Coach Morris has more than 10 years experience, including most recently three seasons as the recruiting and defensive coordinator at the University of South Alabama (USA). In 2018, the Jaguars defense ranked 16th nationally. Prior to his time at USA, Coach Morris had stops at the College of Southern Idaho, University of Louisiana Lafayette and the University of Alabama.
Excitement and energy surround the program since Coach Morris’ hire. During the first three months under his leadership, the Falcons secured one of the top junior college recruiting classes in the country and achieved the program’s highest ever GPA (3.5) during the summer term.
Coach Morris added, “Daytona State is special and has exponential potential on a national scale because of the people in our community. When we wear Daytona across our uniform, we are representing the people of this region. We want to give back to the community and make our area stronger through community support.”
Community service and academics are extremely strong pillars of Coach Morris’ program. The Falcons not only look to build on their record-setting academic success but also to be heavily involved in the community. The team has already volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club of Volusia County, DeLand Chamber of Commerce, and the Daytona Beach Community Second Harvest Food Bank, with much more planned.
Coach Morris is cautiously optimistic about the coming season. “One of the challenges in life is cutting the clutter and focusing on things that can be controlled,” he noted. “Expectations and accolades are nice. They bring a lot of positive value to Daytona State College, but as a team and as individuals, we can’t worry about the standards set by others for this team. Our story will be written when it is over. If we focus on daily tasks and processes, we will reach our maximum potential, whatever that may be.”
The Falcons are considered one of the favorites to compete for the NJCAA national championship. It would be the first national title in the history of the DSC Men’s Basketball program and the first trip to the national tournament in over 20 years.
