have a framed quote that a friend gave me when I had my fourth child. From time to time I’ve pondered it because I keep it near my closet mirror: “Children are not things to be molded, but are people to be unfolded.” What does that mean? It means to let your child be who and what he is and not who and what YOU want him to be. Sometimes soccer fields worry me. Do ALL of the kids hoofing it out to the fields with water jugs every Saturday tell their parents they want to play soccer when they’re 4? Or do their parents choose? You know the answer to that. We take the kids where WE want to take them, right? And certainly when they are little, we decide it’s time for an activity. We choose for them and do it based upon the things WE love. If I love baseball, then it’s natural to sign my child up for T-ball, but ... About 20 years ago, an obesity epidemic struck and parents everywhere started signing up kids for not one sport, but two. Physical education got cut back in school, and sports everywhere got a huge boost. Fast forward to today and an abundance of kids are playing travel sports year round. Travel baseball players play 80+ games each summer. Oh yes, back when it sounded, parents heard the message loudly and clearly that if a child has too much free time on his hands he’ll likely get into trouble, i.e. drugs, alcohol, the wrong crowd. So that led to overscheduling kids and running ragged driving them all over the place every afternoon and weekend. There’s hardly any time left for that “dangerous” endeavor known as dreaming. Free time is spent on devices now. Go to any public place and heads are down on cell phones everywhere. You even see little kids with iPads out to dinner lest they should be ... BORED. Haven’t we busy parents had enough? Isn’t it about time for a different trend to set in? Here’s one that I would really love to see happen: the trend for kids to do less, to dream more and to be given the freedom to follow their desires. We can all step back and breathe. Unfolding your child means to watch and listen, not ignore and block out, or insist that ice hockey (for instance) is the only sport worth playing because that’s what YOU played. It means there is someone here before you who has a chance to be who he was created to be if you will only get out of the way. Over-parenting is a no-no now. Letting a child choose for himself because he has a genuine interest in something is a yes-yes. Keep this in mind as you look at your kids. Keep it in mind as you drive those hard after-school hours heading here, there and everywhere. It doesn’t have to be this way. And you might even get to really know your child.

couple of years ago, local author Sarah Curry Rathel tugged at the heartstrings of many with her book
There’s Something Different About My Hair, an ode to how our differences can bring us together. Now, she’s currently working on a new adventure, the Smile Books Project — a non-profit organization creating personalized books and coloring books featuring children with life-threatening medical conditions as the main characters. Working with author/ illustrator Robert Kelly and Blue River Printing, the duo creates fun stories that detail a child’s own heroic tale. The process is pretty simple. A referral is made on the website, families are contacted to set up interviews either at home or at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater

NATURE PLAY: SO KIDS CAN BE KIDS! By Barbara Littner David
Kids can explore the tot-sized flatboat and log cabin at Behringer-Crawford Museum.
C
ole ran up the gangplank, turned to smile, and opened the door of the flatboat. He entered the boat, tugged on its ropes, and climbed onto the bench in its covered quarters. Then, he ran off the boat, and did it all again. Not yet 2 years old, Cole didn’t absorb the historical significance of the flatboat’s role in settling our region, but he had fun. The flatboat is just one part of NaturePlay@ BCM, an innovative, nature-oriented play space that opened in June just behind the Behringer-Crawford Museum (BCM) in Devou Park. This new Covington, Kentucky, attraction is open dawn to dusk, and provides free parking and free admission. Rebekah Gensler, president of the Devou Good Project, which coordinated with BCM on NaturePlay@BCM, explains the aim of the new development: “Children have lots of structured play and educational time, and NaturePlay@BCM is intended to be a space for letting kids be kids — running, jumping, climbing, swinging, using their imaginations, having quiet moments to look and observe, read a book, dig in the dirt.” We had very few quiet moments at NaturePlay@BCM, but we enjoyed the active play it offered. Fully enclosed, handicappedaccessible, and stroller friendly, the paved pathways easily accommodated the somewhat

Of course, Cole was out of the stroller for most of our adventure, playing in the one-room log cabins, peeking through their windows, and running through a garden tunnel where he stopped to admire the flowers. When he needed a rest and a snack, we had no trouble finding benches beneath shady trees, and he especially liked the kidsized table and chairs that appeared to be shaped from logs. Climbing on the chairs, ladders, and rocks kept Cole busy and happy. There’s even a replica trilobite, an extinct fossil arthropod, that kids can climb. However, Cole seemed too little to zip on the cruise-line swing, and sadly, the ladder for the slide had caution tape wrapped around it, just one of the signs that NaturePlay@BCM is still new and building. Signs around the park ask visitors to respect the “young plants” and various taped-off garden boxes and pits promised more exciting developments. In the future, visitors will find a “Kentucky cave” crawling space, a changeable pioneer garden with native fruits, vegetables and herbs, and SAPS (Science and Art Packs). In the fall, parents and caregivers will be able to check out these packs, which will include cards to help identify insects and plants, magnifiers, binoculars, journals, pencils, activity sheets and other such items. The SAPS will be available, for a fee, at

