The Balvenie Commission Craft in Action with Daniel Marshall—Humidor and Cigar creator by The Balvenie
“As with any object of beauty, one immediately knows and feels the love and human life that has gone in to its creation”
Daniel Marshall is renowned for his exclusive cigar humidors and exquisite and delicious cigars. His many clients have included presidents, Hollywood stars and even the British royal family. One of the cigar industry’s most iconic figures, Marshall has been handcrafting luxury humidors and cigars for select international clientele from his workshop in Tustin, California since 1982. Cigar Aficionado Magazine have named Marshall their No. 1 rated humidor specialist. He has created thousands of extraordinary humidors throughout his illustrious 32-year career, using materials including solid gold, exotic wood and even alligator skin in their creations.

As Daniel Marshall reclines with whisky and cigar in hand, from a distance it might be easy to misjudge this bronzed Californian surfer as someone who likes to take it easy. But within moments of meeting him, you soon realize that this is a man with extraordinary drive and passion. His obsession stems not for the want of fame, money or celebrity, but for the continuation of quality craftsmanship and the aspect of human nature in creation.
1/15/19 7:48 PM
Commitment to Craftsmanship
Marshall is committed to creating beautiful luxury items entirely by hand. This trade was made possible by a generous cash injection from a grandfather of an ex-girlfriend, who was fascinated by this young artisan’s original dream of building his own sailing boat. To thank him for his generosity and faith, the 19-year-old Marshall built ‘Papa Joe’ a unique three-cigar hinged case made from teak. Papa Joe was seriously impressed with his handmade gift, encouraging Marshall to take it to Dunhill of London in Beverley Hills, the older man’s favorite shop. Humidor in hand, Marshall met with Dunhill and quickly became the official architect of Dunhill humidors, and his lifelong career took off. Each one of his luxury humidors takes almost four months to create and Marshall continues to takes great pride in the painstaking process that is required for each. Marshall rejects using any machinery or technology to speed up production, and reduce costs, “There are fancy computer controlled routers and tooling that would remove many of our artist’s work, yes of course, but we choose to continue in the same way as we have for 32 years. A machinemade product has no soul. Hand-made quality cannot be replaced by machines.”
Despite having a team of exceptional artists working with him, each with up to 25 years of experience, Marshall still remains a fundamental part of the creation and design of the humidors in the Daniel Marshall collection. He personally creates the first artist proof of each and every humidor and helps in the selection process of the most exotic and rarest woods for the boxes.
“When you open the humidor you immediately are transported to the maturation warehouses at The Balvenie Distillery in Scotland where some barrels of whisky have been aging for over 50 years.” “Human intent, care, love and life are breathed in to every one of our humidors. It’s not only visible, but a vibration that can be felt. As with any object of beauty, one immediately knows and feels the love and human life that has gone in to its creation,” explains Marshall, when asked what makes a handmade bespoke humidor so special. “Whenever we create as artists, that energy we expend to create the best of the best and to use the finest of the finest materials on earth, that energy is tangible and evident in each of our creations.”

Wood and Whisky
It is working with wood where Marshall’s true passion lies. His enjoyment comes from taking a creation from his mind and using a natural material to realize it. He appreciates how wood smells of its past—the age of the tree and the soil in which it grew. “I get quiet, peaceful and thoughtful, time slows down the minute I take up the chisel and work to create in three-dimensional form what is in my mind’s eye. This is what inspires me daily and give me great pleasure.” When The Balvenie Scotch whisky approached Marshall to create a humidor from the old oak staves from casks that have matured The Balvenie Portwood 21 Year Old single malt, he was immediately inspired.
aroma that this process creates is sublime,” says Marshall. “When you open the humidor you immediately are transported to the maturation warehouses at The Balvenie Distillery in Scotland where some barrels of whisky have been aging for over 50 years.” Twenty-five of these beautiful Balvenie humidors have been made by Marshall and his team. Each humidor has been given a precise finish, rich in color and texture. Small details such as the 24 carat gold fastenings add an extra finesse to the box, which holds 125 cigars. Perfect humidity is maintained inside the humidors, replicating the climate of the great regions that grow tobacco—allowing perfect aging for the finest of cigars.
“Whisky and cigars are the ideal digestive pairing for a discerning gentleman, so it makes sense to combine the two for such a fine object. The Balvenie Portwood casks have a real character to them, which is not just evident in the flavor carried in the whisky, but the grain and appearance of the wood itself. You can see where the iron rings holding the casks together have left their mark on the humidor’s staves. It is a truly great material to work with.”
The combination of the craftwork with the wood in the cooperage and the delicious aromas of the warehouse gave Marshall the inspiration he needed to create his unique and beautiful creation—The 1962 Balvenie Whisky Stave Humidor. The original whisky staves in which The Balvenie Portwood 21 Year Old matured are carefully fitted to the exterior of this unique humidor and the interior of the humidor is the actual interior wood from the same whisky cask, giving the humidor a uniquely delicate and earthy scent. “The

