Professional Practice Guild hall

Professional Practice Black Berry Crag

Proposed change of use, Site; Guild Hall, Quayside, Newcastle. On the left conceptual drawings, and on the right developed visualisations. This particular assessment was a group project, working with multi-disciplines, using BIM was necessary to centralize work efforts and keep the team up-to-date. Masses of drawing information were produced, as contained in below websites. Please see existing building “Link” Please see new building “Link”

Proposed building Site; Black Berry Crag, Jesmond Dene, Newcastle. On the right concepts, on the left the chosen and developed concept Diablo House. Please see architectural walkthrough via YouTube;

Project (Academic)

1 Interactive House, “we self build our dream home in oak”

Dynamic Architecture, Turning Tower

Interactive House project was based on the selection of the article “An Oak Frame Home on a Replacement Dwelling” from June 2009, Homebuilding & Renovating magazine. The choice of building is important because by choosing a well photographed building like this there is a photo reference and that reference can be used in the assessment of the skill to transpose the information into a digital building model, the floor plans and photos did not match up in original article thus more information was requested, the designer to their credit did provide accurate CAD drawings, however the information was to late. Please see the video; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXgN41cPjww another video was created to demonstrate visual potential of real-time rendering with VR4Max in an architectural context. Please see video at; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4EIEqDQxh8

CAD project, selection is an important factor, to demonstrate skill one must pick a challenge, visualising a common building is simple because their static, as opposed to being dynamic, thus became inspired by David Fishers, Dynamic Architecture. Please see the video;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=REH3Evw0vkE

Austrian wine garden

This project was very exciting experience, travelling with Newcastle College to Austria, the assignment was to redesign a court yard, we surveyed the site, and produced our own ideas.

Building Technology, Northumbria University Library

Building Technology assignment; to pick a building and redesign it to function more efficiently, building of study Northumbria university’s library. Please see building assessment “Link”

Metalwork supplementary to the study of an engineering course. Mild steel is very mandible relative to other metallic materials, if one can manipulate metallic materials then common materials used for architectural model making i.e. Woods, plastics, etc. Should be significantly easier to work with.

Metal working, City & Guilds

Case Study, Bending House review

This case study aims to identify the positive deign features of the bending house, therefore enabling the integration into other building designs, much like catalogue designing however the focus is not on product it is on spaces. Please see full presentation; “LINK”

Project (Academic)

Aviation Museum

Collaborative project with a friend studying at Herriot watt university, this building is a proposed aviation museum, functions of the building include, multiuse areas, galleries, archives, restaurants. The mixed structural systems in this building (Concrete & timer frame with a touch of steel) are the most innovative part of the project.

Project (Academic)

Management Video

Video shows VFX composition planning, and is intended to invite more people into the construction industry, specifically for woman. Working as a team managing the design process of a product, in this case a video, two part assessment individual and group, my group did not contribute at all to this video,.

Project (Experimental)

1.1 Sketches (Personal Collection)

Gallery Room

Sketching is thinking, this random collection of personal sketches is a statement; that sketching is a regularly undertaken activity and although the drawing quality is not admirable, the power of visual interpretation is very evident. To illustrate this point above focusing on a few sketches that have developed into something more.

Extracted, and developed from personal sketch collection the following Link is a video that resulted from the interpretation of the personal sketches, intended to be a Gallery of existing materials compiled into one singular video that includes stills and animations. Please see the following video;

http://www.youtube.com/watch ?v=P7ZIdCOC1R8

Organic Room

Developed from the personal sketch collection another transformation of a inferior sketch into a full blown video that highlights the power of interpretation. Please see the following video;

1.1 Project (Experimental)

3D Tuition Project Here is a project that was initiated by a friend on a whim, envious of the work in this very portfolio, therefore it seemed only appropriate that by budding up for a one off project it would be a fun way to pass on some of my knowledge in visualisation using, Google, Autodesk, and Adobe software . After basically a crash course in digital visualisation my friend had produced other interesting graphics. The theme of this project is a tribute to a game called Final Fantasy VII. Please see video on line available at;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95SjKI0PUSg

