DINE OUT FOR PRIDE

808 FEST

She’s about so much more than that bass. Help the curvy chanteuse say “No” and “Me Too” as she heats up already hot Atlanta. The former Atlanta Pride performer keeps racking up the hits, and now she returns with a concert full of all the songs that make her so popular in pop.

When does pizza not sound good, right? Well, we can make it sound even better. All the bread-y, sauce-y goodness you love gets its ante upped when 20% of your tab of pies and calzones goes to Atlanta Pride. It’s just another awesome way that you can do good and eat good in the gayborhood.

A celebration of bass hits town with four days of deep beats. Headliners include DJ Earl, HXV, Mighty High and Plastician (photo), but the long weekend features two-dozen more acts. Look for full lineups on Friday at the Music Room, Saturday at Opera, Sunday at Alley Cat, and Monday ta Aisle 5. Read our preview in this issue.

BUCKS RUGBY 101

HSL SEASON WRAP PARTIES

What’s a single gal to do in the big city when half of her wants to chase her dreams, and the other half wants to nail down a career? Both, baby! The Broadway smash comes to Atlanta to live out all her options with queer Rent veteran Anthony Rapp as the best friend.

If you love the idea of gay rugby but were afraid to walk on as a newbie, fear no more. Most of the Atlanta Bucks were new to the game when they started, so these season-starting trainings go over the skills and rules you’ll need. Third half soclializing afterward. Check out our interview in this issue.

The only thing Hotlanta Softball League does as well as play ball is beer busts. So what better way to bid the season adieu than not one but two more parties? Both serve as sendoffs to the Gay Softball World Series for the local teams competing.

back.” That’s a huge turn off. Len wasn’t like that in the least. He was genuinely interested. We set a lunch date for the next day. I was looking forward to meeting him. The next morning at 9:30 a.m., he texted that he’d reviewed the previous day’s texts and didn’t think we were a good fit. I checked and nothing noteworthy was said. Something just didn’t add up. People don’t go from that kind of interest in meeting then flip the script within 12 hours.

Wearing the Gay Scarlet Letter by Chris Vizzini

EXPERIMENT BEGAN AS A WAY TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE DYNAMICS OF DATING, BUT IT’S HARD TO EVEN GET STARTED, MUCH LESS COMPETE WITH YOUR FORMER SELF.

WAS ARMED WITH SAGE ADVICE from a gay match maker to first become the best person I could muster. Check, but after a longterm relationship, going back to school and getting sober, six years had gone by.

inner beings would win Medusa pageants, and vice versa. For me, it’s the intangibly magic vibration you feel from someone that signals something might be happening. I’ve learned to listen for it to play from the soul of my date.

Last month was the one-year anniversary of making the choice to live healthier and remove malignancies from my life. I also evaluated my weak dating points and sorted them out. I felt ready to hit the rainbow road to romance.

ORIGINALLY I WAS GOING TO WRITE about some of the nutbags, good guys and friends I met on match.com with the hopes of bringing the story home with finding love, but as with any recipe, a few degrees off can change the flavor drastically.

The matchmaker’s second piece of advice was to join match.com. I received a ridiculous number of winks and messages. I have no idea why. Maybe Venus was just on my side.

Instead, I want to tell you about just one. Len and I spoke on match for a couple of weeks then switched over to texting for a few days. He seemed different – endearing, sweet and honest. He didn’t make one I don’t choose men based on just looks. sexual innuendo, which I really appreciI’ve dated very attractive guys whose ate. It’s lazy to say, “Hi, you’re hot. Hit me 18 | 8.3.16

I looked Len up on Facebook and found the missing link. His best friend, Jack, owns the condo unit beneath mine. That means Jack was audibly privy to the late night parties I used to have. On a number of occasions, he knocked on the door in the middle of the night to tell us to keep it down. He had every right to be pissed. I asked Len why his sudden change of heart. He never responded. Being best friends, I’m taking an educated guess that Len showed Jack my picture and mentioned the date. We can all figure out how that went down. It certainly makes more sense than a complete change of heart in less than half a day after weeks of chatting. THE PERSON JACK BARELY KNEW isn’t here anymore. I haven’t even seen him in four or five years. He moved in with a boyfriend about a year after I bought my condo. Yes, I fucked up back then, but you know what’s great about being a human being? We do change. We do evolve. We do finally break harmful patterns and do the work to get to a better place. It was incredibly irresponsible for Jack to speak with an uninformed tongue. I worked my ass off to be the better person I am today. I take ownership of my past, but I will not wear a scarlet letter forever. I’ve seen this happen dozens of times to people whose lives are effected by gossip or dated information. What’s the moral of this story? Unless you know exactly what you are talking about, shut your gob. As for Len, it could have been something real or it could have been nothing at all. We’ll never know. Words, correct or incorrect, are powerful. Use them wisely.

