Mucking about Arkport By Kathryn Ross

RKPORT — Part of Hornellsville, Arkport owes its name to Christopher Hurlbut who first explored the Genesee River Valley in 1795 after serving with the Continental Army and crossing the Delaware River on Christmas Eve with General Washington. “He explored the area from the Genesee Valley to Lake Ontario and was quite taken with this area because of its beauty and its expanse of thick white pine forests,” wrote Doris Jones, Hurlbut’s Great-Great-Great Granddaughter for the Steuben County Historical Society Tour of Cemeteries in 2012. After he left the Army, in 1777 Hurlbut’s family departed Connecticut to settle in the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania where he lived and started a family for 15 years. But after seeing the Genesee Valley in 1796 he purchased 638 acres and settled there clearing land and building a log house. A year later he moved his family to the site. Jones said, they came, “Because of the resources and beauty of this valley. Getting products to the eastern states was possible because of the river system. Christopher saw that they could float goods down the fast moving Canisteo River to the Chemung River to the Susquehanna River and then to the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay,” by building arks from lumber harvested from the thick pine forest. “In the spring of 1800 when the water level was high, the first ark went down the Canisteo River carrying wheat, lumber and potash. The potash was sent to Baltimore and then to England for use in manufacturing woolen cloth. “In 1802, 11 arks were built and sailed. By this time, other farmers from the area would bring their goods to be sailed down the river. Christopher built a large storehouse to house all the goods that were to be shipped,” she said. Originally the land office in Bath wanted to call the village Port Hurlbut but

Hurlbut felt the village’s name of should reflect its chief industry, the building and sailing of arks according to Jones. In 1806, a post office was officially established in Arkport. At that time there was no other town called Arkport. By 1830, the arking business came to an end due to the Erie Canal, but for a while, Arkport was one of the most active towns in the region as a shipping port. By the 1850s and 1860s the land around Arkport had been cleared and farming was the main means of making a living. The chief crops were potatoes, wheat, oats and wool. When the cream separator was invented in the 1890’s Arkport like other areas built its own creamery. In “From Arks to Celery” published by the Canisteo Valley Historical Society, “Around 1900 several residents began talking about building some type of milk plant. At first a cheese factory was favored but finally it was decided a creamery would be more feasible. A small wooden building was built on Hurlbut Street near the railroad. In 1911 the building was sold. Today Crowley Foods Inc. is a major employer in Arkport. In the “The “History of Steuben County” it states, “The draining of the marsh, later known as the muck, had a major effect on the economy and growth of Arkport. Approximately 3,000 acres of land between Burns and Arkport had little value for farming because it was under water for much of the year. About 1880 the State made the first effort to drain the swampy land. About 1897 S. Sambroke purchased land in Burns to grow celery and between 1898 and 1912 celery became the most profitable crop in Arkport. “This discovery,” according to the history book, “was the impetus which led to the final drainage and clearing of the entire swamp. Small ditches were built and enlarged the embankments in the big ditch were raised until 1923 when the channel for

the ditch draining the land was enlarged leaving behind the dark muck land. Due to the times, the cost of refrigeration, and the abundance of the vegetable crop, in 1899 the Arkport Canning and Preserving Factory was built. Along with vegetables production Arkport has other claims to fame. Eunice Young modestly described her life for “A History of Steuben County “ and in it she notes, “I spent my childhood and high school years in Arkport, New York. Since it was during the Depression years, money for college education was not available and I decided to go into nurse’s training. I graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz. and spent two years as a civilian nurse before learning about the Army Nurses Corps. ...here was a chance to travel, so I applied, was accepted and given a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Nurses Corps on Oct. 1, 1939 at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, Calif. After two years of duty there, I was permitted to volunteer for overseas service. In July 1941, I was sent to the Philippine Islands. War broke in Dec. 1941 and I was taken prisoner on May 6, 1942 by the Japanese. After my liberation in Feb. 1945, I returned to the United States.” Young, who is in the Steuben County Hall of Fame, left out that she was interred at the San Tomas Concentration Camp in Manila for nearly three years. And in “The History of U.S. Army Nurse Corps” it reports, “even though the nurses were plagued by sickness they still cared for the other 4,000 interred with them.” Young served as an Army nurse until 1949 then transferred to the Air Force Nurse Corps. She also served in Korea. She retired in 1961 as a Lieutenant Colonel and passed away in 2005.
