COWLEIAN TIMES

#5

FANTASTIC LETTER RECEIVED The following letter was sent to Cowley’s Principal, Mr Sheeran, regarding a Year 9 Cowley student, Joe Spencer. We found the letter so wonderful and worthy of being read by all, that we decided to make it our headline news item for Newletter #5. Well done Joe!

ITN VISIT COWLEY TO REPORT ON HEALTHY EATING Ahead of the Government’s new childhood obesity strategy, ITN News paid a visit to Cowley to film a news story on healthy eating in schools. ITN journalist Reshma Rumsey questioned Mr Sheeran on the noticeable health and behavioural improvements in school as a result of the policy that takeaways cannot open within a certain distance of a school. Year 11 students then shared their views on the importance of a healthy diet. Mr Sheeran said: “It’s always nice to share good practice, but when ITN News comes to town; our healthy eating in schools messages could potentially reach millions of people nationwide – which is astonishing.” “It isn’t easy being interviewed in front of camera, so I’d like to congratulate the students involved on a job well done.”

In September 2015, the Royal Horticultural Society teamed up with the UK Space Agency to send 2kg of rocket seeds to the International Space Station with British astronaut Tim Peake. The package returned to Earth at the beginning of March and the seeds were distributed to around 10,000 secondary and primary schools, including Cowley, as part of a national experiment to study the effects of space on the growth of plants.

In April, Cowley’s Year 8 students planted a blue packet of seeds and a red packet of seeds, but they don’t know which one has been to space. The students will now spend just over a month recording growth on a wall chart to see if zero gravity does affect plant growth and development. Once the experiment has ended, students will go online and report the data collected. Once the numbers have been crunched the results will be published in September 2016. Scientists hope that by collecting such a large data sample they will be able to further understand how factors such as zero gravity and the lack of microorganisms in the soil, air and water affect plant growth and development. That will, in turn, help them identify which crops will be the best to grow in a “space garden”, providing a sustainable source of food for astronauts and, by transforming carbon dioxide into oxygen, even air for Martian explorers to breathe.

ATTENDANCE SURGERY Good attendance to school is a necessity, not only to enable progress to be made towards targets, not just academic targets, but because you, as parents, have a legal obligation to ensure your child attends school regularly. We do understand that this is not always that simple and we would like to help. Every Monday, there will be an ‘Attendance Surgery’ held in school between 4.00pm and 6.00pm. No appointment necessary; just come along and have a chat to someone who understands and is here to help. We look forward to being able to support you during a potentially tough time as a parent.

Congratulations to Year 11 student, Faye Harrison, who has been selected to play for Lancs U16 in Hockey. Faye has already represented at county level, as Captain, and led her team to victory in a tense Hockey match against Cumbria.

This year has seen the number of applications and appointments of Student Leaders rocket. A total of 42 Year 10 students now help staff at break and lunch time with responsible duties such as helping younger students and maintaining an orderly environment. A Student Leader is the first step to becoming a Cowley Prefect in Year 11.

Cowley’s Year 8 Charity Group raised £631.51 for the Honey Rose Foundation earlier this year by bag packing at a local supermarket. The founder of the Honey Rose Foundation, Lynn Duffy MBE, recently visited Cowley to receive the cheque and students got the opportunity to view an MBE medal and to hear about Lynn’s visit to Buckingham Palace to meet Prince Charles.

Four students from Cowley took part in the challenge and they are: Year 8 Tyler Duberry Joseph Gilford Year 9 Ryan Smith Matthew Griffiths VERY WELL DONE!
