DAY BY DAY by Susan Day

Social Media, Or, Parents Running Defense

A

h, our addictions. And you know what I mean. Sometimes we just can’t help ourselves. You settle down into your couch after a long day of work and are ready, eager, to scroll through your social media feeds. Suddenly an hour or two breezes by. What is this, a black hole? Um, yes. Every swipe, click, nudge, wink and share carries a responsibility with it when you’re scrolling. If you’re closing your eyes to press “send,” what are you really doing? Provoking an argument? Taking a stand? Proving your worth? And what about your kids? Are they closing their eyes and hitting “share”? And are lots of afternoons and weekends continuing on in this way? If that answer is yes, then maybe it’s time to ask ourselves, is this the way life should be experienced? Is this what I want my kids to know about life? Articles abound about anonymous bullying and more happening on social media. These scary stories pull back the curtain on social media’s downside, but they don’t stop anyone from logging on. Politicians may try to bring legislation to curb social media for kids, but lobbyists continue to shut that effort down. Platforms keep you scrolling, liking and sharing willy nilly — and they know they’re designed to keep you doing it. It’s an unfair advantage. For most teens and plenty of kids under age 13 (even though platforms say you have to be 13 to have an account, kids figure out a way), their main way of communicating is through Snapchat, TiKTok, Instagram and more. It’s exhausting for concerned — although possibly even clueless — parents. At least now we’re hearing about celebrities who social media for kids, too. Matthew McConaughey and his wife have three kids, the oldest age 15. They are only now beginning to monitor social media with him ... sitting with him ... talking him through. At least that’s what they claim. Jennifer Garner (who says she banned her three kids from social media altogether) told Today.com: “I just said to my kids, ‘Show me the articles that prove that social media is good for teenagers, and then we’ll have the conversation; find the scientific evidence and we’ll chat!’” So it’s touch and go for us all. Ban phones altogether and your kids become isolated. Ban social media until their 16 or older and they may freak out when they are finally allowed to have it. What to do? Clearly, it’s each household to its own. One good kid at a time. My son’s little girl (yes, I have a first grandchild!) is barely 11 months old, but she’s drawn to our phones like a magnate. Will her parents be able to keep devices from her? I know they want to as long as possible. But nothing and I mean nothing mesmerizes her more than a cell phone. If I was raising a toddler today, I’d wait until she was in eighth grade to give her a phone ... I think. And then slowly, ever so slowly, we would proceed ... together. Eventually I’d write down all of her passwords. And I’d monitor like crazy because inside that phone is the wild, wild west and a lot of unchartered territory. And nobody needs to be in that wide open, untamed region of life without defense. The only defense would be me.

FEED BACK QUESTION: “I can hardly get my son’s attention when he’s on his phone, so I have to ask: how do other parents manage their kids’ phone usage? It’s out of control at our house!”

Managing Kid Phones PARENTS SHARE THOUGHTS “My son’s phone usage is dependent on his grades & behavior. If your behavior is good and your grades have been good through the week, I allow him an hour to be on there, after homework & chores. On the weekend, if one or no behavior marks during the week, I allow six hours throughout the day for each day on the weekend. For two behavior marks that are not serious, I allow three hours. No hours for three or more. It works well as a disciplinary measure.” Nikki Drake “Family Link app.” Beki Redden “You can tell them no ...”

Hannah Baker “Take the phone; you own the phone. You paid for the phone, you pay the bill, and the phone is in your name. We set times for it to turn off and have to approve apps.” Tanya Bricco-McQuillan “Don’t let them have one until they can work and get one themselves! CAMP QUIZ! Where Sports? Arts? STEM? Good, old

