We were founded in 1953 by David Mellor, Royal Designer for Industry, with the simple belief that good design improves your life. Born from this inheritance of traditional metalworking skills and creative excellence, we have always combined the best of historic craftsmanship with the latest technologies. David’s son, Corin took over the company in 2006 and he remains committed to these principles.

At the heart of what we do are the iconic David Mellor cutlery designs, that have made us famous throughout the world. Corin has built on this rich heritage with new ranges, including a growing range of high-quality kitchen knives, perfectly crafted and designed to tackle every cutting, paring or slicing task you can imagine.

The David Mellor Collection includes an ever-expanding range of beautiful products that are perfect for entertaining in all its forms: fine bone china tableware, elegant glasses, wooden table and kitchen accessories, our playful range of coloured glassware and our beautifully polished stainless steel products for tea and coffee. Everything is designed by Corin and produced by carefully chosen, highly specialist manufacturers, with whom we work very closely throughout the production process; a true collaboration between designer and makers.

‘Paris’ stainless steel This is connoisseurs’ cutlery for people who appreciate fine dining and has proved phenomenally popular since it was first introduced in 1993. The design is beautifully balanced with a hollow handled knife that feels perfect in the hand.

A great number of specialist craft processes are involved in the making and this gives ‘Paris’ its perfectionist finish.

‘Provençal’ stainless steel ‘Provençal’ is exceptionally pleasant and practical to use. Its simple robust character has always appealed to those who love good cooking. ‘Provençal’ was introduced in 1975 and it is still one of our most popular designs.

Knife blades are top grade stainless steel with high carbon content, ensuring a sharp cutting edge. Handles are acetal resin with brass rivets.

A serrated steak knife and a fruit spoon – perfect size for ice cream and light desserts – are included in the range.

David Mellor ‘Rosewood’ kitchen knives Our top of the range knives, designed by Corin Mellor.

The sinuously curving handles are made from Indian rosewood, the traditional material favoured by culinary experts. These are carefully hand finished and wonderful to use.

Knife blades exploit the latest techniques in steel casting to arrive at the beautifully curved bolster. Blades are precision ground and glazed to give a specially bright finish. Drawing on our expertise in metalwork, these are amongst the world’s very finest kitchen knives.

The ‘Rosewood’ knives are exceptionally sharp.

Combining a high carbon stainless steel blade with the latest heat treatment process of ice-hardening to minus 80°c stabilises the metallurgical structure of the steel and creates a hard, durable cutting edge. The knives are taper ground at a 45° angle and each knife handle incorporates three traditional rivets in stainless steel. All knives are supplied in individual David Mellor boxes.

David Mellor ‘Black Handle’ kitchen knives Our ‘Black Handle’ stainless steel kitchen knives have been specially developed by Corin Mellor and have become enormously popular since they were first introduced.

The collection has a very distinctive modern look and high levels of performance, using the latest innovative manufacturing techniques. Ice-hardening processes make the blades exceptionally sharp. These are really professional kitchen knives, superb in quality and beautiful to use.

These are razor sharp knives. The high carbon stainless steel blades exploit the latest techniques of steel casting and are then ice hardened to minus 80ºc. This innovative process stabilises the metallurgical structure of the steel, creating an extremely hard and durable cutting edge. The knives are taper ground with the forging running down the full length of the handle. Each knife handle incorporates an internal back weight, giving an excellent balance and grip. All knives are supplied in individual David Mellor boxes.

David Mellor ‘Deco’ fine bone china More than a decade after the classic white range was launched, we have introduced a decorated range of fine bone china to bring variety and further interest to the dining table. Called ‘Deco’ in a nod to the art-deco of the 1930s that inspired it, the new pattern perfectly complements the existing range. The simple shapes and superb material are identical to the original, and its elegance is now set off by the addition of fine silver-grey radiating lines on the rimmed items. The delicate and restrained decoration means these items can be easily combined with the original pieces.

David Mellor stoneware Designed to suit today’s informal eating, our versatile range of stoneware, immaculately detailed and hand finished, has a beautifully natural feel. Its special visual quality lies in the subtle contrast between the finely textured unglazed stoneware and the smooth gloss glaze. Each piece is backstamped David Mellor. David Mellor ‘Classic’ and ‘Linear’ glass The beautiful purist shapes and added decorative elements of these uniquely designed glasses reflect Corin Mellor’s admiration for both robust English 18th century glassware and mid-20th century Scandinavian modern. NEW David Mellor ‘Column’ glass

In his design for the new ‘Column’ range of glasses, Corin Mellor has been inspired by the innovative style and colour of Kaj Franck’s glass. Deliberately heavyweight to give the glasses a more radical look and feel, they have a vivid green coloured foot, which reflects onto the base of the bowl, giving a playful coloured effect in the clear glass. The range has four different shaped glasses and the versatile champagne flutes can be used as stem vases.

