With up to four Supreme Court seats up for grabs in the next presidential term, there’s only one thing standing in the way of potential decades of gay backslide. By Marc Paige

WHEN HILLARY CLINTON OR DONALD TRUMP IS

sworn as president, Supreme Court Justices Stephen Breyer will be 78, Anthony Kennedy will be 80, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be 83. They are three of the five justices who in 2013 granted all federal rights to married gay couples, and then ruled for nationwide marriage equality two years later. The two other justices who joined them in these rulings were both appointed to the Supreme Court by President Obama. Obama’s two terms propelled LGBT rights dramatically forward. This election will determine whether we continue this progress, or reverse it. Supreme Court decisions, whether good or bad, can be reversed. The Bowers v. Hardwick ruling of 1986, a ruling that affirmed the right of Georgia to arrest gay people for having consensual sex, was overturned in 2003 when the court deemed anti-sodomy laws unconstitutional. Could marriage equality be reversed with new Supreme Court appointments from Trump? As Sarah Palin would say, you betcha! Trump has told Fox News that he would “strongly consider” appointing judges to overturn marriage equality. He has repeatedly signaled to conservative audiences that a vote for him will be a vote for a court more hostile to marriage equality.

TRUMP HAS PLEDGED TO NOMINATE JUSTICES

in the mold of Antonin Scalia, who never missed an opportunity to deny LGBT civil rights or denigrate our humanity. Scalia was responsible for the most anti-gay invective ever heard from our highest court. In his scathing dissent in the 1996 Romer v. Evans opinion, which ruled that Colorado could not ban 20 | 10.26.16

anti-discrimination protections for gays, he compared gay people to murderers, polygamists, and animal abusers. At an appearance at Princeton University in 2012, Scalia rhetorically asked, “If we cannot have moral feelings against homosexuality, can we have it against murder?” Trump’s base is energized over the prospect of more Supreme Court justices like Scalia. They are also excited by Trump’s running mate, Governor Mike Pence of Indiana. Pence has an extensive history of political hatred toward gays. He signed Indiana’s anti-LGBT “religious liberty” law, and as a congressman, Pence proposed diverting funding from HIV/AIDS prevention to fund harmful “conversion therapy” to try and turn gay people straight.

TRUMP DOESN’T HAVE POLICY POSITIONS.

He has “policy moods” that change easily, as Slate magazine pointed out. Last spring, Trump initially voiced opposition to North Carolina’s anti-trans bathroom bill. But in typical Trump fashion, this position was short-lived. In less than 24 hours, he was agreeing with Fox News’ Sean Hannity that “local communities and states should make their own decision” whether to discriminate against LGBT Americans. Trump knows he’s not going to outright win the LGBT vote. His goal is to shave enough points off Hillary’s LGBT majority to propel him to victory in key states, and into the White House. To do this, he lies. He claims, “I’m much better for the gays” than Hillary Clinton, who vocally supports full civil rights and equality for all LGBT individuals and families. Donald Trump hopes a significant minority of LGBT voters will overlook his opposition to federal marriage equality, and his support for the right of state and local governments to enshrine discrimination against us into law, all because he uses the words “radical Islamic terrorism.” But in the United States, it is not sharia law that threatens us. It is a Trump presidency.

CATCH

‘MOONLIGHT’ New film as first gay male serious Oscar contender in years explores discovering identity against the odds in limited Atlanta run. By Elijah Sarkesian Few films released this year feel quite as essential to this particular moment in history as Moonlight. It’s a gorgeously shot, emotionally wrought exploration of its central character, Chiron, as he grows up in Miami as a black man who doesn’t fit in with those around him, both because of his general demeanor and his specific romantic and sexual interest in men. Since its premiere at Telluride earlier this year, Moonlight has received a tremendous from critics and general audiences alike. The story follows Chiron across three periods of his life: the latter days of his childhood, where he’s looked after by a drug dealer who becomes a father figure; years later in high school, where his introverted nature and damaging home life make him more of a target from bullies; and in his mid-20s, where life has pushed him into a lonely existence until he receives an unexpected phone call. The film looks at the ways different forms of identity clash and merge, and how societal pressures can impact a person. For actor Trevante Rhodes, who plays Chiron as an adult, taking on the role meant connecting to the root of who the character became by the time he’s in his 20s – someone who’s built a tough exterior to try and protect a fragile soul. “It was really understanding that this person was someone who’s incredibly tormented, someone who had a lot of self-hate because he didn’t understand who he was,” Rhodes says. “So it was about inhabiting this skin and walking around L.A. feeling like I had this disdain for myself, or this disdain for everyone else, having this secret that I had to hide from everyone. I felt like if I were to connect with someone, they would see the secret, they would see the insecurities, they would see the little boy who just wants to dance around and they would judge me for it.” Throughout Moonlight, a large root of Chiron’s insecurities come from his relationship with his mother, Paula, who has a drug problem that escalates over the course

