and 33 respectively in the areas of Innovation Capability and Business Dynamism, this shows our potential to become a remarkable force in business and productivity. This will require consistent, dedicated, and relevant work to propel Jamaica even further in those rankings. We have seen where programmes such as

the DBJ’s IGNITE Innovation Grant has been extremely beneficial to our members allowing them to strengthen their entrepreneurial muscle and the quality of their products/processes. The aim is to ensure that we continue to actively champion the development of Brand Jamaica and an essential component of this is nurturing the potential of our MSMEs. The JMEA remains committed to this mission and will continue to offer our support through mentorship, advocacy, and other areas within our purview that will help to make an impact. We commend the DBJ on completing yet another successful chapter of the IGNITE Grant Programme. TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION CENTRE – UTECH Universities A Fertile Ground For Innovations With support from the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ in February 2020 the Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) conducted face to face survey on Innovation at the University of Technology Jamaica with approximately 1,100 students which is approximately 10 per cent of the student population at the University of Technology Jamaica. A key result from the survey showed that 49 per cent of students indicated that they have an innovation that can be commercialized. This is great news, but it is also a challenge for the TIC to translate this potential to reality in guiding these students to ensure that their innovations are market, technically, operationally and financially feasible. The TIC is ready to take on this challenge and has already started to leverage other units within the University of Technology to support our efforts which will impact our economy positively. One such program which assisted was

the IGNITE programme. Our participation in the program grew our capacity to deliver grant management services. Our knowledge of the developmental needs of start-ups grew. SISTERS’ INK JAMAICA LIMITED Today’s world is fraught with issues that might be difficult to solve, but demand solutions. It has become evident that we cannot solve these issues with the thinking of the past. SO HOW DO WE SOLVE?

Innovation through entrepreneurship. If we are to transform, stimulate and grow the Jamaican economy we must do so with specialized knowledge coupled with creative and synthetic imagination. Specialized knowledge gives us the insight and the know-how but it is through our imagination that our thoughts are converted to ideas and further transformed into innovative solutions. Entrepreneurship is then the critical vehicle to facilitate this process as entrepreneurs are now in demand to demonstrate the futuristic and critical thinking, commitment, sense of passion and purpose needed to produce imaginative and effective solutions for our daily challenges. This requires a mindset shift towards the pooling of our resources, collaboratively working towards solutions to guarantee the ability for us to scale and become a force to be reckoned with in the international markets.

Sisters’ Ink participation in the IGNITE II programmet has been rewarding. It was our pleasure to work with innovative entrepreneurs committed to finding these creative solutions. IGNITE II has facilitated much needed investments to well deserving recipients who have grown significantly throughout the programme. The MSEs accessed much needed business and technical support that empowered them to make business decisions that positioned them for success.

Sisters’ Ink remains committed to nation building through our support of MSEs. We leave an indelible mark through consultations, workshops and developing the tools necessary to transform businesses into strong, sustainable and profitable forces.

BSI: Branson Centre for Entrepreneurship Caribbean Project: Launch Kingston Creative Coworking Hub IGNITE Award: J$4M

The Kingston Creative Hub is a joint venture between The Hub Coworking (led by Joelle Smith) & Kingston Creative (led by Andrea Dempster Chung). The brand new Coworking Space located at 107 Harbour Street above the iconic Swiss Stores, is undoubtedly the most vibrant building on the block; bordered by Water lane, a must visit for art enthusiasts due to its mural lined brick roads. Jamaica has been long known for its culture and creative spirit. The partnership sought to develop a Hub for our local creatives to converge, create, collaborate, and grow their ] businesses; as part of a multibillion- dollar global orange economy. The over 2000 square foot space boasts a 20 seater meeting room which doubles as a photography studio, a podcast room, backdrops, lighting and audio equipment for rent, open hot desk seating and 6 offices. We were intentional about onboarding our office candidates, which include an Attorney-atlaw (Jermaine Reid), a business development coach and venture

