With the Game of Thrones season finale and the Penny Dreadful series finale just finishing, I can also focus on monster time sucks, like Big Brother. If unfamiliar with the CBS reality series, it’s important to know that it airs three times a week. Yes, you read that right. For the next three months, every Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday night is all Big Brother, all the time. I love staring at Paul, even though he’s a little twat, and I hope Da’Vonne wins. All of these shows are, of course, filler until the real summer show airs. In August, the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars will find my body ready and my eyebrow arched for more slaying of the runway.

Summertime & Chill

My group stood next to All Stars 2 contestant CoCo Montrese at Gay Days this year during the afternoon parade at Magic Kingdom. We didn’t bother her, mostly because the All Stars cast announcement was still a few days away from being released. Other fans kept her busy with pictures and air kisses.

Regardless, I hope it’s Phi Phi, Katya, and Detox in the top 3, but I’m obsessed with all things film and television, and have been we won’t know until the end of summer, and that sucks. all of my life. That way, I’ll know what they’re talking about on their Q&A panels. So far, I’m loving it. Especially after the cliffhanger that was Orange is the New Black, I needed to jump into something good to distract my fragile emotions immediately. If you’re a fan of Firefly, Memento, Stargate Universe, and the new Voltron, this sci fi show is for you. Oh, and speaking of Voltron, the new cartoon is awesome. This version features an all new storyline, and it’s retooled for the modern viewer. I blew through it in a week, and I can’t wait for Season 2. Don’t worry, our heroes still have their battle lions, and when pressed against the proverbial wall can form our almighty hero, Voltron. RED HOT: 10 THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT GINGERS

GINGER GAYS COME INTO THEIR OWN, WITH A COTTAGE INDUSTRY HONORING REDHEADED SEX APPEAL, AND NOW WITH A SPECIAL NIGHT IN ATLANTA JUST FOR THEM

W

hether it’s his eye-catching crop of hair or the alabaster skin and gorgeous eyes that come with it, nobody forgets his first redhead. Fiery, fierce and flaming, gay men love a ginger.

But often, these carrot-topped cuties get a bad rap. Sure, there are celebrated gingers through the ages, but even they have taken extra knocks for their unique appearance. Now gingers are gaining an increasing number of admirers. Gay photographer Thomas Knights is dedicated to this very phenomenon. His ongoing book and calendar series Red Hot is devoted to the sexiest ginger men on the planet. Knights, a ginger himself, didn’t always embrace his sex appeal. “I had that whole Aussie surfer thing going on. I dyed my hair blonde because I hated being ginger,” Knights tells the Star Observer. “Ginger men are traditionally emasculated and desexualized. You get to a point as a gay person when you’re proud of being gay, but until we did Red Hot, there wasn’t anything to be proud of being ginger. We’re turning that around. In Atlanta, DJ Diablo Rojo’s signature is a red goatee matching his fiery beats. Now Woofs gets in on the love of all things ginger with its Ginger Appreciation Night. The next one is scheduled for July 16. Before you hang with the reds and their admirers, check in with our list of 10 of the reasons we go gaga for gingers. 1. Passion Everybody knows that a fiery redhead is a formidable force. Channeling all of that fervor and zeal into a loved one makes these guys a perfect partner. 2. Pride If you’re looking for a guy who flies his true colors, look no further than the nearest ginger. And like gay culture, they often band together to campaign against discrimination, even including Ginger Pride Walks. 28 | 7.13.16

