Juror’s statements

“It was a pleasure to review artworks by hundreds of New England-based artists, both new and familiar to me, as part of the Danforth Annual Juried Exhibition. What stuck with me after the review were the ways in which our collective experience of the pandemic seeped into the entries in subtle ways – a certain focus on domestic environments and objects, an abundance of familiar settings, and a desire for comfort for both artist and viewer. In some ways, I hope this is the positive lesson we can carry with us after three tumultuous years – a reminder of, and focus on, what is truly important in each of our lives.

Kudos to the artists – those who entered, and those selected by the panel. Your art enriches us all.”

“ It is always an exciting time at the Danforth when the Juried Exhibition process begins. Having the opportunity to look through such amazing contemporary artworks really highlights the caliber of New England artists. The diversity of medias and themes that have been selected for this year’s exhibition promises a wonderful and inspiring exhibition. With more artists and artworks than last year, it made it a hard yet rewarding process for the jurors. I want to thank all the artists who applied and congratulate the artists who were selected.”

It was a great honor to serve as Framingham State University’s representative on the panel of jurors. I was delighted to have the opportunity to review an array of pieces by New England artists working in a wide variety of mediums, incorporating unusual materials, and employing traditional and experimental processes. In the exhibition, color, patterning, and abstraction reoccur throughout, balanced by works-on-paper rendered in rich tones of black and white. Sculptures molded in clay, carved in wood, cast in metal, and built from recycled objects address themes of human existence. My sincere compliments to the hundreds of artists who had the courage to submit their work; it made our job as jurors especially challenging. Congratulations to all the artists whose creativity will be on exhibition throughout the summer. ”