W

hen you were a kid, life may have been simpler. You may have just hung around the house during the summer and played with neighborhood friends or maybe you attended a local day camp near your home. Fast forward. Today there are camps for everything you can imagine. It can be confusing — even stressful — trying to find the right camp for your kid. Sometimes it’s important to choose different camps for each of your kids based on their individual interests. Finding the best camp is essential for your child’s comfort and growth. Camps offer kids experiences and tools to go out into the world to discover who they are and what they want to become. And a kid can only truly grow when they’re given the freedom and chance to gain confidence by exploring new ideas and activities, and eventually finding their passion. If you know your child could benefit from a summer camp experience this summer, don’t wait, camps fill up quickly beginning this month. There are camps for every interest and budget. Does your child want to try archery? No problem. Do you have a kid who loves horses? Done. STEAM-focused kid? There’s a camp for them. According to the American Camp Association (ACA), “Camp provides children with a community of caring adults who nurture experiential education that results in self-respect and appreciation for human value.” For years, says the ACA, campers’ parents have reported that when their kids return home from camp they are more caring, understand the importance of giving, are more equipped to stand up for what they know is right, and are willing to be more responsible. Know that camp stays vary from a few days, a week, a month or an entire summer. Determining what your child is ready for matters. INVOLVE YOUR CHILD One of the most important aspects of choosing a camp is to involve your child in the decision-making process. Allowing them a voice will help ease any anxiety they may have about camp.

Tally up the answers and match your child to the type of camp below:

PERFORMING ARTS CAMPS Specialty art and musical theater camps focus specifically on the arts. Some may offer a variety of art forms to choose from, such as pottery, woodworking, painting and photography. Others focus solely on one type of art, such as sewing camp or band camp. Musical theater camps are quite popular and typically showcase a production after a few weeks of rehearsals. Art camps come in all lengths and locations. You can sign your

nashvilleparent.com

child up for a one-week-long art camp at your local recreational center or find multiweek overnight art camps where they can truly hone their craft.

SPORTS CAMPS Sports camps usually consist of one or multiple sports that a child plays throughout the day. The main goal is for participants to improve their skills by focusing extensively on a sport they love. Depending on where you live, you can find all types of sports camps like tennis, golf, soccer, baseball, lacrosse or gymnastics. It is also a way for your child to try a new sport or something only offered during the summer, such as surfing and sailing.

SCIENCE/TECH CAMPS If your child loves to code, build and tinker, then a tech camp may be the right fit. These types of camps make learning about science and technology fun and exciting for kids. They also provide an opportunity for kids to dive deeper into a subject they love, such as working on a science experiment, designing a website or programming a robot. You can find science and tech camps through local businesses, colleges and museums.

TRADITIONAL CAMPS Traditional camps are what you think of when you envision summer camp — canoeing, hiking, archery, relay races, swim lessons and crafts. If your child enjoys exploring and experiencing new things and has not yet found one specific activity that they are passionate about, then a traditional camp is a wonderful choice. They are very common and can be found all over. Some are day camps, while others are overnight experiences where your kids can also learn more independence skills. Overnight camps also offer a more rustic, outdoorsy experience with campouts, cabins, campfires and activities on the lake. Sandi Schwartz is an award-winning freelance journalist.

TEACH KIDS HOW TO BE GOAL-SETTERS Ace that test, earn that starting spot, make the things that you want happen. It’s all about setting and achieving reasonable goals.

A

lot of people try to set New Year’s resolution each year, but by the time February roles around, many of them fall apart. Everybody’s at the gym on Jan. 2; classes are empty come the spring. So what’s the point? Well, it’s actually that a resolution — or a goal — is a target we give ourselves to achieve something we really, really want. Such as losing weight. Or getting a promotion at work. Or for a kid, getting a better grade in a class. When we achieve our goals we feel good about ourselves — it’s worth it to talk about goals with kids. When kids set and achieve personal goals, it can affect the way they view themselves, their academics and their activities, now and in the future. But goal-setting doesn’t just happen. It’s an acquired skill that needs guidance, support and encouragement. But once learned, goal-

