The Stepinac 2013 Season in Pictures

Page 1

2013 Coming into the season with first year starters at nearly every position, there were certainly doubts about how this group would adapt to the tough CHSFL. The Crusaders quickly established themselves as one of the league’s best, however this was not an easy season by any means. There were high and lows, but through it all, there was a sense of excitement that this could be a special year. Although it didn’t end the way we had all hoped, Stepinac accomplished great things. For the first time since 1970, there was no thanksgiving football in White Plains. While the lack of a feel-good game to end the season made the brutal reality of elimination sting for a bit longer, there was that one game that will be talked about for years to come. After a crushing loss to arch rival Iona Prep in the regular season, the playoff meeting between the two went very differently. A safety keyed the Crusaders’ comeback in one of the greatest wins of recent memory and only the second victory against the Gaels in the last ten years. Stepinac reached the AAA semifinals for the second time in three years and with a strong core of juniors and even sophomores on the team, the future looks bright.

tepinac’s 2013 season kicked off on a hot and sunny afternoon at home against Mount St. Michael. This young group of Crusaders looked to prove that they were for real in the CHSFL. In this game, points came early and often for the home team. After forcing two Mount fumbles (both recovered by the Mountaineers), Stepinac got the ball at their own 38, eager to put points on the board. A few plays later, Brandon Coleman executed a perfect fake handoff before streaking down the sideline 52 yards untouched into the end zone. The ensuing Mount drive was cut short when Gavin Heslop forced another fumble, this one recovered by the defense deep in their own territory. The offense didn’t waste much time in doubling their lead. On the first play after the turnover, Malcolm Major ran up the middle into traffic, but missed tackles and great blocking allowed him to cut to the outside. He used his speed to turn the corner and by the time he hit his own 40, he was gone. This 82-yard touchdown run put the Crusaders up 14-0. The next Stepinac possession turned out the same way as the last two; Coleman rolled left and hit a diving Giancarlo Furio in the end zone from 4 yards out. The Crusaders went up 21-0 with less than a minute to go in the first quarter. The Mountaineers fought back with a touchdown of their own, trimming the Stepinac lead to 21-6. The Crusaders, however, would answer right back with a 13-play, 63-yard drive capped off when Coleman threw a strike to Jerry Thompson, who spun out of reach of a defender at the 10 and jogged in for a 15-yard score. Right before halftime, Heslop forced yet another fumble, again recovered by Stepinac. The Crusaders had just enough time to put more points on the board. A big completion to Giancarlo Furio set up Major’s second rushing touchdown of the day, this one from 13 yards out. After the extra point, Stepinac took a 34-6 lead. The second half began much like the first half was. After forcing a Mountaineer’s punt, Major added to his incredible day when he took a handoff up the middle. A missed tackle at the line of scrimmage allowed him to get free and after he burst through the last two Mount defenders, he was gone again for his second long touchdown run of the game, this one a 59-yarder. A fourth down stop gave the Crusaders great field position once again. Great running brought Stepinac down to the goal line, where Major capped off his afternoon with a 1-yard touchdown, his fourth of the day. The Crusaders went up 476. The offense didn’t score again; they didn’t need to. The defense forced 3 turnovers and held the Mountaineers to two touchdowns. The running game shined with 364 yards, including 185 from Major and 120 from Coleman.

Overall, this was an outstanding team victory and a great way to start the season.

