PALABRAS DEL DIRECTOR This will be a new space where we will publish articles that are related to teachers' and students' experiences which are not necessarily academic and that are enriching and significant and worthwhile remembering. The students' Bulletin will be published on a semester basis, and we hope that eventually it will be student run but is under the direction of Ricardo Fumachi in this early stage. This first edition deals with activities that took place in the first semester 2012 written in enjoyable narrative style and which reflects student learning at Davy College, as they participate in many activities such as Mother's Day, Flag Day, the CAS program, STUCO and its democratic functions, the return of HOUSES competitions, our successful international leaders' workshop, and our Community Service Program which undoubtedly changes the lives of those who are involved. Como cada año, el Davy College celebra el Día de la Bandera Peruana conmemorando la lucha sucedida el 7 de Junio de 1880 en Arica, donde miles de peruanos lucharon sin cesar en defensa de nuestro símbolo Patrio. Rememoramos el acto heroico de Alfonso Ugarte, quien se lanzará por el Morro de Arica evitando así que nuestra Bandera cayese en manos del ejercito chileno, y de Francisco Bolognesi quien a pesar de saber la desventaja bélica existente entre nuestra armada y la chilena decidió seguir en la lucha por una cuestión de honor y de defensa de la soberanía peruana. Nuestros estudiantes de primaria y secundaria, p a d re s d e f a m i l i a , p e r s o n a l d o c e n t e y administrativo disfrutaron de una mañana llena de marcialidad, color y orgullo por nuestro símbolo patrio. Presenciamos un pasacalle de nuestros alumnos de primaria miembros de la comunidad internacional que enriquecen la diversidad de
nuestro centro educativo, nuestros alumnos de grado 6 que nos deleitaron con una impecable presentación en homenaje a nuestra Bandera, la campeona regional de Marinera Norteña nos engalanó con su baile y la marcialidad de la escolta del colegio integrada por alumnos de grado 10 y 11 que se impuso con orden y disciplina en la Asamblea. Es así como el Davy College sigue fortaleciendo su visión nacional e internacional, con compromiso por el trabajo en conjunto de seguir forjando un país que progresa y que apuesta por la Paz.

EXPERIENCIA CAS: ALEJANDRA ZEBALLOS Fue nuestro primer día para empezar nuestro proyecto en el “Hogar Santa Dorotea”, cuando llegamos los niños nos recibieron muy cariñosos, mi compañero y yo les explicamos, que les íbamos a hacer un horario para que lo peguen en la pared y para que recuerden lo que tienen que hacer, en cada actividad pegamos imágenes para que entiendan mejor. Fuimos a un cuarto para avanzar rápido y poder concluir bien el trabajo, nuestra mayor dificultad fue lograr que los demás niños no nos sigan porque en esa actividad no podíamos trabajar con ellos, yo tenía mucha pena cuando les decíamos que ya íbamos en un rato y hacerlos entender fue muy difícil pero logramos que nos hicieran caso después de unos cuantos minutos. Luego, para empezar le tuvimos que pedir a una de las hermanas encargadas que nos diga lo que hacen todos los días de la semana normalmente, para ponerlo en su horario, y con el borrador en mano nos pusimos a trabajar; como mi compañero
es muy bueno dibujando entonces él empezó haciendo los dibujos mientras yo organizaba el horario, porque yo soy muy buena organizando actividades. Mi compañero se tuvo que retirar un poco antes porque se enfermó y me quedé trabajando hasta poder terminarlo o por lo menos casi terminarlo. Me quede un rato más pero no pude concluir, entonces le avisé a la monjita que nos supervisaba que a la siguiente clase lo concluiría y empezaríamos la siguiente actividad. Finalmente a la hora de irme me encontré a todos los niños en el jardín y me despedí haciendo el movimiento de adiós con la mano, los niños todavía no me conocían lo suficiente, me miraban un poco raro algunos sí levantaban la mano pero otros eran muy tímidos. CAS EXPERIENCE: KIANDRA SÁNCHEZ Today was my first day as a teacher. We arrived at “Nuestra Señora de La Merced” school and while I was in