of the film. For Naomie Harris, who plays Paula, taking on the character was a challenge – in part because it went against the type of roles she wanted for herself. “I desperately wanted to do [the film], but … I had a dilemma because here was this amazing script and amazing filmmaker, but I’ve always said that I would draw the line at playing a crack addict,” Harris says. “I really wanted to make my choices as an actor based on portraying positive images of women in general, and black women in particular, and I didn’t think a crack addict was one of them,” she continues. “So it took a conversation with Barry basically convincing me, asking me to play his mom, before I said yes.” With audiences now seeing the final product, though, both Rhodes and Harris are quick to note just how strongly audiences are responding to Moonlight. During the film’s premiere at Telluride, there was a standing ovation – plus a second standing ovation outside of the theater as the film’s talent walked out. Then came the one-on-one interactions. “People started coming up to us and sharing their experiences with the movie,” Harris says. “A 70-year-old white guy ended up crying in the arms of Barry, a black girl came up to me and was telling me about her experience. She ended up bursting into tears, and was sobbing in my arms. I’ve never been a part of a movie that moves people in this way, and I’ve been working since I was nine years old, which is 31 years doing this.”

32 | 10.26.16

Rhodes’ first experience with someone impacted by the film didn’t even involve the full film itself – just the release of Moonlight’s first trailer. “A two-minute trailer. I’ll never forget, it was literally an hour later, and I was at the gym,” he remembers. “This guy comes up to me. He’s shaking, his eyes are red, and he’s tearing up, and he tells me that this is his story, and he appreciates us for telling this story so much. And that just hit my heart, because from a two-minute trailer, an hour ago, you were affected.” For anybody debating watching the film, Rhodes has a few words of advice. “If you have any hesitance towards going to see this, then you really need to see it more than anybody,” he suggests. “If you have a friend that’s hesitant, grab them, put them in a headlock, pay for their ticket if you need to, but get them to see this movie, because this is something that literally everyone needs to see, everyone needs to understand.” Moonlight opens Friday, Oct. 28, at AMC Phipps Plaza and Landmark Midtown Art Cinema.

You’ll read that line and say, “See you on Dateline!” But the evening – home cooked steak dinner by the way – and subsequent months with them went great, filled with pleasant company and lots of laughs. Fortunately, I found a couple of gems in a city full of sharp rocks. I spent several awesome months as their boyfriend in this ‘triad’ or ‘throuple’ and faced a little confusion and misunderstanding from friends and family, as one does. TRIADS GET A BAD REP. THE MAIN questions I received were ‘Why?’ or ‘What’s their appeal?’

The

TRIAD EFFECT by Michael Chisholm

WHEN YOUR FIRST SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP AS A GAY MAN IS WITH AN ESTABLISHED MALE COUPLE, YOU LEARN A LOT AS PART OF A ‘THROUPLE’ ABOUT YOUR OPTIONS AND THE NATURE OF LOVE. UNPREDICTABLE. THAT’S THE BEST and worst word to describe the dating world, especially in gay culture. In the past few decades, the culture has risen to prominence and freely expressed its many faces. Dating and looking for the right partner or partners can be daunting especially for the ill-informed – like me. I say partners with an ‘s’ because I was a late bloomer and didn’t have my first experience with a man until 20 and didn’t enter into anything serious since high school up until this past year. This happened to be with a married couple.

My pair was adorable, settled, successful, and content, not only with each other but with the life they built together. Their best quality was their willingness to share that love and experience with a third. They grew up with an understanding of an open relationship so the concept of the third was not new to them. Anything relationship-wise was new to me, so I went for it for the fun and the experience. Over time, I realized I wanted what they created. These two men were so in tune and comfortable with each other that they invited other men to share their awesomeness. And the desire to create that of my own was what finally had us go our separate ways.