The Hands of Time
Marshall strongly believes the hands of time cannot be rushed in order to achieve what is defined as the best. Poor quality craftsmanship is usually the result of a rushed job and evident to all. When asked what craftsmanship means to him, Daniel Marshall replies, “Craftsmanship means to me an infusion of the human spirit into the object created. The traditional handmade technique and culture of quality craftsmanship must be preserved, celebrated and appreciated, if it is not, we will lose a very important part of what makes us human.”

Marshall made the trip across the Atlantic to visit The Balvenie Distillery in Dufftown, Scotland in order to inspire his creation. He paid a visit to fellow craftsmen who work at the distillery, including the coopers in The Balvenie’s on-site cooperage. It was here he watched the coopers handcraft the casks with wood in which the whisky would eventually rest. He also visited the warehouses where the whisky is aged in the casks, taking in the unique and rich aromas of the evaporating spirit.

DM Meets Sir Winston Churchill,s Granddaughter A Memorable Night featuring Daniel Marshall, Davidoff, Glenfiddich and Celia Sandys Photos by Sir Colin Hampden-White
IT WAS A NIGHT NOT LONG AGO —an exquisite and memorable evening
in London as Daniel Marshall collaborated with other family owned businesses to commemorate Sir Winston Churchill’s birthday. Celia Sandys, granddaughter of Sir Winston Churchill, was in attendance and provided a stunning tribute to her famous grandfather in a private dining room at the Jumeriah Carlton Tower in Belgravia. Sandys, a notable expert on the life and history of her grandfather, shared intimate stories of his life, travels, philosophy and challenges faced by the luminous legend and leader. She highlighted what Sir Winston was doing and where on each significant birthday from his birth to his death at 90 years old. Those in attendance were spellbound with her interesting stories relating to his life-long love for whisky and cigars. Some of the world’s finest Glenfiddich Single Malts and savored his Namesake Cigar. She told those gathered, “When I was a little girl, I would ask my grandfather for the cigar bands from the cigars he

was enjoying to use as rings that I proudly wore on my fingers”. “My grandfather never went out without his cigar, even when flying with the Royal Air Force where he modified his mask to allow for his cigar.” “Every Birthday and Christmas, my mother and I would go to the cigar merchant and buy my Grandfather a cigar as his gift. His 90th Birthday was no exception; we gave him his cigar which he enjoyed with his whisky and champagne.”