oming off a big victory over Mount St. Michael in the season opener, Stepinac looked to carry their momentum into week 2. At Aviator Field in Brooklyn, the Crusaders faced a Xavier team on a 7 game winning streak dating back to last year. The offense didn’t wast much time. On the second play from scrimmage, Malcolm Major took Brandon Coleman’s handoff 58 yards for his fourth touchdown in the first five quarters of the year. Xavier moved the ball well on their next drive, but had to settle for a field goal after the Crusader defense kept them out of the end zone. Two Stepinac possessions later, Jerry Thompson stunned everyone watching with one of the best catches you’ll ever see. Coleman threw deep down the sideline for Thompson. With his body turned back towards the quarterback, Thompson leaped and reached back with his right arm fully extended, pulling down the pass for an unbelievable 31-yard gain. A couple of plays later, Coleman found Thompson in the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown to put Stepinac up 14-3. Major’s 3-yard touchdown run made it 21-3 at halftime. Xavier muffed the opening kickoff of the second half and the Crusaders recovered at Xavier’s 12 yard line. Coleman promptly ran for a 10 yard touchdown to give Stepinac a 28-3 advantage. On the ensuing kickoff, Xavier fumbled once more, again giving the Crusaders great field position. On fourth-and-15, Coleman hit Damarcus Miller for a 30-yard pass and a first down at the 5-yard line. Major then punched in his third touchdown of the day and his sixth on the year. Stepinac wins 41-3, improving their record to 2-0

fter two straight blowout wins, the Crusaders came into their week 3 matchup against St. Anthony’s with a lot of confidence. Facing the perennial powerhouse of the CHSFL, Stepinac looked to pick up a huge upset win at home. The Friars struck the first blow on a touchdown run by Jordan Gowins. Late in the first quarter, the Crusader defense stepped up when Damarcus Miller picked off a deep pass by Greg Galligan. A few plays later, Brandon Coleman threw downfield for a wide open Gavin Heslop, who sidestepped a Friars defender and jogged in for a 42-yard score, tying the game at 7. However, St. Anthony’s came right back when Galligan broke down the sideline, staying in bounds for a 65-yard touchdown. Down 14-7, the Crusaders were sparked by

pinac 14, St. Anthony’s 31 a long run from Malcolm Major into Friars territory. A few plays later, Coleman dropped back to pass, but found a hole in the defense and scampered in for a 10-yard touchdown, knotting the game at 14. With 1:33 to go in the first half, Heslop made his second big play, intercepting a Galligan pass and returning it 36 yards to the Friars 22. However, Stepinac failed to convert and went into the locker room tied at 14. The second half was a different story. Early in the third quarter, Patrick Heffernan booted a beautiful punt that bounced out of bounds inside Friars 1 yard line. Unfortunately, two plays later, Gowins added to his unbelievable game with a 94 yard touchdown run, making it 21-14. The Crusader defense forced two turnovers in the second half, but 3 drives halted inside the St. Anthony’s 25 yard line and the momentum slowly shifted over towards the Friars. They added 10 points in the fourth quarter and won 31-14.

tepinac’s week 4 matchup with St. John the Baptist started out slowly, but by the time the game concluded, it was another blowout win for the Crusaders. On the Cougar’s homecoming day, Stepinac was forced to punt on their first four possessions and St. John jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 79-yard touchdown run by quarterback Matthew Brady. The Crusader’s first sign of life on offense came halfway through the second quarter. Brandon Coleman threw deep downfield for Osaze Perry-Porter. Perry-Porter made a leaping catch, then jumped over a St. John’s defender and took it in for a 50-yard score. A couple of minutes later, Coleman hit Jerry Thompson for a 7-yard touchdown. On the next possession for the Cougars, Michael Carlucci stripped Brady. The ball was scooped up by Perry-Porter, who ran it back 47 yards for the third Crusader score of the day. Stepinac went into halftime in control, up 21-7. Early in the fourth quarter, Malcolm Major took an option pitch from Coleman 42 yards down the sideline for his 7th touchdown of the year, putting the Crusaders up 28-7. A few minutes later, great blocking by Brian Malone, Timmy Hill, and Daniel Hernandez opened up a huge hole for Major, who then avoided 4 would-be-tacklers on his way to a 55-yard touchdown. In the last two minutes, Stepinac added 7 more points on Ty Ennis’ 2-yard run, his first score of the season. Other than the one long touchdown, the Crusader defense shut down the Cougars offense. The offense, after a sluggish start, scored 42 points in 3 quarters. All of this added up to a 42-7 victory, improving their record to 3-1.