They wanted to keep me in their circle of friends and became mentors. They helped me mature in the gay culture and even these apps expose the dark and shallow un- taught me what to look for, and in turn look out for. They showed me the best that derbelly of some people. Atlanta can offer a blossoming gay man. up. It may take some self-coaching, but suck up your fears and ask, “Can I get your help with that bag?” These strangers don’t care about your issues, and they will happily assist in order to get off the plane faster. Everyone has challenges, and as long as no one is directly giving you shit about yours, forget it. If they are, be less defensive at least at the beginning. I once heard a 6’10” gay guy respond to “How’s the weather up there?” with “Put your mouth on my thermometer to find out.”

HEY,

Hey, Daddy!

Daddy!

I’m a pocket gay, but I have a giant personality. Most things I can do for myself, of course, and I get insulted when others assume I’m helpless just because I’m short. Please, guys. I can order my own drink, step out at a “Walk” light by myself, and no I’m not dying to suck you off because your crotch is at eye level.

Hey, Daddy!

I make a good enough living that my husband was able to quit his job, but he slowly stopped handling day-today stuff and now sleeps until noon. He over-reacted when I told him to find a hobby or volunteer, so how I hate to ask for help, and I hate can I facilitate change? to check everything because they He Even Leaves Piles of charge for that these days. PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 20):

This would be a lovely time to tell a partner, best pal, key player, or close collaborator how much they mean to you. Explicitly articulate your appreciation. Pursue your singleminded aims passionately, but don’t forget about the side effects on them. Address it head-on with humility and gratitude to turn resentment into support.

Choose your battles wisely. You’re swamped, and you can’t take on all at the same time, and still expect to perform at your highest competency. Follow your conscience, but recognize any righteous mission is taking priority over accomplishing those jobs-and-chores in a timely and capable manner. Which is more important to you?

Don't be afraid to speak your mind, even if it’s not likely to fix anything. You can’t deny the magnitude of the latest developments, no matter how smooth a conversational courseplotter you may be. Everything is already headed a certain direction, so why try to forestall the inevitable?

Your thoughts are heavily colored by your own subjective emotional outlook than may immediately be apparent. Don’t take the bait in a battle of wills. Should you find yourself confronted by another person's threatening insistence – even if there's really no getting around it, you can conscientiously control the quality of your own responses.

Stick to the rallying-cry of 'work hard, play hard.' You may feel pulled from one end to the other, but you won’t be satisfied if you try to solve this tension by totally championing either consideration over the other. Both work and play come to a head in the coming weeks. Use this week to further work knowing that more more social temptation is coming.

Study the details related to small adjustments or minor concessions you make to establish a position as a right-hand cohort worthy of trust. There is a danger in too heedlessly uttering such sentiments, even though they may be your ticket to a rise in income or esteem. Don’t make a concession just to nab a quick buck or a fawning endorsement.

66 | 10.26.16

The exuberance with which you express yourself is a lot for others to handle. Do it anyway. The heightened force of your self-regard could awaken resistance, but you need that level of intensity. If your inner diplomat balks, remind yourself you're fighting a big battle and now you've got the edge. Don’t settle for less than triumph.

Revel in the power of your latest creative breakthrough, but take time before trying to sell its merit to others. Let everyone else work out the kinks in their own perspectives and methods. Take this instrumental hands-off step and allow the playing field to clear itself. After that, your fresh outlook will receive a warmer welcome.

Refrain from actively publicizing or pressing your personal agenda. Instead lend your voice to a larger chorus. Adopting this group-minded flavor is essentially the flipside to recent advice, but alliances are cemented now by affirmatively articulating them. Your personal agenda can come back when everything’s in place.

Be as diplomatic in your phrasing as you can, but stop short of anything so insincere or inaccurate that it'll set off your own inner bullshit-detector. Respectfully participate in whatever protocol-dance is required. You must blend your feisty self-determination with a healthy amount of gracious courtesy to those who came before.

You're catching a more integrative, future-facing, wider-angle view of current conditions than others, but don’t get too self-satisfied about it. While you can see the components, you can't inspect the on-the-ground details. No amount of insisting, nor racking your brain for ideal solutions, can substitute for simply letting time tell.

Don't let anyone’s oversimplified thinking, bandwagon rhetoric, or bullyish pressure cause you to make ill-advised compromises. Don’t choose sides. Try to keep complicated conversations continuous and open-ended, but some people may be unable to do so. In those cases, negotiating can be a losing proposition—and a waste of breath.
