LYNNETTE CROWDER (EMBA ’10)

Learning to Lead from ‘Crucible Moments’

Lynnette Crowder (EMBA ’10) decided early in her career to follow her curiosity and run toward challenges.

A mechanical engineering graduate of Virginia Tech, she was recruited by General Motors and offered a choice of working in the design group or operations. Most of her peers picked design, the sought-after darling of automotive engineering. Crowder chose operations.

“I said, ‘Actually, I’d much rather get experience managing people, leading people,’” she recalls. “They said, ‘Really? Are you sure?’ That was the beginning of a path of taking that analytical piece of me and fusing it with how to motivate and engage people.”

Crowder later moved into GM’s sales side, bringing fresh perspectives from operations. She was in sales and enrolled in Darden’s Executive MBA when, midway through the program, the global financial crisis hit and GM declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. At Darden, she found a place to pause and assess her next step. After graduating, she joined the general manager development program at MeadWestvaco to gain a high-level view of the business before choosing a specific path.

At a mentor’s urging, she moved into HR. She was leading HR for a large division in late 2019 when US Silica recruited her to be senior vice president and chief human resources officer.

“Years ago, HR was the personnel department. They figured out benefits, answered questions. It was very transactional,” she says. “But in the last decade or so, that’s really transformed. For a lot of business leaders, there has been this realization that achieving a business strategy is so dependent on the talent and organizational capability that you have.”

Within six months of starting the job, Crowder was overseeing layoffs forced by a downturn in the oil and gas sector, and then the pandemic hit. The experience proved to be one of her biggest tests yet.

“I call it one of those crucible moments that can really crystallize a team. Being in a new role in the C-suite, facing the challenges of the time, was one of those,” Crowder says. “Though it’s been really tough, it’s also been really valuable.”

Crowder serves on Darden’s Corporate Advisory Board. She’s eager to help open doors for students, particularly women, who lack a built-in network to advance their careers.

She still pulls out her notes from Professor Paul Simko’s financial accounting class to help colleagues explain accounting impacts in a clear and simple way.

“He had a way of doing that. The way that he taught accounting was so business relevant, rather than transactional or technical,” Crowder says. “I actually have my accounting notebook on my shelf right now.”

Gina (Rajpal) Felton has recently moved from her role in strategy and portfolio management at ConocoPhillips back to the world of government affairs as director, federal regulatory. She is excited about this new opportunity and grateful that the remote-work culture we’ve all cultivated this past year will allow her to remain in Houston, Texas, for the time being. Gina and family fared OK during the historic freeze that hit Texas earlier this year and are thankful for the concerns of classmates near and far. She looks forward to one day sharing the beauty of the campus and Charlottesville with her husband and four children.

Adair Newhall was recently promoted to partner at Greenspring Associates, a venture capital firm where he works on sourcing and due diligence efforts as well as taking a lead role in the firm’s healthcare practice and Portfolio Impact Program. He and his wife, Kathryn, and their kids live in Baltimore, Maryland.

Emily Murray is happy to report that she is a mom! Emily welcomed a daughter, Elizabeth Helen, on 30 November 2020. She’s looking forward to continuing the proud tradition of Darden women in the family — following her grandma Lee Brown Murray (MBA ’85) and her mom. Wahoo waaaah!

Ray Lamas took on a new role with AECOM as vice president, federal ventures. He is leading a new business line focused on large federal staff augmentation contracts aligned to our core engineering skill sets, as part of AECOM’s larger global growth strategy. Last year, Ray also served on his compa-

Ben Goodman and family are making the most of the virtual office and moving to Crozet, Virginia! Please reach out if you are ever in town. We’d love to catch up.

Kyle Power and Stephanie Quinones-Millet were married on 10 October 2020 in a quaint outdoor ceremony in Kyle’s hometown of Easton, Massachusetts. Although planning a wedding during a pandemic kept things interesting, the couple was fortunate to pull off a socially distanced event surrounded by close friends and family, including fellow Darden classmate Ned Greenberg.

Patrick Ryan, his wife, Sally, their daughter Evelyn, age 3, and son Michael, age 1.5, welcomed a daughter, Catherine Frances, on 10 December 2020. The family has also moved back to Charlottesville, so don’t be a stranger reach out when you are back in town!

The Class of ’10 gathered on a Zoom call on 19 April to celebrate our 10th (or 11th!) anniversary of our graduation from Darden. We had over 60 classmates join. It was great to hear updates from almost every participant — we learned about families, moves, new jobs and an incredible number of patents held by one classmate! We can’t wait to gather again in person soon!