n a warm night in Staten Island, the Crusaders were opposed by a very strong Farrell team that was tied with Stepinac in the standings, at 3-1. The Crusaders won the toss and Week 5 | 10/5/13 elected to receive. On the first play from scrimmage, Brandon Coleman faked a handoff before great blocking opened up a huge hole. Coleman darted through the Farrell defense and picked up 55 yards before being knocked out of bounds. On the very next play, Malcolm Major scampered untouched into the end zone from 12 yards out, putting Stepinac up 7-0 only 23 seconds into the Game. On their next possession, powerful running by Coleman, Major, and Ty Ennis drove the Crusaders 80 yards down the field. A 1-yard touchdown run by Major capped off the drive and put Stepinac up 14-0. On the ensuing Lion’s possession, The Crusader defense made the first of many great plays on the night. Quarterback Vinny Aranda hooked up with his receiver on a deep pass, but Gavin Heslop came up behind him and knocked the ball loose, giving the ball right back to Stepinac. The Crusaders couldn’t convert, but Farrell turned the ball over again on their next drive when a botched snap was recovered by Osaze Perry-Porter. In the second quarter, the Lions had two scoring opportunities falter in the red zone as the Stepinac D stepped up and stopped Farrell twice on fourth down. The Crusaders went into the locker room at halftime up 14-0. Halfway through the third quarter, the Lions had their most costly turnover of all when an awful snap on a punt downed Farrell on their own four yard line. 2 plays later, Coleman connected with Jerry Thompson for a 9-yard score, giving the Crusaders a 21-0 lead. However, after forcing the Lions to punt, a muffed punt return by Stepinac gave Farrell new life, and they scored

Stepinac 28, Farrell 7 on a 5-yard touchdown run, giving them momentum and making it a 21-7 ballgame. After punting on offense, it was the Crusader defense’s chance to shine as Brian Harris stripped the quarterback, and Stepinac came up with their fourth turnover of the night. The audience didn’t have to wait too long for the fifth. On the first play of Farrell’s next drive, Dante-Ezekiel Francis forced another fumble, and the Crusaders took over on the Lion’s 23 yard line. Unfortunately, the offense turned the ball over on downs and it was back on defense for Stepinac. After trading punts for much of the fourth quarter, Ty Ennis sealed the win with a speedy yet powerful 29-yard touchdown run, adding to his breakout game and putting the Crusaders up for good, 28-7. The rushing attack put up 257 yards and punished Farrell with it’s many aspects. On the defensive side, Stepinac put on a clinic, causing 5 turnovers and limiting Farrell’s potent offense to just 7 points. The 28-7 win for the Crusaders improved their standings and later in the week, they were ranked #25 in the Tri-State, the first time since 2011 that Stepinac has been part of the list.