capital entity (Graft Ventures) and a digital marketing firm ( Digital Disruption Agency). A Human Resource entity, Content creation company and Accounting firm will also be joining our office community within a month. Each office member will be integrated into our accelerator programme, which further enhances collaboration within the community. Opening our doors during a pandemic in 2020 was a challenging task, but the support of the Development Bank of Jamaica through The Ignite Programme, The Branson Centre and The Tourism Enhancement Fund; allowed us to build-out the facilities and welcome our creative entrepreneurs. Some of our notable features have been on BET and NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Series via singer and rising star Sevana, as well as numerous music videos and podcasts. We have already brought so much value to the creative industry and shared economy in such a short time.

Thank you to all our partners, and importantly, our community of creatives who continue to give this venture purpose. Instagram & Twitter : @kingstoncreativehub | Phone : 876-546-6943 | www.hubcoworkingja.com

Omari O’Connor BSI: Jamaica Business Development Corporation Project: JALGAE IGNITE Award: J$2.5M

Jalgae Spirulina, the “superfood”, is grown in Jamaica by budding entrepreneur Omari O’Connor, who started the business to boost a healthier Jamaica. He is the recipient of the 2019 Ignite Grant from the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ). Jalgae is an aquaculture farm which aims to produce fresh, cost effective spirulina products of the highest quality in Jamaica. Spirulina is popularly referred to as a “superfood” because of its high nutrient priorities due to its richness in antioxidant, minerals, fatty acids, vitamins, and protein. Research has shown that it supports a strong immune system, healthy memory functions, increases energy and vitality. The Jalgae Spirulina product line includes spirulina powder, spirulina capsules and fresh spirulina paste. O’Connor was influenced by numerous factors including

popular song “Spirulina” by Reggae artiste Chronixx and The European Union Young Blue Entrepreneur (YBE) training that he completed in 2014. Upon intense research, he found that there is a market demand for spirulina products due to the increasing number of health-conscious individuals in the country. The project was initially funded by family, then after numerous consultations with entrepreneurs and advisors in his network, he was successful in attaining the Ignite Grant from DBJ in 2019. The grant totalled the sum of 2.5 Million Jamaican Dollars and was issued to further his prototype, and product development which has brought the company closer to full commercialization . Jalgae Spirulina is expected to be on the shelves of local health food stores and pharmacies sometime in 2021.

TCP Tings makes Jamaican Greeting Cards, Gift Tags, Handheld Fans and ‘One Bag Ah Tings’ Tote Bags - that capture Jamaican culture with creative twists, humour and first world designs. We believe Jamaicans deserve the option to buy high quality, creative, local products that truly reflect our culture – with first world designs. Jamaicans love to say ‘you’re walking around with One Bag Ah Tings’ when you have a lot of things – so we decided to turn ‘One Bag Ah Tings’ into a physical bag. Our handheld fans are the ‘hottest way to cool down in Jamaica’, with clean fan designs featuring Jamaican slangs. The TCP Tings Founding Team is made up of Kia Williams, Chief Creative Officer (CCO); Jordan Moses, Chief Operations Officer (COO) and Marc Gayle, Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

We used the grant to fund growth -- specifically to invest in inventory and marketing. We hired a marketing agency in the US that worked with us to build out some of our digital marketing infrastructure. We learned a lot from that engagement and we were able to grow both sales and our social media following that we are still leveraging today. One side effect of the grant is that we were forced to set up an advisory board which served us well and helped us capitalize on expansion possibilities. One key piece of advice from one of our advisors was to capitalize on our existing relationship with Fontana to secure prime real estate in their new flagship Waterloo location. We did that to great effect and it has served us well. We have an entire TCP Tings dedicated section on the 2nd floor of Fontana Waterloo. They are now our highest volume & most profitable retail location. So overall, the Ignite programme (both the funds & the discipline of going through the process) have been beneficial to us.