ALT ATL

by James Sheffield

GROUPS OFF GAY ATLANTA’S BEATEN DRAG-DJ-DRINKS PATH OFFER SOMETHING FOR QUEENS OF DIFFERENT SCENES Atlanta has a rich history of activism, culture and art. For decades, gays have shaped the city by finding ways to get involved without getting bored. Even before Stonewall, gay Atlantans were organizing and creating safe spaces for community. When you partner queer ingenuity with southern charm and style, the results speak for themselves. The gay underground club scene, arts community and grassroots organizers throughout the decades have left behind a remarkable legacy, including one of the most vibrant gay bar scenes in the country, world renowned drag queens and entertainers, and a bounty of service and social organizations. It’s undeniable that gay life in Atlanta has its own special flair, which is kept fresh by the formation of new groups and events around town, as well as our willingness to step out of the mainstream. If there is one thing that there is no shortage of in Atlanta, it’s gays who aren’t afraid to set trends or create an alternative. All of our gay Atlanta establishments have a history of emerging from the fringe; small groups of people determined to create social change or a social experience. Before the Atlanta Pride Parade was filled with floats and dancing boys, a small group of activists marched through streets with bags over their heads. Before RuPaul was recording house music hits and crowning queens on national television, she was finding the fringe with other Atlanta-based queer creative types. Before Lost-N-Found Youth was running a thrift store and renovating a house in Midtown, a handful of gay men put together a network of couches and hotel rooms to help homeless youth. 22 | 8.3.16

So what are today’s alternatives? What groups and activities step-out of the traditional bar and brunch scene and show us something different? Whether it’s just for fun or to create change, here’s a sample of some of Gay ATL’s current offerings:

Southern Fried Queer Pride In the spirit of Stonewall and ACT UP, this group of alternativepride producers is dedicated to exploring the political and creative side of queer identities. You can participate in a variety of events throughout the year, including an annual festival during the last week of June. Expect everything from bands to movie screenings and speakers to social justice rallies. Keep an eye on their website for details on their first ever queer film festival, which launches this September. southernfriedqueerpride.com

Wilderness Network of Georgia Gay & Bi men who want to get dirty in the great outdoors, look no further. Wilderness Network of Georgia has a variety of offerings, including camping, hiking, biking, and caving. There’s no skill level requirement to participate, so jump in whenever you’re ready. Visit their Meetup page for a full calendar of events and info on how to get involved. meetup.com/wildnetga

Hotlanta Rubber Group It’s not an uncommon sentiment for us to recognize our gay bars as more than “just bars.” They are places that create a sense of community, while also allowing for a variety of self-expression. The Atlanta Eagle is host to the Hotlanta Rubber Group, a monthly bar night that provides a safe space for those interested in rubber, latex, neoprene, and other gear & apparel of that nature. Enjoy the festivities on the second Friday of each month by becoming joining the club. Membership is free and you can access the application here. atlantaeagle. com/the-hotlanta-rubber-group OutWorlders Are you a closeted Trekkie? Going stir crazy waiting for that new Game of Thrones book? Having trouble finding a friend to watch scary movies with? Desperate to discuss cosplay options for Dragon Con? OutWorlders is there for you. LGBT sci-fi, fantasy, and horror junkies can get their fix through a variety of events throughout the year. There’s no fee to join, simply show up to any of the events listed on the OutWorlders site. outworlders.info or facebook.com/groups/outworlders Gay Gamers of Atlanta This group of fun loving gays has your board game, card game, and trivia needs covered. The last Saturday of every month they take over the Rush Center for a potluck and evening of gaming. Everyone is encouraged to bring a dish to share and a $5 donation, but all are welcome, even if you only bring yourself. Rumor has it that a few love connections have been made at this monthly outing. We can’t guarantee you’ll get a date, but to be safe, we recommend keeping your competitive side balanced with some southern hospitality. You can find the Gay Gamers of Atlanta on their Meetup page. meetup.com/GayGamers For more Alt ATL groups check out davidatlanta.com 24 | 8.3.16

Rough & ready for Rugby by Mike Fleming

ATLANTA BUCKS KICK OFF FALL WITH A BASICS TRAINING FOR ALL COMERS AT EVERY SKILL LEVEL.

