THERE IS NOTHING OLD UNDER THE SUN

You’re holding in your hands a piece of There is nothing old under the sun, a performance that took place in Helsinki’s Winter Garden on March 14th and 15th 2020. The first part consisted of a card-reading session similar to Tarot readings, for the exception that we created our deck based on twelve plants from this garden. We researched each of these plants, and we designed two card spreads we shared with the audience. We were hoping to spend time here, and this has been our way of observing, imagining, and learning something. And especially of playing and getting to know each other better.

Perhaps you’re one of the people who came to visit us: now it’s your turn to bring to life the second part of this proposal. In this zine, you will find pictures, drawings, suggestions and some facts to keep exploring the Winter Garden (or another one!) at your own pace. The first six plants are in the palm room and the other half in the cactus room. Everything in here is yours: do as you please!

LLEVABA UN SOL ADENTRO

Entre tus manos tienes un trocito de Llevaba un sol adentro, una performance que se llevó a cabo el 14 y 15 de marzo del 2020 en el Jardín de Invierno de Helsinki. La primera parte consistía en una lectura de cartas parecidas a las del Tarot, salvo que aquí la baraja la diseñamos nosotras a partir de doce plantas que encontramos en el jardín. Investigamos lo que pudimos sobre ellas, y así fuimos dando forma a dos tiradas que compartimos con el público. Nos apetecía mucho pasar tiempo aquí, y esta ha sido nuestra manera de mirar, imaginar y aprender un poquito. Y, sobre todo, de pasarlo bien y conocernos mejor.

Quizás seas una de las personas que vino a visitarnos: ahora te toca a ti darle vida a la segunda parte de la pieza.

En este fanzine encontrarás fotos, dibujos, sugerencias y alguno que otro dato para que sigas explorando el jardín (¡y cualquier otro!) a tu ritmo. Las primeras seis plantas se encuentran en la sala de las palmeras y la otra mitad en la de los cactus. A partir de aquí esto es tuyo, ¡haz con ello lo que te plazca!

MYRIOCARPA·STIPITATA

symbol of protection, balance, anonymity.

Find a Myriocarpa and go beneath it. Look up and around, as if in 360°. Notice how narrow the path is: perhaps you and Myriocarpa are almost touching. Feel the air between your bodies. Place your hand very close under one of its leaves; follow its veins. Myriocarpas like to grow near streams and, in some areas of Colombia, they’re used to reforest micro-basins. Although eye-catching, it isn’t easy to find information about this plant.

símbolo de cobijo, templanza, anonimato Encuentra una myriocarpa en el jardín y detente debajo de sus ramas. Mira hacia arriba y alrededor, como si pudieras girarte en 360º. El pasillo es estrecho, tú y Myriocarpa estáis casi rozándoos. Siente cómo se mueve el aire entre vosotras. Pon tu mano muy cerca de una de sus hojas y recorre sus venas. En algunas zonas de Colombia, esta planta es utilizada para reforestar microcuencas. Le gusta crecer a orillas de quebradas y, aunque imponente, es difícil encontrar información sobre ella.

JACARANDA·MIMOSIFOLIA symbol of beauty, longevity, uncertainty Sit under the Jacaranda tree and look up through its feather-like leaves. Blow towards them and watch them move. Now blow towards your hand: how does the touch of your breath feel? Does it reach very far? The name Jacaranda finds its roots in Guarani language, meaning fragrant, scented. The tree next to you is very young and will unlikely flower indoors, but if it does perhaps bees will visit, and when you’ll blow, its flowers will cover the garden in blue.

Ahora sopla hacia tu mano: ¿cómo se siente? ¿Qué tan lejos llega tu aliento? Jacarandá, del guaraní hakuã (que tiene perfume) y renda (lugar), significa fragante. El árbol que ves es muy jóven, y probablemente nunca llegue a florecer aquí dentro, pero si lo consigue quizás el jardín se llene de abejas, y al soplar sus flores cubrirán de azul todos sus rincones.

MAGNOLIA·GRANDIFLORA symbol of wisdom, fertility, letting go Go to the balcony, and stand up near the handrail. You will see Magnolia Grandiflora in front of you. Try to find the leaves that are going to fall; look for fruits and flowers.

