I am delighted to share with you the 2022 Annual Members Directory of the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA), as we mark the 60th anniversary of the organization this year.
ADAA’s standards of connoisseurship, scholarship, and ethical practice have spoken volumes to me since my first year as a member in 2001, and have led me to serve the ADAA in different capacities for close to a decade. Now, as President of the Board of Directors, it is an honor to carry the torch from my predecessor, Andrew Schoelkopf.
Our community of member art dealers is a unique group working to further artistic history and raise awareness for present-day culture. Each member is exemplary in their own regional communities as well as nationally, through the exhibitions they mount, the artists and col lections they represent, and their contributions to scholarship, institu tions, and artistic production. Our membership continues to grow and diversify, and we are pleased this year to welcome one of the largest groups of new members in the ADAA’s history, with 14 inductees.
A key part of the ADAA’s mission is to assist, support, and strengthen the small business model of our members. As a nimble organization capable of pivoting in response to adversity both on a local and global level, ADAA has facilitated, educated, and provided support to our member constituents in their COVID response and management over the last two years. At the same time, constant devel opments on the federal level have required ongoing action and cooper ation from the ADAA to help legislators understand the many sectors of the art market, and art dealers’ role within it, as they study issues and create new legislation.
While we look toward the future by helping our members sustain thriving businesses, we carry on the tradition of The Art Show with a Gala Preview to benefit our longstanding fair partner, Henry Street Settlement. In more than three decades of partnership, The Art Show has raised over $35 million for Henry Street Settlement, allowing them to provide critical social services and arts programs. With each year, ADAA's bond with Henry Street Settlement grows stronger, and we are grateful to the collegiality of its leadership team: David Garza, Ellen Schneiderman, and Merav Stern.
All of the above has been possible with the steadfast and vigilant stewardship of our Executive Director, Maureen Bray, and her dedi cated team. As we march ahead, we are stronger than ever before and continue as ADAA members to collectively champion the arts and the cultural fabric of our local and national arts communities.

The Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) is a non-profit member ship organization that supports the economic and cultural contributions of the nation’s leading fine art galleries. The ADAA includes nearly 200 members from 30 cities in the U.S., representing hundreds of estab lished and emerging artists internationally. ADAA members have exten sive expertise across primary and secondary markets, and established reputations for upholding best practices in the field. The ADAA serves as a resource and advocate, raising awareness of dealers’ critical roles in the international art market and the cultural community.
Founded in 1962, the ADAA is a leader on issues pertaining to connoisseurship, conservation, scholarship, ethical practice, and public policy. Its members contribute to art historical scholarship through research, publication, and exhibition; by nurturing new artistic talent; and by engaging diverse audiences with a spectrum of art, from the extraordinary work of Old Masters through the most important artists working today. At the forefront of ideas and innovations in the field, ADAA members spur the creative economy and contribute to the vital ity of their communities. The ADAA provides a platform for members, and the broader professional arts community, to engage in active dia logue on timely issues such as the rapid evolution of the art market and the growth of the arts ecology.
Throughout the year, the ADAA hosts professional lectures, discus sions, and forums, and its members host and participate in a wide range of private and public events. A well-established leader in the field, the ADAA is engaging in the issues most essential to the continued success of the industry. In 2012, the ADAA established the ADAA Relief Fund to support galleries and non-profit arts organizations affected by Hurricane Sandy, providing grants to help repair facilities and to encourage an expedient return to operations.
Additionally, the ADAA Foundation, a distinct but connected entity, was established in 1970 to foster appreciation of art and art history in both the public and private spheres. Supported by donations from ADAA members, the Foundation promotes a broad range of activity in the arts and culture community by distributing grants to museums, archives, and arts organizations.
The ADAA is dedicated to promoting a holistic understanding of the art market’s participants and resources, and to supporting the vital activ ity of dealers within this ecology. Its leadership engages in pending leg islation, legal matters, and international trade policies, representing the voices of its members in setting ethical business standards and practices.
The Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) was founded in 1962 with the stated purpose of promoting the highest standards of connoisseurship, scholarship, and ethical practices within the art dealing profession. It is the responsibility of each member to conduct business in a manner that reflects these standards. Each member must, of course, comply with all applicable laws and regulations. Beyond this basic standard, however, each member is expected to conduct business professionally, fairly, with integ rity, and with the courtesy and respect due to artists, clients, colleagues, other members, and the general public.
In order to qualify for membership in ADAA, a dealer must have an established reputation for honesty, integrity, and professionalism among their peers. Prospective members should fulfill ADAA’s Guidelines of Excellence by making a substantial contribution to the cultural life of their community, offering works of high aesthetic quality, presenting worthwhile exhibitions, developing relationships with museums, and publishing schol arly catalogues. A dealer must be in business for at least 5 years and have demonstrated the ethical and financial soundness of their business prac tice to be eligible for ADAA membership.
For more information on the ADAA Code of Ethics and Professional Practices or the procedure for considering new members, visit artdealers.org/about.
The ADAA’s activity culminates annually in The Art Show, the nation’s most respected and longest-running art fair. Held annually at the historic Park Avenue Armory, The Art Show’s proceeds from its opening night Gala Preview and admissions throughout the week benefit Henry Street Settlement, one of New York’s leading social service, arts, and health care organizations. As Henry Street Settlement’s greatest unrestricted source of funding, The Art Show has raised nearly $35 million for the non-profit over more than three decades of partnership with the ADAA.
