Daniel Neufeld Navarro (Guadalajara, Mex. 1973) is a self-taught artist who graduated in Comunications from ITESO, in Guadalajara, Mexico. Initially influenced by abstract painting and expressionism, the themes that have been most central to his creative process in recent years are improvisation, chance, randomness, and even accidents. Neufeld’s constantly changing surfaces and mediums- another ever-present quality in his work- are all part and parcel of a unifying strategy: no matter which medium or materials he employs (paper or canvas, collage, photographs, found and recycled objects), the works are always playful. New ideas and shapes spring from random coincidences, a characteristic that lends itself to the idea that, as Neufeld puts it, “It’s not easy to define my work because I’m always changing my style, technique and subject matter, I’m mainly improvising; I can be working with colors in the style of pop art or psychedelic work, or exploring abstract compositions, or making characters in expressionist style”. Neufeld’s artistic voice originally found a home in the streets of Guadalajara, where he was influenced by and actively participated in muralism and graffiti. He eventually published a book of the graffiti of Guadalajara. He slowly migrated to collage, and in the past several years has focused largely on printmaking, a medium that gives him the flexibility and spontaneity that is evident in his other work. Neufeld is a self taught artist, who is, in his own words, “always learning new ways of expression, and I think that what I would like to communicate mainly with my work is the pleasure of creation itself.”
