The Grand Magoozi
Hetty Kate & James Sherlock
Prophets
The Grand Magoozi is the nom de plume of Susie Scurry, whose smoky vocals and simple songwriting deliver tenderness and subtle wit in equal measure. Performing as a duet for this gig, The Grand Magoozi occupies the stage in a dreamy twilight world that lies somewhere between the jazz club and the barnyard.
Hetty Kate is one of Australian jazz luminary James Morrison’s favourite singers, and has graced stages from New Zealand to New York. She is joined by outstanding guitarist James Sherlock for a set guaranteed to please all fans of the timeless standards. Come share in an evening of classics and curios from The Great American Songbook.
Known for their unique approach to group improvisation, ‘stylefree’ grooves and polyphonic sounds, featuring saxophones, drums, percussion and self-made instruments, the spectacularly masked band Prophets is set to raise eyebrows and catch ears in this musical and theatrical performance.
Darren Hanlon
Serina Pech
Véronique Serret
After years of touring the far flung corners of the globe, Darren Hanlon is heading north with his drummer and partner-in-crime Steph Hughes. Get cosy with an artist whose down-to-earth folk style and charming, candid storytelling will make you feel like you’re in a loungeroom amongst friends.
Emerging from a world of indie-acoustic experimental folk, Serina Pech combines delicate raw vocal beauty with junk-yard style percussion. Her sound could be the eccentric love child of Joni Mitchell and the backing musicians for Tom Waits and John Cale. Come and celebrate the launch of Serina’s third single and experience the Territory’s new emerging voice.
Virtuoso violinist Véronique Serret has established herself as a versatile musician with a repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary classical, folk, rock and improvisation. She loves going electric and brings to Festival Lounge her raw energy, exceptional technique and her pride and joy, a custom-made six-string electric violin.

Melbourne Rebetiko Ensemble Take a musical journey into the heart of Greece in the 1920s-40s with Melbourne Rebetiko Ensemble. Often called the Greek blues, ‘Rebetika’ was originally the music of the poor and dispossessed and its passionate, sorrowful and romantic sounds will break many a heart at The Rails. FESTIVA L MULTIPACK:
Joey Ayala
Frau
Award-winning singer-songwriter Joey Ayala brings a uniquely Filipino sound to songs about the environment, social justice and human rights. His smoky voice, poetic lyrics, east-meetswest musicality and off-beat sense of humour are accompanied by guitar and indigenous instruments for a unique protest style.
Indonesian ‘duo’ Frau – Leilani Hermiash and her digital piano Oskar – makes its Australian debut at Darwin Festival. With influences ranging from Baroque to folk to cabaret to ballads, Leilani’s incredible piano playing is matched by her unforgettable vocals on quirky, melodious stories of love, life and the world’s great mysteries.