Imagine you are on top of the tree, almost touching the glass ceiling, and enjoy the view. If you happen to be in Madrid and visit Retiro Park, you will see many magnolias by your side, although smaller than this one. Native to the south of the United States, Magnolia Grandiflora is a common street tree in many cities of the world due to its resistance and capacity to adapt to different climates.

símbolo de sabiduría, fertilidad, desprendimiento Dirígete al balcón y detente cerca de la barandilla. Verás a Magnolia Grandiflora en frente de ti. Adivina cuáles de sus hojas están a punto de caer, busca frutos y flores.

Ahora imagina que estás en la copa del árbol, casi tocando el techo de cristal. ¿Qué se percibe desde allí? Si alguna vez vas a Madrid y te paseas por el Retiro, te cruzarás con varias magnolias en tu camino, aunque más pequeñas que la de aquí. Oriundo del sur de Estados Unidos, este árbol ha conquistado las calles de muchas ciudades del mundo por su resistencia y fácil aclimatación.

NERIUM·OLEANDER

symbol of virtue, versatility, resistance Sit down on one of the wooden chairs on the balcony. Pay attention to the water, and use all your senses while you become aware of it. Observe how Nerium takes space.

Look through and beneath its leaves. How would you like to take space here and now? Nerium grows by the Mediterranean Sea and is named after Nereus, one of the water deities in Greek mythology. More clues await you amongst the pages of the Iliad.

símbolo de virtud, versatilidad, resistencia Siéntate en una de las sillas de madera que están en el balcón. Presta atención al agua; despierta todos tus sentidos mientras te vuelves consciente de su presencia.

Gírate hacia Nerium y observa cómo se abre y toma espacio. Mira las capas que aparecen entre sus hojas, mira también debajo de ellas. ¿Cómo te gustaría estar aquí y ahora? Nerium crece a orillas del Mediterráneo y se llama así por Nereo, el dios de las olas del mar en la mitología griega. Podrás hallar más pistas recorriendo la Ilíada.

MOMORDICA·CHARANTIA

symbol of new beginnings, ambition, interdependency Momordica is climbing on a column near the fountain.

Follow it as it leaves its pot. Not long ago, this vine was thriving towards the light, but water drops coming from the ceiling forced it to retreat. Most of its leaves and tendrils disappeared, but if you look closely, you will see how it’s recovering. Charantia’s fruit is bitter and edible.

It is used in traditional medicine to treat diabetes, and you may have already tried it without noticing!

símbolo de nuevos comienzos, ambición, interdependencia Momordica se alza sobre una columna cerca de la fuente.

Síguela de cerca mientras sale de la maceta y trepa hacia el techo. Hace no mucho, esta planta se erguía sobre su vecina y toda la columna, pero un ejército de goteras la hizo retroceder; sus hojas y zarcillos desaparecieron casi por completo. Si te fijas bien, verás cómo poco a poco vuelve a renacer. El fruto de Momordica Charantia es amargo y comestible, se usa para combatir la diabetes y puede que ya lo hayas probado sin saberlo.

STRELITZIA·NICOLAI

symbol of exuberance, opulence, tenacity Sit in front of Strelitzia, and look to the top of the plant.

Elongate your throat and stretch your neck backwards.

Bring your attention to your throat, breathe through your mouth, and let your throat relax. Named after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia (1831-1891), this plant is known after its flowers as the White Bird of Paradise.

Presta atención a tu garganta y respira por la boca. Deja que tu garganta se relaje y sigue respirando. Aunque lleve el nombre de Carlota de Mecklemburgo-Strelitz (17441818), reina de Gran Bretaña, y del gran duque Nicolás Nikoláyevich de Rusia (1831-1891), Strelitzia Nicolai es conocida por sus flores como Ave del Paraíso Blanca.

AGAVE·AMERICANA

symbol of patience, nobility, generosity In the room, find the Agave of your choice. Sit next to it.

Are its leaves surrounding you? Follow their movement with your gaze. Notice the different levels, and feel the passing of time on each leaf. Although famous for its syrup, or drinks like pulque and mezcal, Agave is also a plant with many properties. All its parts can be harvested for different purposes and dried for later use.

símbolo de paciencia, nobleza, generosidad En la sala encuentra un agave de tu interés. Siéntate junto a él. ¿Te está envolviendo? Sigue con la mirada el movimiento de sus hojas. Fíjate en los diferentes niveles y siente el paso del tiempo en cada una de ellas. Además de brindarnos su miel, o bebidas como el pulque y el mezcal, el Agave es una planta con muchas propiedades. No tiene desperdicio: todas sus partes pueden ser cosechadas y almacenadas para distintos usos.

