35mm Digital Lomography Snapshots Edited External

INTRODUCTION

This is a portfolio of my Photography. I have a passion for Photography, which is fuelled not only by my course here at UCA Epsom but also by my job at a small photographers in Surrey. I have divided my photographs into the following six sections, 35mm, Digital, Lomography, Snapshots, Edited and External as I think these are the main areas in which I base my work.

35mm

These photographs are all shot using 35mm film. I normally choose the film Kodak Colour Plus, 200 ISO, as it gives a warm hue and a slight grain.

DIGITAL

These photographs are all shot using my Cannon EOS 400D.

These are some photographs I took of and for my younger brother, Tommy.

LOMOGRAPHY

All of these photographs are taken with my Holga Lomography camera, It has coloured flash filters and a double exposure switch, none of the photographs have been edited. Again I have used the Kodak Colour Plus, Iso 200 film.

SNAPSHOTS

In the past I have more or less discarded Photographs taken with my compact camera, as I saw them more of a record of a day, not an art form. I felt that as I could not manually adjust the settings most of the work was done for me. Although my compact camera does offer a few manual options such as altering the white balance, exposure, flash on/off and macro on/off- I still take a lot more pride in my 35mm and digital SLR photographs. However, I have included some Photography under the title of “snapshots” as that is what they are. I always carry my compact camera with me, so not to miss a photographic opportunity. After seeing an exhibition called “Snapshots” at the Van Gogh museum, I realised what a waste it was not to give these photographs any credit whatsoever just because of the device they were taken with - as their general composition and format can still be

credited

to

the

photographer.

EDITED

This group of photographs I have edited in some way after I shot them. In this section I mainly focus on portrait photography. The main editing being the surrounds as I wanted a studio feel, although the images where shot within my house. Later on in this section I have experimented with changing the hue, saturation and also layering colours to create a dream like, surreal, effect.

EXTERNAL

These photographs I have been asked to take extenally, I have only touched upon it here within my Photography Portfolio and will expand a lt further within my External Posistioning. I was asked to take photographs at Keston Prinary School’s Fete and also a Keston Primary School’s Year 6 leavers party. The photograhs were used by the school and also uploaded to Flickr for the parents to download. I was also asked to photograph my friends band “Night Never Dies” at a small gig they did in Croydon.

FMP

As I have such a passion for photography, it is a medium I will work with very closely for my Final Major Project. The area of photography I enjoy the most is manual film photography, as not only I feel I have contributed so much more the end result, and so can take much more pride in my photograph, but I also think it is the most ascetically pleasing. The grain and mystic colours 35mm film presents to the photograph , provides a really rustic quality, and is not really something you can digitally manipulate. I also love the unpredictablitly and suspense of waiting for a roll of film to be developed. I have experimented with both black and white and colour photography, but within my other, art work I have looked at the way colour can kill an image, I am not going to pursue this in such a bold and dramatic way for my FMP, however I will continue to look at the effect colour has on a photograph and whether it adds or detracts from the photographs overall ascetic. I want to start my FMP by not only photographing in both black and white and colour, but also photographing objects and animals that are a clear indication of black and white, or colour, for instance I could photograph a bunch of flowers, because it is rich in colour, and then look at how de-saturating the image effects it’s overall appearance, or similarly I may Photograph a chess board, a trade mark of black and white checks, and add colour to the image.
