PEWTER WORKSHOP WITH TOM MADDEN

Any workshop with Tom Madden is time and money well spent. The most recent in November 2016, was all about Pewter: The Other White Metal. The magical teaching style of Tom Madden brought pewter to a new level of appreciation for all who attended the 2016 workshop. We were introduced the pliable, forgiving pewter to form our own vessels. The group learned to develop patterns, score, bend, weld, solder, and cast pewter. I believe we all came away with a new found interest in the Other White Metal. Yes, Tom, you must be living right. —Lori Brauer

EXAMPLES OF MADDEN MADNESS...

A DAY AT PENLAND By Ralph Paruszkiewicz Just after I caught the metals itch I started searching for somewhere to learn more about working with metal. Since this was ,- Internet for me, I was confined to doing my research at the library and bookstores. In one of the books I found,” Gift From the Hills” ,written by Lucy Morgan, I learned about Penland school of crafts. Lucy Morgan was the person who founded the school in 1929. She was also still working in the school supply store when I went there for my first jewelry workshop taught by Mary Ann Scherr in 1976.

That summer at Penland was a summer filled with firsts, It was the first time I had the pleasure of meeting many noted artists and craftsmen. It was the first time I was able to work at my craft day and night along with other craftsmen and artists. Living in a community that was filled with hundreds of like-minded people built a massive amount of creative energy. It was Energy that I absorbed and used to help me to create. That is the reason I became part of a community of artists today. I wanted to re-capture that part of my Penland experience. But I have to make my own meals. I can’t walk over to the Pines and stand in line to grab something good to eat. After Dinner there is always a game of volleyball in he court right outside the Pines. And after volleyball, a return to the studio, to practice what I was taught at class that day. Or maybe, go to a slide lecture from a visiting artist. When the lecture was over, I would spend the rest of the night either watching someone else working at their art or work on my own. I have many wonderful memories of Penland ; these are memories that have helped shape my life. My experience at Penland helped form the art backbone I have today. After that first Penland experience I was lucky to return for four more jewelry/metals workshops. Hopefully My Penland experience isn’t over yet.

(MSG member Betsy Lehndorff has been writing a new weekly blog for Interweave, publishers of Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist and other craft magazines. Recently she wrote about what happens tax wise when you donate your jewelry to fund raisers. To see her blog, go to http://www.interweave.com/ jewelry

Donating Your Jewelry for Fundraisers By Betsy Lehndorff H21: Handouts from the 21st Century is a collection of 60 handouts and teaching aids from 45 artists. Order H21 from SNAG for $56. Proceeds benefit SNAG and Haystack's J. Fred Woell Scholarship fund.

Metalwerx of Waltham, MA is having a fundraiser March 31 and asked me to donate a piece of my jewelry. I’ll be teaching pearl carving there in April, and agreed to send them a pendant that sells for $125. Metalwerx is a 501c(3) non-profit organization, so my contribution will be tax deductible. But only the cost of the materials is deductible. No mark up, no labor cost. This is what the law says. So, I do the math: One high quality halfdrilled freshwater pearl $5; one chain with spring ring clasp $8; a couple inches of sterling silver wire and a dab of casting shot $0.50. That’s a grand total of $13.50, which isn’t much. So, I add a $4.34 gift box; Sunshine polishing cloth for $1.25; packing material $0.50; shipping box $0.86; mailing label $0.10; packaging tape $0.10; postage $3.40; dental grade diamond ball bur $5.99, and business card. The bur is used in the class I teach – sort of a gift with purchase if a jeweler buys the piece. Now I have a donation worth $30. But my real cost is about $91.44. This includes the loss of $75 I would have made if I had sold the pearl at a gallery.

Victoria Patti talks to blacksmiths around the world on BlacksmithHER Radio. Shows are presented by podcast once a week.

Could this be an investment in advertising and promotion? Metalwerx will photograph the piece professionally and auction it off on eBay with help from the Paypal Giving Fund. I will post their auction on my blog and on Facebook. They will promote my class, and all of these efforts could attract buyers for both of us. Metalwerx has a great track record. Their first auction in 2014 raised $10,000, so I am happy to donate to something reliable.