setting can help a kid find purpose and even help to turn dreams into reality. Taylor Moody is a prime example. Ever since her mother can remember, Taylor has entertained others, and made it clear that she wants to become a professional singer. “By the time Taylor was in fifth grade she had gotten a lot of positive feedback with different performances so by the year’s end she was ready to step it up a notch,” says Taylor’s mom. “We decided a good next step toward a life in music was to enroll her in a performing arts school so she could major in voice and minor in theater.” Setting goals for kids is one of the best ways for them to increase self motivation and it starts by defining, setting and prioritizing goals to help your kid accomplish what they want to do. “If a child owns his goal, he’s more likely to embrace it and have the motivation and commitment to work toward attaining it,” says Frank McIntosh, a former president of a Junior Achievement. “It’s OK for parents to give input and guidance, but it needs to be driven by the child,” he adds. This was the case with Dave Resler’s daughter, Stephanie. From the time she was in fourth grade, Stephanie had run short distances in track. Upon entering high school, she joined cross country and increased her distance from one-quarter to over three miles. But her biggest running goal came at the end of her freshman year. “One day Stephanie came to me and said she wanted to join the 300Mile Club at school that summer,” says Dave. “I knew it was a realistic goal, so together we sat down and did the math; how often she would have to run over the course of three months.” “When kids formulate a goal, it’s a good idea for them to write it down,” says Linda Sullivan, a 4-H organizational leader. “This creates a clear picture in their minds of what they want to achieve, gives permanency to the goal and provides the drive and motivation to move forward,” she adds. In writing down goals, kids can outline steps that

10 SMALL WORDS IMPACT THE FUTURE: “If it is to be, it is up to me” need to take along the way to achieving them. “Breaking down a large goal into specific steps helps kids experience smaller goals along the way,” says McIntosh. “For some, this may mean taking advantage of resources such as the Internet to broaden their understanding. And never underestimate the power of third-party influences — someone who knows the ropes and can encourage your child or provide the expertise needed to fine-tune his skills.” “One thing Stephanie and I discussed was how she was going to get her miles in when it was 95 degrees outside in the summer,” Resler says. “I told her that she needed to know and plan for times when it will be difficult to run. We also talked about her progress along the way,” he adds. So when summer rolled around, Stephanie was a little behind. She increased her weekly distances. And by August she had officially run 300 miles.” Experts agree the best thing parents can do to help their children set and achieve goals is to guide them in understanding what their strengths are, help them create a feasible plan and then become their cheerleader. But ultimately attaining the goal is up to them. “One time I gave a commencement address and I challenged students to internalize 10 small words that could dramatically affect their future,” says McIntosh. “‘If it is to be, it is up to me.’” Mcintosh continues. “When a kid has a clearly defined a goal and understands the steps needed to accomplish it, it is much easier to actually take the steps necessary to attain the goal; when it comes to acting and taking the steps, you already did the thinking behind it, so it is that much easier to act.”

HELP KIDS SET AND ACHIEVE GOALS: • Start early. Provide structure for goal setting by having your child save for a special toy, work toward a specific grade in school or master a song on the piano. • Make sure the goal is child-directed and realistic. You can give input, but it needs to be the child’s idea for him to truly embrace it. • Write it down. Make sure it’s clear and sensible. Have kids include why it’s important to them. Hang it in their bedroom, on the refrigerator or the bathroom mirror so they can see it. • Outline specific steps to attaining the goal. Break it down into smaller steps or goals so they will feel a sense of accomplishment. • Take advantage of resources. Utilize the Internet, lessons and third-party influences to help your child increase his understanding and hone his skills. • Consider hurdles in advance. If your kid knows there will be road bumps along the way, it can ward off discouragement. Remind your child that obstacles are opportunities to strengthen resolve. • Set a time frame for attaining the goal. Have your child write down an approximate deadline for achieving the goal to provide a sense of urgency and keep him on track. • Chart the progress. This can be done with pictures, medals, report cards, etc. • Readjust time frame, if necessary. Remind your child that there may be unforeseen circumstances that keep from attaining his goal in the allotted time. Encourage him to readjust the time frame. • Be his cheerleader. Provide support and encouragement. Take an interest in his goal, attend his activities and look for other ways to support your child without taking charge of the goal. • Be a mentor. Talk about your own personal goals — the trials you faced in trying to achieve them. Demonstrate perseverance and discipline, and continue to set personal goals for yourself.