the taxi going there ,I was so nervous. I thought the little children were going to hate me or they wouldn’t understand anything I say, and a thousand difficulties started going around my head. Finally, I arrived to “La Merced” The children in my class (second grade “C”) came a little late because they were in the second floor, so I lost about 15 or 20 minutes of my class ☹. Well. I introduced myself and rapidly notice how restless these children w e r e . Ke e p i n g them in silent, seated and without fighting (especially that) was a challenge I could overcome with a ball. I showed them a ball and told them that if they were all sitting still we would play a ball game outside. The excited children ran immediately to their places and remained silent for 1 minute; so we went outside to play. The game consisted of passing the ball in a circle and when I said “stop!” the child with the ball had to say “My name is” .. and his name (before starting the game I had to explain that phrase). The game went well but the recess began and everyone went to have their snacks At recess we had a quick meeting with Mr. Martin Miranda. He gave us some recommendations. The advice that most helped me was that when a child misbehaves I have to change my tone of voice to a more serious one look directly to the eyes of the misbehaving child and tell him to calm down, then continue the class normally.
At the end of the break I had prepared a quick explanation on the board on the question “What is your name” and the answer: “My name is” ... and explain them to the kids better. At that moment I found it convenient to establish the rules of the class so that children knew what to do, or what not to do. I decided to let them put the rules of the class on the paper (they told me and I wrote them), I was really surprised because in the end they came out with 10 rules. After establishing the rules, the children started behaving better. The rules of the class really helped everyone including my s e l f , b e c a u s e then we could all follow those rules and create an order in the classroom. After finishing with the rules I gave them a worksheet of, "My name is" and han them color the figure that was there. By the time I finished this activity it was the end of the class and I had to go. I said goodbye and left. In the taxi back to school I thought about how nervous I was at first, The truth was that my first day was not as difficult as I thought, but it was a challenge because the children were very rude and ignored me. But after establishing the classroom rules I manage the class better and their bad attitudes. Also I thought I have to be patient, learn to speak with the children but in a manner i don’t hurt their feelings or maybe in a manner to be more sympathetic with them in order to motivate them to learn. ¿Qué significa COES? Esa pregunta me la hice apenas escuché esa palabra por primera vez. Cuando llegué al Davy el año pasado (2011). Ahora que ya sé cuál es el significado, puedo hablar acerca de él. El COES es el Consejo Estudiantil de un colegio; está compuesto por 4 representantes, los cuales son los mismos estudiantes del colegio y consta de: Presidente, Vicepresidente ( Rafaella Parodi), Secretaria/o (Rubí Calderón) y Tesorero/a (Adrian Huamán); además, tenemos diferentes representantes en cada salón (los Vocales) y dos Asesores que son ( Ricardo Fumachi y Martin Miranda ) ellos nos ayudan, con ideas claras, a planificar y organizar todas las actividades. En mi caso, yo ocupo el rol de Presidente To d o s n o s o t r o s s o m o s l o s representantes del alumnado y tenemos a nuestro cargo la tarea de organizar diferentes actividades en el colegio, durante todo el año; por ejemplo: Fiesta de Pascua, Movie Night, Talent Shows , Halloween y otras. Estas actividades tienen como principio recaudar fondos para el colegio y además motivar la integración entre los alumnos. Todos se preguntaran, a dónde van todos los fondos que recaudamos en estas actividades. Principalmente todo va para las necesidades de los estudiantes (cosas materiales o actividades) y por otro lado, también va como solidaridad (escuelas o personas con bajos económicos).