I

f it wasn’t enough that a bunch of burly boys will be scrumming, rucking, engaging and tackling in public view for all to see, they’re also giving you a chance to get in on the action.

On Saturday, Aug. 6, the squad’s semi-regular Rugby 101 takes place to teach newbies the basics and help veterans shake off the rust and polish their skills. The best part? No previous rugby experience required. “What I love about the Bucks Rugby 101 event is that anyone is welcome,” says Tom Paris, president of the Bucks. “If you’re looking for a new sport or to start one for the first time, to come lend a hand off the field, or even to just watch and cheer, this is a great opportunity to come out and meet the Bucks. “We have a place for you,” he adds. “There’s no such things as too big, or too small. Rugby players come in all sizes, shapes and ages.” It’s that welcoming spirit, as well as a dedication to community philanthropy and a palpable camaraderie among the guys, that earned the entire team honors as one of our monthly David Heroes earlier this year. When it comes to Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club, the local gay squad with the hearts of gold, there’s so much more than rugby when the guys leave the pitch (That’s rugby for ‘field of play.’). “We frequently spend time together outside of practices, hanging out, volunteering, traveling, drinking and more,” Paris says. “You build a bond when you know someone has your back.

Practices start each Tuesday and Thurday in August at Toomer Elementary School, and the fll season of matchups kicks off in September. The season wraps the week before Halloween at the annual Ruck-a-Buck Invitational, where teams from all parts descend on Atlanta for a tournament to crown a champion. The team also mans a tip-fundraising bar at the Eagle every Third Saturday of the month. They also set aside time to volunteer and give back. PLASTICIAN

808 FEST BEATS DOWN ATLANTA by Mike Fleming

DRUM MACHINES AND DISTURBING THE PEACE INSPIRE A FOUR-DAY, MULTI-VENUE, MULTI-GENRE ATLANTA JAM THAT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASS.

W

hen you think of deep beats and the Atlanta music scene, you may just think that the 808 is simply twice as good as the 404. Well, that may or may not be the case, but the 808 Fest actually gets its name from two dovetailing inspirations gay bass fans are going to love. One of the earliest and most popular drum machines was called the TR-808. Made by the Roland Company, the machine serves as muse and motivation to the three-dozen acts taking over Edgewood and Midtown Aug. 5-8. Whether the machine itself was named for the 808 police ordinance number for disturbing the peace, it certainly has drawn its fair share of law enforcement attention.

Hip-Hop group Mighty High Coup has gotten bigger. Way bigger. Last year’s noon-to-3 a.m. all-day throwdown was epic, but now there’s room for even more. “808 Fest has grown to four days and will be held in four different venues,” Rothstein tells the ATL Business Chronicle. “This year we are proud to bring the celebration of all things bass to The Music Room, Opera Nightclub, Alley Cat Music Club and Aisle 5.” As you may have guessed by now, the thread that ties the nights together is liberal use of the 808 and its drum-machine brethren.

This year, that means acts like the legendary DJ Earl of Teklife, who headlines Friday at the Music Room. The show will also stage fest founders Mighty High Coup, Taste Tester, No Eyes, Wake, Capeeton Mudfish and Garrett Wheeler. Can’t make it Kelis fans may recall the lyric, “I’m back with a 808 ‘cause I’m on Friday? No worries. Three more nights can beat you into submission. bossy,” or Blaque spitting “We be going boom like an 808.” Now you know. 808 Fest is where Atlanta gets its Saturday, Aug. 6, brings HXV and Kilo Ali – last year’s top bill boom-boom-boom. affectionately known as Atlanta’s Godfather of Bass – to Opera. Here in the heart of Midtown where they’re used to beats that What started five years ago as a show of beats under the watch- don’t stop until the break, gays can get a headful of Ali’s singular ful eye of Atlanta’s own Ricky Raw, nee Ricky Rothstein, of the heavy-hitting beats, as well as those of Jelly and Sofa King. 36 | 8.3.16