“When my Grandfather escaped from prison in South Africa, he made sure he had the bottle of whisky next to him, as he was smuggled out of prison in a wheelbarrow. The whisky very likely was one of your brands, as she spoke to Kirsten Grant, the Great-Great Granddaughter of Glenfiddich’s founder, which was smuggled into his prison cell in a basket of fruit”. Sandys continued, “When I came of age to taste cigars, I enjoyed the smaller size cigars. Those in attendance heard a first-hand story about a famous Churchill portrait. Sandys asked the group, “Do you know how the photographer Yousuf Karsh was able to capture the famous portrait of my Grandfather that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery? As Karsh readied the equipment but, just before taking the picture, he placed an ashtray in front of Churchill, asking that the Prime Minister remove the cigar from his mouth. Churchill obstinately refused, and Karsh was perplexed; the smoke from the cigar would certainly obscure the image. He returned to the camera, ready to take the picture—but then with
DMQ_V1B.indd 11
lightning speed, Karsh leaned over the camera and plucked it from Churchill’s lips. ‘He looked so belligerent, he could have devoured me,’ Karsh would remember later, and it’s that renown Churchill belligerence and independence that is a hallmark in the famous photograph—a scowl over the pilfered cigar that came to represent, seemingly, a fierce glare as if confronting the enemy. This was the day that Sir Winston lost his cigar!” The special event hosted by Glenfiddich, Marshall and Davidoff
brought together three familyowned companies that share a common commitment to quality. The evening’s events included a fabulous collection of Glenfiddich Whisky’s, a Daniel Marshall special three-tier “Whisky Tasting Cigar designed to pair with 12, 18 and 21 Year Old Glenfiddich. Marshall partnered with 5th generation master blenders and cigar creators Manuel Quesada and Nestor Plasencia to develop the Whisky Tasting Cigar that features three different blends of tobacco and kinds of wrapper leaf. Following the Whisky Tasting Cigar the guests savored three vitolas from Davidoff ; the Davidoff Winston Churchill Petit Corona, Robusto, and Toro cigars.
Marshall commented, “I am confident Sir Winston would have greatly appreciated the “Cigars of Character” that Davidoff has created with his namesake Davidoff Winston Churchill Cigar Collection for the world to remember his leadership, courage and relentless passion for the best of the best.” The attendees were treated to delightful pairings of these cigars alongside 18, 21 and 30-year vintage Glenfiddich whisky. Davidoff’s participation holds a special personal meaning to Marshall. “Since 1911, Davidoff has the vision and commitment to carry the legend, passion and lifestyle of fine cigars to the highest level of quality,” said Marshall. “Davidoff represents the absolute best and embodies all of the reasons why we love cigars. Their stores, lounges, and fabulous team worldwide are stellar. I believe we share a common vision with an obsessive commitment to excellence and the extraordinary.” Marshall and William Grant & Sons, the owners of Glenfiddich have partnered on a host of other events and projects including the Daniel Marshall Whisky Stave Humidor created from the finishing port pipe casks of 21 Year Balvenie Portwood. In addition, the initial launch of the special three-part Daniel Marshall Whisky Tasting Cigar for Glenfiddich was celebrated with Glenfiddch earlier last year in London and Lebanon, Beirut.

‘When ears were deaf and tongues were mute You told of doom to come; When others fingered on the flute You thundered on the drum; When armies marched and cities burned and all you said came true, Those who have mocked your warnings turned almost too late to you; When doubt gave way to firm belief and through five cruel years, You gave us glory in our grief and laughter through our tears; When final honours are bestowed and last accounts are done, Then shall we know how much was owed by all the world to one.’
Guests in attendance included: Kirsten Grant, Great-Great Granddaughter of founder William Grant whose family owns and operates Glenfiddich and Balvenie Whisky brands as well as many of the worlds most awarded and loved premium spirits. Edward and Eddie Sahakian, Davidoff of London and the Sahakian Cigar Lounge at the Bulgari Hotel, London Mark Thomson, Glenfiddich UK Brand Ambassador Sambrooke Spurrier, Prestige Business Development Executive William Grant & Sons UK Ltd. MS. SANDYS completed her tribute to her famous grandfather in private dining room at the Jumeriah Carleton Tower, London that became so quiet as we hung on every word as she recited this special poem which was written by Sir Winston’s friend, Duff Cooper. The poem summed up how the British people, despite voting him out of office after the war, felt about him after the war, and many people in Europe and America that felt the same:

edition humidor hand crafted by Daniel Marshall, was pre-sold for 750,000 Euro (~$920,000 USD) at the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) Annual Gala. The Foundation had their third annual event at the Domaine Bertaud Belieu vineyard in St. Tropez, France, and featured a fabulous list of auction items including the Daniel Marshall Humidor and Cigars alongside historic celebrity memorabilia, extensive important contemporary art, and exotic travel experiences. The humidor was packed full of Governor Schwarzenegger Signature Daniel Marshall Red Label Churchill Nicaraguan Cigars. Also included were two Daniel Marshall 24 karat Red Label Golden Torpedo Cigars and Davidoff Special “R” Dominican Cigars. To complement this historic humidor Governor Schwarzenegger also offered his patriotic Lucchese leather boots, which were custom designed for his use, and a replica Terminator Endoskeleton skull. The humidor and cigars were highly coveted by a Russian billionaire who could not attend the event and placed the record-breaking bid. This “1 of 1” humidor, crafted in California, required four months to create, and was hand carved from solid American Alder harvested from a renewable forest. The design idea was Governor Schwarzenegger’s, as he wanted his humidor to evoke the look and feel of old wood beams and flooring reminiscent of his home in the mountains. The gold enameled Governor seal inlay on top of this masterpiece is unique. Unlike the consistency of the US Presidential Seal, the Governor’s seal changes with each Governor in office making the 38th Governor of California seal unique to Schwarzenegger. During Governor Schwarzenegger’s two terms as the 38th Governor of California, Daniel Marshall created a very small number of these
14
humidors, unique in size and design. Over the 20 years that Daniel Marshall has known Governor Schwarzenegger, Marshall has been inspired by the Governor and motivated to give back and create unique pieces for charity. Inclusion of the Davidoff Special “R” Cigars carries a special meaning to Marshall. “I asked my friends at Davidoff to be a part of this historic humidor lot that I felt would make history. Davidoff has the vision and commitment to carry the legend, passion and lifestyle of fine cigars to the highest level of quality,” said Marshall. “Davidoff represents the absolute best and embodies all of the reasons why we love cigars. Their stores, lounges, and fabulous team worldwide are stellar. I believe we share a common vision with an obsessive commitment to excellence and the extraordinary.” Marshall continued, “We are proud to partner with The DiCaprio Foundation and LDF Global Fundraising Chairman, Milutin Gatsby. Congratulations to Leonardo DiCaprio and his incredible partners and team for their vision and absolute commitment. It was our honor to be part of a wonderful evening that raised $45 million dollars for a vital cause, to protect our planet and implement renewable resources and energy to ensure health, safety and prosperity for our children and all future generations. One world, one people, one life.” Recognized as the United Nations Messenger of Peace, DiCaprio and his Foundation are dedicated to the long-term health and well-being of all Earth’s inhabitants. “We’ve decimated our forests, wildlands, polluted and over fished our rivers and oceans; all the key ecosystems that not only serve as a home to our planet’s biodiversity, but also make life here for us possible,” said DiCaprio. “I’m incredibly proud to be part of a night that will allow us to do so much to protect the planet.” For more information, visit www.leonardodicaprio.org

Daniel Marshall Celebrates 35th Anniversary with Commemorative, Limited Edition Humidor Marshall made in 1982. It was constructed of Macassar Ebony from Sri Lanka for men’s luxury goods company, Alfred Dunhill of London. It was recently discovered after Daniel thought it was lost for over 20 years, deep in the archives of his shop and covered with two decades worth of dust. The priceless humidor was stacked in a box with other humidors, stored with total disregard to the significance and value of the piece. Marshall said, “Blowing off two decades of dust and being reunited with this precious humidor, and to see the work I did 35 years ago, to build a humidor still functional and beautiful was one of the greatest feelings.”

“As this summer marked our 35th anniversary of creating affordable luxury, I thought, ‘What could be more appropriate than commemorating this milestone of a life making humidors with a re-creation of that first humidor I made 35 years ago that held a bottle of Dunhill Whisky,’” said Marshall. The anniversary collector’s piece is also made of the same Macassar Ebony wood as the original and holds 125 cigars. It houses a unique bottle of Glenfiddich 21-year Scotch whisky that is not available in the United States. Each bottle is hand signed in gold by Daniel Marshall and Kirsten Grant, the great-great granddaughter of Glenfiddich founder, William Grant. In addition, each humidor will be hand signed and dated by Daniel Marshall with its limited edition number engraved on a golden plate affixed inside the humidor. “It is extremely rare to be able to collect a bottle of Glenfiddich signed by a direct descendent of the founder, William Grant. Ms. Grant has signed 100 bottles and I am forever grateful,” expressed Marshall. “She organized her distillery to provide us with 100 bottles of 21-year Glenfiddich in a special bottle that is not available in the US.”