the front desk of the Behringer-Crawford Museum, another great place to visit. A street car bursts through the entrance, and the transportation theme continues throughout the four floors. On the first floor, Cole loved pushing the buttons to bring Cincinnati and Covington landmarks to life in the glassenclosed trains display. Upstairs he had more fun with cars, train, boats and bridges as we relaxed in a convertible at a drive-in and watched a film loop from the 1950s, detailing rotary phones, atomic cars of the future, and family meals prepared by Mom and Sister. Upstairs a model of the Roebling Bridge looms above a steamboat with buttons that play a calliope and steamboat whistles. So, to help keep that love of learning alive, the Cincinnati Family Enrichment Center (CFEC) offers Playful Learning for ages 3 - 5. The class is an alternative to preschool that includes outdoor play, stations time where kids can choose their own activities (with a little guidance, of course), and ends with music and yoga. RAISING AN ORIGINAL KID Highly creative children come from parents who place values above rules. By Susan Day
If
you want to raise an original kid you have to teach him to think for himself. “I was fortunate enough to have parents who let me explore what I wanted to do from an early age,” says Roderick Justice, producing artistic director at The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati. “It helped that my parents were creative and musical. I role-played a lot. I grew up in a rural area, so I didn’t have school friends coming over everyday and I had to use my imagination ... and boy did I have a wild imagination,” he adds. Comments like Justice’s reveal what it takes to bring up a creative child (necessary for the arts and a highly valued attribute in board rooms across America). With parenting trends still funneling children into athletics first, the idea of “original” is often swept aside — often until it’s too late. Meanwhile, kids must follow the rules at school, do what they’re told and essentially “fall in” which often runs counter to listening to your own drum. You can build an original thinker at home, though. “I firmly believe childhood role-playing is integral to creative development,” says Justice. “Once you nurture the child’s imagination, you will more likely get a more creative adolescent,” he adds. Mind you, originality does not have to go
hand in hand with rebelliousness. Kids do need guidelines for living ... just not an over abundance of it. “I think one of the biggest mistakes that a lot of parents and teachers make is spending their time enforcing rules. The sad thing about rules is they don’t teach kids to think for themselves,” says Adam Grant, author of the book Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World. So what should parents be teaching? “Values,” Grant says. “Parents might say, ‘We take joy in our work — what kind of jobs sound fun to you?’ And when a child shows interest and enthusiasm toward something, to support that even if it’s different from what you want them to do.” “Listen!” says Justice. “When a child expresses even the tiniest bit of passion for something, listen. Refrain from instinctively saying, ‘No,’ and focus instead on asking thought-provoking questions about the new passion,” he adds. But this doesn’t mean you have to let your child run wild. “Total openness is a misconception in developing creativity,” says John Morris Russell, conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. “You do need some tools and some loving guidance to open doors,” he adds. “At the heart of all childhood creativity is

‘classic role-playing,’” says Justice. “A stick can be a sword, a wand, a cane. When the child begins to role-play, play along! If they do not include you, let them play and do not interrupt the process. Children have good instincts, so do not allow the child to sense if you feel role-playing is silly or foolish,” he says. When psychologist/author Benjamin Bloom (Developing Talent in Young People) led a study on the early roots of successful artists, he learned that their parents weren’t drill sergeants. Instead, they responded to the intrinsic motivations of their children. When the kids showed an interest for a skill, the parents supported it. Creativity and originality take time to nurture and are all too easy to stifle. In Bloom’s study, it was revealed that the highly creative kids came from homes where less than one rule was the norm. The parents of ordinary children had an average of six rules. Food for thought.

The O’Keefe Music Foundation Talent? Sure. Hard work? Definitely, according to Aaron O’Keefe, founder of the O’Keefe Music Foundation, which offers kids ages 5 - 18 the chance to experience the process of professional recording, all for free or at a very
low rate. In a nutshell, a group of students work together on a challenging song. With the help of volunteers and donations, the students record and film themselves performing the song in a professional studio. “It’s really a team effort,” says O’Keefe, explaining that recordings are a major commitment for the kids and their parents, as well as a reward for the kids’ hard work. The entire process — finding the right song, learning the various parts and rehearsing — teaches discipline, hard work and perseverance. With 18 projects in the works currently, the

One of this year’s recipients of an ArtWorks mural is the Kennedy Heights Art Center, a home for artists of all kinds and ages. Born out of a community effort to save the historic building from demolition, the center is a resource for art appreciation and creation. “We offer an array of different opportunities,” says Dominique Springs, events and marketing manager. Classes cover drawing and photography and camps touch on fashion, animation, musical instruments and even Spanish rhythm. The Center also displays artwork from professional artists which are inspirational to kids.

