I
n the past few decades, the landscape of the Emergency Medicine workforce has changed tremendously.
Its evolution was quick and it has become a team – oriented specialty whose impact has a massive effect on patient care. The first ever postgraduate course in Emergency Medicine of Davao Doctors Hospital and the 17th for the Makati Medical Center was an overwhelming success. It had gathered 465 delegates from the expected 150. The one – day symposium dubbed, Emergency Medicine: Anatomy of a Code Blue was made possible through the efforts of Davao Doctors Hospital Department of Emergency and Outpatient Services, the Makati Medical Center Department of Emergency Medicine and the Learning and DDH Development Department. We were honored by the presence of no less than the Medical Director of Makati Medical Center, Dr. Johnny B. Sinon and the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Gabriel G. Gabriel as two (2) of the resource speakers. This CME activity was held at the SMX Convention Center, Davao City on August 20,2016. The learning objectives were: I
To provide physicians with practical, quality continuing medical education

To encourage participants to increase their knowledge of important advances in the field of emergency medicine
III
To help physicians apply gained knowledge to the care and treatment of patients in the emergency room
IV
To design a program for emergency physicians and other clinicians who wish to advance their current knowledge of and who wish to keep abreast of advances in emergency medicine
Emergency Medicine: Anatomy of a Code Blue featured interesting topics which an emergency medical services responder, nurse and physician can relate to. It was awarded 30 CME PMA points. The topics included: Chest Pain: Cardiac or Not; Cardiac Biomarkers; New Strategies of STEMI; Medical Therapies for the Management of NSTE-ACS; The MEGA CODE; Digital Medicine: Unleashing the Power of your Smartphone; Pediatric Emergencies; Care for the Geriatric Patient; Acute Management of Stroke (Hemorrhagic and Ischemic); Triage in Mass Causalities; Trauma Resuscitation; Transport of Patients; COPD in Emergency Medicine and Utility of FAST in Trauma. Registration started as early at 6:00 in the morning. The speakers and the delegates were met by the Cultural Dancers of Davao Doctors College. The 17th postgraduate course was opened by the Medical Director of Davao Doctors Hospital, Dr. Noel A. Villanueva. The speakers who are fellows of the Philippine College of Emergency Medicine include the following: Dr. Paolo Edgardo C. Palad Jr., a U.S. licensed medical physician and the President and CEO of the Academy of Emergency Sciences; Dr. Gabriel G. Gabriel, Chairman of the Department

of Emergency Medicine of Makati Medical Center; Dr. Daniel Noel M. Luchangco currently the Operations Consultant, Service Operations Quality Management, Makati Medical Center; a global American CE Provider; an international SOS Medevac / House Call Physician and the Head, Emergency Department of UERM and Providence Hospitals and Mandaluyong City Medical Center; Dr. Johnny B. Sinon, the Medical Director of the Makati Medical Center and the International SOS (Philippines) Inc.; Dr. Artemio C. Salvador, a Project Consultant, Hospital Information System, Electronic Medical Records (Emergency Department) and Deputy Director for Quality Management in Ospital ng Muntinlupa; and Dr. Donna Dolores G. de Padua, a Coordinator Doctor of International SOS (Philippines) Inc., and an ED Officer of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Makati Medical Center. They were joined by their Emergency Medicine Resident Physicians: Dr. Mark Paul Castillo (Chief Resident), Dr. Dianne Marie de Speakers - Makati Medical Center Jesus (Chief Resident), Dr. Rey Eleazar San Pedro, Dr. Irene Rose Inanama Umayam and Dr. Kristel Marie del Rosario. The Junior Consultants and the Staff Nurses from the Emergency Department of Davao Doctors Hospital participated in the different committees and served as moderators for each lecture topic. They were as follows: Dr. Gil D. Pabellon, Dr. Alain O. Kintanar, Dr. Arthur G. Carpentero, Dr. Mark Anthony A. Tom, Dr. Vincent Cesar G. Magallanes, Dr. Ernest Hope G. Pineda, Dr. Angelique Elga C. Lo, Dr. Jose Carlo E. Loren, Dr. Jasper Jay S. Acosta, Dr. Ian Neil R. Demafeliz, Dr. Yasmine Lourdes A. Grasparil, Dr. Sylvia C. Pabellon and Dennis A. Villanueva, R.N., Jefferson A. Alicaway, R.N., and Maria Minerva J. Miguel, R.N. The speakers were awarded certificates of recognition and custom – made traditional Mindanao gongs for their clinic desks. A day before the event, guest speakers made a quick tour of the Emergency Department and the Outpatient Department and were greatly impressed with the five (5) level Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) the institution has adapted. Dinner later that night was served at Jack’s Ridge Resort and Restaurant where they immensely enjoyed the “Sinugbang” Tuna Panga. ________________________________________________________________ MARIA ARACELLI F.