Quick House Project

Project The Crib

Classed by the Belbin team role theory as a “Plant” & “shaper” this particular day I was less of a plant and more of a mushroom, this project was the result of a prolonged phone conversation, an hour later this video was created from nothing more than a footprint. Please see video at;

http://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=XEmj3pspvvg

This building model was to include all of the boys toys, an area for the band, pool table, arcade machines, pools, pianos, big TV's however the build-ability element has little consideration in this play project. Another example of the power of interpretation. Please see video at;

1.1 Project (Experimental)

Landscape

This is a selection of landscapes that have being created for the purpose of a music video, The song is a cover version of “Lisa's death” by Akira Yamaoka, the video Includes animated landscapes. Please see video;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ChMU2_JPNo Also available another music video that includes sketches and animations “When I Said I Wanna Kiss You“ Please see video;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJcY2PdFSC0

Fire & Water

To advance knowledge and skill of digital visualisation, it is necessary to play and make opportunities to do so. Thus the personal challenge was to create a fire and water animation, using different digital approaches. Fire animation. Please see Video;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88F7PMGlrRQ Water animation. Please see video;

Seamless Sample

Strategic Sample

Random Sample Photography often described as half art and half science. This is an example of both astonishing scenery and different techniques used to create panoramic views. Random sampling technique was developed on the basic assumption that; to create a good picture, two conditions must be true, condition one good scene condition two good equipment. Often when an photo opportunity presents itself, one doesn't have decent equipment therefore it’s a case of making the best of what you have thus came random sampling panoramic views. (Locations; Austria & Turkey to Greece)

Photography

2

Floral theme with a high vibrant contrast of colours that, makes for beautiful scenery and a beautiful photo shot. Summer samples from, Whitworth Hall Country Park , Durham.

Photography Photo Textures

2

Process of archiving images to be used at a later date, pictures of interesting textures to be edited and used as needed, resulting in a comprehensive collection of vegetation, masonry, woods, etc. useful as a reference while painting, for texturing physical architectural models and digital models.

This to date is the best example of my painting ability, having studied over the last few weeks. “third time lucky

Personal reflective commentary; Whitburn is my home town, and it has had many fantastic local artists particularly watercolour artists, the arts community however now is withdrawing currently, Having experimented with water colour paintings, I feel that this in a potentially positive area of self development in terms of heritage and my career.

Visual Dictionary

5

Language of Design Scale, Rhythm, Proportions, form, material, and colour, are commonly used to describe building’s therefore it’s important to understand this terminology. The following collection of imagery will attempt to illustrate the terminology.

Scale

Visual Dictionary

5

Rhythm

Proportions 1,2,3 and 4

In architecture, a system of relationships of parts to each other and to the whole, often governed by a standard unit length called a module base e.g. On half the diameter of a classical column

Durham Cathedral Finest Example of Norman architecture, founded in 1093 and remains a centre for Christian worship today, Not Human scale this religious building Is trying to metaphorically reach heaven Why dose it look big because people Automatically use the chairs for a visual reference.

Uniformed array of gothic arched openings, sizing of Elements can suggest an altered Depth perception.

Architectural Proportions, Aristotle’s concept of measure, (Proportions have no SI unit, it’s a number game)

Vitruvius Britannicus Taibei

Empire State Building

Form

Visual Dictionary

5

Form refers to the massing of the building the shape

Material

Colour

Material, describes collectively colour, texture, transparency, reflections, etc.

•HSL Hue Saturation Luminance •RBG Red Blue Greens •ACI AutoCAD Color Index •Specification •Min-max (R255 B-0 G-0) •Percentage (R100 B-0 B0) •Hexadecimal (FF0000) •ACI (10)