davidatlanta.com | 29

3. Sex You thought blondes had more fun. A 2014 study found that redheads were having more sex than us otherly tinted saps. “The radiant color is thought to act like an aphrodisiac and signal youth and fertility,” according to the University of Hamburg study. 4. Actual X Men Professor Xavier must be gleaming. Gingers are literally mutants. The recessive gene that dictates red hair is an honest-to-goodness genetic mutation, and it comes with some pretty cool super powers: increased pain tolerance and even stronger bones because fair redheads absorb more Vitamin D. They're also 54 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer. 5. Carpet & Drapes When that red beard comes in on a all-natural ginger, it matches, well, everything. Nothing better sets off smoldering blue, gray, green or gold eyes. And while the rest of us are going dingy gray, red hair turns glorious gold into old age, eventually turning snow white. 6. Rarified jewel Estimated between .5 percent and 2 percent of the population – except in Scotland, where gingers are about 13 percent – your crush is a bonafide phenomenon since the gene is recessive, and two copies are required. 7. Royal roots Gingers were associated in history with some of the highest bloodlines. King Henry VIII, plus his daughter and successor Elizabeth I, were famously red. Today of course, gay culture is mad about Prince Harry. 8. Confidence They know who they are and have spent a lifetime bearing their badge of honor that shows in their every move, including a reputation for being fireballs in bed. 9. Freckles Each little dot has personality packed in that makes these guys even cuter and sexier. 10. Unique Souls Ancient myth said redheads had no soul. The opposite is true. Look deep into those eyes and ask how someone so genuinely fiery, so astoundingly red hot, could be anything but deeply soulful? ‘Red Hot’ images by Thomas Knights courtesy Bruno Gmuender. 10 gay YouTube obsessions by Mike Fleming

THEY’RE OUT. THEY’RE FUNNY. THEY’RE SERIOUS. THEY’RE TALENTED. THEY’RE WAITING FOR YOU RIGHT NOW.

B

ack in the day, gay guys had to trek to the nearest big city to find another gay person, let alone a whole community. These days, those smalltown guys and us bigcity boys alike have role models on TV, digital friends on our mobile devices, and a community network of prolific vloggers who live in our computers. With personality to spare and share, plus more than a little something to say, meet the 10 best things about online video that pump out a dose of community from points across the globe. Tune in the next time you need to be entertained or enlightened.

MIKEY SMILEZ (SMILEZMIKEY) Break us off a piece of this big ol’ hunk of sexiness. He wants to talk about boys, so we’re in! From getting played to the perfect guy, from his Grindr experiments to international Bottom Appreciation Day, Mikey likes it, and we love Mikey.

TROYE SIVAN This twink singer is best known for making the crossover into real life. His voice for radio and face for pop have led to an album deal and concert tour, and he posts regularly with music and musings. 32 | 7.13.16

TYLER OAKLEY Long after others have given up, an amazing 7.7 million subscribers keep this queer coming back for nine years running. He’s intelligent and quick-witted, but the key to this 27-year-old’s success may be variety – from politics to pop culture to comedy. His best-selling novel “Binge” came out last year.

DAVEY WAVEY ((WICKYDKEWL) A longtime YouTube contributor, this 31-year-old Rhode Islander has a penchant for taking off his shirt and traveling the world to get other guys to do the same. Even better, those guys are always hot and often famous, including gay Olympic Gold Medalist Matthew Mitcham. Since 2007, the topics vary, but the eye candy is usually on point.

V-SQUARED (LUKE AND VINNY) Vinny is a hot Brit ,and Luke is a sexy New Yorker. They’re married and recently moved from London back to the U.S. Originally in a long-distance relationship, the development of their relationship has been more adorable and complicated than any of the best soap opera romances.

KINGSLEY (ITSKINGSLEYBITCH) Easily the most relatable and funniest on this list, any subject Kingsley wants to take onis worth watching. Tune in for Thirsty Thursday takedowns of Instagram comments, but stay for daily rants on Drake’s dick, Kylie’s lip kit, sex at a funeral and so much more.

RUSS MARINE He went viral when he came out on video from his military base overseas. It was as moving in its authenticity as he was hot in his uniform. He readily answers questions from subscribers, talks about real gays in the military and has a test to know if a guy is top or bottom. DAVE G (GAY LATINO) “When you Google videos for ‘Latino’ and ‘Gay,’ what you find is most definitely Not Safe For Work,” says Dave. So he set out to change that by providing a Latino voice to gay topics like Kim Davis, SCOTUS decisions, Grindr and more. MICHAEL BUCKLEY (WHAT THE BUCK?) He’s smart, he’s sassy, and he’s kind of a bitch. So of course we love him. It’s as if your daily dose of entertainment news like ET or TMZ was eaten by a rainbow monster and turned gay as hell. HONORABLE MENTIONS

SUPERFRUIT You may recognize Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi as two gay sides of the five-voiced Pentatonix. When they’re not setting the world on fire in their co-founded, thoroughly modern a cappella band, these two are being hilarious, riffing off each other, and doing on-the-spot performances. 34 | 7.13.16

Mark E. Miller He’s cute. So is his boyfriend. He posts a lot. Joey Graceffa This guy parlayed a YouTube following on his musings into a gaylove music video that’s picking up steam.