This year marks a significant milestone that leaves me humbled and grateful.” To complement the whisky, each humidor will be fitted with two Glenfiddich nosing glasses from Scotland and five, never sold before, DM Red Label Tasting cigars alongside 10 92-rated DM Red Label Churchill cigars. The 35th Anniversary Collector’s Edition humidor is limited to 100 pieces and retails for $1,995 USD. The Daniel Marshall brand has celebrated many legendary achievements over its nearly four-decade span with exciting victories such as last year’s record breaker. “Last year one of the DM humidors broke sales records at the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Gala fundraiser in St. Tropez, France,” Marshall revealed. “It topped the charts for highest amount paid for a modern day humidor that included New World Daniel Marshall cigars”
“I have loved our cigar world for most of my life. This year marks a significant milestone that leaves me humbled and grateful. I would like to thank every DM cigar connoisseur and humidor collector for making it possible for me to realize my dreams of going from boy to man, from a California surfer to a designer and manufacturer of fine cigars and luxury humidors for the most discriminating luxury goods houses and collectors in the world, achieving the No. 1 Rating for Humidors and being able to leverage our collections to raise funds for vital causes worldwide” said Marshall.

ARE YOU THE NEXT BOB BAFFERT? by Louise Haynes
Imagine being in the winner’s circle at Churchill Downs, your champion 3-year-old Thoroughbred standing beside you, a garland of roses draped around his neck. It’s a dream that many people have but few are able to realize. Yet owning a successful racehorse is not as impossible as it may seem.

While you may not make it to the Kentucky Derby, you can still enjoy the excitement of seeing your horse run for money if you take the plunge into racehorse ownership. Getting an idea of what’s involved in owning a horse built for speed is your first step.
Time and Money Before you embark on the adventure of owning a racehorse, step outside the fantasy and consider the reality. Owning a horse is a big responsibility, and racehorses in particular require a significant financial commitment.
“Given the variability of veterinary costs, it’s important for you to have a discussion with your trainer to learn the extent to which a vet is going to be used on a dayto-day basis.”
“Generally speaking, the level of investment is the primary consideration in determining the most appropriate means of becoming an owner,” says Dan Metzger, president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association in Lexington, Ky.
Time is another issue to consider when deciding if racehorse ownership is right for you. Because your racehorse is a big investment, you will want to allocate time to monitor his care and training. If you want to be very involved with your horse and his career, you will need to put aside time to talk to your trainer, visit the stable where your horse is kept, and attend races.
The first expenditure is purchase of the horse. Depending on the age, training and bloodlines of the horse, this can range anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. Ongoing expenses to maintain a racehorse are also a big consideration. Regular expenses include fees for training, veterinary care, stall fees, shipping, feed, race nominations, shoes, race day expenses and lay ups. A survey conducted in 2014 by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association revealed an annual average ownership cost of $40,423 per year. This cost will vary depending on your location. Racehorse ownership is most expensive in the Northeast and less expensive in the Midwest.

Most of the money spent on maintaining a racehorse is in trainer fees, which accounts for about half the annual expense. Next are veterinary fees, which can vary, depending on the trainer.

To reduce the amount of your initial investment and your ongoing expenses, you may want to consider owning a horse in partnership. You can buy shares of a horse from an existing partnership, or you can form your own partnership with friends or associates. You may also want to become part of a racing syndicate, which can own anywhere from one to several horses. If you like the idea of joining an existing partnership, you’re in luck; many partnerships are looking for new investors. When exploring an existing partnership, it’s important to investigate the partnership, particularly the individuals involved to make sure they are reputable. “It is important to select a partnership with goals and philosophies that match your own, and whose financial requirements are within your budget,” says Metzger.
“Veterinary fees can vary as much as your monthly trainer fees, and are dependent upon your trainer’s habits and the health of your horse,” says Metzger.