fter playing two straight games on the road, the Crusaders returned home for one of the biggest games of the year, against the unbeaten defending CHSFL champions, Chaminade. The Flyers received the opening kickoff, but were forced to punt. On Stepinac’s first play from scrimmage, Malcolm Major took a direct snap and accelerated through a huge hole, sprinting past Chaminade defenders for 43 yards before being pushed out at the Flyer’s 25. Unfortunately, the drive wrapped up on the next play when Brandon Coleman’s pass was intercepted at the 18-yard line. Chaminade used a power running game to drive down the field and score on a 16-yard run by Robert Speranza Jr., putting the Flyers up 7-0. With a few minutes left in the half, Stepinac was forced to punt. However, the Chaminade defense got past the Crusaders and blocked it, recovering the ball at Stepinac’s 8-yard line. On the next play, quarterback Sean Cerrone faked a handoff and ran left towards the end zone, but he coughed up the ball at the 2-yard line. However, John Tigh of the Flyers pounced on the ball in the end zone to give Chaminade a 14-0 lead. The Crusaders were forced to punt on their next drive, which set up the Stepinac defense for their first big play of the day. Cerrone threw over the head of his receiver and the pass settled right into the hands of Damarcus Miller at the Crusader’s 45-yard line. He returned it all the way back to Flyer’s 32. 4 plays later, Coleman ran in untouched from 6 yards out, trimming the deficit to 7. Stepinac received the opening kickoff of the second half, but went 3 and out. After a very uneventful third quarter, the Crusaders got the ball at their own 20-yard line and began their best drive of the game. Led by the running of Coleman and Major, Stepinac embarked on a 14 play, 80 yard drive that was capped off with Coleman’s 10-yard scamper into the end zone, knotting the game up at 14 with 2:22 left. After forcing Chaminade to punt, the Crusaders got the ball back with time to win the game. On the first play of the drive, Coleman threw deep for Jerry Thompson, but the pass was picked off at the Flyer’s 35-yard line. Now Chaminade had their chance for a quick score to win the game. But they had lost their starting quarterback, Cerrone to an injury earlier in the quarter, so it was Dave Jackolski under center for the Flyers. He tried to rush to his left, but was met by Damarcus Miller who jarred the ball loose. It popped up in the air and was caught by Brian Harris. Stepinac only had about 50 seconds left to win the game. Malcolm Major stepped up with a 28-yard run on the Crusader’s second play, putting them on the Flyer’s 3-yard line. Unfortunately, an intentional grounding penalty set them back 5 yards. On the next play, Coleman threw to the end zone for Miller, but the ball fell incomplete and Stepinac would have to attempt a field goal to win the game. Mathew Tierney lined up for the 25-yard game winner, but the snap was mishandled and we headed to overtime. Chaminade got the ball first and ran the ball for 9 yards on the first three plays, setting up 4th and 1 from the 11-yard line. Joseph Bellantuono took the handoff and fell forward across the 8-yard line, picking up the first down. A play later, it was deja vu for the Flyers when Speranza Jr. fumbled on the goal line and the ball was recovered in the end zone by Jack Graffagnino of Chaminade, giving the Flyers a 21-14 lead. It was do or die for the Crusaders, as they had to score a touchdown to avoid defeat. after 3 straight running plays, Stepinac was faced with a 4th and 2. Major took the handoff, but was stopped short of the first down and the ballgame was over. Stepinac was haunted by missed opportunities and what could’ve been a triumphant victory became a heartbreaking loss.

he Crusader’s annual rivalry game with Iona has always been unpredictable, but no one was expecting what transpired in week 7. Once again, Stepinac’s offense started out strong. On the second play from scrimmage, Gavin Heslop took a handoff and broke through a huge opening, scampering down the sideline for 94 yards before being caught from behind at the 1-yard line. However, the offense lost yardage over the next 3 plays, and the field goal unit came on for just the second field goal attempt of the year. Unfortunately, Matt Tierney’s 25-yard try bounced off the right upright, and a massive opportunity was missed. The Gaels promptly drove 80 yards down the field, scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run. After the Crusaders were forced to punt, Iona tacked on 3 more points with a 40-yard field goal and took a 10-0 lead. Stepinac finally cashed in on their next drive, when a 32-yard run by Heslop set up Brandon Coleman’s 22-yard touchdown strike to Giancarlo Furio. But Iona came right back, scoring on a 30-yard run by Stephon Smith. The extra point was blocked by Damarcus Miller, so the Gaels took a 16-7 advantage. The back and forth trend of the first half continued with another big drive by the Crusaders, capped off by a 22-yard run from Tyquan Ennis, pulling Stepinac within 2 points, at 16-14. After an Iona punt, Stepinac fumbled, setting up a 45-yard field goal from Iona right before the half, making in a 19-14 game. The Crusaders came out of the locker room with a trick up their sleeve. On the third play of the second half, Jerry Thompson caught a screen pass from Coleman. Before he crossed the line of scrimmage, he flipped the ball to Ennis, who accelerated past multiple defenders, moving the chains all the way to the Gael’s 23, gaining 39 yards. But a holding call negated a touchdown and Stepinac turned the ball over on downs. Everything went downhill from there. The Gaels scored a touchdown on their next drive and a series of Crusader turnovers gave Iona prime position for their next two scores.

