remember the first time I picked up an issue of David, at least vaguely. It was during my sophomore year of college, and I had just come out months earlier. I did that near the end of my freshman year, and I spent the following three months back home in North Georgia. So by the time I came back down to Atlanta for school, I was ready to see what Atlanta’s gay community had to offer. Thanks to the copy of David I picked up at Outwrite, I began to learn more about the size of Atlanta’s gay community. Fast forward nearly eight years, and I’m wrapping up my final issue as Editor in Chief of the magazine. It’s been a whirlwind few years, as I’ve become more immersed in this community than I ever thought possible. I have learned so much during my time here, and I’m forever grateful for having the opportunity to put my own stamp on this historic part of Atlanta’s gay community. The experience has been remarkable, and has given me some incredible memories I will cherish forever. I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has worked with me during my time with the magazine – whether they’re on staff here at the magazine or people I’ve worked with in the community. To our readers who have given me their feedback (mostly friendly, occasionally not), thank you for engaging with this publication. As I prepare to move onto a new chapter of my life, I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for David Atlanta as it enters a new era. I’m wishing everyone here all the best. Signing off,

Elijah Sarkesian

T

ucked in a corner inside Ansley Mall, the Hideaway is appropriately named. As its patrons know, though, it’s a great place to hang out and meet people. Among the people you’ll meet is bartender Jay R. Kalis. This hot bartender has his share of stories to tell, so when you’re out at Hideaway, be sure to order his signature drink – Sex with an Alligator – and find out more about Jay! What’s been your craziest experience as a bartender? Um…there have only been a few! But one recently would have to be having to remove a drunk from the bar and him sucker-punching me and giving me an amazing black eye…which I wore very well! What sets Hideaway apart from other Atlanta bars? “There are no strangers here, only friends who have not met” is the Hideaway’s slogan, and it couldn’t be more true. People come here for the first time and leave with friends. I feel like it’s a modern-day Cheers, where everyone knows your name! What’s the worst thing a customer can do? Not tip or walk out on their bar tab. 10 // 07.16.2014

The First Man: Getting to Know Our 2014 Man of David

RT: As a recent transplant from overseas, I have not had a chance to really get involved in many charities in Atlanta until recently. My first experience with Joining Hearts was exactly a year ago at the main pool party event as a volunteer. From there I have given to and participated in AIDS Walk Atlanta, AID Atlanta, Fallen Heroes, and other charities along the way. I’m always willing to be a part of any cause that caters to and gives back to my community. DA: Are you going to the Joining Hearts pool party? RT: As I mentioned, last year was my first time attending the JH main event, as a volunteer bartender. I had such a great experience, and have been looking forward to attending again this year... this time representing David Atlanta and AID Atlanta as “Man of David 2014.” DA: Now let’s talk a little bit about your career as a professional ballet dancer. ARIES (Mar. 20 – Apr. 19): You’ll bustle about like a drag queen in a wig store, and then throw a hissy fit when no one pays waits on you in a timely manner. Keep a check on your aggressions today. Losing your temper won’t get you the things you want any faster, or have people paying attention to you.

LEO (Jul. 23 – Aug. 22): Take a deeper look at some of your relationships today. You may be carrying a lot of excess baggage that’s weighing you down. Relinquish unneeded ties to the past, and jettison anyone who’s not adding anything positive to your life. You’ll be surprised at how much you throw away.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 – Dec. 20): Building towards the future of a relationship takes more than looking at the big picture. Focus on the grand scheme of things today, but pay attention to the little details, as they are just as important. Achieving this balance should put you on the road to unlimited devotion.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 – May 20): You may hate it when your friends become successful, but it’s better to be happy for them than to resent them. Don’t let jealous feelings towards others derail your relationships today. Perhaps your envy is a manifestation of anger towards yourself for not doing as well as them.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 – Sep. 22): The call of the wild may have you feeling restless today. So heed it! Head into the great outdoors -- perhaps a long hike, playful swim or leisurely bike ride are in order? Pick something fun and frisky you can enjoy with a very special friend.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 – Jan. 19): You may feel detached from your friends today, and you’ll wonder why they never call. But communication goes both ways, and perhaps you’re the one who isn’t good at staying in touch. Pick up the phone and call some of them today. They’ll be glad to hear from you after all this time.

GEMINI (May 21- Jun. 20): Stop thinking only of yourself today and start doing things for others. There are hundreds of men in your own community who could use a helping hand, or just someone friendly who’ll have compassion for their plight. It doesn’t take much to help, just a little time and basic human understanding.

LIBRA (Sep. 23 – Oct. 22): Make yourself available to gentlemen suitors today. Accept all invitations to dinner, coffee, the movies or whatever public activities they suggest. But turn down offers to take things further. You’re a respectable gentlemen after all, and you don’t jump into the sack with just any Tom, Dick or Harry.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18): An urge to feel socially useful will have you pitching in where you can today. Whether at an AIDS hospice or a homeless shelter, your selflessness will be welcome and much needed. The looks of sincere gratitude and thanks are all the reward you’ll need.

CANCER (Jun. 21- Jul. 22): A profound session of illicit intimacy has you wanting more today, but you probably won’t get it. Such are the pitfalls of getting involved with someone who’s already involved. This will really drag you down today. It’s easy to advise you to get over it, but we all know how hard that can be.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): Men will be mysteriously drawn to you today. They will stare at you and look you up and down in knowing ways. You’ll be flattered by all of this attention at first, until you realize that your fly is unzipped. How embarrassing is that?

PISCES (Feb. 19 – Mar. 19): Don’t let others use you as a doormat today. Stand up for yourself and show them you’re stronger than they think. They may gain newfound respect for you, and you’ll never have to worry about having sand kicked in your face again.

Bitch SESSION SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH, tweet @BitchSessionATL or email bitch@davidatlanta.com *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)

You’re a drag show hostess, NOT a hype man. People want to be entertained. Shut up and bring out your girls!

Is it just me, or is the fantasy of sex hotter than the reality 99% of the time? Sometimes it’s easier to jerk off and call it a day.

Congratulations on being 23 years old and fit. You are also hungry and poor. My tan lines are getting worse! Anyone in Atlanta have a pool and no dress code?

60 // 07.16.2014

I’m always curious about how big my friends’ dicks are. I don’t want to hook up with them. I’m just curious about who’s packing.

Crossfit is a scam. Don’t believe the hype.

I’m tired of struggling to be lean. I’m just gonna eat what I want and call myself a bear.

Stop wasting everyone’s time. If you’re in a relationship, stop whoring around. It’s not attractive. Whoever’s in charge of drag queen marketing should get an award. They are literally everywhere and at everything in Atlanta. Hell, I’m scared to open a beer in my own house, for fear that a drag queen might kick in my door.

Septum piercings are a complete dealbreaker for me. I can’t wait for them to go out of fashion.

So you have the perfect body? You also are a steroid pill popping crack head, but damn that ass.

Anything you can do, I can do better. Except bottoming. You have me beat there.
