2015 UAlbany Women’s Soccer Media Guide 2015 OUTLOOK In 2014, the UAlbany women’s soccer team made great strides with the top scoring offense in program history, finishing fourth in the America East and earning its first conference tournament victory in three years. Returning 10 starters and 16 letterwinners, the 2015 Great Danes look to take another step forward in search of the program’s first-ever America East title. Head coach Caitlin Cucchiella is back with a veteran-laden squad that earned 12 points in America East play in 2014, finishing 7-9-5 overall and 3-2-3 in the league. The Great Danes scored 35 goals in 2014 with 32 assists, the top scoring offense in the America East and each new program records. UAlbany went 7-4 at home at Bob Ford Field, including a 4-2 win over eventual league champion New Hampshire and a 2-0 victory over Maine in the America East Tournament. Cucchiella returns nearly every contributor from last year’s squad, including four all-conference players, the program’s all-time winningest goalie in Division I and five players that scored double digit points in 2014. FORWARDS Two of the top rookies in UAlbany women’s soccer history return to lead up top for the Great Danes. 2014 America East Rookie of the Year and All-Conference First Team member Vivian Vega finished third in the conference with 22 points off nine goals and four assists, the second-highest scoring season in UAlbany history. Also on the front line is America East All-Rookie Team member Kiana Rugar, who earned a program single season record seven assists in 2014, adding five goals for 17 points, ranking fifth all-time in UAlbany single season history. Five returners come back to the unit. Scoring a pair of goals last season, junior Bianca Webb played in 14 games in 2014, leading the team with a 78.6 shot on goal percentage. Also coming off the bench last year, senior Allison Carhart played in 15 games with two starts, scoring a goal against Vermont. Sophomore Kelsey Luke notched a pair of assists last season, appearing in 16 games with a pair of starts. Sophomore Morgan Loder, a local product from Richmondville, played in 21 games with 14 starts last season, playing both forward and defense. Redshirt junior Kari Quinn, who started 13 games in 2013, comes back to the team after missing last year due to injury. MIDFIELD The team returns its entire 2015 starting midfield, adding a couple of newcomers to the unit. The corps is led by a couple of team captains: junior Alexa Schneider, a 2014 America East All-Conference First Team player, scored three goals and four assists last season, while senior Kelly Kempf started 20 games last year, finishing with an assist. Senior Krista Fitzpatrick was the leading scorer in the midfield last year, finishing fourth in UAlbany single season history with five assists and tied for sixth with 15 points off five goals, earning CoSIDA Academic All-District honors. 2014 America East All-Conference Second Team member Caitlyn Paltsios rounds out the unit having four goals and four assists last year. Three players will join the midfield unit. Moving from the defense is junior Angela Luizzi, who played in 13 games with five starts on the back line last year. Local product Meghan Malone was a three-time First Team Suburban Council All-Star at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, while Mariah Williams earned Section III All-Star honors in 2013 and 2014 at Whitesboro. DEFENSE The back line will look for a couple of new players, replacing Stephanie Nelle from last year. Team captain Celia Balf returns for her redshirt junior season, starting 12 games with an assist in the America East Tournament. At cornerback is 2014 America East All-Conference Second Team member Shelby Belak, who started all 21 games and finished with two goals and three assists. 2015 UAlbany Women’s Soccer Media Guide 2014 Year in Review
Going into the second year of Caitlin Cucchiella, the UAlbany women’s soccer team was predicted to finish eighth in the America East going into 2015. By season’s end, the team won seven games and picked up 12 points in league play for fourth place, earning the program’s first America East Tournament home game in three years. 4-seed UAlbany defeated 5-seed Maine 2-0 for a berth in the America East semifinals, where the Great Danes fell to 1-seed Hartford 1-0. In total, UAlbany improved from the previous season with five more victories and nine more points in conference competition, the strongest improvement in the America East. The team was captained by Celia Balf, Kelly Kempf and Alana Brennan going into the season. All three donned the captain’s armband for the first time in their collegiate careers. After earning three non-conference victories over Siena, Saint Peter’s and NJIT, UAlbany went into America East play. After falling to Hartford, UAlbany went unbeaten in five-straight games, its longest streak since 2011, including a trio of victories to surge as high as second place. A 1-1 draw against Maine in the last league game of the year on Rugar’s late goal secured fourth place for UAlbany. The team set new program Division I records with 35 goals, 32 assists and 102 total points. Three different Great Danes earned a place in the UAlbany record book with at least 15 points. Vivian Vega became the program’s first America East Rookie of the Year since 2009 with nine goals and 22 points, each ranking second in UAlbany single season history. Alexa Schneider joined her on the All-Conference First Team, only the second season that UAlbany has had two players earning First Team honors in the same year. On defense, Alana Brennan became the program’s all-time Division I winningest goalkeeper, adding seven victories in 2015 to total 14 in her career. Along with Vega and Schneider on the First Team, Shelby Belak and Caitlyn Paltsios each earned a place on the All-Conference Second Team, while Rugar was placed on the league AllRookie Team with Vega.