The final was 40-14, bringing S tepinac’s record to 4-3.

fter two straight tough losses at home, the Crusaders looked to get back on track in their final away game of the regular season. Once again, the offense started out slowly, punting on their first two drives. Their third drive started with great field position, at the Fordham Prep 37. On their second play, Brandon Coleman, behind great blocking, burst through a giant opening and scampered in untouched from 25 yards out. On the ensuing Ram’s possession, a high snap was scooped up on the run by Osaze Perry-Porter and downed at the Fordham 14 yard line, where Stepinac took over. The offense couldn’t find the end zone, but Matt Tierney knocked in a 27-yard field goal, his first of the year, putting the Crusaders up 10-0. After a punt by the Rams, Stepinac continued their season long trend of effective rushing during their 11 play, 76 yard drive, capped off with a 4-yard run from Malcolm Major. After the defense forced another Fordham 3 and out, the offense was sparked this time through the air, when Coleman found Giancarlo Furio deep down the middle for a gain of 38 yards. Some tough running brought the Crusaders down to the Ram’s 21 yard line before Tierney knocked in a 32-yard field goal, his season long and second of the game, putting Stepinac up 20-0 with 1:33 left in the first half. drive was very short, and sweet for the Crusader defense. On the first play, Robert Bambil stepped in front of a James McHale pass, picking it off and taking it back to the Ram’s 31. After a first down completion to Jerry Thompson, Tierney had just enough time to boot his third field goal of the half, this time a 28 yarder. Stepinac enjoyed their halftime up 23-0. The offense picked up right where they left off on their first drive of the third quarter. Major made his first big play of the day when he took a pitch up the middle, avoiding a couple defenders before sidestepping another and darting down the sideline for 42 yards, down to the 18. On the very next play, Coleman connected with a wide open Thompson, who trotted in for an 18-yard score. After a Fordham punt, the offense embarked on another long drive, capped off with Tierney’s fourth field goal of the game, from 26 yards out, giving the Crusaders a 33-0 advantage. Stepinac was in complete control by the fourth quarter, and about halfway through, Tierney added his fifth field goal of the day, making him 5/5 and setting a school record for the most field goals in a single game. The defense was lights out, never allowing the Rams past the Stepinac 30. This 36-0 victory improved their season record to 5-3, and boosting the team’s confidence going into the season finale.

Stepinac 2

28, St. Joe’s by the Sea 14

i

t is always a difficult task to defend the obscure offense of St. Joe’s by the Sea, but on this chilly sunday afternoon in White Plains, the Crusader defense did an excellent job. The Vikings won the toss and elected to receive. After picking up a first down, St. Joe’s was stopped on 4th down, giving the Crusaders great field position. However, they couldn’t convert and were forced to punt. Neither offense could get anything going for the remainder of the first quarter, but Stepinac’s first possession of the second quarter changed all of that. Brandon Coleman made some plays with his arm and with his legs, but it was Tiquan Ennis who capped off the drive. He ran left, picking up a block from Malcolm Major, and burst through two Sea defenders, hugging the sideline en route to a 29-yard score. The defense promptly forced St. Joe’s to punt to Major for what would prove to be a huge turning point in the game. Malcolm fielded the punt at his own 32, after outrunning the first defender, he sidestepped another before using his pure speed to run through a herd of nine Vikings. By the time he hit midfield, he had nothing but green ahead of him and his 68-yard score put the Crusaders up 14-0. A series of drops burned Stepinac, but the defense did their part, and they went into the locker room up two touchdowns. The Crusaders received the opening kickoff of the second half with a little trickery on their mind. On third down, Coleman threw a screen pass to Jerry Thompson, who, instead of running, turned and threw a bomb to a wide open T.J. Morrison. Morrison jogged in for a 64-yard touchdown, his first of the year. Stepinac took a 21-0 lead. The defense forced a Sea fourth and 6 in an obvious punting situation, but when playing the Vikings, you can never be too sure. Indeed, the punter took the snap and, instead of punting the ball away, he handed it off to quarterback Ryan Minlionica who connected with his receiver downfield for a backbreaking 32 yard gain. Sea kept the drive going and Minlionica punched the ball in to finish it off. After the two-point conversion, the Crusaders led 21-8. At the start of the fourth quarter, Stepinac punted the ball back the Vikings. Another long drive ensued, ending with touchdown run by Joe Barretta. The Crusader defense held together and stopped the 2-point conversion attempt, so with 6:37 left in the fourth quarter, Stepinac led 21-14. As they always do, Sea attempted an onside kick, and incredibly, they recovered it. Now, with great field position, the Vikings drove to take the lead. Unfortunately for Sea, they ran into the Crusader defense at the wrong time. A third down stop set up a crucial fourth and long. The defense stood tall and stopped Minlionica in his tracks, giving Stepinac prime field position, and an opportunity to seal the win. However, the Crudaders had their own close call when they were faced with a fourth down from the Viking’s 40 yard line. Coleman faked a handoff, then waited for the play to develop, before scampering through a hole and picking up tough 16 yards. On the very next play, Coleman burst up the middle and, with the help of his blockers, ran untouched into the end zone from 24 yards out, giving Stepinac a 28-14 lead that they would not relinquish. Coleman’s clutch performance led the Crusaders to a hard-fought win in their regular season finale. The defense played very well against the always unpredictable Sea attack. Stepinac finished the season 6-3, and went into the CHSFL playoffs as the 4 seed.