‘Embassy’ collection In the early 1960s David Mellor, then a rising young silversmith, was commissioned to design an extensive range of sterling silver tableware for British embassies abroad.

Their aim was to demonstrate that Britain was now a forward-looking country with the highest standards of modern design and craftsmanship.

The resulting ‘Embassy’ Collection is tableware at its most glamorous and has become a leader within the David Mellor Collection. We have now reintroduced some of the key pieces from this famous collection of modern metalwork in mirror polish stainless steel. Each piece is made to the original design, individually hand-finished and stamped with our DM maker’s mark.

Corin Mellor has designed a beautiful range of glassware to complement the cutlery collection.

Each glass is individually hand blown in lead free crystal, and the lovely flowing forms echo the fluent lines of the original silver. Like its inspiration, the ‘Embassy’ glassware collection is becoming a classic of its time.

David Mellor ‘Rummer’ glass This range of glasses and goblets, designed

by Corin Mellor, takes its inspiration from the lovely robust character of English 18th century glassware. This is a craft-made collection, hand blown in a small specialist European workshop.

Each ‘Rummer’ glass is individually blown from molten glass and finished by hand. The glasses are made from lead-free crystal and have slight variations in their shapes and sizes, all part of their individuality and charm.

David Mellor coloured glass candle holders Our growing range of coloured glassware in iridescent colours is designed by Corin Mellor and produced exclusively for David Mellor by a family company, using traditional mouthblown techniques.

The candlesticks have a unique design, which is particularly idiosyncratic, and uses the pure, geometrical forms of modernist tradition to create something unexpected, playful and enchanting.

The collar candleholders have solid colour bases and contrasting solid colour collars, which can be interchangeable. They are designed to hold either a tealight or a tall candle.

David Mellor stainless steel peppermills Our newest salt and pepper mills have been designed by Corin Mellor as part of our stainless steel range of beautiful tableware. Their unusual, precision machined tops are a contemporary interpretation of a cog, reflecting their grinding action and our industrial design heritage. Beautifully engineered for high-definition crispness, they feature a subtle black or white band to distinguish between salt and pepper at the table. David Mellor British Standard mugs and espresso cups The British Colour Council was founded in 1931 to create a working standard for colours used by the government and industry throughout the UK. The British Standard Colour Indexes gave each colour its own name and number. We have gone back to the 1950s British Standard colours for our own contemporary collection of fine bone china mugs and newly introduced espresso cups, exclusively designed by Corin Mellor. Each mug has a wonderfully evocative period colour name and a special colour-coded back stamp.

David Mellor cast iron candleholders Our range of cast iron candleholders come in three versions and make magnificent centrepieces for any table. The fivelight candelabrum was designed in 2019 by Corin Mellor.

It’s five pivoting arms means it can be configured in a number of alternative ways. The round candleholders have removable ridged inserts to support the candles and come in a low and tall version. The serpentine candleholders are available in a three and five-candle version and come in a special gift box.

David Mellor in London and the Peak District

David Mellor Sloane Square Since July 2024 we have had a new home in Sloane Square. After 55 years, we bade farewell to our iconic store at Number 4, and moved round the corner to glorious Pavilion Road, SW3’s vibrant shopping hot spot. The new shop is a dedicated home for our own ranges of products, showcasing David and Corin Mellor’s brilliant design, and also stocks a limited edit of favourite tableware, kitchenware and British craft products from our wider range. Our full range can still be ordered in store for collection.

We’re thrilled with this latest stage of our story and look forward to making the new shop as much of a landmark as its predecessor.

Housed in an atmospheric Arts and Crafts dairy dating from 1901 it is the perfect backdrop to showcase the full David Mellor collection of our own designs, many exclusive to our own shops, alongside our extensive range of tableware, kitchenware and British crafts.

Corin Mellor designed the interior of the shop, lovingly restoring its fine period detailing: woodwork, carved lettering and decorative stonework.

The Round Building at Hathersage Our home is the village of Hathersage, in the dramatic landscape of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire.

There you can find our purpose-built cutlery factory, the Round Building, our Country Shop, Design Museum and café.

Michael Taylor pottery Michael Taylor works in rural North Devon in his purpose built workshop, Lone Ash Pottery, just outside the village of Ashwater. He studied ceramics at Bath Academy of Art.