Cada uno de ellos se va llevando a c a b o c o n l a ay u d a d e c a d a integrante. Por ejemplo hasta ahora hemos desarrollado actividades como Pascua y Movie Night, que fueron planificadas con anticipación por nuestro equipo, para lograr que sean exitosas. Al principio nos sentíamos nerviosos, deseábamos saber si estábamos haciéndolo correctamente, nuestro deseo era lograr que todos los alumnos se sientan satisfechos de la organización; poco a poco nos dimos cuenta que nuestro trabajo tenía buenos resultados, gracias a que las cosas se logran con esfuerzo, dedicación y el apoyo de todos. Estamos convencidos que estas actividades incentivan, a todos los que tengan una iniciativa y deseen participar con nuevas ideas, a desarrollar rasgos de liderazgo; así como, a trabajar en equipo y en forma ordenada. En nuestro caso optamos que , para un mejor desenvolvimiento, los 4 miembros del COES, debemos asumir un rol diferente que nos ayuda a distribuir el trabajo entre todos.
Ser parte del COES me enseña a escuchar opiniones de los demás, a tomar decisiones en equipo y saber lo que es liderar (motivar a la gente a participar). STUCO EXPERIENCE It began the first year I arrived to Davy. I had no clue what a Student Council was because we didn’t have that in my other school. When they were going to choose the representative from my class in sixth grade no one raised his hand so I said: Why not? I thought of it as an opportunity to be involved in the school activities and help. The Student Council is in charge of organizing and creating activities like Easter, Movie Nights, Talent Shows, and others. The money we raised from these activities is not to be wasted, it is used to organize new activities and to improve them. This money, besides being used in the Leadership Workshop, will be either given to charity or used to improve something the students need at Davy. This year I’m part of STUCO 2012, but not as a delegate, I’m the vice-president of the Student Council. The members of the board are: Lorena, the president, Adrian, the treasurer, Rubí, the secretary and me. We get to decide and organize the activities that will take pace this year, with the help of Mr. Ricardo Fumachi and Mr. Martin Miranda. This activities are not chosen randomly, we need to take consideration the budget we are given, the time we are going to need, the people that will come and to make sure that everyone enjoys themselves. This is not at easy as it sounds, at all. First of all, we have so many ideas that we think will be activities that everyone will enjoy and that will help us to integrate as a school, and can’t be performed because of the schedule’s tight time we have and the priority of our activities. Then we need to distribute the members of the council to be in charge of several tasks in the activity and there are times when we don’t have enough people. We also need to organize these events carefully, in order to make sure that everyone gets to participate, from primary to High School, and we are not always able to accomplish this. Besides we have to think of ways to improve last year’s activities, we need to learn from the mistakes in either security, organization or content. As expected, being in the Student Council is not simple. It consumes a lot of my time. Although we don’t always have meetings or events; when we do, I have to be focused on them and support the other members anyway I can. Before I was a member of the board, I didn’t understand why the STUCO wouldn’t organize more activities or they would hurry us to get everything done. But now, I see that all the work that needs to be done to make this activity a hit is not a piece of cake. I also think that it is not fair or good when people blame the Student Council when an activity isn’t as good as they thought it would be. It is not the STUCO’s fault, not entirely, when an event goes wrong because it is the responsibility of all of us as students to contribute with our school. Some people might think that all this work is only the responsibility of the board, the teachers and the delegates, but what they don’t realize is that we are not there to give orders and do things the way we want them to be, the Student Council is there to listen to the students´opinions, their thoughts, their complains and whatever they have to say because they help us to improve the projects. I personally think it is good to be part of the STUCO because I get be part of most of the activities during the year, I´m able to help and give my opinion. Being vice-president of the Student Council has also helped me to be more organized with my own stuff and time. It has also taught me the importance of listening to other people and to work as a team when we all have the same goal. Rafaella Parodi Vice-president STUCO 2012 Grade 9 “C”