STEPINAC STUFFED SEA ALL AFTERNOON

L

ets go back to week 7. In one of the worst games of recent memory, the Crusaders were torn apart by their rivals, Iona Prep, 40-14. Stepinac now seeked revenge in a win or go home against the same Gaels just 3 weeks later. As the 4 seed, the Crusaders played host in this CHSFL quarterfinal playoff matchup. In what would turn out to be a defensive battle, Stepinac received the opening kickoff and despite a 23-yard carry from Ty Ennis, were forced to punt. Iona went 3-and-out, and the first quarter quickly became a battle of field position. After trading punts again, the Crusaders got the ball at their own 21. On a third-and-7 from the 24 yard line, Brandon Coleman rolled left out of the pocket and fired deep downfield for Giancarlo Furio, hitting the Tight End for a gain of 32, down to the Gael’s 44. At the 32 yard line, Stepinac was faced with a key 4th down. Coleman threw for a wide open Furio, but the pass squirted through his hands. However, he reacted quickly and trapped the ball between his legs, hanging on for the sensational grab. Unfortunately, two plays later, the Crusaders coughed the ball up, giving the Iona offense their chance. They drove down into Stepinac territory, but Damarcus Miller came up with a big tackle on fourth down to cut that drive short. Both teams punted once again, and when Stepinac got the ball back, they looked to break the scoreless tie before halftime. Coleman led the Crusaders down to the 9-yard line on the strength of a couple 3rd down conversions and a key pass interference call on 4th down. With time running out in the half, Matt Tierney lined up to try a 27-yard field goal into the wind and rain. The kick missed wide right, and the game was scoreless at halftime. The Gaels took the second half kickoff and didn’t waste much time in striking the first blow. On third down, Nick Kryza connected with his receiver Riley Aviles for a 50-yard gain, down to the 16 yard line. On the next play, Stephon Smith burst into the end zone, giving Iona a 7 point advantage. Once again trailing to Iona, Stepinac looked to bounce back. After a 3-and-out on offense, the defense forced a punt from the Gaels. The Crusaders got the ball at the Gael’s 45 and went to work immediately. A big run by Coleman put Stepinac at the 32 yard line before Coleman threw deep down the sideline for Gavin Heslop. Heslop made a leaping catch over the defender and kept one foot in bounds to secure the fantastic 30-yard completion. Unfortunately, the offense went backwards on their next 4 plays and wound up turning the ball over on downs. This may have been for the better, because on the Gael’s first play, Smith was stuffed in the end zone by Miller and Chris Jordan, putting 2 points on the home scoreboard and completely swinging the momentum. The Crusader’s ensuing drive didn’t disappoint. After key completion to Giancarlo Furio, Stepinac was faced with a huge third down at the gael’s 18-yard line. Coleman hit senior Osaze Perry-Porter in traffic. Perry-Porter spun out of the reach of two Gaels and brought the ball down to the 3, picking up 16 tough yards. Two plays later, Coleman again used his legs, scampering out of a collapsing pocket into the end zone. He gave the Crusaders their first lead against Iona this season. On the two-point attempt, Coleman rolled right and threw a strike to Jerry Thompson in the end zone, putting Stepinac up for good, 10-7. Iona’s ensuing drive was cut short when Kryza’s pass was picked off by Nar Itwaru, who returned the ball inside the 40, piling onto the Crusader’s growing momentum. The Gael’s bad luck multiplied on their next possession. This time, Kryza went down with a leg injury and Iona had to call upon their third string quarterback Lyle Bennett. This overwhelmed offense failed to get anything going. On fourth down, Perry-Porter sacked Bennett, forcing a turnover on downs. With about five minutes left on the clock, things looked grim for the Gaels. However, Iona would get one last shot. But Stepinac’s defense prevailed once again when senior Brian Harris recorded one of the biggest sacks of his career on fourth down, extinguishing any remaining hope for the Gaels. This win was the first victory over Iona since 2010 and some major revenge for what went down earlier in the year.

