ACHROMATIC ART Dani Collenette

INVESTIGATION I aimed to investigate one of the most debated Issues about colour;

“Are Black and White colours?

It interests me the array of different answers you will receive, and how they all seem to have their own valid reasoning. I aim to portray colour, or the lack of it, in a variety of different ways, experimenting with different concepts and medias. I will also reflect on which experiments are successful and which are not.

LINO PRINTS

RORSCHACH

DEVELOPMENT For me, so far, I felt that lino printing carried the strongest aesthetic, but I really

liked the idea that colour can ‘kill’ an image, and taking this metaphor and portraying it literally, where the colour is the part of the image that is killing it - and so I decided to combine the two.

Research I want to research a little further into the physics of colour theory, How the colours are either absorbed or reflected - the way we see them. What actually makes us see black and white? Is what I see as blue, what you see as blue? Studying Hue, warm and cold greys. Rorschach Tests. Colour Blindness.

The artist who has inspired me the most during this project is Gerhard Richter. His exhibition - and work in general, is truly amazing. Hie does not stick to one way of working, and his experimental practicion is one of the reasons I appreciate his work so much. He includes abstract paintings, using wide ranges of colours, installations, oil paintings that are so life like they could be photographs, and also achromatic art, using different shades of grey and also just black and white. I also love his use of the “blur.

FMP There are still more areas I’d like to experiment with before I propose the subject for my final major project. For instance, this coming week I will be looking at black and white photography in relation to colour photography, I will experiment as widely as possible, using the darkroom, home made pinhole cameras and also experimenting with not only what I photograph but the way in which I do - what camera or film I use, and what I expose or print the image onto. The concept that I think is the strongest from my work so far is “Colour Kills” and so I can see this being the backbone for my FMP and is currently the subject I am most focused on.
