The Wussy party people are back, this time with RPDR’s Tammie Brown at the helm. DJs Ree De La Vega and College Lesbian spin the queer femmes, drag queens and all other comers as you serve all the ‘90s Workout’ you can muster in a look that rocks the theme.

Atlanta Team Tennis hosts the annual convergence of gay servers and volleyers in this official circuit event of the Gay & Lesbian Tennis Association. Four days of parties and play make for fun and prizes in singles, doubles, mixed doubles, plus social events, dinners, and more.

DECATUR BOOK FESTIVAL

BRUT

BLACK GAY PRIDE & DRAGON CON

One of the biggest events in town over Labor Day Weekend is this celebration of all things literary. And where would any event be without its gays? Nowhere, that’s where. Look for a slew of gay and allied authors in a Who’s Who lineup of literati, including Jericho Brown and Libby Ware.

No work on Monday means the New York crew that spreads its semiregular party love over the Dirty South returns. DJ Masters pumps Underground House beats with you in leather and fetish gear. As always, they promise a “dark energy, red-hot crowd and infectious sexy sounds.”

Labor Day in gay Atlanta means a plethora of options, and they always includes these two behemoth series of events. Sci-fi fans head downtown, and queers of color hit the largest celebration of its kind in events all over town. Keep flipping pages for our previews of both in this issue.

Friday, Sept. 2 – Sunday, Sept. 4 • Downtown Decatur Square • decaturbookfestival.com

Sunday, Sept. 4, 9 p.m. • Heretic • 20169 Cheshire Bridge Road NE Sept. 2 – Sept. 5 • Hyatt Regency Atlanta • • hereticatlanta.com dragoncon.org

Also on Friday night, Atlanta kicks off Dragon Con with an amazing EDM concert at Philips Arena. Called Sound Circus, their lineup is sure to include GTA, Party Favor, Robert DeLong, Sick Puppies, and Starbenders. Not to be outdone, Saturday Sept, 3, brings David Atlanta’s own DJ Marc J Cubs spinning the night away for Dragon Con’s annual Night at the Aquarium, featuring the Chôsen costume contest and dance party. Can’t make it? No worries. He’s also spinning on Friday night at Dragon Con’s annual Zombie Prom. He will definitely make sure all that dead flesh jumps in dreadfully ghastly ways! Seriously, he’s the best DJ in Atlanta, hands down… and he gets me the most amazing birthday presents, so I might be biased.

CELEBRATING 30 FANTASTIC YEARS IN ATLANTA, IT'S EASY TO SEE WHY 70,000 POP CULTURE AND MULTI-MEDIA OBSESSED FANS ARE IN LOVE WITH DRAGON CON.

WHAT MAKES THIS YEAR’S EVENT at the Georgia Aquarium even more spectacular is one of the world’s most famous cosplayers, Riddle, as co-host. She’s joined at the helm by 1980s mainstay actor Judge Reinhold, of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Beverly Hills Cop, Gremlins, and The Santa Clause. Sunday night’s annual Masquerade Contest keeps up the pace at Dragon Con. It’s hosted by none other than *NSYNC’s Joey Fatone. He’s a comedian in his own right, and quite woofy to look at, so you know it’s going to be a packed house. As for me, one of my jobs for Dragon Con is that of panel moderator. On the surface, it seems like a really easy gig: I meet a celebrity, handle fan Q&A, and that’s it, right?

As a year-round member of the Dragon Con staff, I’m excited that the 30th anniversary of the event will soon unveil plenty of cool surprises for fans. There’ll be over 400 (!) celebrity guests from our favorite film and television shows on hand signing autographs and answering Q&As during tons of panels. In addition to that, they’ll be at several off-site events that Dragon Con is hosting as well.

Their comments included the importance of transgender actors and actresses being accessible to fans through entertainment, and the joys of working with Academy Award winning leading actresses.

There are a billion stories like that, and I have some really great panels lined up this year. There are tons of GLBTQ related panels, guests and events, too. Most recently, having the LGBT Institute become a gathering place for the LGBT community and a refuge for dialogue in a year filled with LGBT human and civil rights successes and struggles has been inspiring. Knowing that the Institute will continue to respond as a convener for important discussions and a catalyst for action gives me courage and hope. What is the Institute currently working on?

David Hero:

HEROES COME IN ALL FORMS. THEY MAY CROSS OUR PATHS WHEN WE LEAST EXPECT IT, OR WHEN WE DON’T EVEN REALIZE IT’S HAPPENING.

M

eet Ryan Roemerman, the 33-year-old activist who serves as the Executive Director of the LGBT Institute at the National Center for Civil & Human Rights. Having only moved to the Atlanta area in the past two years, this easy-going leader has made strides for and within the LGBT community. In honor of his hard work, Roemerman sheds light on the latest from LGBT Institute, while discussing his personal motivation for his determined efforts. Here’s why he was an easy choice to be named this month’s David Atlanta Hero.