2015 UAlbany Women’s Soccer Media Guide MARK BENSON
University at Albany Vice President/Director of Athletics The University at Albany named Mark Benson as director of athletics on August 20, 2014. Benson, 45, became the University’s second AD since the program entered Division I sports 15 years ago. As director, Benson, who previously was the senior associate athletic director at Old Dominion University, provides leadership for UAlbany’s NCAA Division I, 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program and its scholar student athletes. Following a nationwide search, Benson took the reins of the University’s diverse athletics programs from outgoing AD Dr. Lee McElroy, who announced his retirement in June of 2014. “It is important for UAlbany to engage an athletics leader who has a demonstrated background for combining success in sports with high academic achievement. Mark Benson is well qualified to head a program that values the integrity of the collegiate athletics experience,” said University at Albany President Robert J. Jones. “We have an outstanding athletics program with many benefits and a great legacy on which to build. The University community extends a warm welcome to Mark and his family.” Benson also served as the assistant vice president for Athletic Development at Old Dominion, and has served in this capacity since August 2006, and was an adjunct professor in the Sports Management Program. During his time at Old Dominion, Benson was responsible for budget preparation and administration, as well as providing sport supervision for men’s and women’s sailing. During Benson’s tenure at Old Dominion, the Athletic Endowment grew more than $16 million and the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation annual fund grew from $400,000 to $4.1 million. Benson was responsible for soliciting seven $1 million plus gifts to athletics, as well as numerous significant commitments from donors. Prior to his time at Old Dominion, Benson worked at Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. as an Educational Channel manager. In his role with Coca-Cola, he managed the Educational Channel for the Commonwealth Division, which covers sales centers from eastern Delaware to eastern North Carolina. Benson developed financial and marketing proposals as well as negotiated beverage contracts with colleges and universities within his division. Benson and his wife Hunter are the parents of three daughters, Vandy Grace, Lydon and Hannum. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University. “I am excited to join the University at Albany athletics program at this stage in its growth and potential,” Benson said upon his hiring. “My family and I feel warmly welcomed by the UAlbany community, and I can’t wait to settle in and get to work.” “I’m pleased to welcome Mark to the University at Albany and the America East Conference,” said AE Commissioner Amy Huchthausen. “UAlbany has a robust athletics program and he takes the AD title at perfect time to build from a position of strength, both within the conference and nationally. I look forward to working with him as he moves the program forward.”

2015 UALBANY WOMEN’S SOCCER
2015 UAlbany Women’s Soccer Media Guide UAlbany’s intercollegiate athletics program excels at the NCAA Division I level, producing competitive teams, successful coaches, and outstanding student-athletes recognized for their accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom. The University sponsors 19 varsity sports for men and women. Club sports, an intramural program, and recreational opportunities are also offered. A member of the America East Conference since 2001, 17 of the school’s 19 varsity teams are eligible for conference championships and NCAA post-season competition. Women’s golf is an associate member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and football, a Division I FCS program, enters its second year as an associate member of the Colonial Athletic Association in 2014 after competing in the Northeast Conference for the past 14 seasons. UAlbany has won 83 conference championships and produced 37 NCAA Tournament teams since moving to Division I in 1999.