THE OLYMPICS RETURN Dear students, It is my pleasure to announce that the Houses competition is a reality once again, after several years of cancelation. The main purpose of such activities is to get all students involved in a friendly competitive environment, where each individual is part of a group. Weather academic, artistic or athletic, it is an opportunity for all community members to improve school spirit, appreciation and respect towards others. The inauguration of this year competition was a complete success. The creativity of each individual house, the colors, the choreography, during the presentations, added to what promises to be a very exciting and healthy competition. Sincerely, Maximilian Petcu
Este año, después de ser tan pedidas y demandadas, volvieron las Olimpiadas o los “Houses”, en la inauguración el sábado 21 de Abril. No sólo fueron muy divertidas y emocionantes también muy originales, ya que los houses fueron divididos no sólo por colores, también por continentes. Como África (verde), Europa (azul), América (rojo) y Asia (amarillo), que fue algo que creo ningún otro colegio haya ideado. Con no mucho tiempo de preparación, cada house tuvo que hacer una presentación de su continente. Todas las presentaciones fueron muy buenas, y nos mostraron un pedacito de cada continente. Como parte de las porristas de mi house, la presentación que tuvimos que preparar fue lo que más nos motivo este día. No sólo hicimos una coreografía en cuatro días encerradas en una casa o en el salón (casi acampamos el último día), también hicimos nuevas amistades y nos unimos a pesar de las diferentes edades y personalidades, y creo que trabajamos mucho y nos divertimos tanto, que una vez realizada la presentación no nos importó que nuestra presentación fuera la mejor o la más llamativa, que fuera con nuestro mayor esfuerzo y que la disfrutáramos nosotras. Y creo que de eso tratan los houses, esforzarse al máximo, y no sólo por ganar, por diversión y por ser parte de una familia unida con un mismo objetivo.
El deporte con el que se iniciaron estas olimpiadas fue fútbol, en el que jugó la categoría C (grados 9 – 12). Los resultados de este fueron muy balanceados, ya que en damas ganaron África (contra Europa) y América (contra Asia) y en varones ganaron Europa (contra América) y Asia (contra África). En conclusión, esta inauguración ha sido muy emocionante y divertida para todos, y este reinicio nos trae un año muy competitivo e interesante. ¡No dejes de acompañarnos en los siguientes eventos que vienen muy pronto! TALLER DE LÍDERES Hace dos años tuvimos la oportunidad de participar en el Primer Taller Nacional de Jóvenes Líderes y el año siguiente al segundo, este año con mucha alegría vimos que se había internacionalizado y asistimos al Primer Taller Nacional de la Américas que se llevó a cabo del 07 al 10 de junio. Cada taller abarca temas diferentes pero las enseñanzas que querían inculcarnos era la misma y era muy clara: formar ciudadanos proactivos y conscientes de los aspectos, positivos y negativos del mundo en el que vivimos, para ser líderes del cambio y podamos influir en la mejora de nuestras sociedades. El taller de Las América de este año contó con la participación de estudiantes de Lima, Arequipa y de delegaciones de Venezuela, Argentina y Ecuador. Cada día de este taller fuimos empapados con conocimientos de temas sociales, políticos, culturales… etc. Lo más interesante fue que compartimos conocimientos y actividades con estudiantes de diferentes lugares, cada delegación expuso sus puntos de vista siendo muy importante conocer sus opiniones sobre los temas tratados .También pudimos apreciar sus presentaciones culturales. Lo mejor es que sin importar los límites geográficos de cada país, cada uno era un ciudadano del mundo y que gracias a la tecnología y la globalización, dónde estemos, puede promover el cambio y hacerlo grande. Durante las charlas, todos aportábamos, compartíamos ideas y al momento de elaborar trabajos, colaborábamos en equipo. Fue un taller donde se vieron a personas proactivas, trabajadoras y carismáticas que lideraron el grupo de diferentes maneras para alcanzar objetivos. Aprendimos que el significado de líder era muy diferente del que se cree, aprendimos que líder es la persona que inspira motiva a otras personas y es capaz de guiar y ser guiado por otros. Sin duda, una exposición muy inspiradora fue la del invitado de este año, el Dr. Hernán Garrido Lecca, él nos habló sobre la importancia de la innovación en el mundo actual, nos habló también de como todos podríamos ser inventores, si pensábamos en mejorar algo que se utiliza