LASTING LEGEND

Fashionable confessions from a self-described ‘fat kid’ who uses clothes and style as means to build his personal brand rather than follow trends or impress anyone in the world but himself.

Every decade has its diva, and contrary to generational gay sparring over who’s best, here’s how our icons from Judy and Cher to Madonna and Gaga have more similarities than differences.

When the sex is predictable or the husbear doesn’t bring you flowers, putting the blame on him is not only lazy, it’s incorrect. Hey Daddy helps guys take responsibility for their own passion.

obsessed

The best way to be happy about your clothes is to build the brands that best suit your body, not what might be considered high fashion. I’M SHORT AND FAT, and Daniel Cremieux’s clothing is made for my build. I know what patterns and colors look good on me, and that’s also key. I hate the color pink, but I get more compliments when I wear pink than any other color. So, I have pink shirts. Color doesn’t make my comfort level, but getting complimented, does. For some reason, my big head looks good with a hat on it. So, I wear hats. I wear big goofy framed glasses, and flip flops.

FASHION

to Forge and Build, not Dress to Impress

by Tony Gowell

LISTEN, I GET IT. PEOPLE LOVE TO OBSESS OVER TRENDS, SO THAT THEY APPEAR TO OTHERS AS PUT TOGETHER AS THEY IMAGINE THEMSELVES TO BE. TIME AND TIME AGAIN, I see my fellow fat kids pouring themselves into ill-fitted clothing. It’s embarrassing. I’m hardly one to talk, as nothing at my house gets donated to Lost N Found Youth until I go up a size or fifteen years have passed, whichever happens first.

a 34” waist or larger, skinny jeans are not ever going to look good on you. You will always look like an overstuffed cupcake, exploding outwards for the world to see. Why would you do that to yourself? It doesn’t show confidence. You look uncomfortable. I know I feel terrible when clothes don’t fit me well. Stick me in a tent-sized shirt, and I’m ready to paint the town red. Stick me in a shirt too small, and I feel self-conscious, and worry all night about my stomach hanging out.

I’m not kidding, I wear my clothes until they break. So, I’m about as fashion backward as they come, and I’m completely OK with that. Do you want to know why? Because I don’t give a shit. I give zero fucks about anyone’s opinion DON’T GET IT TWISTED and confuse of my appearance. my moments of self-consciousness, as So those fat kids in ill-fitted clothing? I somehow remotely caring what other know they care. They care because what people may think of me. That’s so far they’re wearing is fashionable, expensive, from the truth. I just don’t like being unand would look amazing on the thin per- comfortable in clothing, and that bears no thoughts to others opinions. son they were designed for.

I also wear stupidly expensive cologne that smells good on me and makes me feel good. How I do that is easy. I recently joined a cologne sample subscription service called ScentBird. I load up on all the high end scents each month without paying $90 a bottle for it. I like multiple options to how I smell, as that changes like the seasons. Something so insignificant, like what kind of cologne I feel like wearing each day, is what I mean by the importance of owning your own fashion. Maybe for you, it’s collecting shoes. I have tons, and they’re all comfortable. I don’t like my feet to hurt. It’s not worth it. So I invest in neutral average looking, extremely comfortable footwear. LOOK, YOUR FASHION IS WHAT makes you...you. It’s not the trends set by others. It’s forging your look that best makes you happy, no one else. To fashion something is to build it. As you go through life, that’s what we obsess over. What can you fashion yourself with, for, and against to build the best you? What are you building that shows the world you respect yourself and makes sure it sees you the way you want to be seen.

Do yourself the favor, and be the fashion in the world. You deserve it. If others don’t To be clear, I’m not fat shaming. I’m I like feeling good in my clothing choices. like it, then fuck ‘em! ashamed at poor choices. Wear clothes People that are in clothes that frame their that fucking fit! For instance, if you have builds well look and feel happier. Cheers! 18 | 9.21.16

AN

ICON FOR EVERY ERA by Mike Fleming

TALENT. INNOVATION. BEAUTY. STANDARD-SETTING STYLE. FIRST-NAME RECOGNITION. THESE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE THINGS.