Getting Started With Goals tart simply with your child. Help to brainstorm one goal that they would like to achieve this year and make sure it’s specific, measurable and trackable. A goal like, “I’ll pay more attention in class this year” is too vague. After landing on a reasonable goal, be sure kids write down why their goal may be important to them. Kids can keep a journal (such as the one shown here) or just an everyday notebook. They can also make signs to hang for themselves. Make it fun and keep it light!

RESPONSIVE PARENTING Want to be more consistent with discipline and more this year? Kindness and firmness can go hand-in-hand, experts say. by Janey Snyderman

A

ccording to a recent survey from the University of Michigan related to parenting, about half of moms and onethird of dads surveyed (2,044 parents with kids under the age of 18) have resolutions this year related to their parenting. Many (47 percent) say they want to be more consistent with discipline. Seventy-eight percent say they will strive to be more patient. How about you? And how can you make your parenting dreams come true?

24 february 2024

The latest buzzword — a parenting technique that may help — is here, says Mona Delahooke, a child psychologist and author of the national bestseller, Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids (Harper; 2022). It’s responsive parenting. And it’s about being emotionally present for your kids. The hype around parenting styles has switched from, “what does my child need at this moment” to a mix of structure and empathy, Delahooke says.

You can discipline your child and set firm boundaries, while also acknowledging how they are feeling. “Kindness and firmness are not oil and water,” Delahooke says. “They can go together.”

RESPONSIVE PARENTING REDUX Responsive parenting isn’t new, it has simply evolved. Also referred to as gentle parenting (although not exactly the same), responsive parenting plays a major role in your child’s development of cognitive and social skills, Delahooke says. It focuses on empathy and respect and doing away with punishment and yelling. When parenting is responsive, Delahooke says, it flexes to the underlying needs of the child and builds resilience, helping the child to self-regulate. The difference between gentle parenting and responsive parenting is clear: it’s firmer (many think gentle parenting coddles children), and it takes your child’s emotions and growing sense of self into consideration. A growing body of research shows the strong association between your parenting style and your child’s cognitive development. In responsive parenting, the parent recognizes their child’s emotional and physical needs and reacts to them appropriately A responsive parent is attuned to their child’s emotions and reacts to their cues promptly in ways that are supportive and developmentally appropriate. and consistently. It can begin when your child is a baby. According to the World Health Organization, “Maternal responsiveness in early childhood is associated with social competence and fewer behavioral problems at 3 years old; increased intelligent quotient (IQ) and cognitive growth at 4-and-a-half years; school achievement at 7 years and fewer behavioral and emotional problems at age 12.” Research also shows that appropriate responsiveness develops 1. TOP 8 RESPONSIVE PARENTING TIPS

A CALM HOME Want to have a home that’s peaceful with little yelling and arguing? Responsive parenting keeps your home quiet because it’s not reactive. “Ignoring a request from a child generally doesn’t have a positive outcome,” says O’Brien. “The frustration builds on both sides and is likely to explode. While it may feel more difficult to respond to your child’s needs right away, once responsiveness is established, your home will be a calmer, happier place,” she adds. Becoming a responsive parent is actually quite simple, Delahooke says. Responsive parents are attuned to their child’s emotions and react to their cues promptly in ways that are supportive and developmentally appropriate. It works best to establish it with babies and young children since with older children responsive parenting will require more work. The sidebar provides examples of how to use responsiveness at home with your kids.

t’s not easy having a lot to do while tending to your child’s every emotion, too. But typical children don’t defy parents on purpose; challenging behaviors are a physiological response to stress. Responsive parenting helps to alleviate stress for you and your children.

150 Soccer Way, Smyrna

615-223-0451 lancasterchristianacademy.org

A Conversation with Lancaster Christian What has helped Lancaster grow over the course of 25 years?

