HERITAGE
Ten Generations Two Traditions
The earliest family member on record is John Hunt, born in 1687 and listed as a master brass founder, making fine candlesticks during the reign of James II.
Throughout the last three centuries, ten generations of the Hunt family have adapted to a rapidly modernising world, but two traditions have remained constant: the eldest son of each generation has been named John and all have manufactured fine lighting.
Entrepreneurs & Exhibitors
The late 1700s brought the Industrial Revolution and quiet cottage industries became futurescapes of whirring machinery. The Hunt family thrived and were selected to exhibit their products at Prince Albert’s Great Exhibition under the glass domes of Crystal Palace in 1851.
Quick to adapt to new technologies, the company moved from candlesticks to outdoor gas lamps, lighting the streets of nineteenth century Britain and became leaders in electroplating by the 1890s.
On The Grid
In 1926 Britain’s patchwork of small supply networks was transformed into the National Grid; electric light was finally available to everyone. Luckily, our factory at Bradford Street in Birmingham had already converted its machinery to become one of the first manufacturers of electric lighting a decade before.
The Hunt family became renowned for their electric fittings made in the new Art Deco style, installed at the first Odeon cinemas in the 1930s and becoming a key feature of their dramatic maritime-inspired lobbies.
Spinning Sixties
The late 1950s saw a long-awaited revival of design, manufacture and innovation. The post-war shortages of labour and raw materials were finally at an end and a young David Hunt founded our current factory on the northern edge of the Cotswolds.
Experimenting with new technologies, the company became leaders in spun metal and fine resin casting, creating design classics that typified a new, futuristic era.
Victorian Revival
The 1980s saw a return to traditional British interiors - a crucial point in our company’s history. John Peter Hunt, the tenth generation of our namesake, began to rescue Victorian gas light designs from the company design archives.
Adapted to twentieth century manufacturing techniques and electrical standards, these collections anchor David Hunt Lighting to its past and have been best sellers for four decades.
A Timeless British Brand
In 2000, David Hunt Lighting became part of the där lighting group. In the last two decades the company has worked tirelessly to build an exclusive partner network of the UK’s finest lighting showrooms, offering a range of bespoke services for interior designers and architects.
Above all the group strives to preserve the company’s heritage and the traditional techniques mastered at the original David Hunt factory, now thriving with a new generation of talented craftspeople.
BESPOKE
We create all of our lighting designs using traditional techniques in our Cotswolds workshop, meaning we can provide a wide range of options and finishes for many of our products.
If you are looking for something that perfectly compliments your own interior style or colour palette, we also offer a comprehensive bespoke service.
Throughout our catalogue you will see two icons: & that indicate where our workshop can finish a given product in either a colour or fabric specified by you.
Where metal spinnings or light fixtures are hand finished as denoted by the icon, they can be painted in any of the colours featured in our new paint palette, shown on page 282. We can also complete them to match your own colour scheme using a BS4800 RAL colour reference.
Both the outer and inner shade surfaces can be made to match a chosen colour, or you may prefer the inner shade to be finished in a beautiful warm antique brass or elegant brushed chrome for an authentic vintage feel.
Realise your vision in partnership with our highly skilled and experienced design team
Our fabric shades can be made in any of the colours featured in our house collection of luxury satins, silks and linens shown on pages 284 to 287. We can also create fully bespoke shades using your own choice of fabric, subject to suitability testing.
Shades are finished with a variety of inner linings from rich warm gold, silver or bronze metallic laminates, to two-tone fabric combinations and a choice of two taffeta linings that can be combined with our beautiful pleated shade range.
The customise section on pages 280 to 293 provides you with all of the information you need to bring your design vision to life and build a stunning new centrepiece for your living space, truly unique to you.
To guarantee that our team make your product exactly to your specification, simply build a customised product code using the ‘how to’ guides. You may be specifying a paint colour (page 283), a fabric shade for your shaded fitting (page 289), or building a separate lamp shade for your favourite table lamp (page 291). A step by step process detailing all of the various options will help guide you to your finished ‘configured’ product code.
If you require any further guidance on how to specify a product, your local stockist will be able to assist you further: www.davidhuntlighting.co.uk/stockist
You can now also explore our configurable range and build your own product using our online product configurator: www.customise.davidhuntlighting.co.uk

The FABRICS
Our all new fabric collection hosts a hand–picked range of luxury satins, dupion silks and pure linens, each finished in a wide variety of both rich and subtle natural dyes.
Our team hand make each lamp shade to order and are able to advise on any unique requirements you may have, such as bespoke fabric matching to a wider interior scheme.
Please contact: sales@davidhuntlighting.co.uk to discuss your project with our specialist team.
Over 150 years of heritage and passion for their craft goes into every metre of fabric Ian Mankin weave, all designed and made at their Lancashire mill. They actively champion the craft of weaving, tapping into a long history of weaving skill and pushing the boundaries of the loom to develop fabrics and homewares that endure both the changing tides of fashion and the demands of a modern home. Taking inspiration from time-honoured textile crafts, they breathe life into traditional fabrics with contemporary design and skilful creativity. They weave fabrics that represent great value and unbeatable quality, with a focus on natural fi bres.
DUPION SILK
Our 100% dupion silk is a natural handwoven fabric, unmistakable by its richness and variety of colour and texture. The triangular structure of the fi bre acts like a prism, refracting light to give the surface of the fabric a lustrous sheen. As a natural fi bre, the texture and slub of dupion silk is characterised by variation and irregularities in the shade and weave.

LAMINATE
Shade laminates give hardback shades their rigidity. We carefully select our laminate to ensure that the shades remain sturdy whilst allowing light to pass, creating a soft glow through the fabric. Our metallic linings add a contemporary feel; the warmer gold and bronze tones infl uence the light to give a warm ambience. Conversely our silver and white laminates create a more neutral hue.
Linings
TAFFETA
Our taffeta linings are a crisp, smooth woven fabric made from an acetate polyester mix. There are two distinct types of taffeta: yarn-dyed and piece-dyed. Piece-dyed taffeta is often used in linings and is soft to the touch.
Please note: linen fabrics are not suitable for gathered pleat shades and taffeta linings are exclusive to our pleated shade range.