“We have some kids who come every week,” Springs says of the camps,” and that tells us that we are doing something right!” She points out that the center lets participants take a break from their techfilled lives. “I don’t really see kids on their phones at the center,” she says. That’s because their hands are busy with chalk, crayons, paint and other tools. Best of all, the center’s programs are offered at affordable prices, Springs says. ArtWorks Make Art. Get Paid. That’s the slogan for ArtWorks’ popular mural program, which began as a challenge from former Mayor Mallory to create a mural in each of the city’s 52 neighborhoods. The program connects aspiring teen apprentices with professional artists who design and construct the murals that decorate the city. “Kids get shot down when they say they want to be an artist,” says Rachel Rothstein, communications manager. “We’re letting them know they can get paid for their talent, and that’s a remarkable thing.” Interested teens from all over the city apply in January and those who are selected participate in conversations about a proposed mural — what the community receiving the mural wants, and how the mural will reflect that neighborhood’s qualities and personality. Additionally, some teens become part of the Hero Design Company project, in which they work with kids facing hardship to create superhero capes. “We’re known for our murals,” says Rothstein, “but we do more.” With the city serving as ArtWork’s gallery, the beautiful murals do double duty: encourageing people to walk more or to take advantage of one of ArtWorks’ Saturday mural tours to learn the stories behind each display and the kids who were a part of it. “We want people to appreciate art, but we also want to empower youth artists to have a role in that appreciation,” says Rothstein. Happen, Inc. Calling Happen, Inc. an “arts program” might be a bit of a misnomer. The many activities that take place at the Northside facility are really more like a “creative process program,” according to founder Tommy Rueff. “We try to teach that everyone is born with creativity and that can be in anything — math, science, even how you deal with your little brother or sister,” he says. It’s that kind of open-ended encouragement that has made the non-profit organization a positive force in Cincinnati. Happen, Inc. was designed to bring families and communities together through creative activities, according to Rueff, where parents and kids work together on projects that create memories to share as they grow. Classes led by characters like Cowboy Value are designed to keep parents just as engaged as children with two levels of humor going on. Classes incorporate more than art, too. A clay class will include Native American traditions, info on early cooking and more. “There’s a wide range of content to be a part of,” says Rueff. “Art, science, nature, math, we offer tons of activities in different areas, and teach the subject matter in creative ways.” cincinnatifamilymagazine.com • nkyfamily.com
Activities are available for all ages. There’s the Kids Film Critics group, a Teen Hall, and new programs on the horizon include ballet for toddlers. Biz Kids (think Shark Tank, but nicer), and Happen Teen Loans, help teens find support as they hunt for after-school jobs. Flower Garden Grill-Outs — typically on Sundays — bring people in the community out and many families learn about Happen, Inc. when they travel to offer outreach activities to other area organizations. “Our theme is that community is not just where you live, it’s how you live with other people,” says Rueff. “Following that has opened the door to volunteers and community engagement.” And it’s all about the creative process. “We try to teach kids that creativity is your superpower — no one can take it away from you,” he says. “We try to encourage that creative process, and everyone can be empowered by that.” Learn more at happeninc.com.

MOM REPORT: Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum By Tina Pratt After a very busy weekend, we needed some down time and Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum looked like a perfect place to relax. We started off with a visit to the visitor’s center to pay for our admission for the day. We were greeted by a very friendly cat (which we learned later is named Pyramid!) that my kiddos immediately fell in love with. While they played with Pyramid, I got a ton of great information from an employee. I learned that you can rent an art cart to tour the grounds and that they offer a Summer Series for Kids ages 5 - 12. I also learned that they have a free app called Otocast; it allows you to see images of the sculptures and hear audio from or about the artists. We had our map, the app on my phone, a blanket and were ready to go! My kids ran around on the grass and admired the sculptures near the visitors’ center. They found one that they really liked, so we opened up the blanket in the shade that it provided. I gave my kiddos each a packet of clay that I brought with us. They squished, pulled and molded the clay to create their own sculptures. While they were busy being sculptors, I played the audio from the app to learn more about the pieces. “Where Every Family Matters.”
After a while, we decided it was time to load up in my car and drive to see the rest of the art. We slowly followed the Gallery Loop signs to see more of the sculptures. I was thankful for the signs which insured I didn’t get lost or drive circles around the 300+ acres. We stopped and got back out of my car at the Overlook Patio. It was AMAZING! My son quickly climbed up on a rock to take in the view. He was QUIET. Yes, QUIET, for a few minutes before he said, “This place is so peaceful and quiet. Look how pretty, Mom!” My daughter and I joined him up on the rock and just sat listening to the birds, feeling the breeze on our face, and looking at the park. We sat until their tummies began to rumble. Unfortunately, I didn’t pack lunches, so this was my cue it was time to head out. Next time I am packing a picnic to eat up at Overlook Point. We had an absolutely beautiful and much-needed relaxing time together at Pyramid Hill. We look forward to going back again soon.
