we live united “Why United Way?” Although there’s an immense amount of work that goes on behind the scenes 365 days a year, the answer to that question is quite simple.

Experience: United Way of the Greater Dayton Area carefully tends a local network of the best health and human service solutions available, something Gary W. Auman 2010 Board Chair

we’ve done for 97 years. This cultivation includes monitoring local needs, identifying the most effective programs, and giving these programs consistent support as they help our neighbors build a better life for themselves and their families, which in turn means a better community for us all.

Teamwork: No single organization can solve tough human challenges alone. United Way brings the best and brightest minds together to find solutions. Then we pool our strengths and resources to put things in motion.

Flexibility: When changing conditions reveal a new challenge for our community, these valued partnerships—and new ones—make it possible to Pamela Morris 2011 Board Chair

respond more quickly than any single organization could do on its own. Whether it means moving dollars, mobilizing volunteers, or setting a new course altogether, consider it done.

This combination of experience, teamwork, and flexibility allows United Way to address the priority needs of our community at any given time. So when you donate your dollars or time, your investment generates results for everyone who lives and works in Montgomery, Greene, and Preble Counties. Thank you for choosing to LIVE UNITED. It truly makes all the difference.

and partnering to advance the common good.

United Way of the Greater Dayton Area

1974 United Way

History: Nearly 100 years ago, our community united in the spirit of compassion and care to raise money for relief efforts following the Great Dayton Flood. Based on the success of such efforts, civic leaders decided to apply the same concept of collaborative

fundraising to meet the ongoing health and human service needs of the community. Thus, the Federation of Charity and Philanthropy was organized in 1914—under the auspices of the Greater Dayton Association (which we now know as the Dayton Chamber of Commerce)—with ten cooperating agencies including Boy Scouts, Humane Society, and Salvation Army. In 1919, the organization became the Dayton Community Chest and was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1920. Its stated purpose was, “to foster the moral, mental and physical welfare of the community to seek to harmonize the efforts of civic, charitable and philanthropic organizations for the sake of civic unity and greater efficiency.” The name was changed to the United Fund of the Dayton Area in 1965, and the United Way name was adopted in 1974.   Now known as United Way of the Greater Dayton Area, the organization collaborates with community partners to best serve the health and human service needs of citizens in Montgomery, Greene, and Preble Counties.

United Way works to meet people’s basic needs while giving them the skills necessary to be financially stable. We partner with businesses, local government, and agencies to connect members of our community with services such as job retraining, foreclosure prevention, and emergency food and shelter, to help set them on the path toward financial independence. When we build a trained and reliable workforce, we keep and attract businesses, improving the financial conditions for our entire community.

Health Health impacts every aspect of daily life. A child living in a violent home is unable to concentrate in school. Families can be overwhelmed by decisions

Our Board United Way of the Greater Dayton Area relies on the expertise, leadership, and generosity of time and talents that our Board members bring to our organization. We sincerely thank them for their contributions over the past year.

Our Generous Supporters: The Leadership Circle United Way’s Tocqueville Society was formed in 1984—with Dayton joining in 1986—to deepen individual understanding of, commitment to, and support of United Way’s work: advancing the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for all. The Tocqueville Society recognizes local philanthropic leaders and volunteer champions who have devoted time, talent, and funds to create long-lasting changes to not only stabilize, but strengthen our community for generations to come. Membership in the Tocqueville Society is granted to individuals who contribute at least $10,000 to our annual campaign. We thank these local members of the 2010-2011 Society for their generosity.

In Memory of a Leader United Way of the Greater Dayton mourns the loss of a great community leader and philanthropist. Chauncey Dean was a true community benefactor whose impact left a substantial imprint among many nonprofit entities in the Dayton region. United Way is grateful for his longtime support as a member of the Tocqueville Society and his legacy commitment to our mission will continue in perpetuity.

10+ YEARS OF LOYAL CONTRIBUTORS We would also like to recognize and thank those donors who have kindly given to United Way for 10-24 years. Please see the names of these committed supporters on our website www.LiveUnitedDayton.org/loyal. In the pre-computer age, United Way did not receive the names of our donors. Companies collected the pledges and passed them on to United Way as one combined gift. Since we do not have records of individual giving reaching back more than 10 years, we ask loyal contributors to please make us aware of your wonderful history of generosity. If you feel your name should be on this list, please let us know by calling 937-225-3023.

Employee and Corporate Giving The headlines were bleak. The outlook concerning, at best. Under such trying economic conditions, how could a nonprofit succeed in fundraising efforts? But, succeed we did. In fact, for the first time in many years, we exceeded our previous year’s campaign total. Raising just over $8.5 million allowed us to maintain allocation levels to our partner agencies and meet operating expenses without the need for reserves. We certainly couldn’t have achieved this without the generosity of each and every one of our donors. On the following pages, we acknowledge the corporate gifts and employee contributions which helped us “do the impossible”. Thank you.

“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.” Walter Elias Disney
