in their own local communities. Thousands of other young people, youth workers, political representatives and other stakeholders were reached through various activities of the project. One interesting idea was brought forward by the student. Can the water be used for washing cars? The students went to do a survey about the process for water treatment in Coca Cola Company and the water used for washing cars in Xiamen. Some plans and feasibility report were put forward and the idea might be implemented in the end. This is an interesting example how a simple idea put forward by young people can make a change, help us save resources and support the environment. Xiamen team looks into aquaculture Aquaculture is one of the most important industries for farmers to earn money in Fujian Province where Xiamen is located. However, this has serious consequences for the environment if aquaculture is not conducted in an environmentally-friendly way. Young people from the Xiamen University who were involved in the Europe – China – Earth project decided to research more into integrated aquaculture and green farming. What is integrated aquaculture? Fish, shrimp, clams and sea grass are cultured in the same pond to set up a sustainable ecosystem. In this way, farmers can earn much more money as the survival rates for fish and shellfish increasing. And most importantly, it is also an environment friendly method of aquaculture. We decided to promote this method among farmers in Xiamen. The mix of economic and environmental benefits was a very big attraction for many of them and this concept is becoming popular in Xiamen.