But do rest up. The Alley Cat plays host to 808 Fest on Sunday, with a dozen acts of its own. Look for Section 8, KVBM, Lil Bear, Vandal Rose, Frank Mayson, Personal Trainer DJ, Young Deaux, J Padron + Friends, Lil Tude, High Kaillber, Joshua Dispain, Majik City Junglists and more. And just because the weekend ends doesn’t mean that the 808 is through. Far from it. If staying up on a school night was ever worth it, and you know it so was, Monday, Aug. 8 is it. That’s when nationally beloved baby daddy by day, beatmaster by night Plastician takes over the decks at Aisle 5. He’s not the only one helping you keep the beat on Monday. Stick around for Trillitary (a combination of Clerks, McBeezy and Paul Swytch), as well as Juju Beats and Double Nil for a closing night you won’t soon forget. Sometimes called UK Bass because of several cross-over hits in Britain in the early 2000s, a good taste of the US scene is available on web radio BassRadio.FM. Bass Music is still just getting revved up in Atlanta, headed by champions like Rothstein and his crew, as well as other Edgewood urbanites on the scene, all of whom play a part one way or another in the 808 event.

DJ EARL

For those just being introduced , Bass Music like the 808 Fest itself, crosses genres into music that you may already be listening to or familiar with. It encompasses EDM, dubstep, UK Garage, Bassline, Trap, Techno and House, among others. A few of those will be magic words to dancing queens and gay music-festival lovers who just can’t get enough driving bass and drop-beats. Boom. Boom. Boom. Drop mic.

The earliest signs that you’re about to get some can be planting those tentative first kisses – you guessed it – down under.

Marilyn Monroe said it may be quite continental, but these moves aren’t even for a gay’s best friend.

Ever since Kirsten Dunst pulled down Tobey Maguire’s mask, you’ve kept finding new ways to try it.

Has the gay hug turned it into this? It’s really only appropriate with your mom, or when telling your husband to have a good day.

As lightly – or as hard – as you please, this one lands anywhere and everywhere you find your face already planted.

Short of tongue but maybe just as passionate, keep your kiss and the anticipation going, interchanging both lips with the single-lip suck.

Also called the Lizard, the tongue licks in and out of the partner’s mouth. It’s either your dream come true or a step too far.

French

We spend our teen years getting good at it, and a lifetime perfecting it. Follow your instincts and put those tongues to good use.

advice

The opinions of acquaintances and other randoms are none of our business – even when they do spout them daily on Facebook. Just as it is a mistake for them to think they can change our minds about politics, we owe them the same courtesy. Letting go of the responsibility you feel to sway their wrongheaded views will set you free. Once your head is clear about your role, you are under no obligation to interact with these people, and if you are cornered, you have the option to engage politely, change the subject, or to walk away. All are signs of maturity. If these local oxymorons are also your friends, talk to them the same way you do your straight buddies – with patience and open ears. They’ll hear you better if they feel heard as well. None of this is to say you can’t or shouldn’t do anything for ongoing gay rights fights. Changing hearts and minds of the people in your circle of influence is a solid choice on your part, but the time and energy spent outside that circle can be more effective than taking on relative strangers.

HEY,

Daddy!

There are gay Democrat and Independent groups, as well as LGBTinclusive organizations that are predominantly straight. They would welcome your activism and advocacy on their behalf – and your own. Hey, Daddy!

A gaggle of Gwinnet gays from high school have decided I’m the odd bitch out. A couple of them were my friends once, and a couple more weren’t even out yet when we graduated. All of us moved to Midtown in Hey, Daddy! the last three years, and for some reason they hate me. I’d like to say I don’t care, and I do have other friends, I’m a liberal Millennial with acquaintances on both but it hurts to see them having a “home team” and me sides of the upcoming election. I try to educate my ru- outside the circle by myself. ral, straight Republican friends back home on politics since they aren’t as aware of the affects that electing Such A Divisive Foul Acrimony Can Enrage Trump would have on to the gay community that they “love watching on TV.” I actually seem to get through. Dear SAD FACE: My biggest frustration comes from some gay men and women I know in ATL. I know several who are planning on voting Republican in this upcoming election, or who are choosing not to vote – even knowing how much the generations before us have fought for us to have basic rights.

