APOLO TORRES I have been interested in art for as long as I can recall, and not only visual arts. I would drum on my mom’s buckets and pans when I was a kid, and later I became a drummer, learned how play the guitar, and as a teenager I was really into writing. Drawing, however, was always what I did best, and was the one thing I always knew I could never quit. It was only natural that I became an artist. I never really considered any other option. I have had many different influences throughout my life. Cartoons and children’s books illustrations were the first ones, which I would try to replicate as best as I could. Then came the graffiti writers from my neighborhood, as I would sit for a long time just watching them work and wishing that one day I could do that too. Later, when I was in college I worked as an artist’s assistant and he taught me a lot about the profession, and really encouraged me to do my own works. Since then I have done three solo shows in Brazil and numerous collective shows around the world. The city has always been my biggest influence. I have always lived in São Paulo, and despite the many problems, you can still get a lot of valuable assets from the cultural exchanges that will happen whether you like it or not. I try to convey the action of time and the changes it brings, as I add numerous layers of paint on the background of my works, and merge them to represent the textures of an old wall. The recurring representation of the realistic figure does not pretend to be what it is not, and for that, the scene it never fully depicted. They are fragments of urban scenes sitting on a fragment of wall, working plans and perspective, making the pictorial surface join the rest of the figures, whether in the form of ground, sky, water, wall or even the very surface of the screen. The visualization of the full scene depends on the viewer’s imagination. The real and the imaginary need to coexist.
EMERGERE Apolo Torres, 29 years-old brasilian, with his paintings make us enter an universe where reality and fantasy coexist, making the viewer travel beyond the familiar. The water, predominant element of his earlier works, is almost totally left out: persons, at the beginning plunged in the water like a post-downpour. Now, the backdrop, the main texture is an undefined structure, a platform, an old wall from which arises...a story. The oil painting of the main characters, humans, naturals or not, shoot you in reality for their details and the work’s exactitude, the texture, the backdrop is like an universe or, better to say, a container of the told stories, at first sight it seems a worn out wall, which even thought doesn’t not aim to gain the upper hand over the story, it becomes essential and unavoidable part of it. Observing with attention we become aware of the enormous work of the artist, a mature technique, directed to create an unique and fantastic backdrop with layers and layers of colours, a Wall in which “sink into”, and then let “appear” flowers, kids and trees.
