favorite activities at the show, and I may or may not have been seen playing in strip poker tournaments, over the years. FroliCon is a show owned and directed by three amazing women, of whom I’ve great admiration for being pioneers of such taboo interests. The convention has gay, trans, bi, poly, Dom, sub, and plain ole vanilla offerings; for everyone looking to know a bit more about what makes themselves happy in the bedroom...and more importantly, how to please their partners. Their annual charity party is always one of the most sensual and hedonistic affairs. There once was a turn-of-the-century Victorian themed party, where the many styles and ways of enjoying the forbidden liquor known as absinthe, became the star of the evening. But not to be outdone by absinthe alone, the offerings of fresh succulent foods were served on fully nude models. With only your hands and mouth as utensils, things got really really interesting. Like, “I just ate kiwi off snatch” kind of interesting. And that’s the kind of charity event I will always get behind! You only live once, right??!!

Nothing says Easter like a Fetish Convention!

With amazing burlesque shows, talent and costume contests, and a massive dungeon designed for all matter of play (the male only portion is quite fucking hot); you would be remiss to skip out on yet another amazing convention like FroliCon, that this fine city has to offer us mere sexual deviants. See ya’ll there!

With the arrival of spring, we become obsessed with getting out of the house. The weather starts giving us hope that the cold will finally go away, and we can start enjoying outdoor sports again. With all the picnics, the shirtless action promised on the Belt Line, those adorable doggie parks, and yummy margaritas on the patios...Midtown finally comes alive! And it can never be soon enough. Well, sort of. Not to be short-changed just yet, there’s a place in Atlanta that still hosts some indoor sports...of a different kind, over Easter weekend (April 2nd thru 5th) each year. FroliCon is a fetish convention hosted at the Sheraton Gateway hotel, down by the airport. And celebrating it’s tenth year, promises to offer fans over 21; a naughtier side of paradise! I’ve personally had the great opportunity to enjoy seven FroliCon events over the years, and look forward to my eighth next weekend. I’ll be seen hosting and emceeing several events and contests over FroliCon weekend, and always enjoy interacting with all the amazing fans completely unafraid of their sexuality. This very special convention caters to a mixed sexuality crowd, and offers just as many educational seminars...covering every possible kink and fetish...you can imagine. So not just one giant Bacchanal style party, but a thinking fan’s convention; where it’s ok to watch classroom-style demonstrations on how to properly tie your partner up, for everyone’s optimal pleasure. There are games and shows to enjoy. Dirty Pictionary (drawing a ‘Dirty Sanchez’, for example) is one of my personal 22 | 4.1.15

OUR LIVES WOULD SUCK

WITHOUT HER Kelly Clarkson talks new equality-inspired anthem, gay bars and her ‘Kezbo’ following by Chris Azzopardi photos: RCA Records 26 | 4.1.15

B

efore catapulting to pop stardom, Kelly Clarkson was one of us. In many ways, she still is. The original American Idol, who memorably erupted into waterworks when she won the first season of the reality show in 2002, wasn’t always able to muster the willpower she’s instilled in the gay community through her uncompromising persona and liberating pop anthems, including those on her latest album, Piece by Piece. That’s just the charm of Clarkson, who opens up in our new interview about overcoming teen inferiorities, diehard lesbian fans who call themselves “Kezbos,” driving Bette Midler to “suicide,” and that night she sipped some wine, felt “sad” for our generation and wrote a powerful song about it.

so I guess it’s not so hard for me to think (the gay community) might like my music. But I don’t know ... I’m not an icon. I’ve only been doing this for 13 years. You’ve gotta be doing it for a good 20 to gain that status. DA: When it comes to your strong bond with the gay community, how do you explain that connection?

David Atlanta: OK, Kelly, take my KC: I have a connection, but I don’t look hand. I wanna go back with you. at it differently. DA: The song “Invincible” alludes to overcoming self-doubts and insecurities. In your own life, when did you most experience those hurdles, and when did you finally accept yourself for who you are? KC: In high school, and you know, I was having a hard time. I guess all people go through it – it’s just a different time period for all of us. When I was a sophomore in high school, it was the one time (in my life) I felt like I was insecure. It was just an awkward stage for me. Well, as was junior high, but I just wasn’t aware of it yet. (Laughs) I’ve always been different. I’ve never been the girl that has to feel like she has to get all dolled up every day. I’ve always been kind of a tomboy. I’ve always been very outspoken, and, you know, my mom is too. I don’t know any other way to be. It’s just my personality. In my sophomore year of high school, I got a little insecure about (my personality), because girls can be mean and I got the lead in this role in choir. No sophomore was ever supposed to get it, so people were just really mean about it. And, like, mean. Worse than the movie! (Laughs) It made me insecure, and not so much (in regard to) my music or as a singer or an artist – just me as a person. I was like, “Is there something wrong (with me)?” I would go, “But I think I’m a good friend.” That was the only time that I was really doubtful of my person. But I got over that real quick! davidatlanta.com | 27