What exactly is the LGBT Institute? It’s the internal home and dedicated platform at the Center for Civil & Human Rights to explore critical issues to advance LGBT rights. The idea was developed by Brian Tolleson, and I was brought on board to turn the concept into a reality. We launched in September of last year, so we’re celebrating our one year anniversary. 20 | 8.31.16

We’re planning for our first Symposium for November 18-20, where we’ll be connecting academics and advocates around a host of issues like public health, education and criminal justice. We’re also preparing to launch our 14-state Southern Survey to gain a better understanding of LGBT people’s lives and their needs. This data will be extremely important to our non-profit partners throughout the South as they work to advance LGBT rights. Do you work with any other local organizations? I serve on the AIDS Fund Committee (a collaboration between United Way and the Community Foundation), and on the Programming Committee of Youth Spark.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW IN ONE SUPER GEEKY, SUPER GAY 2016 GUIDE TO DRAGON CON WEEKEND IN ATLANTA

T

his year marks the 30th anniversary of the geeky goodness of Dragon Con. It’s everything we love about science fiction, fantasy, comics, gaming, entertainment and over-the-top cosplay. As a bonus, there are thousands of fun loving patrons and some of them look flawless AF in that 300 costume.

The Basics Dragon Con festivities run Sept. 2-5 and feature more than 5000 hours of programming spanning 7 venues in Downtown Atlanta. Events, panels, workshops and parties start as early as 9 a.m. then run through the night and into the early hours of the morning.

With over 70,000 members and 2200 volunteers, the magnitude of Dragon Con can be overwhelming. If you’re going to own the weekend as a ‘Con’ man, you need to plan accordingly, and we’ve got you covered.

Take MARTA to Peachtree Center Station. From there, you can easily navigate each element of the convention. You’ll move between the downtown Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, Sheraton and Westin hotels, plus AmericasMart buildings 1 & 2.

Dragon Con Getting In There’s a common misconception that you can just “show up” to Dragon Con and hunky Spartan daddies will just magically spring forth for your Instagraming pleasures. Listen closely, boys: That’s not how it works. To enjoy Dragon Con, even if it’s just for the visual delights, you need to purchase a membership. Your badge is your key to every corner of the geeky-gay universe. Without it, you

Gay Offerings David Atlanta’s own DJ Marc J Cubs spins the Zombie Prom at the Sheraton on Friday night. He’s also the special guest spinning at the costume contest on Saturday at Georgia Aquarium. Obsessed columnist Tony Gowell, a year-round Dragon Con staffer, moderates several panels over the weekend, including Daredevil ’s Charlie Cox, the cast of Scyfy Channel’s Dark Matter, X-Files and Hannibal ’s own Gillian Anderson, Doctor Who and Arrow’s Alex Kingston, Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy star Karen Gillian, Harry Potter’s Jason Isaacs aka Lucious Malfoy, the cast of Game of Thrones, Gotham, Sleepy Hollow, and a candid interview with members of the boy band *NSYNC. The Spectrum Party celebrates LGBTQ Geeks & Allies in the Hilton Grand Salon West, Saturday from 10pm-2am. The Dragon Con Parade kicks off at 10am at the intersection of Peachtree Street & Linden Avenue. This is probably one of the most fun ways to spend an hour on a Saturday morning. It’s also where you’ll see that contingent of the 300 Spartans, so go early to get a good view!

26 | 8.31.16

Rules of the Road 1. Don’t Be a Dick. The Dragon Con crew takes this very seriously. They’ve worked hard to create a fun, safe event, and they intend to keep it that way. Remember, everyone working the event is a volunteer, so be kind! Touching without consent is never OK. Always ask and be accepting of hearing “no.” Besides the general need to respect personal space, no one spent months sewing, gluing, and constructing a costume to have a bunch of randos messing with their work.

No matter how badly you want to see Chris Kirkpatrick of your Dirty Pop dreams, the people ahead of you were thirstier and worked harder for it. You just have to be a good sport in those scenarios. 3. Do Something New. It’s easy to get caught up in people-watching, but don’t miss out on the organized programming. There’s a full slate of celebrity panels, unique parties, as well as games and book series to be discovered. For a full listing, check out the website or app

Dragon Con goes down Sept. 2-5 2. You’ll Wait in Line & You’ll Be OK. downtown. Visit dragoncon.org. Of the 70,000 people at Dragon Con, there’s a good chance some of them want to see the same things you do. If there’s an event or session that you really want to see, you can line up outside up to an hour early.