HE’S ‘THE MAN’

HERE’S HOW BRIAN MCCALL BECAME MAN OF DAVID 2016, AND WHY HE’S THE PERFECT JOINING HEARTS AMBASSADOR FOR THIS YEAR'S BRAND NEW DAY

C

ongratulations again to our Man of David 2016, Brian McCall. This week’s cover boy won the title by raising the most money for Joining Hearts in our annual reader-driven contest.

Through online donations, support from some two-dozen businesses and organizations, special events he organized and sheer determination, McCall raised an amazing $15, 322 for the cause in just three weeks. That’s nearly a third of the $49,489 that the Top 10 together contributed to Joining Hearts as part of our annual event. “When I would approach people about purchasing the Jell-O shots, as soon as I told them it was for charity everyone contributed something to the cause then they wanted to know what the charity was and what it was about,” McCall says. “As I spent more and more time talking to people, I realized that this is something I have to do, as I explained what our charity is and how it’s benefiting our community and the importance for others to get involved.” The mission of Joining Hearts is to raise awareness and funds to provide housing assistance to Atlanta nonprofit service organizations for people living with HIV/AIDS. We can’t think of a better ambassador for the organization than McCall and his Top 10 cohorts, who all won entry to the Joining Hearts Main Event pool party on July 16 in Piedmont Park. Congratulations to all of them.

advice

Trying to “pick one” would hurt you and support the notion that people choose orientation. You’re somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. If you stay there, great. If not, also great. Identifying and disclosing orientation are personal. Don’t try to rush either just because someone else wants an answer. Hey, Daddy! I’ve been out for 11 years. I’ve always been comfortable with my sexuality, but everything changed when I tested positive for HIV. I haven’t had a date since my diagnosis. I’m afraid of how guys will react. When and how do I tell them? And if the sex is safe, do I have to tell them at all? Touchy Exposing, Lacking Love Dear TELL:

HEY,

Daddy! Hey, Daddy!

Disclosing your serostatus is like coming out all over again. Trust that you can do it again. Like the first time, those who can’t accept it can’t be your problem. There’s no right way to reveal that you’re positive. It can be situational, but it may be easier to say it up front before building attachments or expectations. Reactions are going to run the gamut, from not bothered at all to way too bothered. You’d rather know now which it is. As for whether to disclose, it’s illegal not to in Georgia and most other states, but seriously, it’s Golden Rule time: Would you have liked to know?

I’m 24 and still haven’t finalized my sexual orientation. I have done lots of guys and a few girls, and it was all Hey, Daddy! fun, but I still don’t feel bi. Then again, I’m not ready to I’m the only gay person I know in my small town. I’m say I’m 100 percent gay. considering coming out, but I have no idea how. Help! My friends say that I’m too old to be undecided, and a guy I like told me to come out and don’t get back to Not Enthusiastic to Wait Bashfully him until I do. To make matters worse, my mom doesn’t Dear NEWB: even know that I like guys at least some of the time.

Am I bisexual? Should I come out to my mom? Should Once you come out to yourself, you’re halfway there. Find a trusted confidant – sibling, teacher, cousin, counselor – to I just pick a sexuality and roll with it? tell first. Together you can anticipate challenges and create QUeer Emerging Sexuality Til It Occurs Naturally a safety plan if someone freaks out. Connect with online or community resources, and remember the process can be stressful, so treat yourself well. Finally, finding other gay Dear QUESTION: people may be easier than you think once you come out, Everyone comes out at their own pace, so ignore pressure until even in your town. you feel ready, or when not coming out is standing in your way. Your mom is a big girl. She can wait, especially since you don’t Daddy know yet what to tell her. Now about all that fun you’re having! There is nothing wrong with liking sex with both genders. There is also nothing wrong with leaning toward one or the other to various degrees. There’s also no clock timing your process. You are under no obligation to decide at all. 64 | 7.13.16

Don’t take lightly the job of building, repairing or strengthening a self-supportive home of the heart. Deliberately keep intermingling in that not-all-worked-out zone with whomever else holds sway in what that home looks like. Create a place you want to be, whether to weather a storm or to provide room to a part of yourself you aren’t sure is OK anywhere else.