SENECIO·HAWORTHII

symbol of elegance, curiosity, self-confidence Senecio is endemic to South Africa, where it grows on rocky slopes near mountains. The harsh conditions of its natural habitat lead the plant to stay small and compact, but here the case is different. Follow Senecio. Imagine where its stem emerges from the soil, and trace it until the tip of one of Senecio’s woolly leaves. Now get closer to the plant. Acknowledge its beauty. Observe how it responds to its environment.

símbolo de elegancia, curiosidad, desenvoltura Nativa de Sudáfrica, esta planta crece en laderas rocosas y zonas montañosas. Las duras condiciones de su hábitat natural le incitan a crecer poco y de manera compacta, pero en este jardín la historia es otra. Sigue a Senecio.

Imagina de dónde emerge su tallo y persíguelo hasta dar con alguna de sus hojas. Acércate un poco más. Reconoce su belleza y observa cómo se adapta a su entorno.

MAMMILLARIA·SPINOSISSIMA

symbol of pleasure, community, abundance Stand or sit next to a mammillaria. Count its spikes. When tired, blow towards the plant and notice if anything moves.

Try this a couple of times. These spikes are modified leaves; they help cactuses defend themselves against herbivores, but also against the wind and water loss. There are eleven mammillarias in this garden, and we recently planted a new one: will it show up soon?

símbolo de placer, comunidad, abundancia Siéntate o ponte de pie al lado de una mammillaria. Cuenta sus espinas. Cuando te canses, sopla hacia la planta y mira si algo se mueve. Inténtalo un par de veces más.

Estas espinas son en realidad una adaptación, hojas que han mutado con el tiempo. Ayudan a los cactus a repeler herbívoros, a protegerse del viento y a retener agua. Hay once mammillarias en este jardín. Hace poco plantamos una más, ¿estará a punto de asomar?

BOUGAINVILLEA

symbol of daydream, recognition, independence Look at Bougainvillea. Imagine where its branches will climb, and where its flowers will pop up. How far would you like it to reach? This plant shares its name with an island in the Solomon Sea. Their bond originates in the 18th century, during Louis Antoine de Bougainville’s expedition and circumnavigation of the globe for the French crown. The plant and the island existed before Bougainville, and he is survived by the two.

símbolo de ensoñación, reconocimiento, independencia Mira a Bougainvillea. Adivina por dónde treparán sus ramas, y dónde brotarán sus flores. ¿Hasta dónde te gustaría que llegase? Esta planta tiene por tocaya una isla en el mar de Salomón. Su historia en común remonta al siglo XVIII, durante la expedición y circunnavegación del globo por parte de Louis Antoine de Bougainville para la corona francesa. Tanto la isla como la planta existían antes de Bougainville y ambas le sobreviven.

CEREUS·MONSTROSUS

symbol of mixture, light, growth Its irregular pattern has earned Cereus to be perceived as a monster, but also as a living sculpture on high demand.

Get closer to one of them. Look at it from the bottom upwards, and back to the bottom. How is this plant changing position? Focus on its stem; it is there where all photosynthesis occurs. Try to find a straight line. If the light allows it, enjoy the glow of Cereus spikes.

símbolo de mixtura, luz, crecimiento Su textura irregular le ha ganado el adjetivo de monstruoso, aunque también es una escultura viva muy codiciada por coleccionistas. Acércate a un cereus. Míralo de abajo a arriba y de arriba a abajo. ¿Cómo cambia de postura? Fíjate en su tronco; es allí dónde se realiza toda la fotosíntesis. Intenta encontrar una línea recta. Si la luz lo permite, disfruta del resplandor de sus espinas.

ECHIUM·WILDPRETII

symbol of perseverance, collaboration, surrender When in front of Echium, feel your palate with your tongue. Allow your tongue to wander inside your mouth.

When you feel it’s enough, open your mouth and taste the air. What’s the atmosphere like? This plant enjoys the winds of Cañadas del Teide, in Tenerife, where it grows and flowers like a tower of jewels, only to die shortly after. Its skeleton dries up and blends in the aridity of the landscape.

símbolo de perseverancia, colaboración, entrega Cuando estés enfrente de Echium, lleva tu lengua al paladar y deja que se pasee por tu boca. Cuando sientas que es suficiente, abre la boca y prueba el aire. ¿Qué tal se está aquí afuera? A esta planta le gustan los vientos de las Cañadas del Teide, en Tenerife, donde crece como un cucurucho y muere poco después de florecer. Es entonces cuando su esqueleto se seca y pervive camuflado en el paisaje.