cotidianamente. Resaltó que lo que convertiría a los países sudamericanos en desarrollados, sería la innovación y creación de nuevos productos y no ser sólo proveedores de materias primas, nos motivó a que sigamos lo que naturalmente queremos ser, estudiar y desarrollarnos en lo que nos inspira y el éxito vendría solo. . La forma de aprender nuevos conocimientos era también mediante las dinámicas de grupo, Diego Durand Marroú y Carlos Franco se encargaron de llevarlas a acabo y de hacernos reír con sus ocurrencias. Las dinámicas eran un medio de aprendizaje y también de relajación, desde el primer día hasta el último día del taller, rompieron el hielo entre los que éramos ¨Desconocidos, extraños¨ y poco a poco nos unieron más y más, tanto que el último día se hizo muy difícil decir adiós y aún tenemos la esperanza de volvernos a encontrar. Las experiencias que vivimos en grupo fué muy especial y puedo asegurar que la mayoría de los participantes está de acuerdo con eso. Quisiera agradecer enormemente al equipo organizador, los profesores Ricardo Fumachi, Cecilia Montes y Héctor Martín Miranda por haber pensado y planeado cada aspecto del taller y que gracias a su esfuerzo y dedicación el taller pudo darse a cabo. LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP Not just another workshop. No matter which area of knowledge we teach from, we want our students to succeed; to become successful men and women with a wide understanding of life and a keen motivation towards self-improvement. Our changing world, however, demands more than what lessons and exams usually give. Our students are now facing a globalized scenario in which communications happen in real-time all around the orb; national economies are becoming increasingly dependent on international fi g u r e s ; c u l t u r a l diversity is not just a banner to stand by, but a concern in terms of national identity; science development have revolutionized our lifestyle in terms of health, nutrition and prevention; and even the Internet have drawn human relationships to the new level of virtual societies. I have seen the span of opportunities and challenges enlarge dramatically in the last 20 years, and it doesn’t give signs of getting any slower. We now need a knowledgeable generation of young men and women with a greater desire to be socially involved in local and world issues; a youth with the courage to take the lead and promote change, tolerance, and progression. And here’s where events like our First
Latin-American Young Leaders’ Workshop plays a decisive role. Being the fifth of its kind, the Workshop (as we usually call it) has also adapted to the changes and needs of our community and the world. This year’s edition was subtitled “Líderes sin Fronteras” (leaders without boundaries) to highlight our call for a youth with a greater desire to participate in their communities
motivational games. During two of the three lectures I presented, and in several other occasions, the students shared ideas and opinions that often surprised us because of their depth and ingenuity. I enjoyed how their answers and presentations enriched every single principle taught. They demonstrated a clear understanding of what being citizens of the world means, a profound awareness of their national identity and the need for greater tolerance between cultures, and a r e m a r k a b l e willingness to change and become a positive influence in their communities. Their assertiveness and active participation increased my hope for the future and the coming generations.

We enjoyed the visit of Hernán Garrido-Lecca, Peruvian economist, inventor, politician and writer, who shared his experiences with students from Ecuador, Argentina, Venezuela and Peru, including 20 of our students. His lecture, which kept them paying close attention for more than an hour, motivated our youth to take the initiative and never give up.
At the end of the Workshop, I had a great feeling of satisfaction. Satisfaction for the finished task, for the ideas shared, for the attributes observed in our youth. Indeed, taking part of this Workshop has renewed my commitment to encourage the youth to surpass themselves and to stand for what is virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy.

PROYECTO INSTITUCIONAL DE SERVICIO Proyecto “El Porvenir”
It was going the last day of our stay in El Porvenir. I was really sad because it had been a great week with the Markham students. The children in El Porvenir taught me many new things which will stay with me forever because they are life lessons that help me see how people reality are. Since it was time to say goodbye, the children, teachers and parents performed a roderos. It was a nice show.