When do we meet him or her?” Honestly, it’s so funny, it doesn’t even register in my world as different. I don’t know why. But yeah, it doesn’t. I’m glad it doesn’t! DA: Why was it important for you to include a gay couple getting engaged in the “Heartbeat Song” video? KC: What’s funny is, I wasn’t even actually the one who picked all the people! The Rally Against Discrimination by Jason Mietelski

I

t was a glorious day to gather with other LGBT Georgians and our allies to take a stand against the impending “Religious Freedom Restoration Act” (SB 129) sponsored by Senator Josh McKoon (R. Ga)--legislation that could pave the way for businesses and the like to legally discriminate against citizens and their families across the state. Amongst the crowd of several hundred were supporters of LGBT rights from Atlanta and the furthest stretches of Georgia, including many clergy members representing various denominations and faith groups, who all are of one mind that their religions are about love, not hate. Moreover, it was agreed that the First Amendment already provides sufficient protection to citizens, outlining a clear separation between church and state. The message that was sent to “those working beneath the gold dome” was crystal clear: Georgians are not going to sit idly by and allow our elected officials to legislate discrimination against anyone for any reason. I spoke with Senator Vincent Fort (D. Ga) after the rally who assured me that he’s doing everything in his power to work with both Republican and Democratic leaders to defeat this insidious piece of legislation that, if passed, could have the power to negatively impact our jobs, families, and rights to live freely alongside every other citizen in Georgia. Senator Fort assured me that there is no other anti-LGBT legislation attached to this bill. As I looked out upon the gathering of same sex partners and their children, older men and women who’d been partnered for decades, and the multitudes of those who support love and equality, I realized how lucky I was to be standing at the Georgia Capitol, on the right side of history. 32 | 4.1.15

Off to the Races Annual Easter Drag Races by Jason Mietelski

G

et ready for the Armorettes’s annual Easter Drag Races this Sunday at The Hideaway. There’ll be lots of games (sign up early to ensure a spot) to include an Easter egg hunt, top and bottom contest, jello shooter toss, lots of drinks, a bonnet contest, and of course, drag at its very finest. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Armorettes’s PWA fund. To date, from the group’s inception in 1979, the Armorettes have raised more than 2 million dollars to help care for those affected by HIV/AIDS—so you can rest assured you’ll not only have a fabulous time, but you’ll also be helping out a great cause. I recently had the opportunity to catch up to a couple of the hottest Armorettes cast members (they only accept 2 new girls each year), and this is what they had to say: How long have you been an Armorette? I’d say if you combined them all into dreams of stardom and the chaos of trying one awesome giant 40,000 pound drag to figure out life…I loved being this char- queen—this would be my drag mama!!! acter and it got me wanting to do drag for real. When I moved to Atlanta people told RC: I’m honored to be part of this group me about this crazy group of drag queens and have a special place in my heart for all raising money for charity…I saw one who’ve donned the heels before me these show and instantly fell in love and knew past 36 years. I look up to Nurse Holly, I wanted to be part of it. Vivian Valium, and Amber Divine who’ve devoted 20 years to this group. Their comRC: I joined the Armorettes because mitment is inspiring and contagious. I wanted to be a part of their amazing legacy. Originally from Chicago, I moved What’s your favorite thing about to Atlanta 3 years ago and began regularly performing? attending the Armorette shows and learning the story of the outstanding work they BB: Making people laugh...or gasp...or do for the community. So with dear friend both! As long as they’re not bored!

RC: Absolutely making people laugh. Does performing drag enhance your personality or is it more like unleashing your alter-ego? BB: My lashes and tits are completely fake, but I’m not! I have fun when I’m in drag and it shows. Of course I’m gonna get a little extra wiggle in my walk! RC: I’d say it enhances my personality and those closest to me would agree. I’ve always had a larger than life personality who enjoys entertaining the people around me. How do you feel the Armorettes have helped our community? BB: Not only have the Armorettes raised more than 2 million dollars for people affected by HIV, but they also seem to bring people out of a certain darkness. I don’t have HIV and until recently didn’t know many people who were positive… so watching these girls express their beautiful selves and make people smile and laugh each week helps me realize there’s something great in EVERYONE. I don’t want the LGBT community to lose sight of that. RC: Just one?! Besides the Armorettes raising over 2.1 million dollars for people living with HIV/AIDS, I would say that the group has provided much needed laughter and joy during times that were quite dark in the community. Any advice for someone who’s dreaming about becoming a drag performer? BB: Come to my house and let me make you over! I wanna be a drag mama! Don’t let anyone tell you what drag’s all about. No matter what anyone says there’ll always be someone who gets it, and if they don’t, fuck them! If you’re serious about it then come to our next audition this summer! (Add us on Facebook for details!) RC: Be who you are; don’t adjust yourself for the status quo. There are many types of drag, all beautiful in their own way—so just have fun with it. Your look and character should reflect your inner creativity. Most important: KNOW YOUR WORDS! 42 | 4.1.15

advice

for seven years. He recently started working more international flights and spends nights away from home. Should I be worried that he’s getting laid during these layovers? Jealous Every Trip