Bob Ford Field, completed Fall 2013
The 2014-15 season saw UAlbany finish in the top-50 of the Capital One Standings, earning nine conference championships and six NCAA Tournament appearances. The field hockey team earned the SUNY system’s first Final Four team in the Division I era while the men’s lacrosse team won an NCAA Tournament game for the second-straight year. UAlbany earned a top-2 finish in 12 of its 19 sports in conference play.
championship and the Gridiron Classic.
In the 2013-14 season, UAlbany continued its strong athletic performance with its third-consecutive America East Commissioner’s Cup, winning eight America East championships and competing in four NCAA Tournaments. The Great Danes earned NCAA victories in men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse and softball, also winning league titles in women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track & field and men’s and women’s track & field.
The quality of UAlbany’s athletic program is evidenced by some of the finest facilities in the nation. The indoor and outdoor physical education design is among the most comprehensive in the Northeast. In the spring of 1992, the University opened SEFCU Arena (formerly Recreation & Convocation Center), an $11 million state-of-the-art facility. SEFCU Arena is the home for UAlbany’s men’s and women’s basketball teams, and has a .11 mile indoor track. The 4,538-seat arena also serves as a major venue for community events such as rock and pop concerts, sporting events and University activities. The playing surface on the arena’s three basketball courts and the surrounding track were completely renovated in December 2004.
Celebrating the school’s most successful year in Division I history in 2012-13, UAlbany won a record nine conference championships, while making four NCAA Tournament appearances. The Great Danes also won the America East Commissioner’s Cup for the second time in school history, as field hockey, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, and men’s lacrosse captured conference titles. Football also won its sixth NEC championship and had two players sign NFL Free Agent contracts.
UAlbany has an athletic history that dates back to the late 1890s when the first known intercollegiate teams arrived on campus. UAlbany competed at the college division level prior to the NCAA’s restructuring in 1972. The athletic program moved from Division III to Division II in 1995-96.
Adjacent to SEFCU Arena is the Physical Education Building which houses University Gymnasium; three full-size playing surfaces which can be used for basketball, volleyball, and tennis; four racquetball/handball courts; four squash courts; a swimming pool; a weight training and fitness center with Olympic weights; an aerobic exercise room and a dance studio.
The Great Danes won eight championships in the 2010-11 academic year, including field hockey, volleyball, women’s lacrosse, softball and all four track & field titles. The lacrosse program, among the top 10 in both national polls, won its first-ever league crown and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. Volleyball, field hockey and softball also made the NCAA field.
SEFCU Arena and Physical Education Building were air-conditioned in March 1996, as the state appropriated funds for renovations and permanent improvements to the University’s facilities. The $2.3 million in funding was prompted by the New York Giants’ decision to hold its football training camp on campus. The project brought together the region’s community in what proved to be a successful partnership.
In 2006-07, the Great Danes had a breakout year as a Division I program with conference championships in men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, softball, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, men’s indoor track, women’s volleyball and baseball. In the spring of 2007, men’s lacrosse and softball became the first UAlbany teams at the Division I level to record victories in NCAA postseason competition.
The indoor complex is complemented by fine outdoor facilities, highlighted by 2012-13’s substantial additions. The University constructed a synthetic turf field designed for year-round recreational, intramural and club sport activities; a state-of-the-art 8,500 seat multi-sport complex for football and soccer; and a brand new track and field venue.
In 2005-06, men’s basketball produced one of the most significant achievements in the school’s intercollegiate history with its first-ever NCAA Division I berth. UAlbany won the first of two consecutive league titles. The program’s storied turnaround resulted in a strong NCAA showing against No. 2 Connecticut. UAlbany was awarded the 2004-05 Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup, which annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in the America East. In 2008, football won its fourth Northeast Conference
UAlbany broke ground on the site of what has become two allweather athletic fields in May 2005. “John Fallon Field” is the home to the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, a sand and rubber infill turf field that stretches 99,450 square feet. An adjacent surface known as “Alumni Turf Field” is used for women’s field hockey in addition to serving as a multi-use recreational field for UAlbany students. The second phase of the complex’s construction, which includes seating for nearly 2,500 spectators, was completed in the fall of 2008.