SAY IT LOUD:

BLACK & PROUD. by Mike Fleming

ANNUAL BLACK GAY PRIDE ATLANTA BRINGS NEARLY A WEEK OF REVERENCE AND REVELRY TO VENUES ALL OVER TOWN

W

hen you’re the black gay Mecca of the Southeast, it’s only natural that you host the largest celebration of LGBTs of color in the nation. That’s how you rack up 30 years of events that keep coming back for more every Labor Day Weekend.

Thousands of residents and visitors descend on clubs, performance venues and hotel ballrooms all the way from Wednesday, Aug. 31 through Monday, Sept. 5. Events span from serious to celebratory, from community organizers to party promoters, and from offbeat entertainers and DJs to big-name celebrity guests. Look for events from In the Life Atlanta, Traxx & Pure Heat, Rockstars Production, Wassup N ATL and more. They promise appearances by Teyana Taylor, Carol B., and the Love & Hip Hop Atlanta girls Tommie Lee, Trina, Queen Sheba, June’s Diary, Towanda Braxton, Mimi Faust, Karlie Redd and Ariane Davis, to name but a precious few. The real stars of Black Gay Pride though are the people. Out in force and loud and proud, they are living the life that makes the event worthwhile, and doing the work that makes it relevant. And they’re going to be busy, from the opening gala at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights on Thursday, Sept. 1, all the way through to the White Party at Enigma at 10 p.m. on Monday. Here are our Best-Bet Highlights of events from dozens and dozens (and dozens!) of options. Check out the listed websites for more events each day from these organizers.

Not Another Pretty Face

EBERT IVORY

by Chris Vizzini

REJECTION LEADS LOCALS TO BUILD A THRIVING LOCAL AGENCY FOR ATYPICAL MODELS WITH OFFBEAT BEAUTY.

A

tlanta gay man Elbert Ivory tried to be a model for years but was met with a rejection rate of 100% – not because he didn’t have the look. In fact, he was told repeatedly he did have the look but lacked one key element.

He was short. Elbert comes in at exactly 5 feet tall. Discouraged, but not defeated, Ivory finally saw an opportunity in an open call for models of all sizes. After years of rejection, he saw a way in. He had his walk, posing technique down and was ready to work it. Once he hit the the casting call, his hopes were dashed as he saw the casting agents look at him, then drop their heads to their cell phones. At that moment, he’d had enough. “It lit a fire under my butt,” Ivory tells David Atlanta. “If no agency or fashion show wants me, I’m going to create my own agency.” Ivory was a student at Georgia State at the time, so he started small. “I took in models of all shapes and sizes who were also students at Georgia State, and I helped them build portfolios by shooting them on campus. It was a lot of fun, but I wanted to take it further.” He worked from his garage with non-traditional models by mentoring and educating them about the industry. They all had the common goal to break barriers in the fashion industry. photos: Courtesy EI Model Management 32 | 8.31.16

KATE BUNCH, RIED JONES & SHANNON BYRD

“I wanted to be a beacon of hope for models of every shape, size and age,” he remembers. That hope was the seed that blossomed into Ivory’s agency, EI Model Management. “Though the client might be looking for a model that’s a 5’8” and a size 3, we send out a digital package of a model’s portfolio who has strong beautiful features, but they may be a bit short or they may be a couple sizes bigger,” He says. “Believe it or not, the clients are willing to make adjustments for an exceptional model.” It’s not all about experience either. Personality is what books models, Ivory says. “You can’t just have the look,” he explains. “You have to have phenomenal outgoing personality because that’s what will get you booked over and over.” His point was made the moment EI model Kate Bunch walked into the room. Being in her presence is like watching the lighting of the Macy’s Christmas Tree. Bunch is 5’4”, but her look, outstanding personality and professionalism keeps her booked. “Honestly, it starts at the casting call,” Bunch says. “You walk in and everyone is taller than you and you have to bring the personality and the vibe. You have to work so much harder than the other models who are 5’8”, because they have it easier in having the perfect model build.” Is there a negative side to working in an industry when you don’t fit the mold? Ivory discovery Shannon Byrd was quick to point out that you have to have a thick skin. She is 5’10” but a size 8 in a world that wants a 4 for runway. “I’ve been in a fashion show and been denied food” to fit into her garment, she says. “I could see all the skinny girls getting their food.” And what about the boys? Ask EI model Reid Jones, who is 5’8”. “I don’t let something like my height stop me, because that’s something that’s fueled by the agency,” he says. “The agency helped me to not put emphasis on height but rather my ability to model.” Ivory and EI have come a long way since the days of working from his garage. His office is now firmly seated within The Hurt Building downtown, but his mission to create change has only scratched the surface. He wants even more diversity. If you have a unique look but don’t feel “model worthy” because of your size, shape or age, scrap that notion and reach out to him. Ivory is always looking to broaden the scope of who he represents. TRANS ATLANTA PERFORMER ALISSAH BROOKS GETS DIRTY WITH DEBUT SINGLE ‘DOPE SHIT’