As if high school and teenage angst weren’t enough drama and disappointment, these people have decided to drag it out and snare you into playing along. Don’t let them. What would be nice about back-in-the-day connections is having them with support for each other. My gut tells me you’re better off without them.

How can I help change this? How do I interact with these people? Should I continue to interact with them Since the only one you can change is yourself, let go of their hold at all? What can I do to ensure my rights stay intact? over you and move on. At your age, any or all of them could grow up someday and see their errors, but waiting for that possibility My Attempts Reaching & Teaching Young Republicans hurts no one but you. Dear MARTYR: Did you notice the difference between your description of the folks back home and people you know here? It’s the word “friends.” Among the pros of friends vs. acquaintances is the ability to have substantive discussions that go somewhere. 56 | 8.3.16

Developments have really begun moving again. This trend oly intensifies in the coming weeks to propel you into the next chapter of your life. One or more major circumstances, if not a whole bunch of ‘em, will display remarkable progress or change. Stay focused on what’s most important; don’t throw all your cards in the air to see what lands where.

Don’t focus on outwardly engaging other people, even if it seems they’re trying to bait you directly or passive-aggressively into confrontation. Look inward to better integrate your latest emotional self-realizations into the wider narrative of your evolution. Sit with the insight as it cracks open prior blockage and welcomes in new light.

Brace yourself for someone doing something erratic or upsetting. Adopt an uncontroversial, delicate, wait-and-see response. Try to smooth things over, even if you take issue with their handling of the situation. You can decide how feel after you’ve extricated yourself and are no longer under the direct influence of the other players.

Expect to see how developing changes in your career are likely to shake out. It still isn’t too late to make your case for a self-benefitting scenario, but take care not to push the envelope. Wait until next week to respond to changes, whether you’re ascending to a heavier workload or responsibility or having to prove you’re capable of such a rise.

New interests, involvements or awarenesses could be pointing you down a revitalizing path. You may get the sense that a recent spark has relit an inner flame which you’d thought had burned out. Harness this passion to put into better perspective what does (and doesn’t) add consequential value to your everyday existence.

Collect your thoughts, rather than prematurely trying to present them. Don’t allow others’ opinions to impact the conclusions you draw. Wait until week’s end to convey your ideas. Should you find yourself in informational exchange, the interpersonal dynamic itself is likelier to muddle your thinking than allow for effective transmission.

More details on your gay horoscope at

Astrobarry.com by Barry Perlman.

If you need to break tension between you and a certain someone, speak your piece in a tone and language you wouldn’t be ashamed to have a panel of your shared peers overhear. Communicate fairly and respectfully, even if the content itself might be disruptive or shocking. If you’ve got something important to say, do it now.

Don’t be afraid to discuss your methodological challenges with those who have more experience. It shows self-assuredness to welcome guidance and mentorship. You don’t have to obediently follow, but they may have answers, and there are interpersonal benefits from honoring folks who’ve earned their high-esteem.

Use this week as a restorative pep-talk to rally yourself and consolidate your of enterprising vigor behind the goal(s) you truly care about most. You’ll regain the steam needed to effectively push ahead next week for a couple of months. Don’t squander the energy. Prep yourself to concentrate on what really matters.

This could be a critical turning-point in freeing yourself, once and for all, from the emotional burden that’s bearing down on you. Swim through any remaining choppy waters now, and stay within the relevant bounds of the situation-at-hand. Soon you’ll be due to retreat into more private self-reflective machinations.

This year shakes up your social-scene, friend group and any community you’re part of. Now’s the time to move assertively to identify your true allies and detach from those who clearly aren’t. It won’t take investigation; people will inadvertently reveal themselves so you can decide about them without setting off their suspicions.

Pay attention to signs of your changing fortune, whether for the better, the worse, or still unclear. You can’t afford to perpetuate business-as-usual with no ability to improve your standing by working hard. Rethink whether a rise in personal stock is even feasible in your existing work-context before you can fight for your rightful place in the world.