We are a small community of Christian educators who believe in the relational approach to education. Our primary ingredient in the recipe for success is relationship. Faculty, parents, and students have partnered together to create a wonderfully diversified product to serve families in Rutherford county.

What makes LCA unique?

While the vehicle we drive is education, our primary focus is helping kids of all ages build an authentic, genuine relationship with the Lord. A majority of Christian schools are comprised of wonderful believers who champion making education the best it can be. And, while that is a worthwhile investment of time and energy, I can think of no better investment than to disciple kids in their journey with the Lord. Simultaneously, we have students who excel academically and attend prestigious colleges and universities across the nation. In essence, we are a youth ministry with a foundation of excellent education and a bunch of incredible educators who really love kids and the Lord.

Why is LCA a phenomenal choice for parents looking for Christian Private Schools?

There is no greater desire in a parent than for them to feel as if their child is being seen and cared for in the same way that they would be cared for at home. Our team of educators, a majority of whom have their own children in our school, look to develop the whole child educationally, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and socially. Every child is seen. Every child has heard. Every child has a name. We believe that there is an assault on the innocence of young children, and we work hard to protect childhood innocence and provide a very safe environment for learning to take place.

What is LCA’s vision for its students?

Lancaster Christian Academy’s mission is to make Jesus famous in the lives of our students by building intentional, Christ-centered relationships and fostering a safe environment where Biblical standards of living are celebrated and meaningful learning takes place. While we certainly supersede and rank above the state educationally, our school blends the need for academic, social, emotional, mental, and spiritual development. Our program intentionally seeks out opportunities for students to grow holistically and we find greater success in the realm of academics when students are thriving in all aspects of their development.

What type of student thrives at LCA?

Students who are looking to explore and grow in their faith in an environment that champions this type of growth really thrive. Students who need extra time to learn and enjoy, interactive, hands-on learning really succeed at our Academy.

What is LCA’s outlook for the next 25 years?

We are not looking to build a massive empire. Our growth strategy is founded on meaningful learning and spiritual development. We seek to enhance our academic programs, build spiritual emphasis, expand our athletic programs without compromising the foundational values with which the Academy was founded.

How has LCA evolved and advanced in the last 25 years?

Lancaster Christian Academy began in a small white house on Maple Drive in Smyrna having only a vision for 10 kids. The Lord saw fit for expansion and growth in ways we would’ve never imagined. We currently represent 750 families across three campuses from babies through 12th grade. We offer a dynamic arts program, championship winning sports program, excellent academic program, and leadership development.

Have there been any changes since Keith and Sherry Lancaster passed the school over to Kevin and Shari O’dea?

Keith and Sherry Lancaster retired in 2013 and turned the helm of operations over to Kevin and Shari O’dea. Keith and Sherry founded the school and secured the property and building that is currently on 150 Soccer Way including the building of a multiuse gymnasium/auditorium. Mr. O’dea came on board in 2004 as a Principal organizing and administrating the school to achieve a full accreditation status in the state of Tennessee. Over the last decade, Mr. and Mrs. O’dea have created multiple discipleship programs, streamlined administrative processes, created model classroom strategies that are observed from other private schools across the state, and have developed the best faculty and staff in Tennessee. Mr. O’dea was invited to be on the board of directors of the Tennessee Association of Nonpublic Schools in 2016 and travels the state evaluating nearly 100 private schools each year. Lancaster Christian Academy has become a flagship school for the association and is often called upon for organizational ideas, classroom strategies, and training implementation. The campus of Lancaster Christian Academy has expanded into three locations under Mr. O’dea’s leadership. We have opened a campus in Murfreesboro representing nearly 230 students. Currently, Mr. O’dea chairs a leadership board comprised of 15 well educated individuals who manage the day-to-day operations and affairs of the school and the early learning centers. He is also actively developing discipleship programs for parents who are raising teens in a culture that does not support biblical principles and standards of living. Mr. O’dea is the Lead Pastor of Springhouse Church in Smyrna and enjoys his free time with his wife and four beautiful girls- all who attend LCA.