Meghan Welch; Dave Bonenfant 4meghanwelch@gmail.com david.bonenfant@gmail.com

The EMBA class of ’10 is very sad that we will not be seeing each other on grounds for our rescheduled reunion this spring. We look forward to reconnecting virtually, and in the meantime, we have so much fun news to share!

We start by congratulating Vesna Todorovic on her promotion to a chair of the department of anesthesiology at the University of Colorado. Vesna has relocated to Denver for this exciting opportunity.

Dive Technologies, co-founded by Jerry Sgobbo, recently launched their large autonomous underwater vehicle. Dive Technologies also closed a funding round in December and is seeing good market interest from their defense and commercial customers. Congratulations Jerry!

Congratulations are also in order for John Benner and his wife, Jelena Kecmanovic. They have moved the Behavior Therapy Institute (BTI) into new offices in the Court House area of Arlington, Virginia. The institute also will open a new location in the Penn Quarter neighborhood of Washington, D.C., in late August. BTI has expanded significantly in the past two years, growing from a sole practitioner psychotherapy practice to a group practice employing more than 20 doctoral level therapists specializing in cognitive behavior therapy and other evidence-based treatments for adults, adolescents and couples. Plans for 2022 include the opening of an office in suburban Maryland. Way to go John and Jelena!

Kudos to Tucker Norton who has been named the global business leader for the Cyrel Solutions Division at DuPont. Based in Wilmington, Delaware, Tucker is responsible for growing DuPont’s world-class portfolio of flexographic solutions for printers/ converters and trade shops.

Scott Berg sold his interests in ATA, the company he founded in 2008 while at Darden, to his business partners and investors in January of 2020. Scott is on to his next company — working on blockchain-based financing for secure pharma supply chains — called Authentag. Well done, Scott.

We also congratulate Carrie Cabell who joined USAA as executive director leading the property and casualty claims learning team of 80 learning professionals who serve 6200 claims adjusters. Located in Colorado Springs, Carrie also joined USAA’s regional executive team for 1700 Colorado-based employees.

And lastly, a high five to Meghan Welch who has been promoted to executive vice president of human resources and chief diversity officer at Capital One.

Brent Sanet (MBA ’11) with his family

Jimmy Hicks (MBA ’11) and Debora wed 14 March 2020 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Kyle Power (MBA ’10) and Stephanie QuinonesMillet were married on 10 October in a quaint outdoor ceremony in Kyle’s hometown of Easton, Massachusetts.

Jonathan Harris (MBA ’12) welcomed his second child, Sophia Isabella Harris, on 28 October.

Jimmy Hicks and his wife, Debora, married on 14 March 2020. They welcomed a baby girl on 31 March 2021.

Chris Mehalic chrismehalic@gmail.com

The 2011 EMBA class wishes all in the Darden community hope and optimism as we slowly emerge from what’s been a truly unique and challenging year. This year we celebrate our 10-year reunion. Though the reunion festivities will be virtual, we look forward to reconnecting and properly getting together in person later in the fall. Please enjoy a few recent class updates:

A big thanks to Tom Tichenor for organizing a lively and well-attended Zoom/ Homeroom (has that been trademarked yet?) on 25 February. A very special thanks for our guests Barbara Millar and Paul Simko.

John Dowd and his family have relocated from the sunny shores of California to the misty mountains of North Carolina. They’re excited to stretch out a bit and welcome the opportunity to be living back in the United States.

Vipul Dixit is now in Atlanta, Georgia, enjoying his new role with Shell working on the Pennsylvania Chemicals Project, when he’s not playing the markets, that is.

Matt Bradley survived the COVID-19 winter in classic Vermont style with his wife, Beth, and their two children by shredding the slopes. Matt is not at all ashamed to admit that he hung up his snowboard this year in favor of skis, even if it may seem a bit off-brand.

Dave Schmidle has accepted a new role as head of global compliance with CFA Institute in Charlottesville, focused on developing a strategic program and implementing new risk-based solutions.

Betsy Moszeter is spending 2021 living in Lagos, Nigeria, working remotely (really remotely!) while building her family. She’s extremely grateful for small wins (actually getting to buy shampoo and dish soap), the quality and diversity of the Nigerian-grown food, great technology tools and texts and video calls to stay connected with loved ones in the States. Drop Betsy a line to hear about her adventure and just say hi.

Lauren (Keller) Hunter (MBA ’13) married Daniel Hunter on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, last fall.

I will never forget him googling ‘whack’ instead of WACC and saying, “That can’t be right ...” Brian was a bright light and we have lost him much too soon.”
