So far we have been looking at ArcReader in Data View. This is Layout View, where you can create finished maps. Most significantly you can “Bookmark” areas on the map you need to look at on a regular basis. You can also print or export maps from Layout View for meetings or presentations.

GIS Solutions - ArcGIS Online

In ArcGIS Online layers can be uploaded to form an online, interactive map. Most importantly each map has its own URL, which means it can be accessed and shared just like any other website. The only costs associated with this product are an initial set up fee and a minimal fee to update data (if needed).

As in ArcReader layers can be turned on and off. You can also Open the “Attribute Table” for each layer and do a “Definition Query” to search by a particular attribute. In this example we’ve filtered the water mains to see only those that are 8” in diameter.

Like in ArcReader you can click on a feature and get additional information about it. In this example I’ve clicked on a spot that contains a total of 5 layers. We can navigate through the corresponding pop-up boxes by using the triangle in the top right. We can also add a marker if we want to come back to this spot later. In ArcGIS Online layers can be set to appear or disappear at certain scales. In this example the streets layer appears as you zoom in. Like in ArcReader it is possible to link to external documents or websites.

ArcGIS Online - Key Features

The address search feature lets you search for a specific address. It is also possible to change the basemap, as shown in this example.