The Art Show has become synonymous with connoisseurship and expertise, underscoring the importance of the one-to-one connections between visitor, expert, and artwork. An integral part of New York City’s cultural calendar, The Art Show offers collectors, arts professionals, and the public the opportunity to engage with an incredible range of art through thoughtfully curated single-artist, thematic, and group installa tions. Intimately scaled to encourage conversation with ADAA members, the fair features 78 galleries drawn from the ADAA’s membership and selected through a curatorial submission process. The selection criteria ensure that each year The Art Show will showcase a diverse mix of artists, genres, periods, and geographies, inviting visitors to experience premier works from established names as well as those new to the market.
Throughout the year, the ADAA organizes a number of public and member programs and engages in issues most essential to the continued success of the industry.
Public and Member Programs:
The ADAA organizes public programs on collecting and connoisseur ship in markets around the country, as well as talks and webinars on issues critical to the field including cybersecurity, sales tax, sanctions, and artist estate planning. Annual events include the Chelsea Gallery Walk and Upper East Side Gallery Walk, which invite the public to visit member galleries after-hours to view exhibitions and attend special talks and gallery tours for free.
ADAA Relief Fund:
Established in 2012, the fund was created to support galleries and non-profit arts organizations affected by Hurricane Sandy, providing grants to help repair facilities and to encourage expedient return to operations. With a recently expanded mission, the Fund now distrib utes grants for arts institutions around the country that have been affected by natural and manmade disasters.

On March 2, 1962, six of the 22 founding members of the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) signed the certificate of incorporation to form the organization. Its primary purpose was to “promote the interests of the individuals . . . and organizations engaged in the business of dealing in works of fine arts and to improve the stature and status of the fine arts business.”
Sixty years later, this goal is still a key part of ADAA’s mission. Now with almost 200 members across 30 U.S. cities, representing thousands of artists across the globe, ADAA has become the leader in the field on issues pertaining to connoisseurship, conservation, scholarship, ethical practice, and public policy.
While many in the public may know ADAA primarily through its fair, The Art Show, held annually at the Park Avenue Armory to benefit Henry Street Settlement, ADAA works year-round to provide access to resources and information to help the small business owners that comprise membership. It also provides a platform for members, and the broader professional arts community, to engage in active dialogue on timely issues such as the rapid evolution of the art market and the growth of the arts ecology.
Six grants of $10,000 each were given to nonprofit organizations across the U.S. that support the arts in their local communities. The grantee recipients, found here, have been selected by a vote of the entire ADAA Membership. This one-time gift initiative is sepa rate from the ADAA Foundation, which was established in 1970 and annually supports fine art museums from across the country with operating budgets under five million dollars.
A group of ADAA members were interviewed to build a video archive, discussing their thoughts on what it means to be an art dealer, and what it means to be an ADAA member. An excerpt of the video can be found here. A video on the history of the formation of the organization, done in honor of the 50th anniversary, can be found here
The ADAA Relief Fund was established in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and distributed emergency grants to both member and non-member galleries and nonprofit arts organizations affected by the storm. Created through donations from member galleries as well as other individuals and institutions, the Relief Fund was expanded recently to support arts and cultural organizations affected by natural disasters across the country. The newly launched page on the ADAA website, featuring instructions as well as the application form, will now make it easier for those organizations impacted by natural disasters to apply for grant consideration.
At the forefront of ideas and innovations in the field, ADAA members spur the creative economy and contribute to the vitality of their communities. Find out more by downloading the digital version of the Directory here, listing all the members and outlining the ADAA’s various organizational arms.
For over half a century, the ADAA’s Appraisal Service has valued works of art for donation, estate, gift tax, and insurance purposes. ADAA appraisers are art historians with in-depth knowledge of the art market and extensive experience in valuing works of art. They provide a highly personalized experience, guiding collectors and museums through the complex valuation process.
A 50+ Year History of Excellence
ADAA appraisals are known throughout the art community for their professional quality. Our appraisers employ their decades of experience in the art market. Their valuations also reflect the immense depth of knowledge of the ADAA membership of esteemed and reputable art galleries.
Access to the Expertise of the ADAA Community ADAA appraisers not only review auction records, but also consult with ADAA member galleries that are most familiar with an artist’s work. Appraisers are able to reference private sales information that is often inaccessible to other appraisers, but which is an important criterion for valuation—ensuring the most accurate appraisals available.
Qualified and Knowledgeable Appraisal Staff
ADAA appraisals comply with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).
ADAA appraisers are experts in the following specialties:
• Old Master paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints
• 19th Century American and European artworks
• 20th Century American, European, and Latin American artworks
• Contemporary artworks in every medium
The ADAA Foundation, a distinct but connected entity to the ADAA, was established in 1970 to encourage and promote the appreciation of art and art history. Generously funded by donations from ADAA member galleries, the Foundation’s program of yearly grants distributes funds in support of the development of new art exhibitions, educational programming, and community engagement initiatives–including those that advance equity, access, and representation specific to our field–presented in-person and online. The work of the Foundation reflects ADAA members’ long-held commitment to furthering broad appreciation for and engagement with the full scope of the arts community.