It’s important to stay an active participant in ongoing conversations, even if you’d rather ditch the incessant yammering for a wild escape into solitary. Continue asserting yourself where your discreet no-comment is liable to be misread as tacit agreement. Such conversations may later provide ‘proof’ of your stance. Speak freely and openly.

Do honest, straightforward, totally unglamorous work to continue making progress on already-defined projects. It’s paying off, so appreciatively claim it as yours, having duly earned it. Be aware of the incoming surge in social engagements headed your way next week—another reason to get loads of work done now.

Don’t squander time on being self-effacing or passive about your preferences. Foreground your own desires, adding a frisky (but not off-putting) edge to your clearer-than-usual declarations of interest. But be careful of such at work, where miscalculating could have your playful, upstart attitude misread as disrespect or insubordination.

Don’t nudge yourself to make any sort of impact now, because it’s coming. Trying too hard could unwittingly rouse disruptive emotions that steal life force away from a farsmarter self investment and cut into future advantages. Don’t mess with the good stuff that’s coming oh-so-very soon. Leave well enough alone for just a moment longer.

Purposely craft your agenda in terms that appeal to a broad cross-section of other participants or stakeholders. It would be presumptuous to believe that others can and should observe and process information the same way you do. Translate your findings into language specifically engineered to speak to certain audiences; it’s part of the process.

Astrobarry.com by Barry Perlman.

Plant your foot ever more firmly on the ground you’re staking as yours. Deliberately foment good impressions amongst those who hold influence and power. Don’t take ‘professional boundaries’ to such an extreme that you come off detached or heartless. Your current advantage critically relies on undercurrents of genuine human interrelations.

You are unmistakably moving forward and headed somewhere with greater meaning, purpose and promise. Relate to each new day in the context of all the skins you’ve already shed. There’s novel opportunity to explore. You already fought hard to get where you are, so take a few moments to work from there.

Look unflinchingly at whatever you’ve tried to hide from yourself. Actively engage with the most inconvenient or troublesome aspects of your life, and invite your worst fears to sit at the table alongside the happy-go-lucky you. Use the results as fertile fodder for deepening your soul-connection with those closest to you.

Before you can take on the narcissistic despots and insidious shit-stirrers, identify your most faithful allies and supporters. Actively seek out interpersonal contact that will appreciate in value. Reach out for companionship with someone you cherish, rather than step back from everyone just because certain people are problems.

Other people are likelier to serve as attention-thieves or focus-scramblers than anything relevant. You’re clear on how to apply your efforts without them right now. Consensus is usually good, but indulging such conversations at the moment merely disrupts an otherwise-productive momentum and doesn’t offer enough in return.

Embrace your creative, artistic, fun-loving side as your contribution to making this world a better place. Rather than argue or defend, support your position by wrapping it in something sweet, charming or colorful. Whether politics, workplace drama, or interpersonal intrigue, be artful, rather than didactic, in how you express yourself.

SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH, tweet @BitchSessionATL or email bitch@davidatlanta.com *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)

Note to self: The moment they say they hate drama is the moment you know they actually love it.

A top in the streets, but a gut bucket bottom in the sheets. #gaysofatlanta

Just own the fact that you have hair all over your body except you head.

Swamp ass is not a substitute for lube.

If YOU'RE going to call out someone's eyebrows on Bitch Session, perhaps you should learn the difference between "your" and "you're" first. #GrammarIsEssential

Then comes the shower selfie complaining how you haven't had time to work out. Beg much?

68 | 7.13.16

Bitch. Get out of the sling. We see you sleeping.

Hey, big guy. Have you noticed that every one of your posts criticizes what others are doing? I have.

Why the eyebrow wars? I mean, you have caterpillars wiggling around up there, and my shit is on fleek! Hunty. That shirt is WAY to tight. Tight rolling your sleeves does NOT make your arms look bigger. You look stupid! And losing 5 lbs. does not constitute wearing a muscle shirt. Dress your age! Oh, and quit being a 3-faced backstabbing asshole. Nobody can stand you anyways!