2015 UAlbany Women’s Soccer Media Guide A Quick Reference for NCAA Rules and Regulations Concerning Representatives of Athletics Interests (Boosters), Fans and Alumni Relative to Recruiting How do I know if I’m a Booster? •You’ve participated in a group, agency, and/or organization that promotes UAlbany Intercollegiate Athletics. •You’ve made a financial contribution to the UAlbany Athletic Department and/or a UAlbany Athletics Booster Group (e.g., purchasing a ticket to a competition). •You’ve assisted or have been requested (by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics) to assist in the recruitment of prospects. •You’ve been involved in promoting the UAlbany Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. •You’ve assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes and/or their families. What is an Extra Benefit? •Any special arrangement made by an institutional employee or booster to provide a student-athlete, or his/her friends or relatives a benefit that is not authorized by the NCAA. Some examples include but are not limited to: •Money, special discounts and/or free or reduced products/services. •Use of a telephone or credit card for personal reasons without charge or at a reduced rate. •Entertainment services such as; movie tickets, and/or tickets to professional sporting events. •Use of personal property such as; beach homes, boats, cars, and/ or stereos. Who is a Prospective Student-Athlete? •A prospective student-athlete (PSA) is a student who had started classes for the ninth grade or above, including students in prep schools, junior colleges and other four year institutions. In addition, a student who has not started classes for ninth grade becomes a PSA if the institution or a Booster provides the individual or the individual’s relatives or friends with any financial assistance or benefits that the institution does not provide to prospective students in general. Two basic rules to follow are: Treat ALL STUDENTS as prospects; ASK BEFORE YOU ACT •A PSA remains a PSA even after he/she signs a National Letter of Intent or Financial Aid Agreement. •A PSA remains a PSA until he/she either attends classes in any term at UAlbany, participates in a regular squad practice or competition that occurs prior to the beginning of any term at UAlbany, or officially registers, enrolls, and attends classes during the summer prior to enrollment. Contact with Prospective Student Athletes All in-person, on- and off-campus recruiting contacts with a PSA or
the PSA’s relatives or legal guardian(s) shall be made only by authorized institutional coaches or staff members. A contact is defined as any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardian(s) during which time any dialogue in excess of an exchange of a greeting occurs. Boosters are prohibited from contacting a prospect or the prospect’s relatives or legal guardian(s) to encourage the prospect to participate in intercollegiate athletics at UAlbany. Boosters are prohibited from engaging in the following: •Any contact with a PSA at any time whether in person, by mail or by telephone. •Any contact with a PSA’s coach, principal or counselor to gain information that would assist in evaluating the PSA either athletically or academically, including visiting the PSA’s educational institution to pick up film or transcripts. •Any involvement, directly or indirectly, in making arrangements for or giving any financial aid or other benefits to a prospect or his/her family, relatives or friends (such as gifts, awards, loans, employment, transportation, free or reduced rent or housing, etc.). •Providing entertainment during the prospect’s official visit. •Sending anything to a prospect including letters, cards, newspaper clippings, game programs, post cards, e-mails, etc. (the type of materials that may be sent and who may distribute such materials is strictly regulated by the NCAA); •Any contact with enrolled student-athletes at other four-year colleges or universities for the purpose of exploring their interest in transferring to UAlbany. If a student-athlete enrolled at another institution contacts you, do not discuss the possibility of transferring with the athlete. Immediately tell the student-athlete to contact the UAlbany Athletic Department. The following examples of limited contact are permissible: •Contacts made with a PSA who is an established family friend, relative or neighbor so long as the contact is not arranged by a UAlbany staff member and is not made for recruiting purposes; •An unavoidable, incidental contact with a prospect provided recruiting does not take place, only normal courtesy is involved and the contact is not pre-arranged. •Casual contacts at UAlbany athletic events, if incidental: •Contacts about summer employment only after the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent or, in the case of a junior college prospect, only after the prospect has graduated or officially left the junior college. •Contact involved in a normal working relationship (i.e., booster who is a doctor or dentist who treats a prospect professionally) provided no recruiting is involved. •Viewing a prospect’s game at your own initiative (must not involve contact with the prospect).
If you have any questions or concerns, on this subject or any other NCAA matter, please contact the UAlbany Athletic Compliance Office. Eryn Cook, Associate Athletics Director of Compliance: ecook2@albany.edu Nikki Branchini, Compliance Coordinator: nbranchini@albany.edu
