FROM THE DIRECTOR Summer’s already winding down, and we’re looking ahead to fall and the return of our popular Oktoberfest celebration. Oktoberfest is our largest single event of the year and also the museum’s largest annual fundraiser – last year it brought nearly 24,000 guests to the museum grounds and generated record-breaking revenue of more than $630,000! It’s not only a wonderful community event, but also vitally important to everything we do throughout the year. Oktoberfest comes on the heels of this year’s Art Ball, which was the most successful in the event’s long history! Thank you to Art Ball Chairs Tamera Geesling and Thomas Roehrig, along with our fantastic Associate Board.
Thank you once again to the legislative delegation from the Miami Valley region, whose bipartisan support and advocacy were instrumental in helping secure this funding. Our summer special exhibition, Dayton Celebrates Glass, is entering its final weeks and has been enthusiastically received by the community. If you haven’t seen it yet, I encourage you to do so soon; it runs through September 28. Keep in mind that the exhibition’s final weekend is also Oktoberfest weekend. Kudos to Dr. Aimee Marcereau DeGalan and the entire curatorial team for organizing another fantastic exhibition. We’re all eagerly anticipating our Fall exhibition, Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Culture, 1920-1945. This traveling exhibition is the first held outside Tokyo dedicated to Japanese Art Deco and features a breathtaking selection of works from the world’s premier collection of Japanese art in the Deco style. See the feature in this issue for all the details, and be sure to also check out the sneak preview of what’s coming in 2015 – we think you’ll like what you see! Thank you for your continued support as members of The Dayton Art Institute. We look forward to seeing you at your museum throughout the coming months and into the holiday season. Best regards,
As we announced in the previous Member Magazine, the recent State Capital Appropriations Bill signed by Ohio Governor John Kasich included nearly $2.2M to help fund extensive renovation projects at the museum. Preparatory work and design studies are underway, and we’ll be reporting on progress in the coming months. Our building requires work in several key areas: HVAC systems; ingress and egress points; and support systems for technology that will make it accessible and relevant to the next generation. Capital improvements will be able to address deferred maintenance, and energy efficiency measures will be completed. These changes will help the museum continue to draw audiences that will support economic vitality and a high quality of life in our region.