The week I spent in El Porvenir and what I learned will help me face problems in life. We don’t always have what we want, but we should take advantage of what we have so that in the future we don’t have regrets. left the place a little sad because I know I won’t see the children again. They always had a smiling face for us, and it filled us with enthusiasm. If I had the chance, I would return and stay with them! Chabeli Iglesias Grade 12 IB

TEATRO Mi reto del mes Siempre en nuestras vidas se van a presentar nuevas oportunidades, pero a muchos les ha pasado que se les presentan como retos. Esta vez, mi reto fue el teatro. ¿Qué es el teatro? Para los literatos es un género literario. Para los “directores” y “productores” es su trabajo, y p a r a l o s a c t o re s , l o s m á s apasionados en el tema, no es sólo su pasión; sino su modo de vida. Para mí, a pesar recién incursionado en las tablas con el musical de “Annie;” me he dado cuenta porque lo llaman arte. Ese arte de transformarte en un nuevo persona, de cambiar el ánimo a los demás, de poder expresarte sin preocuparte de “el qué dirán.” Hasta hace poco me preguntaba por qué los estudiantes usaban su tiempo en
eso, en vez hacer sus deberes y tareas; después de todo eran alumnos, no actores; eso me decía. Pero ahora veo todo de otra manera: no es porque te sobra tiempo y no tienes nada que hacer o por qué no te gustan los estudios y esta es tu forma de distraerte; sino que cuando estás en el escenario; sientes un nuevo aire, vuelves a conocer a tus amigos y profes en otra faceta. No importa si no tienes los grandes papeles; sino, aunque seas un extra, haciéndolo disfrutas con esta nueva aventura. Por eso vale la pena quedarse en el colegio hasta las 8 de la noche (a veces hasta más) repasando el diálogo, afinando tu voz, ensayando la coreografía, aguantando el frío de la noche cajamarquina, esperando en una esquina tu turno de actuar sólo para saber que en el día del espectáculo, el público ría, llora, o sólo aplaude. Para nosotros no
hay mejor recompensa que saber que has transmitido toda tu emoción y sacrificio a través de los aplausos, de las felicitaciones, de los silbidos del público. Al fin, aprendí que no todos lo hacen por dinero o por la vana fama, objetos materiales que desaparecen con el tiempo. Por el contrario, muchos actores lo hacen por la admiración, por el reconocimiento de tu arduo trabajo. Y por el hecho de transformarte en alguien más; te hace conocerte mejor a ti mismo. Estos sentimientos nadie te los va a quitar, aunque pasé una eternidad; tú siempre tendrás el recuerdo de esta bonita experiencia. ¿Y tú te atreverías a cumplir el reto del mes? PROMOCIÓN 2012: CADIPSUS CADIPSUS es un nombre que representa a un grupo de jóvenes que estamos ya listos para salir a un nuevo mundo. Caminos Diferentes pero siempre Unidos, como bien lo dice el nombre, cada uno de nosotros tomará un camino distinto, y está será el último año de poder estar juntos diariamente. Somos una promoción con muchas esperanzas de crecer, de lograr objetivos y cumplir metas, en un mundo cada vez más competitivo. Esta competencia hace que a veces los amigos dejen de serlo, pero nosotros a pesar del tiempo, la distancia, la competencia, las oportunidades, somos una promoción que está hecha para ser una sola. Y esperamos que al volvernos a encontrar, sintamos que fue simplemente ayer el día que decidimos seguir diferentes rumbos.
No quiero decir que nos despedimos del colegio ni de los amigos, porque uno nunca se despide ni de los buenos momentos ni de los buenos amigos. Quiero terminar diciendo algo que todos en la promoción, estoy segura sienten y piensan, y es un gracias al colegio, a nuestros padres a los amigos, a Cajamarca, y sobre todo a Dios que escribió en nuestros destinos la posibilidad de conocernos y de disfrutar tantos años juntos.
