Performance Notes The Portent by Herman Melville Hanging from the beam, Slowly swaying (such the law), Gaunt the shadow on your green, Shenandoah! The cut is on the crown (Lo, John Brown), And the stabs shall heal no more. Hidden in the cap Is the anguish none can draw; So your future veils its face, Shenandoah! But the streaming beard is shown (Weird John Brown), The meteor of the war. This poem, written by author and poet Herman Melville, powerfully summarizes Melville's view that the execution of famous abolitionist John Brown in 1859 was essentially "the portent", a harbinger of the terrible violence to come in the American Civil War. In this unapologetically dark poem, reading as a prophetic proclamation to the American people, Melville recognizes that John Brown's death encapsulated the state of the union in his time: a devastating divide between the slave-owning South and the abolitionist-leaning North.

Whenever the word 'Shenandoah' appears, the word is pronounced (in IPA) as ˌʃɛnənˈda, (3 syllables) the last syllable rhyming with the word 'law', except for m. 24 where it is pronounced as it typically is:ˌʃɛnənˈdoʊə, (4 syllables). Where ever a small notehead in parentheses appears to the right of a normal-sized note, the small note is merely an enharmonic respelling of the larger, and should not be sung.