S

wing a stick in gay Atlanta – you know, like you do – and you’ll hit an intently rabid fan of one female singer or another. Often divided by generation on who should be named Head Bitch In Charge Forever, gay fans stand not-so-far apart in the qualities they like about their chosen idols. Boomers love their Judy and Barbra, Generation X-ers worship Cher and Madonna, while Milennials fancy Britney and Gaga. There’s a Pop Princess for every gay era. They’re all fiercely independent, insanely talented, ahead of their time, girl-power pioneers, and remarkably gifted at the art of reinvention. Not for nothing, they’re all also mothers, and somehow most also won the one-word name lottery. As early as the modern gay rights movement itself, gay men had their girl, belting out the defining tunes of a generation and dancing her fierce ass off while doing it. And long after her heyday and into every comeback and iteration of her celebrity, divas had their gays. Every decade has its gay icons, and while we might quibble about who else could make the list, these are our picks for a gay Period Piece of Pop Princesses. Our apologies in advance to Cass, Janet, Cyndi, Stevie, Christina, Celine, and dozens more who helped define their generation of gay fans.

JUDY

Even as the Mattachine Society and Gay Liberation Front first started tossing around the word “gay,” there was one thing activists could agree on about their fledgling movement: Judy. It is said some patrons at the Stonewall Inn in 1969 were drowning their sorrows over Judy Garland’s death when the riots broke out.

26 | 9.21.16

BARBRA

A turn on Broadway as turnof-the-20th-century gay icon Fannie Bryce changed a phenomenal voice on a funny girl into, well, Funny Girl. The movie version made her a star, and her affair with gay men was cemented soon after in a duet with, yep, Judy Garland. YouTube search it right. now.

RB ITNEY

CHER

Sassy, funny, daring, and kick-ass in a Mackie gown, some still don’t know her last name to this day, because there’s only one of this one-and-only. Half of a quirky duo became a rock goddess, a dance diva, a Vegas mainstay and the OG Comeback Kid. She’s 70 and still going, and those who came after owe her bigtime. Cher said it herself: “Follow this, you bitches.”

GAGA EB YONCE

A N N O MAD

Everything Cher got away with set the stage for a whole new level of pushing the envelope. She’s still a force to be reckoned with, no matter when in her evolution you hopped the bandwagon. From fully embraced sexuality to the redefinition of reinvention, cheers to decades more surprises!

28 | 9.21.16

Dragging some gay men kicking and screaming into the 1990s and beyond, this little vixen proved the haters wrong. Her staying power lasted far beyond the one-hit they predicted and became the go-to idol for a new gay generation who hang on every move, come to her defense in times of trouble, and to this day recreate her numbers in every venue from living rooms to YouTube.

Like many of her predecessors on this list, Lady Gaga upped the ante on what they had done and initially split gay fans with her antics. Also like them, she eventually won most of them over with talent. Of course, what places her firmly on this list is the ways in which she is unlike any who came before her. With “Perfect Illusion” just dropping as the first single from her next project, we can’t wait to see what she does next.

The former girl-bander with the big voice has grown into a one-of-a-kind performer. Her star just keeps ascending as a hitmaker and as a role model. Just as we were worried she had become overrated and too onenote, she stepped out of her peoplepleasing mode with true-to-herself material on Formation.

WHO’S NEXT? There are some candidates that may have what it takes, but we aren’t ready to make them official, at least yet … or maybe ever. Sia has had major influence, we aren’t exactly squirming in our seats for the next Katy album, and Taylor… well let’s just say we are enjoying this little break.

Talk dirty. When you’re out, tell him how badly you want him. Sneak a hand onto his crotch and tell him what you want to do. Wait for it. Getting hot and letting it simmer includes after you’re naked. Extend foreplay. Tell him where to place those kisses. Place more than a few of your own.

Kiss a little, touch a lot, roll over and stick it in. My boyfriend and I have only been dating a year, but I feel like the sex is already turning predictable. Early on, every single time was exciting, but lately I’m bored. We used to build little moments all the way up to the big moment. This took hours. Now we’re basically getting each other there so we can go to sleep. I can jack off faster – and sometimes better – by myself.

Step one is to reflect on your own fantasies. You can’t make your relationship all-new, and you wouldn’t want to start over, but you can tap into what made it hot in the first place. Whether it was the slow buildup you describe, the extra time you took, the way he smelled freshly showered for a date, or something else, there’s a lot there you can recreate time and again for years to come.