A staple

of Atlanta’s legendary House of Brooks, aspiring popstar, actress and drag show performer Alissah Brooks is on the fast track to super stardom. Rising from a 16-year-old ingénue on the scene to a fullfledged powerhouse, Brooks has already conquered more in her young life than most. Now the dynamite diva is set to release her debut solo single, “Dope Shit” on Sept. 2. A total club-banger, “Dope Shit” is quite the statement as Brooks’ introduction as a transgender artist to the music industry. Twisting a well known lyric with “Super-callafragalistic-expi-alla-Dope Shit,” the song combines the singer’s immense talent with her sassy persona and a naughty side for a sound that’s all her own. Taking time from a jam-packed schedule of appearances and promos, the songstress gave David Atlanta the complete skinny on her new sure-fire hit, life as a House of Brooks daughter, and what we can expect as she rockets forward in her career.

Rather than confront him, consider telling him how it made you feel, and asking him how that realization makes him feel? My money is on him not being a monster. People are perfectly capable of holding two conflicting feelings at the same time: The pain of the lost friend, the joy of the marriage, and the clumsy coincidence of it being born from tragedy.

HEY,

Daddy! Hey, Daddy! It’s been five years since a friend in our tightknit little gay circle committed suicide. Apparently, it takes a tragedy like that to show who your real friends are.

Only make a fuss if you’re convinced a central issue is headed the wrong way, and that a radical blow-the-cover-off intervention is essential. If so, do something, but don’t quibble over small stuff. If you’re pretty sure you’re on the right road, not counting normal doubts or anxieties, keep working out practical details, one tasklist item at a time.

Don’t lie down or roll over in power-struggles that could jeopardize your feeling genuine pride in what’s being birthed. Of course, letting it utterly dominate would only siphon your energy. Which standoffs are important enough to insist on winning? Discern your biggest non-negotiables from more modest compromises and adjustments.

Acknowledge the specific factors for a self-nurturing home atmosphere. You can handily ‘tidy up’ the domestic landscape, but you also need unfaltering relationship judgment calls. Your most significant partnership(s) is at a critical junction that requires cut-and-dry determination. There’s less gray in this black-and-white showdown than you realize.

Revel in the company of others. At every instance you could choose between keeping to yourself or including somebody else, take the social option. This interactive orientation will expose you to a wider field of possibilities for gain. It’ll also help your dedication to work. Yes, you have a lot of business to handle—but that’s not all there is.

Fastidiously collect on practical gains you’ve earned. If you focus too insistently on ins-and-outs, you miss a golden chance to leverage what you’ve worked this hard to merit. There’s nothing more attractive than someone who handles their own business like a boss and purchase the freedom to do as they wish without threatening their bottom-line.

It’s your ‘can-do’ moment. You can do it if you believe. You can grow your life bigger than it’s ever been without giving up all the things you already like about it. You must take a leap-of-faith and drop studied inspections of costs and benefits. Be more scared of not growing before bowing to selfincurred restrictions that’d keep you frozen in place.

Astrobarry.com by Barry Perlman.

Your time is coming. Don’t attempt too much noteworthy— other than continuing your backstage preparations—during these final expectant moments in the holding-tank. However, all forms of magical seed-planting, gratitude-offering and private metaphysical deeds are strongly encouraged. Don’t offer overly strong opinions.

Offer a leg-up to peers who’d benefit from your generosity. Do favors, share connections and give practically-minded pep-talks as a means to receive similar blessings later. It shows confidence to help others without feeling their success somehow endangers yours, so giving of yourself actually gives you a competitive edge.

Take a good look around. It’s no fluke of fate. You made this happen. This snapshot of your life is the cumulative result of these past- months’ efforts. If you’re happy with it, bank the esteem as a firm foundation. If not, swallow the realitycheck medicine, not as discouragement, but as an instructive map of where you fell short.

The path ahead is free of major obstacles. The biggest potential obstruction would be your refusal to leave the past behind. Harboring outdated fears is understandable, but allowing them to freeze you in your tracks would be a shameful failure. Why would the same thing happen the same way all over again? It wouldn’t.

Work out intricate collaborative undertakings, complex financial arrangements or touchy interpersonal dynamics. Concentrate more on the interactive process than on any outcome you’ve presupposed to be the best. If you want to save a troubled alliance, engage directly. Your way forward might be simpler than you think.

To make the most effective impression on those who could open (or shut) doors, you have many complex considerations to juggle concurrently. Don’t brashly pick a fight with any mentors, elders, or higher-ups. Talk out the options, opportunities, and obstacles with your trustiest peeps to capitalize on favorable relationship mojo.