CHSFL SEMIFINALS 11/16/13

oming off an historic playoff victory over Iona, the Crusaders hit the road to take on #1 seeded St. Anthony’s. Looking to swing a major upset, Stepinac received the opening kickoff. The offense did pick up one first down, but were forced to punt. The Crusader defense forced a very impressive 3 and out from the Friars, but the good fortune ran out on St. Anthony’s next possession when Naim Jones took a screen pass 64 yards for a touchdown. The Friars doubled their lead early in the second quarter on a Jones 6-yard touchdown catch. Down two touchdowns, Stepinac desperately needed points. They turned to a trick play to try to make it happen. Ty Ennis took a handoff before flipping the ball to T.J. Morrison who threw to a wide open Daniel Negron for a gain of 27. Negron remained involved in the offense when he caught a key 12-yard pass on third down. After a big run from Ennis, the offense was set up inside the 20. However, the Crusaders stalled and turned the ball over on downs. St. Anthony’s began to move the ball downfield and just when it was looking like the Friars were going to put more points on the board, Damarcus Miller picked off Greg Galligan’s pass and returned it all the way back into Friar’s territory. Unfortunately, the offense couldn’t get anything going and had to punt. St. Anthony’s embarked on a 7 play, 74 yard drive capped off with a Jordan Gowins 36-yard run, putting the Friars up 21-0 with 2 minutes to go in the first half. St. Anthony’s ended up with one more possession before halftime and cashed in with a 54-yard touchdown catch from Michael Russo. Stepinac went into the locker room down 4 touchdowns. Galligan found a wide open Nick Esposito for a 44-yard score on their second drive of the second half, all but sealing the win for the Friars. The Crusader’s first real scoring opportunity of the second half came early in the fourth quarter when Josh Smart sacked the backup quarterback, who lost grip on the ball and flung it backwards. Robert Bambil recovered inside St. Anthony’s 20. But the unfortunate trend continued, and Stepinac was stopped on fourth down. After trading punts, the Crusaders were finally able to move the ball on the strength of Brandon Coleman’s legs. Coleman capped off the drive with a 3-yard pass to T.J. Morrison in the end zone. St. Anthony’s led 35-6. Stepinac’s final scoring drive of the game and the year was keyed by a 34-yard scamper from Coleman who hit Giancarlo Furio one play later from 10 yards out. After Negron punched in the two point conversion, the score was 35-14. In the end, Stepinac played with tons of heart, but were just overmatched against a St. Anthony’s team that would go on to win the CHSFL title.

The Crusaders played with tons of heart and pride.