Dear NEEDY: First of all, go buy flowers if you like flowers. Then try giving them to him and tell him you were thinking of him. While you both enjoy the view, mention you used to do such things for each other.

Remain calm by sharing responsibility with somebody else who you appreciate and believe in. A collaborative attitude cultivates the relationship, while you get to play the gungho eager-beaver leader of the charge. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the electrifying productivity teamwork creates. Don’t needlessly antagonize close allies.

Stay rooted in the day-to-day where the harmoniously rhythmic meting-out of your efforts smooths off some of the rougher edges of your situation. Keep yourself grounded. Don’t short-circuit and execute a maneuver that gets their blood boiling. Don’t disrupt the rhythmic flow. Even if you feel like ‘getting into it,’ don’t waste your time.

Blaze a trail of fun, flirtation and other light-hearted activities. Give whoever you’ve chosen to join you clear indicators of what makes you grin and giggle. Don’t make them read between the lines and then getting annoyed when they don’t catch your hint. Don’t broach weightier matters this week. Hold off while deciding which details are important.

An overcrammed schedule could create interpersonal inattentiveness if you’re not present while trying to talk with someone. Goofs are likely when your mind is somewhere other than where your body’s located. Do what you’re doing while you’re doing it, be with whoever while you’re with them, and don’t muddle the two.

Do the dance rather than storming the floor and stomping on others’ toes. There’s a beautiful rhythmic cadence to ‘lead, then follow; follow, then lead’ that’ll craft a seductive moodsetting tune, the perfect background music for sweet-talking any companion into syncing up with your groove. Ease it in to receive an accommodating welcome.

Properly discern one life-sector from another. If you lash out to ensure your feelings are respected, direct your vehemence toward the correct person(s) in the right setting. If venting merely releases smoke without actually changing anything, you’re wasting your time. Only pick a fight that can free you, not entangle you further.

No important discussions. Navigate through social pleasantries with relative unremarkableness. Crack jokes and keep it general, or fall safely back on demonstrations of overt interest in whatever they are saying. Not making an impression is actually a victory. Plenty of other folks would kill to enjoy such an unremarkable week.

Work to progress without frantically focusing on perceivable external results yet. Don’t erroneously convince yourself that no promising developments are occurring. They’re merely incubating in a pre-manifest holding-tank. Think of this week as a microcosm crash-course in working for the future on faith.

Put yourself out there and remember the value of having your buddies and teammates along for the show. Celebrate you for who you are but trust compatriots to keep an eye on you and avoid trouble. Take their word for it if they tell you you’re going ‘too far’ or being ‘too much’ … and accept their recommendations.

Keep up appearances and avoid devilish deeds or escapist evasions. Tap into the meticulously prudent, no-seamsshowing side of your personality. Throw others off the scent of what your gears are really grinding and give yourself psychic space to let ‘em grind. Use your appearance-keeping skills to keep from striking out if cornered.

You may delight in behaving a bit more like a live wire, provided there’s a logic to your provocative pokes and prods. If you feel moved to take the piss out of someone, then let there be a point to it. This is not an invitation to ‘be mean.’ Present important concepts, stay cool-and-collected in your ideas, and don’t attack them for being them.

Dwell in the not-knowingness alongside other people, each of you holding a piece of the puzzle but nobody in full possession or total control. Uncertainty provokes anxiety, but you have to bear it long enough to yield dividends. Stay in this hot kitchen with other chefs – professionally, financially, creatively, romantically or psychologically.

Honey, he already knew that I have had more ATL dick in me in 90 days than any ATL natives had in a lifetime, why do you think he is with me and not your basic ass?

Can I please get one man with minimal issues and an extraordinary penis, instead of vice versa?

No thanks. I already saw your limp spotty dick the last time you were drunk at this bar.

Attention’Supporters.’ If you don't have direct knowledge of the scandalized organization other than who ‘seems nice,’ STFU!

I never, ever hook up, but I’ll make an exception for you. #whateverbish

The word ‘community’ is people of like minds or in the same neighborhood. We ain’t that, hoes.

Gawd bless the man that’s got his own, honey. Can I get an amen?!