Dear Dom,

Every Single Question... Every Single Answer Dear Dom, My Grindr profile is mostly accurate...but strays just a little bit from my real statistics. Doesn’t everyone do that? How far can I bend the truth? Lying In My Profile LIMP, your lame online strategy has a name: Bait-and-Switch. We can boil that phrase down to just two important letters: B-S. In the world of advertising bait-and-switch is a common tactic. And in most places it is down right illegal. Does everybody stretch the truth when it comes to online hookups? No. But, according to GrabHim.net lots of men do. During February, the gay dating resource conducted a survey of nearly 4,000 gay men, ages 18 to 65. They found a whopping 31% of respondents admitted to lying about their age, height, or weight in online profiles. Just imagine, you’ve searched online for a scorching stud with a massive schlong. You believe you’ve scored big--at least judged by his profile. But when he arrives at your door, standing there is a less-than-average dude with an itsy-bitsy pecker. You’d feel really cheated, right? You’re basically committing fraud when you puff up your profile. No matter how you stretch it, that five-inch penis of yours will never magically become the giant baloney pony you’ve pretended to be online. Stop relying on B-S. Real men use real stats. Dear Dom, My partner is a flight attendant. We’ve been together 64 | 4.1.15

You need to cool it, JET. The days of the “coffee, tea, or me girl” with a man in every city are over. Today’s airline industry is brutally hard work serving mostly disgruntled travelers. It’s great that your hubby is logging more long-haul flights. It means more money because airline attendants only get paid full wages when the aircraft is away from the gate. They are not on the timeclock during those hours spent cramming overstuffed luggage into overhead bins, or delivering those breathless “buh-byes” during deplaning. His nights overseas are most likely spent resting his aching feet in a foreign hotel room--and wondering if you’re whoring it up back at home. Do this: hug your man when you greet him at the airport gate, promise him a ball-draining blowjob...and lift his damn luggage for a change.

the armorettes

ARIES (Mar. 20 – Apr. 19): The week ahead could be frustrating, but it brings a chance to relax and wind down. You may notice a desire to rebel against the system, but you’d be better off finding a way to fulfill your desires while still maintaining a positive relationship with the laws of the country.

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): You’ll be in the flow at work and at your creative best. Harness your imagination for success. An edgy transit suggests you should guard against letting someone disrupt your emotional foundations. Be strong! It helps to know what you want this weekend.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): Get ready for an upbeat social life with options for romance and a chance to hang out with the people you enjoy most. Although you might feel a tad anxious about an ongoing relationship, your best bet may be to let it go. Let it unfold as it will.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): This week you have the option to review your thinking and consider whether or not it’s helping you achieve your goals. If not, think about replacing your negative thoughts with more upbeat versions. This will enhance your chances of success.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): Don’t let a minor misunderstanding affect you early on. Stay positive and things should soon blow over between you. On another note, find the middle way between sharing too much information and being superficial. You don’t need to spill your secrets to everyone.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 20): A focus on your leisure and pleasure sector encourages you to take it to the limit. But you need to balance this by thinking carefully about your financial situation and how much it might cost you.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): You’ll need to decide how much to focus on your mission and purpose and how much to give in to another’s need for attention. One incident could make you aware of how much of your time you’ve given away and how little you’ve gotten in return.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19): Self-doubt could be a problem in the week, but you can overcome anything with a determined approach. Even so, you could resist changes within the home or family. It’s wise to be flexible, as this is a great time to make progress.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): Responsibilities may impede a desire for fun and adventure, which you’ll need to remedy. What you really need is balance - not too much of one or the other. It’s certainly a good time to study or consider making travel plans.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): Communication and interactions continue to be very important this week, bringing many opportunities for work, new business, and buying and selling. The only thing that could prevent you from getting ahead is the pattern of limitation within you.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): Don’t be too quick off the mark regarding a purchase. It’s best not to buy on impulse. Besides, you may get more enjoyment from your money if you use it for leisure and recreation. Starting Friday the idea of getting away might appeal to you.

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 19): Certain friends may no longer share your values, especially if yours have become more alternative or cutting edge. If this drives a wedge between you, it might be time to find people who understand you.

Bitch

S E S S I O N Younger guys these days need to grasp their ears firmly and pull; they might be able to pull their heads from their asses. Let me get this right. So, the secret to being Atlanta’s new “power couple” is to have active Grindr and Growlr accounts listing your status as “single”?

You all know that guy who’s laugh inspired the sounds hyenas make. Nice guy though.

Why don’t you go to the library and brush up on your ignorance?

68 | 4.1.15

You’re not over it if it still makes you angry.

SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH, tweet @BitchSessionATL or email bitch@davidatlanta.com *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)

Again, with the biting of sensitive areas. What the hell?

What kind of idiot says something like “You used to be so handsome”?

“Erectile Dysfunction” is such a harsh term. Why not just call it “Sleepy Peepee?”

What is that fashion style, “clothes that still fit”? I would love for Ted Cruz to get the nomination! He’s gonna need his Obamacare after Hillary beats his ass.