Your Trainer If you plan to own a horse on your own or with a partnership you are forming, you’ll need to find the right horse to buy. But before you go horse shopping, you need to assemble a team to get you started. “The success of one’s racing operation will depend, to a significant extent, on the makeup of the team,” says Metzger. “Exercise as much, if not more care in selecting a team of consultants as you would expect to exercise in the selection of your first horse.” Your “team” may end only being one person—your trainer. Or, you may want to also employ a bloodstock agent (an expert on evaluating horses based on pedigree and conformation), a pedigree advisor (a professional with a deep knowledge of horseracing pedigrees), a veterinarian (for pre-purchase health exams) and a mentor (usually an experienced racehorse owner). This team of professionals can help you purchase your first horse, and even assist you if you decide to get into breeding down the line. The most important person in any racehorse team is the trainer. The right trainer will not only help you choose the best horse, but will manage that horse’s health, training and racing career. “Selection of a trainer is quite possibly the most important decision you will make,” says Metzger. “Take your time and select the individual that fits your needs and personality. Be aware that as you interview the trainer, he or she may also be evaluating you as an owner-client, particularly your willingness and ability to accept advice.” You can start looking for a trainer at the track, where most racing offices will provide a stable list that includes trainers’ names, barns and contact information.
SELECTION OF A TRAINER IS QUITE POSSIBLY THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISION YOU WILL MAKE.”
If you plan to be very involved with your racehorse and his training, ask the trainer how he or she feels about spending time with you. Some trainers prefer absentee owners, while others are more willing to work with those who are active participants in the horse’s career. Be sure a prospective trainer is willing to help you locate the right horse. A good trainer has an eye for a talented horse and should be able to give you advice on a possible equine investment.

When interviewing a trainer, be sure to ask where the trainer’s horses are stabled. The track where the horses are kept will indicate whether the trainer specializes in allowance, claiming or stakes horses, as well as young racing stock, fillies or colts, and turf or dirt horses.

The Horse
If you plan to be a sole owner or start a partnership, you’ll be responsible for buying your own horse. Racehorses can be purchased at public auction, at claiming races or through private sale. Leasing is another possibility if you aren’t ready to actually purchase a horse.
If you elect to buy a horse through a private sale, you’ll have the chance to inspect the horse and have a veterinarian perform a pre-purchase exam to determine if the horse is healthy. Many private sale horses are advertised in racing publications and websites.
According to Metzger, auction sales offer the widest selection of horses, and often assure fair market values. For this reason, they are the option of choice for many buyers.
Leasing a racehorse is similar to leasing a car or a house. You pay a monthly or yearly fee to the owner of the horse, and also assume costs of the horse’s care, training fees, and other expenses. The greatest benefit of this arrangement is that you don’t have to layout a large sum of money up front for the purchase of the horse. This also enables you to get out of the game once the lease is over, should you decide racehorse ownership is not for you.
“To familiarize yourself with the sales process, attend several as an observer,” he says. “Consider it a dry run. This exercise should include selecting horses to inspect, evaluating them based upon their pedigree and conformation, and estimating their selling price. As you compare your figures to the actual sale price, a sense of the market will develop. In addition, through attending the sale, you will gain an understanding of the auction environment.” At a public racehorse auction, you will find prospects in the weanling to two-year-old age categories. The month that the sale is held will determine the age group you are likely to see. Claiming races are another option for finding a racehorse. Each horse entered in a claiming race is subject to sale, or claim, at the value stated in the conditions of the race. If you purchase a horse at a claiming race, you take possession of the horse immediately after the race. Unlike an auction or private sale, you won’t have the opportunity to have a veterinarian examine the horse. You’ll be very dependent on your trainer’s expertise and advice on whether or not to make the purchase.
38
If being part of the horse racing world sounds like your dream come true, start out by creating a business plan, according to Metzger. “The plan does not have to be complex or contain a complete sentence, but it should lay out your goals, objectives and projected costs,” he says. “A plan will be constantly updated as conditions change, so it will never be complete, but it will help you manage your equine investment.” Once you have your plan, your team and your horse, it will be time to sit back and enjoy the action.
